Oooh this is interesting!! I will add ideas!! So, the rinnegan thing is interesting cause I don't remember anything about how rinnegan works which allows me to... *drum roll*... Make shit up!! OK so, maybe Cross' and Lavi's rinnegans are like... Two eyes of the same pair? Like... Someone with rinnegan in the Uzumaki clan died and the clan kept the eyes. They gave one to Cross, cause he was part of like. The secret stealth force or something? Or the science department... I can see Cross creating new, dangerous and unusuals jutsus!! So maybe they gave one rinnegan to him cause they knew he would use it well and they gave the other to Lavi when he was a kid because he was... The closest relative of the one who had it before? Yeah. So now, there's a kind of connection? Like they can faintly sense each other (in the geographical sense) if they're apart and draw on each other's jutsu if they need? They also have a very faint telepathic link but they haven't figured any of that because 1) they can sense each other but think it's just a Uzumaki thing, this clan has a Thing™ for bonds, so they think that they're just sensing another Uzumaki family member and don't really care who it is. 2) they don't know they can lend each other Chakra because they just never needed, they have not been in enough danger to need it yet. And 3) they're almost never close enough to actually feel the very faint telepathic link, but when they are they just think they understand/read each other very well because they're similar type of people. Basically Lavi and Cross having a connection but not being aware of it in the slightest!! It's the good stuff. And also kinda self-indulgent, sorry if it's too long!!

Cross was probably Whirlpool's equivalent of Konoha's Sannin X)

Or at least well on his way to becoming that, before it was destroyed.

Cross being a type of shinobi who creates jutsus, and being good at it, makes me think he would be skilled enough to notice the connection. Lavi, though, I can see not noticing at all XD

Which would be interesting in and of itself, if Cross knew, and then didn't tell Lavi. I mentioned in the original post that I didn't know if Cross or Bookman would be the Jounin in charge of the Allen-Lena-Lavi team, but it would be hilarious if it were Cross, and he blatantly used that one-sided awareness of the connection to his advantage. Lavi could never get the drop on him during training, Ever XD

And no worries about it being too long, sometimes 'self-indulgent' is the most fun!
