"Arlington, Virginia is like a gateway to the city of Washington D.C. Part of the Metro line, but across the Potomac, it’s nevertheless a busy area and not the kind of place you’d expect to be able to get minutes-old, farm-fresh produce.
But Area 2 Farms is growing greens, herbs, and root vegetables in a vertical farm thanks to the dearth of traditional office tenants. With high-rise office space remaining vacant even after the end of the pandemic, landlords are open to ideas.
Jackie Potter and Tyler Baras pitched the idea of an indoor farm and it was obviously a good one because Area 2 is already well-established in the Arlington area such that they offer subscription delivery of fresh veggies to fellow urbanites starting at $40 per week.
Area 2 Farms uses a sophisticated conveyor belt system called Silo to cut down on the more laborious hours of indoor farming. It’s not a hydroponic system—there is soil inside Area 2 Farms which means they can grow root vegetables like potatoes, carrots, and radishes.
When executed correctly, vertical farming can produce as much as traditional farming but with a lot less space, and no concern over weather or pests. Obviously as well it can be done in the center of a city, where land is at a premium...
“Cities are changing every day,” Potter tells Modern Farmer. “There’s a really great economic opportunity as well. Our farms create new green jobs, they beautify spaces and provide fresh food to local communities. That’s something that’s really precious.”"

If you're like me and happen to like water drops on plants, I highly recommend taking a longer look at the fresh vegetable section on your next grocery run. :)
Photos are mine, unedited. The two near the bottom were taken with a phone camera in a different store. All the rest were taken with an Olympus handheld camera whose brightness I turned down. Sadly that camera broke in the cold a long time ago. Haven't have a phone camera that's ever worked as well. I have a digital SLR, but that's an expensive piece of equipment that was my college graduation present. I don't take that out unless I've planned for it.

This one's not in the grocery store; it's from the first time I helped make borscht with my grandmother. :)

Today was actually pretty busy, I started off by getting invited to the recording studio to watch my mom figure out some of her parts on my dad’s CD he has been working on, that was really interesting and a lot of fun to be involved in! I did have to wear my ear plugs for part of the time to avoid over stimulation and seizures.
Then I was able to go to the Thursday Farmers market here in town! I went a little wild with the fruit and vegetables! There will only be one more market before they stop for the winter season so I really wanted to enjoy everything I love so much about it and savor every taste and smell and all the beautiful natural colors! Not to forget the pastries I purchased from a couple of different vendors that I love so so much! What treats! After the market I got even another big treat and got myself a huge iced pumpkin chai latte to drink.
After coffee my mom came and picked me up and we went to my grandmas and talked and really enjoyed each other’s company, it feels really good to get time with my mother, especially right now when things feel so unpredictable and we still do not have all the pieces to the puzzle when it comes to her health.. waiting is so, so hard.
Nelly got to come along too and she had so much fun seeing everyone, including my grandma’s dog and all her very special exiting toys lol, once we got back home nel and I went for a short walk with my love.
I feel that today was very much a success and I’m thankful for that, I just hope that as the night goes on that I can keep the positive energy flowing

Today's harvest from our square foot garden - we had a pretty good rain this morning so it was time to pick everything before the tomatoes split. Gonna make marinara sauce tonight and freeze it!
Just froze five apple pie fillings and barely made a dent in the massive apple and pear harvest. More apples to come in the next 10 days!
I would say that square foot gardening has been a big success, even without using "Mel's Mix" raised bed soil. Chicken manure, greensand, agricultural lime, dried/ground banana peels and crushed eggshells works very well as an organic fertilizer. With just three raised beds in the parking hellstrip and a fourth where our useless front "lawn" had been, we ate very well this summer. We minimized damage from the July heat dome with old bedsheets (on the garden and the south/west facing windows.)
One other thing I could really recommend is using red mulch covering the soil under the tomatoes and peppers. Really reduced the effort while upping the yield.
(Not pictured: three adorable pumpkins!)

Garden update! Lots of growing since my last one.
Figs have been popping up on the tree, I now have some citrus that I’ve added to the bunch. The herbs are doing well, and my leafy greens have been doing so well in the box!

Succulents Part 9--Brassica oleracea
Succulents are a wide variety of plants, spanning multiple orders. Some have succulent leaves while others have succulent stems. Cactuses are succulents, but not all succulents are cactuses. Defining what exactly makes a succulent is a little tricky. For example, cabbage leaves are considered by some to be succulent, but tulip and onion leaves apparently aren't.
All photos mine. Unedited.

There is so much happening in the garden. There are strawberries!!! they seem early but look oh so tasty. The Passionfruit vine is laden with flowers and fruit and we have fruit on the Lime tree for the first time. So exciting. In the flower garden my Peonie Rose is putting on a beautiful show, this is the first time it has had multiple blooms.

Spent 14$ at the dollar store and got all these seeds. Idk who needs to hear this, but dollarstore seeds grow almost better than the more pricey brands.
