We are watching the far right rapidly becoming one of the strongest political parties in France - Marine Le Pen could become president or lose the election by a few % only, and her party will win the local elections in many regions, mine included. I just feel so helpless and angry. Now we find ourselves making a choice between the right wing and the far right; wherever I look there is racism, xenophobia, islamophobia, conservatism.
Why? Did we forget where we came from and what values shaped us?
On a personal level, if I can call it personal, this is utterly devastating. In France, in 1979, took place the legal arrival of the Boat people in our country. 130 000 refugees welcomed and helped by France, with the support of both left and right wings, and of the public opinion. 130 000 Cambodians, Vietnamese and Laotian people, many saved at sea. I have no idea how much horror immigrants go through, and yet, I know it better than many, as it is familial history. France's and Europe's behaviour regarding refugees is already reprehensible, but with the far-right in power here, I don't want to imagine what is going to happen. This is misery and death of fellow human beings you are voting for. On the subject of mass immigration, Le Pen made her opinion very clear. Here's the book she chose to exhibit during one of her interviews, and what it says:
One million boat people were arriving on our territory, the vanguard of an inevitable invasion. The government stalled and then gave in. But a handful of patriots resisted until the end, arms in hand... With the new legislation in force.
This book, published a few years before the crisis and acknowledged by many as deeply racist, depicts the destruction of Western civilization through Third World mass immigration to France. Racism and ostracism become conditions for survival. It is loved by American white supremacists.
And I must say, yes, the context then and the context now are different. But this is still human lives you are talking bout. Even regarding economic immigration. This isn't to say things haven't changed. This is to say being a refugee, having to flee your country for any reason, is still a human tragedy. Then, but also now.
Le RN opposes the 2018 Marrakesh Act, that recognized to all men the right to immigrate. They oppose the EU Pacte pour les migrations et l’Asile, seeing it as an organized plan for the invasion of Europe.
National priority, abolition of family reunification as well as the AME (State medical aid), prohibition of communitarianism, restriction of access to property for foreigners... It gives us a foretaste of what they will promote.
There are hundreds of reasons to oppose Le Rassemblement National, but today, I think about what many members of this party, what these people must still think of my family, of these 'invaders' and 'job-thieves' who are now teaching their children to read, to write, to speak English and master French.
All I know is they want to stop government aids for the associations helping migrants, the very same who, 42 years ago, saved and helped so many people fleeing dictatorship, war, poverty and genocide. Think of this. Fight for a better integration, not against people under fallacious pretexts.
