Scooby Family Swap Part 2: Pup Named Scooby Doo Version
Freddy Blake: Freddy dreams of adventure, far beyond the safe and pampered upbringing he has. He loves the National Exagerator’s stories of crazy monsters and insane places, and thinks it’s really cool that Daphne’s Uncle works there. Fred has a tendency to try and solve problems without spending money, just to prove he can, which has given him a knack for jury-rigging things using materials around him. At least part of this stems from his rivalry with Redd Herring, who constantly writes Fred off as a ‘rich brat who can’t do anything for himself’.
Though Fred is loathe to ask for help from those his family, his parent often have Jenkins follow him from a distance, just to ensure he doesn’t get into too much trouble.
Daphne Jones: (Note, to the best of my knowledge, Fred’s parents are never shown in series, just his Uncle. So I’m basing it off Skip and Peggy from the WNSD era) Daphne’s parents are a little embarrassing, but she love them. Daphne is the only member of the gang who doesn’t feel she has something to prove to her parents and the world at large, which has made her the group’s common sense, and they’ve learned to listen when she tells them to slow down and think things through a bit more thoroughly.  Velma Rogers: Not coming from a family where utter genius is expected, Velma is regarded as smart, but also very precocious, and not taken nearly as seriously as she’s like from her parents. Her baby sister, at least, thinks the world of her and Velma absolutely dotes on her in return. Velma has a burning need to prove her intelligence to those around her, that she’s not just a kid playing pretend.
If Scooby Stays with the Rogers, he’s very much Velma’s partner in Crime (solving) and helps her with her various scheme to prove herself. Shaggy Dinkley: Ironically where being raised by the DInkley family was a boost to his self esteem in MI, it’s the opposite in PNSD. Shaggy isn’t stupid, no matter how much he jokes he is, but having an average intelligence in a family of certified super geniuses is...it’s not great. (In fact if Shaggy ever does make those self depreciating jokes, there’s likely to be a lot more bitterness to them) His parents love him dearly and keep trying to find something he can excel at (not because they need him to, but because they hope it will help him see his own worth.) Like Velma, Shaggy has a very deep need to prove himself.
If Scooby stays with Shaggy he 100% is a therapy dog, as Shaggy’s issues with anxiety are even worse.

           Get to know the blogger!
Tumblr media
Can be used for RP and non-RP blogs to get to know a bit about the person behind the screen!
1. FIRST NAME: Josh
2. STRANGE FACT ABOUT YOURSELF: Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I’m one of the few people who enjoyed Phantom Menace? If only for the fight between Obi-Wan and Qui-Jon against Darth Maul. Iunno, what’s strange to one person might not be strange to another.
3. TOP THREE PHYSICAL THINGS YOU FIND ATTRACTIVE ON A PERSON: Boobs, butt, hips. ...What? I’m a guy, what do you expect from me?
4. A FOOD YOU COULD EAT FOREVER AND NOT GET BORED OF: Probably potatoes. Many, many ways to prepare them, my favourite being mashed.
5. A FOOD YOU HATE: Hmm. I’m not actually too picky, so this is kinda hard. I guess... peanuts? *shrug*
6. GUILTY PLEASURE: I mean, it feels kinda like it’d be cheating to say wearing my pajamas all day, since that’s what Amber put, so, uh... I dunno. My friends kinda got me out of calling stuff ‘guilty pleasures’ a while back, since if you enjoy something, you shouldn’t really feel guilty about it.
7. WHAT DO YOU SLEEP IN: Pajamas. Sometimes a t-shirt and boxer shorts if it’s hot.
8. SERIOUS RELATIONSHIPS OR FLINGS: Considering I’ve never really had any? Ehh, probably serious, but I guess I wouldn’t be opposed to flings.
9. IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN THE PAST AND CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE, WOULD YOU AND WHAT WOULD IT BE: Not dropping out of school when I was 12 due to bullying and depression would be a good start.
10. ARE YOU AN AFFECTIONATE PERSON: Don’t have many people to show my affection to, but yeah, if I know you well enough, you’re getting hugs whenever I see you.
11. A MOVIE YOU COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN: Hm. Probably the first Avengers film, Spider-Man Homecoming and Far From Home. Either of the Kingsmen movies, or Skyfall.
12. FAVOURITE BOOK: Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. I have many, many books. I guess my favourite ones would be the ‘Horrible Science’ books, since I learnt a lot from them. I’m a nerd like that.
13. YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO KEEP ANY ANIMAL AS A PET, WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE: I mean, I have cats. What other animal would I want?
14. TOP FIVE FICTIONAL SHIPS [IF YOU ARE AN RP BLOG, YOU CAN USE YOUR OWN SHIPS AS WELL]: I don’t actually go for ships all that often? Just... I dunno. A lot of ships are either canon, in which case they can be a bit boring to have as a fave ship... or are fan pairings, and I disagree with, like, 99% of them, whether I just don’t think the characters go well together (HermionexDraco, for example) or they’re just... really problematic (Harry/Snape, AxelxRoxas anyone?) so... eh. I’m just gonna... not pick any.
15. PIE OR CAKE: Neither. I do like pie, but my Dad buys them so often I’m kinda sick of them.
16. FAVORITE SCENT: Lavender.
17. CELEBRITY CRUSH: Don’t really have one. I guess maybe Christina Hendricks? *shrug*
18. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO: Canada, probably.
19. INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT: Mayor introvert. Going outside? no thanks.
20. DO YOU SCARE EASILY: I used to be really easy to scare, which led to me hating horror. Nowadays I’m less easy to scare... still hate horror though. Especially games like ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’. No, FNAF, jumpscares don’t make your game scary, it’s just a cheap substitute for actual horror.
21. IPHONE OR ANDROID: I’m pretty sure my phone predates both iPhone and Android. Well... maybe not, but it’s pretty damn basic.
22. DO YOU PLAY ANY VIDEO GAMES: Yep! Currently working my way through Octopath Traveller!
23. DREAM JOB: Voice actor.
24. WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH A MILLION DOLLARS: Probably use half of it for immediate stuff and to give to my family, and then invest the rest in something. Wouldn’t necessarily have to be anything that’d have a super high return, just something that’d be a safe bet.
25. FICTIONAL CHARACTER YOU HATE: Oooh boy, uuhhh... see, it’s tough, because most characters there is at least SOMETHING I like about them that stops me from flat-out hating them. I’m not very fond of Lexaeus, I guess, but we don’t really get much characterisation for him other than he’s strong and doesn’t talk that much. For characters I outright HATE though... none are really coming to mind. I mean, even the culprits in every Phoenix Wright case, they either don’t make enough of an impact for me to hate them, or they have some quirk that makes me like them. I guess Redd White, though his high and mighty attitude is fun to break.
26. FANDOM THAT YOU WERE ONCE A PART OF BUT AREN’T ANY LONGER: I don’t really tend to go for fandom stuff anymore, since they’re generally filled with drama and people arguing over ships, so... yeah.
tagged by: A bunch of nerds, but I guess specifically @twinfoxtails tagging: Do it if you want

I have a list of ~900 albums from 2019 that I still want to eventually listen to / review [IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT ALERT]
For this project (already 125+ releases deep), which is just impossibly daunting and makes me head hurt. IDK how to streamline this process or is any “critic” out there really listening to “all” the good music? It’s impossible I guess... BUT needless to say, these have made this list from an even larger pool of music that I either listened to briefly and immediately dismissed or (gasp!) never even came across my radar (radar = many many music blogs I follow via RSS).

COUCH TOUR: SORCERESS: ROBERTA PIKET with Jeong Lim Yang and Luciana Padmore, SMALL’S, 23 DECEMBER 2021, Set 1
Plus ALMOST COUCH TOUR: EHUD ASHERIE with Peter Washington and Kenny Washington, MEZZROW’S, 5 DECEMBER 2021, Set 1
Piano trios? Yes, please. I was thinking I’d put on Ehud Asherie’s second set to revel in his taste in tune selection, touch, but above all band mates which I listened to the night before when there was Roberta Piket’s set in real time.
Spoiled by Small’sLive, I haven’t felt pressed to see a set in real time. But I could and did. Piket is a spiky angular player, though by the back end of the set (a solo Round Midnight>Blue Monk medley, a bright standard, and another almost familiar ballad), I had touchpoints to understand her approach. No matter what it was a smart set of piano trio music.
She covered Chick Corea’s early Litha which I had on vinyl. Corea has always been clever, maybe too clever, and this tune has complicated puzzles and pleasant shifts in rhythm. That epitomized the early part of the set and my sense of her playing, skilled, deft, but maybe a little distant and arch. Her own early composition that followed had a moody minor introduction before finding a groove. Piket is married to the subtle drummer Billy Mintz and she opened with his Flight which, like the Corea, had intricacies and groove.
Luciana Padmore isn’t quite as subtle and Zennish as Mintz but she has lots of chops as listens inventively. Equally Jeong Lim Yang was both steady and prodding. She got lots of solo space and used it well. I’ll be back for the second set when it’s archived.
I will keep an eye on this band as I think it’s a band given that it has a name in the same spirit of female ferocity that Renee Rosnes celebrates with Artemis.
I already had that plan for EHUD ASHERIE because he too had a stellar rhythm section, indeed possibly the elite rhythm section. Peter Washington and Kenny Washington work with Bill Charlap and he would know. This had a bit of the feel of a kid being given the keys to the family luxury car. But it’s equally true that Asherie could hold his own with such players. I’ve seen Peter Washington more frequently via these streams, so the chances to see Kenny Washington was particularly welcome. They were individually and collectively brilliant—smart and subtle.
The set was bookended by bebop—Parker’s Mood and Dameronia. A nice blues groove to settle in and bright energy to close. Good as that was there was Ellington (Black Butterfly>Black Beauty) and, even better, Strayhorn (A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing)!! His original was a tribute to Freddie Redd and there was also the first Bossa, (Watercolors of) Brazil, and Sonny Rollins’s Valse Hot (which I noted as a refracted standard when I couldn’t place it).
Good old piano trios. To the Small’sArchive for second sets, a first set with Brian Charette earlier in the month after dropping in for part of the second set, and, tonight, some Kevin Hays.

Who To Watch In 2018
Tumblr media
Every few years music takes a turn. This past year with giants like Drake, Kanye, J. Cole, Adele, and Beyonce taking time off has, along with a a streaming boom and pop music being more top heavy than ever has allowed unknown and new artists to slide into our lives. 2018 will be a year of reemergence of sleeping giants in mainstream and underground hip-hop, while bubbling artists look to jump off after setting the ground work over the past 12 months.
Tumblr media
Mac Miller
From: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Genre: Hip-Hop, R&B
For the first time in a decade Mac Miller has hidden from the world and released no solo work. A well deserved break that has followed since the terrorist attack at girlfriend Ariana Grande’s concert earlier this year, and after a dive into R&B that showed yet another level in the Pittsburgh artist’s vision of himself. Mac has never done the same album twice, and rarely has even covered the same themes in more than a few songs since his evolution into a more serious rapper in his work post-”Blue Slide Park”. If it’s a new pure rap album, more R&B, a dip into acid jazz, or country music, Mac has the talent and creative prowess to create something worthwhile.
Tumblr media
Trippie Redd
From: Canton, Ohio
Genre: Hip-Hop
Hip-Hop music has become harder and harder to truly define in the past few years. With the term “mumble rap” being pushed onto any and every new artist from Soundcloud, whereas Punk Rap would fit better, every new artist is either swept under the rug or pushed into superstardom in days. None are like Trippie Redd though. His emotional moans and screams laced within well structured songs have caught the attention of major artists like Travi$ Scott, DRAM, and Drake, along with internet hits like those i'm his “Love Scars” song series and “In Too Deep”. Releasing two mixtapes, a myriad of videos and features with the previously mentioned DRAM and Travi$, whenever Trippie decides to put an official body of work forward, it is without a doubt he will be among the leaders of his generation's acts.

Cardi B
From: The Bronx, New York City, New York
Genre: Hip-Hop
A hit single is hard to come by. A national SMASH is even harder. Cardi B took over 2017 in every way, and now the pressure is on for her to deliver an album with just as much appeal and swagger of “Bodak Yellow”. But can she actually come through with another hit, or even a quality body of work? History say….nothing. Never has there been an artist like Cardi. Someone coming from the streets and clubs of New York, into viral fame via Instagram and Twitter videos, and making a number one smash out of a remix, is something we have never seen. Viral hits? Yes. Non-rappers turned into household names in hip-hop culture? Yes. All in one? Never.  Cardi has already made history, and will continue to do so, or at least strive to.

Freddie Gibbs
From: Gary, Indiana
Genre: Hip-Hop
The time has come. The time has come for Freddie Gibbs to once again take over the world with his talent. “Pinata” is one of the best hip-hop albums of the decade, and was received critically as such. Now with Freddie released from prison, with a solo workout that shows that the time off didn’t weaken his skills, and with Madlib on his usual tear of underground productions, the follow up in the MadGibbs discography, “Bandana”, is poised to be another juggernaut of an album. Freddie Gibbs has been an artist with the ability to bend and mold to whatever production style he is given, whether it be ethereal trap beats or sample heavy boom bap production. Nothing can stop Gangsta Gibbs from staking his claim yet again as one the best rappers alive.

Earl Sweatshirt
From: Los Angeles, California
Genre: Underground Hip-Hop
The story of the Odd Future family tree is as interesting as any musical groups story in modern times. Earl’s next studio album follows his widely heralded sophomore break into the underground, and the details are few and far between. Some speculate it’ll be a full on collab with producer Knxweldge, while others believe it could be an angrier dive into the grimy world created on “I Don’t Like Shit...I Don’t Go Outside”. No singles or verses have come from Sweatshirt, but a heavy production year (in which Earl laced underground lyricists Wiki, Mach-Hommy and Denmark Vessey) has also created the idea of a self-produced album, putting Earl into a class all his own with underground greats like Oddisee and DOOM.

Creek Boyz
From: Baltimore, Maryland
Genre: Hip-Hop
The Baltimore based crew set the internet and the hip-hop world on fire with a single like none other this year. “With My Team” managed to be a party anthem with a perfect intertwining theme of  survival in a world and city against you. Baltimore over the past decade has been a hub of violence and racial inequality, all while having no one to speak for it in music. Creek Boyz deal with 300 Entertainment could turn into the push the group needs to enter the collective conscious of music, though with the track record 300 has made for itself, it’s best to keep our hopes low.
Tumblr media
Jorja Smith
From: Walsall, England
Genre: R&B, Pop
The UK has been a hotbed for talent this past year, and Jorja Smith is a star among stars. An EP, a feature with Kali Uchis and Drake, and a few singles into her career Smith is already the most exciting singer in music. “On My Mind” is one of the most irresistible jams to come out this year, and that coupled with well shot videos and tweets confirming a full length project is in the works leads to believe that the coming year will be owned by the UK songstress. The internet has shrunk the world to which an artist like Jorja can release a few singles on Soundcloud, and within months become the focal point of the future for pop and R&B music.

Ski Mask The Slump God
From: Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Genre: Hip-Hop
The underground scene over the past few years has taken a split into two completely different directions. The traditional “underground sound” consisting of lyrically dense and experimental hip-hop like the likes of Busdriver and Aesop Rock is on one side while the other is a drug induced ragger which birthed the likes of XXXTentacion, Pouya, Ghostemane and UnoTheActivist. Somewhere in the middle lies Ski Mask The Slump God. With the beats and energy of the Soundcloud guys, and the lyrical showboating and experimentation as the other side of the split. Ski mask can rap, but the scene in which he came from has lead many to doubt and dismiss him as a fad. With music in the works with Timbaland, Busta Rhymes, and singles out with A$AP Ferg, it just shows how serious people take Ski Mask, which in the coming months might be something we won’t have a choice to do.
Tumblr media
Swae Lee & Slim Jimmi
From: Tupelo, Mississippi
Genre: Hip-Hop
Solo albums were promised, and never fulfilled, but in return the party boy duo rode the wave of their sophomore release, “SremmLife 2″ , into the beginning of 2017. The duo's single “Black Beatles” was pushed by a viral internet challenge into the #1 spot on the billboard singles chart, along with Swae Lee breaking off to give hooks to another smash hit with French Montana in the form of “Unforgettable” and the moderately successful Ty Dolla $ign cut “Don’t Judge Me”. Though a quiet year for Swae’s partner in crime Slim Jxmmi has lead to just as much excitement as the prolific year Swae conjured up. Solo projects and possibly the third installment of the SremmLife saga is in the works to make for another huge Sremm filled year.

Press Release:
NYU Libraries will display nine panels from the NAMES Project Foundation’s AIDS Memorial Quilt from September 12 to December 15 to close out New York University’s yearlong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The 12×12 foot panels represent a cross section of people lost to AIDS, including members of the trans community, incarcerated individuals, artists and activists who shaped New York’s downtown arts scene, and an NYU student.
The AIDS memorial quilt was started in 1987 by a small group of strangers who recognized the urgent need to document the lives lost to AIDS and help people understand the devastating impact of the disease. Today, the quilt serves as a powerful visual reminder of the AIDS pandemic and consists of more than 48,000 individual 3×6 foot memorial pieces sewn together by friends, lovers, and family members.
Since 1987, over 14 million people have visited the Quilt at thousands of displays worldwide. Through such displays, the NAMES Project Foundation has raised over $3 million for AIDS service organizations throughout North America. The last display of the entire AIDS Memorial Quilt was in October of 1996 when the Quilt covered the entire National Mall in Washington, D.C. The Quilt was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and remains the largest community art project in the world.
“These quilt pieces bear witness to our humanity and serve to archive our history. NYU is located in Greenwich Village, just a few blocks from St. Vincent’s Hospital, where many AIDS patients were treated and spent their final days. The intimacy and tradition of the quilt as a symbol of comfort and warmth has a long history. Each quilt is handmade, takes time, offers an opportunity for close reflection, and is a truly unique document” said Marvin J. Taylor, Curator for the Arts at NYU Libraries.
The nine panels at NYU will be shown alongside Violet Holdings: LGBTQ+ Highlights from the NYU Special Collections, an exhibition surveying queer life from the mid-1800s to the present day through a sample of materials drawn from NYU Libraries’ special collections and archives.
Each panel contains at least eight sections for those lost to the pandemic including members of the trans community; incarcerated men and women with AIDS; celebrities such as Keith Haring, Halston, Liberace, Perry Ellis, Rock Hudson, Robert Mapplethorpe, Freddie Mercury, Anthony Perkins, and Rudolf Nureyev; and other artists in New York’s downtown scene.
One panel is dedicated to performance artist Ethyl Eichelberger, artist Sharon Redd, and Dr. Peter Manzzoni, an early AIDS physician and activist, while another commemorates Cookie Mueller, an actress, author, and downtown goddess. The seventh panel includes a section for Larry Levan, a legendary DJ from Paradise Garage who is credited with inventing house music and is also represented in the Violet Holdings exhibition. Panel eight includes sections for filmmaker Marlon Riggs and poet Essex Hemphill. The final panel remembers Paul Fitz Simmons, an NYU student who did not live to see his graduation. One panel in the exhibition was made by the NYU community in 1990 to honor students, faculty, and staff members lost to AIDS.
“The AIDS crisis continues today, but from the early eighties to the late nineties it was especially hard hitting. The trauma to so many, to an LGBT generation, disproportionately felt amongst African Americans and Latinos, needs to be recognized. These quilt panels were made by survivors in memory of those who died from the illness but they also serve as arts activism, as resistance, as a call to not be silent,” said Karen Finley, an arts professor at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and co-curator of the AIDS Memorial Quilt exhibition at NYU.
“When people died, they were not given proper burials or funerals. But friends, lovers, family, and community members created this magnificent quilt to recognize and celebrate those who left us too soon. We honor the creation of this archive as an act of agency, illumination, and witnessing—a memento mori,” she continued.
The presentation of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at NYU expands upon the mission of NYU Libraries’ Downtown Collection, which documents the explosion of artistic creativity in downtown New York during the 1970s and through the early 1990s that radically challenged and changed traditional literature, music, theater, performance, film, activism, dance, photography, video and other art practices. Many artists commemorated in the Quilt display—including Larry Levan and Cookie Mueller—are also represented in NYU’s special collections and archives.

Della Reese, Music Legend and Actress Dies At 86
HOLLYWOOD, CA – AUGUST 11: Della Reese attends the ceremony honoring Roma Downey with a Star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame held on August 11, 2016 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Michael Tran/FilmMagic)
ILOSM, we have some very sad news. One of our favorite actresses and singers Della Reese, has passed away. She was a vocal powerhouse who’s style reflected the influence of such jazz precursors as Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald.
At age 86, she leaves behind children James, Franklin, and Dominique, as well as husband Franklin Lett. She was predeceased by daughter Deloreese.
“On behalf of her husband, Franklin Lett, and all her friends and family, I share with you the news that our beloved Della Reese has passed away peacefully at her California home last evening surrounded by love. She was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and pastor, as well as an award-winning actress and singer. Through her life and work she touched and inspired the lives of millions of people,” her costar Roma Downey confirmed to PEOPLE.
“She was a mother to me and I had the privilege of working with her side by side for so many years on Touched By an Angel. I know heaven has a brand new angel this day. Della Reese will be forever in our hearts. Rest In Peace, sweet angel. We love you.”
She ranged through a series of releases that showed off her mastery of standards, jazz and contemporary pop through the early ‘70s, and over the course of her career she received four Grammy Award nominations.
Her Legendary History
By 1969 she had launched her TV show “Della” – the first talk show hosted by an African-American woman – and had begun a move into an acting career that would take her to even greater national prominence.
After a number of guest appearances, Reese broke into TV full-time with a starring role in the hit 1975-78 Jack Albertson-Freddie Prinze comedy series “Chico and the Man.” Roles on “It Takes Two,” “Crazy Like a Fox,” “Charlie & Co.” and (opposite her good friend Redd Foxx) “The Royal Family.”

She also took starring roles in the features “Harlem Nights” and “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” and appeared in 20 made-for-TV pictures.
Her greatest popularity came as co-star of the inspirational CBS show “Touched by an Angel.” Though the show was axed during its debut 1994-95 season, a letter-writing campaign convinced execs to bring the series back, and Reese prevailed as the heavenly samaritan Tess for a total of nine seasons, winning seven consecutive NAACP Image Awards as best lead actress in a drama and collecting two Emmy nominations and a 1998 Golden Globe nod.

Though she continued to make TV guest appearances and took the occasional film role in the new millennium, she returned to her religious roots as the founding pastor of her own Los Angeles-based church, Understanding Principles for Better Living (or “Up”). In later years, she was frequently billed as Reverend Doctor Della Reese Lett.
She was born Delloreese Patricia Early on July 6, 1931, in Detroit. She began singing in church as a six-year-old; the glamorous black vocalist-actress Lena Horne was one of the film stars she admired as a girl. By her teens, she was working as a singer in gospel luminary Mahalia Jackson’s unit.
After graduating from Detroit’s Cass Technical High School (later attended by Diana Ross), she briefly attended Wayne State University, but soon moved into music professionally, taking Della Reese as her pro handle.

Now, this!
By Dr. Joan Cartwright
Jazz journalist Lara Pellegrinelli’s recent article Women in Jazz: Blues and The Objectifying Truth (2017), commiserated on the marginalization of women musicians in the Jazz/Blues genre, stating that the cultural assumption is that women are merely the passive vessels for male sounds (Pellegrinelli, 2017).
In response to Pellegrinelli, Terri Lynn Carrington said: When I started teaching and hearing the stories of the young women at the college, . . . I realized just because my experience was not the same as theirs, I am a part of this community and have to work toward or fight for change in any possible way that I can.  I feel great ownership in this art form and know that I belong here, and want my female students to feel the same way.
In a Huffington Post article, Carrington wrote, “On issues of racism and sexism, there can be impatience from progressives, expecting that after all this time everyone should just know better and stand on the correct side of consciousness” (Carrington, 2017).  She continued with, “feminizing or masculinizing music can be counter-productive. The studying, composing, and performing of music should be gender neutral, and I think the greatest musicians are musically ‘gender fluid’.”
I do not agree with Carrington’s statement because I have found few Jazz musicians, and certainly even fewer Classical musicians, who are willing to push forward music composed by women musicians.  My fortune was that Freddie Hubbard recorded my composition Sweet Return in 1983 on Atlantic Records.  Even though his half-German wife, the publisher, did everything in her power to stop the progress of this album because she felt there was something romantic between Freddie and me, which there was not, that composition made it into the Freddie Hubbard Song Book, much to my surprise.  Since then, I have had no other opportunities to get my music performed or recorded by any gender fluid musician, even though I have gifted several male musicians, band leaders, and arrangers with my song book.
In Black Nationalism and the Revolution in Music (1970), Frank Kofsky expounded on the words of Professor Archie Shepp, an articulate spokesperson for African-Americans. Shepp said, “the United States is culturally backward because white Americans have been unwilling to give credit to African-Americans as innovators of jazz, which he refers to as American realty – total reality.”  Shepp contends that whites “think they have a right to jazz instead of being grateful for jazz as a gift that the Negro has given.”  He said even white Americans in the jazz world “deny that jazz is first and foremost a black art created and nurtured by black people in this country out of the wealth of their historical experience” (Cartwright, 2009, p. 56).
For three centuries or more, white men have used the physical and cultural production of Africans in America to enrich themselves and their families while white women reaped the benefits in silence. White men raped African women, continually, producing a whole new group of people who were sold regardless of their relationship to their white fathers. The transition from cotton, tobacco, and sugar cane to jazz and blues as a money-making venture was as smooth as Smooth Jazz! Festivals and clubs around the world raked in millions of dollars while disowning the very people that the music came from. White musicians and educators dot the halls of conservatories and universities where jazz is taught by rote just like the classical music that issued from European concert halls.
Now, this – white women are complaining that they are marginalized in the world of Jazz. What a surprise. These same white women and their foremothers never found it odd that the music that spoke of freedom for Africans enslaved in America has become the popular music of today, without the input of African musicians.  A survey of jazz educators will result in a very low number of African professors at universities with Jazz Departments.  Professor Archie Shepp at Amherst, Dr. Larry Ridley at Rutgers, Dr. Karlton Hester at UCLA San Diego, Dr. Linda Williams at Southern University, and the handful of African-descent professors at Berklee – Terri Lynn Carrington, Patrice Rushen, and the late Geri Allen do not comprise a long list of instructors that teach the music that actually came out of their communities.
Do white people have a right to perform and teach Jazz and Blues music? This question is moot since white people believe they have a right to appropriate EVERYTHING FROM EVERYBODY and that no one should ever say anything about it in the negative.  Well, my book A History of African-American Jazz and Blues (Cartwright, 2009) discusses how The Music was appropriated, packaged, commercialized, and serendipitously stolen from its originators.  Besides the theft of the publishing royalties of great composers like Duke Ellington by publishers like Irving Mills, who managed Duke’s band for 13 years because African musicians could not belong to ASCAP or manage themselves outside of TOBA, Jazz and Blues musicians of African-descent were exploited in every way possible.
Of course, like cotton, tobacco, and sugar cane crops, Jazz and Blues were new crops that white men felt entitled to exploit to their personal benefit.  Musicians of African descent had no choice because they were barred from owning anything that they produced in the United States. Most prolific musicians died pennilessly and their families rarely benefitted from their cultural production. The following excerpt attests to that fact.
The financial pressures were exacerbated by another familiar pressure which had afflicted jazz musicians right from the start of the music – their reliance on the largely white businessmen who ran the clubs, record companies, management and booking agencies, and, most significantly, music publishing. The shaving of bands’ fees by clubowners and agents, and the practice of managers and agents adding their names to the publishing rights of tunes – and thereby claiming a share of their often lucrative proceeds – had begun early in jazz (Duke Ellington’s manager, Irving Mills, is a famous example, and while Ellington himself was never slow to claim a co-credit on works instigated by his sidemen, at least he had a musical hand in them) and, according to Dizzy, had grown no better by the time of the bebop era.
People with enough bucks and foresight to invest in bebop made some money. I mean more than just a little bit. All the big money went to the guys who owned the music, not to the guys who played it. The businessmen made much more than the musicians, because without the money to invest in producing their own music, and sometimes managing poorly what they earned, the modern jazz musicians fell victim to the forces of the market. Somehow, the jazz businessman always became the owner and got back more than his fair share, usually at the player’s expense. More was stolen from us during the bebop era than in the entire history of jazz . . . (Mathieson, 1999).
So, for white women to declare that they are barred, unfairly, from making a living in the Jazz scene is ludicrous.  White men have maintained control over the cultural production of Africans and they have no intention of relinquishing that control.  The rub is that African men will embrace white women musicians far more readily than they will women of African descent with a few exceptions like Dexter Gordon and Melba Liston.  However, Regina Carter and Teri Lynn Carrington managed to eke out a place in The Music for themselves and their art.
But most women of African descent who appeared on the Jazz scene, until recently, were shoved in a corner, rarely to be heard from.  Some of the most profound of those women were Vi Redd, Jeannie Cheatham, Dorothy Donegan, and Trudy Pitts.  Other talented musicians, like Shirley Scott and Hazel Scott, found favor because they had notable husbands – Shirley and Stanley Turrentine and Hazel and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.  Today, Mimi Jones, Shirazette Tinnin, Lakecia Benjamin, Camille Thurman, Jazmin Ghent, Gail Jhonson, Karen Briggs, and Esperanza Spaulding are making some headway.
Meanwhile, white women are courted by musicians of African descent with valor and pleasure.  For instance, Christian McBride partnered with Diana Krall and Prince endorsed Candy Dulfer (and the two white women in his band).  Perhaps, white women can pay to gain credibility by recording and performing with African-American musicians, while women of African descent cannot make that monetary layout.
As far as sexual harassment is concerned, what is it that white women do not understand about the sexual energy of white men who raped African women during slavery, while their white wives languished in plantation mansions?  Today, white men are being called out in great numbers for sexually harassing women in the workplace.  This is their modus operandi.  Is that to say that African men do not rape and sexually harass?  Heaven’s no.  It is the nature of man to hunt women like prey.
My career as a Jazz/Blues vocalist and composer spanned 50 years.  I remember several instances when I was targeted by male musicians.  However, I was able to extricate myself from the situation or rationalize why that happened.  One white man told me to take my clothing off.  When I refused, he told me I would never be anything but a secretary.  I asked him to call me a cab and went on to have a charmed career, performing in 20 countries on five continents, without ever taking my clothes off for one single opportunity to perform or record.
Maybe I am a very strong woman with principles that do not allow me to cave into the taunting of males.  One of my band members suggested that I engage in fellatio with him in a closet at a New Years’ Eve gig that I hired him for.  I did not speak to him for two years after that and I never hired him again.  Women have recourse.  Sniveling about sexual harassment without speaking out about it means nothing.  It’s a man’s world only because women allow it to be that.
Women fail to create camaraderie amongst themselves.  For 10 years, I have been the director of a non-profit organization that promotes and advocates for women musicians.  It is like pulling teeth to get women to support this organization.  They think that supporting Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc. detracts from who they are.  Women are not joiners or supporters unless they think they will get something from an organization.  They expect me to be their agent, to get them gigs, to promote them even though they refuse to pay $50 dues per year.  That’s insane.
I spent the last six years writing my dissertation Women in Jazz: Music Publishing and Marketing. My research showed that women lack sufficient business skills to succeed in the monstrously competitive world of Jazz.  Most women musicians resign themselves to teaching rather than concentrating on branding, networking, teamwork, negotiation, and accounting.  Few are adept at writing grant proposals to win financial awards to produce and perform original music.
Then, there are those that know my organization exists but minimalize it because I am not a white woman.  Well, Blues and Jazz came from the experience of African women and men in America, and just because white musicians think they own it, they never will.  They may play all the riffs and copy all the solos of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, Marylou Williams, Hazel Scott, Melba Liston, and other prolific Jazzwomen but they will never understand the burden that led to the expression of the Blues and, subsequently, Jazz.
White people harm each other – yes – but the harm they did to Africans in America was counteracted by the Blues and Jazz and they can never understand the full meaning of that because they are unwilling to give credit to African-Americans as innovators of jazz, which [Shepp referred] to as ‘American realty – total reality.’  As Shepp contended, whites ‘think they have a right to jazz’ instead of being grateful for jazz as a ‘gift that the Negro has given.’  He said even white Americans in the jazz world ‘deny that jazz is first and foremost a black art created and nurtured by black people in this country out of the wealth of their historical experience’ (Mathieson, 1999).
