hi ! have you ever read joan aiken's jane fairfax ? if so what do you think about it ?
When it comes to FF of Emma, I have a cardinal rule: Mr. Dixon and Jane Fairfax cannot be in love. This FF breaks my cardinal rule and for that reason I haven't read it (I don't mind spoilers, so I read spoiler reviews).
In my opinion, it's important that nothing was going on between Dixon and Jane because Emma makes that up, and then Frank kind of leans in as cover for his engagement to Jane. If Dixon and Jane were a thing, it makes Emma correct which kind of defeats the whole point of the story, which is that Emma's imagination runs away on her and she is blinded to the truth of Frank and Jane. Emma is trying to explain why Jane didn't go to Ireland and the piano, we know the reason, it's because she's engaged and Frank bought it for her!
My only other cardinal rule is Northanger Abbey FF can't have any real murder/curses/ghosts for the same reason. The point is that Catherine's imagination ran away on her! If you make her wild theories correct than Henry is the niave one! (I guess I might read it if it was very well done...) Northanger Abbey is about mundane evil.

1st June: Mr. Knightley is suspicious
Read the post and comment on WordPress
Read: Vol. 3, ch. 5 [41]; pp. 224 (“In this state of schemes” to “seemed somewhat out of place”).
Context
The Campbells push their return from Ireland back from Midsummer, at the end of June, to August; Jane is thus to stay in Highbury longer than planned. Mr. Knightley dines with the Randalls family and Jane at the Eltons’, and sees several looks cast at Jane Fairfax by Frank Churchill that lead him to suspect the latter of some double-dealing with respect to Emma.
We know that this occurs as “June open[s]” (p. 224).
Note that this write-up contains spoilers.
Readings and Interpretations
Discretion and Indiscretion
The opening of this chapter gives us an overview of the disposition of various characters. Per Alistair Duckworth, “an insidious note is present from the first sentence” of the chapter (“In this state of schemes, and hopes, and connivance…” p. 224) (p. 171). Loraine Fletcher notes that the action begins to escalate from this point onwards:
In chapter 41 we first begin to see the action through Knightley’s eyes. There are many different plots to resolve: ‘In this state of schemes, and hopes, and connivances, June opened upon Hartfield’. In the word game at Hartfield, the strawberry-picking at Downwell Abbey and the picnic and word game on Box Hill, episodes that succeed each other, the confusion between Emma’s and the narrator’s fiction is at its most intense. As the heroine’s imaginary world breaks down, all actions become increasingly inexplicable to her, and uncontrollable--even her own […]. As Knightley watches we know that some resolution is coming. He has learned enough from Emma to see that he too may be capable of imaginative blundering, something that Emma never suspects. (p. 40)
For David Medalie, this passage
reveals a tension between competing ‘stories’ or narratives. The most beguiling is the one which declares Emma to be the ‘indisputable’ object of Frank Churchill, since this narrative coincides with a general desire to see Emma and Frank united in marriage. This outcome is what would gratify the little society of Highbury; it amounts, therefore, to a form of communal self-satisfaction. The blindness which proceeds from this prevents the onlookers from ‘reading’ the situation correctly—establishing yet again the link between self-satisfaction and false knowledge. For all the goodwill it implies, the story of Frank’s ‘pursuit of Emma’ constitutes a partiality which is nevertheless entirely lacking in ‘sympathy’ (in the sense in which Hume and Smith use the term), since there is none of the distance which objectivity requires and no awareness of the fallaciousness of expecting that other people’s wishes will inevitably coincide with one’s own.
It requires ‘sympathy’ to unlock the secret and recognise the situation for what it is, as opposed to what people wish it to be; and Mr Knightley is identified here as astutely ‘sympathetic’, using close and precise observation and his knowledge of human behaviour to uncover the ‘private understanding’ between Jane and Frank. He manages to overcome his own emotional involvement—his dislike of Frank, and feelings of jealousy towards him—in order to attain a level of disinterestedness which allows him a certain distance and, therefore, a measure of objectivity. Empirical observation precedes cognition: covert glances and hints of subterfuge between the two become apparent to him before he understands fully their significance. (p. 9)
Discussion Questions
Is Knightley, as Medalie claims, a disinterested observer in this instance? Has he uncovered the truth of the situation?
What does Knightley’s suspicion suggest about the nature of observation and knowledge in Emma?

Kin: Season 1, Episode 7, Part 1
It’s episode 7 of the first season of Kin and you know what that means? Bren time! Buckle up cause we’ve got a bad dad and a hot but ill-conceived kiss to cover.
Reminder: these recaps have spoilers for the entire first season. One more episode and you too will know everything that happens in the first season of Kin, if you don’t already.
See the masterlist here.
Now who's ready for some illicit kissing???
Tumblr media
The episode starts off in jail where Eric is waiting, head in his hands, for his lawyer, Donal. He’s also Michael’s lawyer, you’ll remember, though he will not be Amanda’s.
Tumblr media
Donal tells Eric he’s looking at charges for attempted murder. All at once Eric looks like a little boy again who doesn’t quite understand the consequences of his actions.
Tumblr media
Eric suggests they try the original plan, that Fudge was the shooter and he just drove, but Donal counsels him to shut his trap until they find out what the police have on him and to prepare for the worst. Eric asks to speak to Nikki before he’s charged.
Tumblr media
Out in the wilds of Ireland, Eamon strides across the grass with his blanket hanging from his back like a cape. His feet are bare. Any revelations he had while high have quickly been papered over; he looks pissed.
At the dealership, Amanda calls Anthony to let him know about the raid and Dotser.
Tumblr media
He does his best to hide his upset, which is not very well. Anthony’s actor does a really good job here.
Tumblr media
They hang up and her lawyer arrives. Amanda wants someone who isn’t known for defending criminals, which is a pretty good plan.
Tumblr media
Somewhere in Dublin, Con Doyle and Mini Michael torture one of the Kinsella's dealers. They’re looking for the drugs but Frank’s tight circle of confidence has shut out everyone but immediate family. Eamon, over the phone and back in his suit, growls at them to find someone who knows something. Mini Michael kills the dealer before they bounce.
Tumblr media
At the compound, Birdy tries to calm Frank, who’s upset about Dotser. Michael is there for some reason, though he quickly gets called away by the Garda.
Tumblr media
There’s a social worker here to see him. He leaves and Birdy, after saying that if someone had to die it’s best it was Dotser, firmly tells Frank to put on his big boy pants and find a solution. “You have to find a way out of this, Frank,” she says, “we can’t go on living like this.” Good luck with that, sister.
Tumblr media
At Michael’s, Anna's social worker serves Michael with a court order barring him from seeing or communicating with Anna. Michael tries to make his case but she shuts him down hard. Again, I understand wanting to protect Anna from Michael’s violent life but they are going about it in the worst way possible. Also, as the daughter of a social worker, I feel confident saying a social worker would never talk to Michael the way she’s talking to Michael.
Tumblr media
I'm so interested in hearing other people's opinions about this whole situation. See here for more pics of this scene and my thoughts.
Tumblr media
At school, Anna waits for her nan to pick her up. She’s embarrassed and annoyed but her nan insists. I’m not gonna argue with a woman whose daughter was killed by the same man putting her granddaughter in danger, but it’s still a bad plan.
Tumblr media
Back at the dealership, Amanda and her lawyer talk brass tacks. In summary, if found guilty of money laundering for an organized crime gang, Amanda is looking at six to ten years in prison. It's not great, Bob.
Tumblr media
At the compound Amanda finds Michael, Jimmy, Frank and Birdy waiting in the snake room. She tells them what happened at the dealership, mainly, the police took everything and she’s most definitely fucked. Frank brings up Donal but Amanda tells them she has her own lawyer now.
Amanda: I warned you this would happen Frank.
Birdy: Frank did what he thought was best.
Amanda: Well it wasn’t good enough.
Go off! Whew. Amanda is shaking with barely contained rage. Jimmy, meanwhile, is caught between his loyalties to Frank and Amanda. It’s obviously just now occurring to him that Amanda could be punished for all the super illegal things she’s been doing on the family’s behalf, which has tipped his loyalties in her direction. It’s such a drastic change from his regular settings. His face is a Blue Screen of Death. Poor Jimmy.
Tumblr media
Birdy tries to freeze the increasingly hostile Amanda out (‘be careful what you tell that woman’) and Michael glumly tells her to shove it. Yes yes yes.
Tumblr media
Frank explains the reason they’re there. His small operation has backfired and with Eric going to prison it’s just the five of them against Eamon. Birdy is going to talk to Eamon as a last bid for compromise. She believes he won’t hurt her because of their history. She’ll offer to return the drugs to get him to lay off. If that doesn’t work, their next best option (for the men, anyway) is to run. Somewhere abroad, not Spain.
Tumblr media
No one looks happy about that.
Tumblr media
Amanda leaves to get trashed. We catch up with her on the roof doing a line of coke, a giant glass of alcohol in front of her.
Tumblr media
Michael comes out to join her. MICHAEL. Amanda just found out she may be going to jail and her husband may have to flee the country and it’s Michael who checks on her. Jimmy’s not making a great case for himself, is what I’m saying.
Amanda: I figured it was either feel sorry for myself or get fucking wasted. So here I am. Doing both.
<3 Amanda.
Tumblr media
Amanda asks about Anna. That conversation with the social worker has turned him around on the matter- Michael’s not going to see her anymore. He brings up their conversation from the first episode, to stay out of Anna’s life because it’s what’s best for her. They both look very sad and resigned.
Before we move on, please observe their seating arrangement.
Tumblr media
Outside the compound, Frank meets Donal for an update on Eric’s case.
Tumblr media
The cops have Eric on camera and there’s an eyewitness. So, Eric’s screwed. Frank knows Eric won’t survive in prison with Eamon out to get him but he also won’t survive protective custody. Donal suggests Frank talk to Bren for help. Can’t wait!
At Birdy’s, Birdy talks to Nikki about Eric’s imprisonment. She doesn’t sugarcoat things but she does try to normalize them- he’s going in but Nikki can stay at his house while he’s gone and hang out with the family all she wants. By the way, have they thought of having kids?
Tumblr media
Nikki looks upset and then mildly horrified. This is not the sexy/dangerous life she was promised!
One thing Birdy mentions that I find interesting, she talks about how watching your significant other go to jail or prison is part of the life. If you’re going to be involved with a criminal, you have to be prepared to lose them for years at a time. Frank interrupts this depressing conversation with the news that, yep, Eric is screwed.
Tumblr media
At his hotel, Eamon eats dinner and grills Con about Amanda, who is unreachable. Eamon’s given up pretending he cares about Con’s kid and the Kinsellas threat against him. Eamon tells Con this is his fault and to get his damn drugs back.
Back at the compound, Amanda and Michael are still hanging out on the roof. Please observe their new position.
Tumblr media
Amanda reminisces on the last night she was on the roof, the night Jamie was killed. She tries to take the blame for Caolan Moore’s death but Michael doesn’t let her. Dude got what he had coming. But thinking of Jamie and his death, and everything that’s happened since then, has Amanda thinking of all the moments she’ll miss in Anthony’s life, moments she’s already missed out with Jamie.
Tumblr media
Amanda tries to dwell on things, but Michael stops her self pity in its tracks. He tells her to fix it, to not just accept she’s going to jail because people are telling her she is.
Amanda: Isn’t that what you did? You pleaded guilty?
Michael: That’s different. I wanted to be punished, didn’t I?
OOF.
He tells her she’s smart enough to find a way out. He’s so assured of her intelligence and competence, totally nonchalant about it. Amanda is awesome, she’ll come up with a solution, no big deal. That shit’s like catnip to women. Amanda shrugs off her blanket and leans into Michael’s space. They meet in the middle for a kiss. It’s hot.
Tumblr media
Michael: Are you trying to blow everything up?
Amanda: (Takes a minute to think about it) Boom.
Sorry, I love them.
And then it gets even better, because Jimmy shows up. Michael and Amanda scurry away from one another, like a couple of teenagers getting caught making out by their parents.
Tumblr media
Jimmy’s been looking for Michael everywhere. He just finished talking to Frank, who told him about the field trip to visit Bren. Jimmy won’t go without the go ahead from Michael.
Tumblr media
Michael’s confused for a moment, then very embarrassed. He stutters out his permission and awkwardly hightails it out of there.
Tumblr media
What happened between Michael and Bren?! It’s a big enough deal that Jimmy felt the need to ask for Michael’s blessing to visit him, and Amanda did not look surprised by this. Is it related to the mysterious head injury???? I need to know! Also, Jimmy is being such a good brother here, which makes me think some of Michael’s awkwardness (and he is SUPER awkward) is due to guilt, seeing as he was just kissing Jimmy’s wife. It’s good.
The scene isn’t over but I’m out of images for this post. Part 2 is here!

Wayfaring, do you have any fiction book recommendations? :)
Sure! I typically read a good mix of fiction and nonfiction, but this year I actually was more fiction heavy, and there were some really good ones. None except The Pull of the Stars are remotely medical. I keep my medical reading in the nonfiction realm. I’ll try to give a teeny summary of each.
Gold Diggers, by Sanjena Sathian. An Indian American family in Georgia try to get ahead in life using a magical mix of Ayurveda and alchemy, but the illicit source of their supplies get them in trouble.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, by Taylor Jenkins Reid. An aging and very private movie star gives her life story to a no-name magazine reporter. Very early in the book spoiler alert: her soul mate is not among the husbands.
Such a Fun Age, by Kiley Reid. A white influencer tries to save her black babysitter who has had a video of one of her public experiences with racism go viral against her wishes.
The Midnight Library, by Matt Haig. There are infinite possible directions your life could go in, and the protagonist gets a chance to sample some of her other lives which have been driven by different choices she has made. When your life is a choose your own adventure novel, you quickly see that the adventures are not always what you thought they’d be.
The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell, by Robert Dugoni. An ophthalmologist with ocular albinism looks back on how he ran from what he was told was God’s will in Catholic school and discovers his purpose in life with the help of his 2 lifelong best friends.
The Lost Apothecary, by Sarah Penner. A history buff on vacation discovers an old medicine bottle in the Thames and sets off to uncover the 200 year old mystery of a secret apothecary shop that “helped out” women in dangerous marriages.
The Darkest Child, by Dolores Phillips. Tangy Mae Quinn is the darkest skinned of her mother’s 10 children, and her mother hates her for it. None of her siblings have fathers, but her mother, a prostitute, values them based on their skin tone and forces them all to leave school and work from age 12 as field laborers or housekeepers. Tangy Mae is destined to follow her mother into sex work but she has won a spot in the high school’s first integrated class and she is bound and determined to avoid her mother’s influence.
The Pull of the Stars, by Emma Donoghue. Ireland, WWI, 1919 flu pandemic, a struggling understaffed maternity ward. A nurse is helped by a young volunteer and a rebel female doctor evading the police. Over the course of 3 days they face life, death, and secret love, changing each others’ lives in the process.
The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters, by Balli Kaur Jaswal. Three British born Punjabi sisters who are as different as they could possibly be from each other grudgingly honor their mother’s wish to spread her ashes together in their homeland. Along the way they make many unexpected discoveries about themselves, their mother, and the last trip she took to India.
Medicine Walk, by Richard Wagamese. Eldon is drinking himself to death. He calls his 16 year old son Frank, with whom he has had little to no relationship, and asks him to accompany him through the mountains to give Eldon a traditional Ojibway burial. The two connect over Eldon’s telling of his difficult life of poverty, war, and addiction.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, by V.E. Schwab. Addie is born in 1714 and makes a deal with a devil to live forever. For 300 years she is forgotten by everyone she meets, until she stumbles across a bookstore clerk who remembers her name.
The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls, by Anissa Gray. When Althea and her husband Proctor are arrested , their reputations as pillars of the community are smashed. Althea’s sisters join forces to raise Althea’s daughters in the house they grew up in to keep them away from their brother Joe, a now charming but once extremely cruel pastor.
Transcendent Kingdom, by Yaa Gyasi. A Ghanaian- American PhD candidate studies addiction in mice, hoping to one day find a cure for the disease of addiction that killed her beloved brother. As she searches in science for answers to her life’s problems she grapples with the faith from her childhood in Alabama which now eludes her.
The Wife Upstairs, by Rachel Hawkins. Jane, a gold digging broke dog walker goes after a gated community’s most eligible widower, Eddie Rochester. As they fall for each other she wonders if she can measure up to the legendary memory of his self made millionaire deceased wife. Rumors about his wife’s mysterious death circulate around the community and Jane has her own suspicions as well as her own secrets to hide. A modern take loosely based on Jane Eyre.
The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, by Stuart Turton. Agatha Christie meets Groundhog Day. Evelyn Hardcastle will die every day until her killer is identified. Aiden Bishop must save her, but to add another layer of difficulty he will wake up in the body of a different houseguest every day. Definitely would recommend reading the hard copy and not the audio version, as it’s very twisty and hard to follow on audible.

This shit is fake bby!!!
Here she is.. My masterpost of all the dumb, illogical bits of info contained within these s15 “leaks” that make me fairly confident they are complete bullshit. It also includes my little tinhat theories that have absolutely no evidence.
I will be putting it all under a Readmore in case you don't want to risk it or if you simply Do Not Care
First up, I'd like to point out that these call sheets repeatedly give very detailed backstories to characters that have few lines which conveniently paints a picture of each episode's plot. And I'm not an expert so correct me if I'm wrong, but after looking at other similar casting calls, they only ever include the demographic and necessary skills.
Basically who in their right mind would write up casting calls that give away so many spoilers? Seems like that could cause and issue if they were leaked lol. But anyway that's my 1st point. But onto the actual content
Tumblr media
So the conceit of this episode as a whole is that during the pandemic, the gang "gamed the system" and received three (3!) Loans to start businesses that went bankrupt. One of these businesses is implied to be the one started by dee and charlie who end up selling to Qanon shaman. Already this is so impossible baby.
1. We've already seen the gang try to get a loan and it didn't work. They don't have good ideas. Ur telling me, they managed to finagle 3 separate loans for 3 separate business ideas from an actual bank?
2. Maybe I just have bad reading comprehension but how does one have a business that is both fictitious and bankrupt?
3. If the customer is supposed to be Qanon shaman, an actual real life guy, why are the only descriptors white and male? They say he's shirtless so are they going to paint on all of the tattoos he has? And if so, doesn't that kind of ruin the dramatic reveal when charlie "throws in" the viking helmet? Why would he do that anyways? Sus.
Moving on
Tumblr media
Alright this episode would fucking blow for obvious reasons but im going to refrain from looking at this through my gay dennis thruther lens because im biased.
Purely from a narrative standpoint, a woman hasn't been shown to be interested in dennis in nearly 5 years during the wade boggs episode. Ever since, every single woman he approaches has been actively creeped out by him. And now I'm supposed to believe that 3 "smart, passionate woman" (In Their Twenties!!!!!!) agreed to go on a date with him? And Anna even slept with him! Just because he what? Agreed with her? I'm not buyin it.
Plus the concept of this scenario lacks any potential for comedy. When iasip gets political, they always discuss a very specific topic using hyperbolic situations and flawed metaphors. If this is supposed to be a political episode, what ultimately lukewarm point would rob be trying to make here? So far we know they're ranting about
The patriarchy
Privilege
Socialism
No more personal responsibility(?)
The... nature of power in society(??)
How on earth would an episode like get approved? This shit sounds like a Ted talk. It sounds like it was written specifically to sound like a political episode so boring and pointless it would generate outrage and mile long essay posts from Tumblr users and reddit users alike. Almost like this one lol.
On a completely unrelated note, do not try and convince me that Frank "casual cock ring wearer" Reynolds is unable to perform.
Jeez this is getting out of hand fast. Let's move on
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok now we're starting to getting into the Ireland of it all. Let me go on a bit of a tangent here about all this.. Now I thinq there are just 3 possibilities. Either this is all a publicity stunt and there is some truth to the Ireland rumors, the entire thing could be bogus from some weirdo fan (ps, if a fan did write this I want you to know I fucking hate you. You did this to me), or it is a publicity stunt but Ireland is just more bullshit.
I am going to assume it was a publicity stunt, otherwise I just wasted my entire evening and I can't have that kind of mentality rn. Additionally, I'm Going to tinhat here for a second and say that the Ireland rumors are true, but the details are different.
I say this because if they were going to do filming in Ireland, they probably figured that that information would be impossible to hide. In essence, my completely unfounded hypothesis is that this leak was their fucked up little way of controlling the situation while simultaneously messing with us.
Ok tangent is over, returning to the casting calls. From the looks of it, dee starts a "scam" acting class and has some very devoted students (Note that Tony was also the name of the porn shop owner. Seems weird!) Presumably after the gang replaces her with a monkey as the title suggests.
Honestly, there isn't too much here that's a red flag to me... seems like a nice little dee-centric episode that is the link to the Dublin angle. Assuming I am At All right, this could be a genuine plotline for Dee. However, the monkey could be a red herring and there could be a whole different side plot with the guys. who's to say. Next one!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah yes this is the dennis we all know and despise.. no red flags for me here really, I'm also running out of steam because idk if it shows, but I am majorly sleep deprived atm. Anyway I'm going to the next one
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay this is where things start getting weird again ough a migraine just hit, anyway back to my earlier point about how casting calls would never contains major spoilers bc the people who see these wont be under any kind of NDA..
These ones reveal that bonnie dies. Again, that info wouldn't be in a casting call.
But also they suggest charlie has a irish penpal named Shelley who is his biological father. First off charlie is illiterate, although as pointed out by @undeadbreeze shelley could also be communicating in symbols. However, this scenario is still unbelievable to me for a couple reasons:
1. Bonnie's last name is Kelly obviously, and we know it's her maiden name because Jack's last name is also Kelly. But Shelley's last name is... also Kelly? In the context of this big ol hoax, it feels like it was written to show that look! his last name is the same as charlie's! That's how you know that's his dad! But It would be way too big of a coincidence if charlie's dad happened to have the same last name bonnie.
And 2. There's the whole mystery of charlie's long-lost sister from 'charlie got molested' but never any mention of a brother which according to this, shelley has been pretending to be his brother for years. And we all know how much rcg loves their continuity, it seems uncharacteristically lazy to just tack this on without any prior buildup.
And finally let me talk about mac for a second and specifically the line in gus's summary "both are gay men who are attracted to the priesthood for all the wrong reasons"
Iasip has commented on pedophilia in the priesthood many times in the past which leads me to believe that they are implying that mac is a pedophile? Please let me know if I completely misread the implications of that statement, but if not, then that is completely insane and one of the biggest indictators that this is fake. Mac is awful, just like everyone in the gang but he is definitely not a pedophile.
However even if i did completely misread that, it's still proof this is fake.. For all his faults, Rob put a surprising amount of care and effort into mac's coming-out. It hasn't been perfect, but Mfhp in particular firmly established that mac's faith is integral to his identity so Its unlikely that rob would throw all of that away for a cheap shot at priests.
Ok my brain is irradiated sludge at this point, but in conclusion. I hope that 1. I'm right, at least about it being fake (Otherwise damb that'll be so humiliating for me) And 2. This eases ur fears a bit. I don't want to lose all faith in future seasons bc I love iasip and miss the gang. If you read this far youre insane but I literally love you so goddamn much because I spent so so long tapping this out on my silly little phone
Please feel free to add on or message me your thoughts and opinions I need to know I'm not the only one who uhhh went a bit insane. And finally: whoever made these is a cunt. Mwah.

Atlas is a Child AU
(BIOSHOCK SPOILERS)
I brought this up to a friend before, but I’m bringing it up again here. Keep in mind it’s 8 AM and I probably didn’t edit this before posting so some things may not make sense. Also I’m disregarding Burial At Sea entirely because I haven’t played it yet so I haven’t got the faintest idea what’s canon and what isn’t so we’re just going off Bioshock 1 lore for now. Also there may be OOC moments for the sake of fluff. You have been warned.
TW for some cursing, runaway mention, not so great “father” figure and the word “kill” thrown around multipe times (once in reference to the near death of a minor).
A while back, about a year before Rapture, Frank was in Ireland for another con and he picked up a little shadow. A scruffy little black-haired kid with a foul mouth and smart-ass attitude. He was annoying as Hell but he happily did whatever tasks Frank told him to (which went from “just to get you out of my hair” to “legitimately helping me”) so he wound up bonding with the little bastard whether he admitted it to himself or not. To the point he gave the kid a nickname--Atlas, since he was his “support”. The kid started introducing himself as Atlas and he never told Frank his legal name so it stuck.
When Frank left, he took Atlas with him...Though not by choice. Little fucker stowed away with him and begged to stay when he was caught. Apparently the seven-year-old was a runaway and wouldn’t go back home if you paid him--besides, Frank’s line of work was much more interesting than stealing food and getting into fights with other kids. Since the boat they were on was too far away from Ireland to return under the same guise of night, Frank let him stay--but as soon as they got back to America the kid’s out of there. Atlas swore up and down he’d leave him alone when they reached land; he just wanted out of Ireland.
This kid was SEVEN and he hated his home land so much that winding up stranded was the better deal. Needless to say, that didn’t happen. The cocky little shit grew on Frank again and he took him back to his temporary living space when they arrived in America.
Skip about half a year, to the existence of Rapture. The place is mind-blowing enough to an adult, imagine it through the eyes of a kid. Atlas’ gotta see everything! Sadly he doesn’t get the chance. Frank is here for one reason and one reason only: to get his hands on the place and make himself the king. When the brat’s not working with him, he’s learning everything he can about Andrew Ryan. The poor kid can’t even make friends.
That is...Until Jack is born.
Atlas was put in charge of Jack as his protector of sorts; keeping him out of trouble, stopping him from seeing anyone outside their little circle, that kind of thing. Bonding with him wasn’t part of the deal. However Jack’s the closest thing to a fellow kid Atlas has come in contact with since before he came to Rapture; so of course he’s gonna latch on to him. They bond throughout Jack’s speed-run of life up to the point he has to leave Rapture for the final portion of Frank’s plan. Both kids were a wreck, but Atlas was warned not to get attached and gets no sympathy. You brought that mess upon yourself.
In the same vein, Frank’s “alter ego” Atlas is born almost the same time. Atlas (the child) is floored that Frank thought highly of him enough to make a revolution leader based off him. His idol idolizes him too?! Holy shit! (He doesn’t. Frank was just put a little on the spot and went with him as a character. Having a literal Atlas around was helpful in the long run, at least: he had a body double (albeit one almost half his height) to take the fall for him.)
Shit hits the fan, Rapture falls, people are locked in, a civil war starts. Atlas and Frank (who Atlas’ admiration of took a hit due to him ripping away his best (and only) friend) go into hiding and screw with Ryan. Atlas is almost killed in an attempt to make him a living Adam dispenser like the Sisters, Frank is oddly put off by this and gives Suchong what for over “trying to kill [his] protegee”. Never mind the fact he TOLD Suchong to do it... Atlas survives, but there’s a scar across his stomach as proof of the event. The scar still makes Frank’s skin crawl for reasons he hates.
Jack returns, things go to further Hell and Atlas is put to work helping him along in any way he can without being seen. He manages okay and things go like normal...Until the final fight.
Atlas’ opinion of Frank had been swinging back and forth between being in favour of him and being afraid of him as time went on. Being forced to turn on Jack made him turn on Frank, though an extremely one-sided fight put an end to that quickly. Now he’s still against Frank but he’s also afraid of him. Come the time of the boss fight, Frank had been shooting up on Adam like there’s no tomorrow and taunting Jack to the point some of his own followers were starting to question him. Then he went further by bringing Atlas to the battle with him. What reasons he had for bringing a LITERAL CHILD to a STANDOFF, he didn’t provide, but he at least kept Atlas out of the fighting and shouted at him if he tried to come in and assist.
The plan was initially for Atlas to take care of the Little Sisters after the fight (since it wasn’t hard to figure out that they were the ones following Jack around like puppies) and give all their remaining ADAM to Frank, making him even more incredibly powerful. That...Didn’t happen. What did happen was Atlas had the lovely view of the Sisters stabbing the Hell out of his former idol and draining him of his ADAM until it killed him.
Surprisingly, he went nuts. Didn’t get far, however--he only managed to tackle one Sister before the others went for him and probably would have killed him too if Jack hadn’t stopped them. His beef was with Frank, “Atlas”, not this kid that all but appeared out of nowhere and was now shaking so hard he was vibrating from fear. Not this kid that was once his friend.
Needless to say, Atlas was spared and brought to the surface with the Sisters. Having Jack go from a friend to a father was a little bit strange, but...It was nice to have a family again. A more close family. One that cared about him as more than just “support” or a body double.

French Musical Recommendations?/review (Part 3)
This is a mix between recommendations and shows I don’t like and shows I just know exist but don't know a lot about. Even if I’m not too much a fan of some of the show I would still check these shows out for the fun of it, maybe its not my cup of tea but it is for someone else. Again my French is lacking so if the lyrics aren’t great I wouldn’t really know unless I sat down and read them which I didn’t do.
Robin des Bois (2013):
what to say about this show... I’ll start with the summary: Robin Hood and Marianne break up pre-show and have their own groups going on. Marianne also has a son with robin but robin has no idea about him. Sheriff of Nottingham starts attacking so Marianne asks robin for help. Also the sheriff figures out about robin’s son and so he imprisons the kid and surprise! there a romance between Nottingham’s daughter and Robin Hood’s son.
Yep, haven’t seen the show, really don’t mind the plot sounds interesting enough. I’ve only listened to the soundtrack once and all I got to say is that it’s not great. The cast is lovely and look really sweet and friendly with each other, but all the songs really just sound like basic pop. To be clear without understanding the lyrics and just listening to it with not visuals, I found the soundtrack quite boring, so maybe I’m just missing something. My favourite songs are “Le flèche et la cible,” (the piano makes it sound like an anime opening or something, liked the drums too, and the vocals are nice) and “On est là” (it’s a really weird one, I couldn’t put my finger on it but after playing it for someone I got the decisive answer of it is very 80′s, the instrumentals really threw me off but hey it’s catchy). Also some songs had a bass line that also threw me off, just wasn’t expecting it. like the one in “la Providence,” maybe it’s just me. And one last thing about the songs, what the hell is ”Notting hill Nottingham” like that title is also the chorus and I’m just?? maybe if I understood the rest of the lyrics it would make sense? aside from the debatable chorus line, the drums are a blast in this song. Clips and music videos available on YouTube along with a behind the scenes two part video on the official musical’s channel.
Non-Music: well the costumes are ok, don’t love them but don’t hate them either, though friar tuck’s is debatable, from the bits I’ve seen most of the background is done with a screen which is fine, it’s more of a concert style show anyway, I’m a big fan of the ladder trees though, the dancing and acrobatics is probably the highlight of the show (again only saw bits but it looks good)
Tumblr media
Dracula l'amour plus fort que la mort (2012): This is different from the Frank Wildhorn Dracula musical, Dracula: A chamber Musical and the Swedish Dracula musical. Unsurprisingly this musical is based on Stoker Dracula telling which I never read so I don’t know how much it follows that text. It was also inspired by the 1992 Coppola film (which again I have never watched). I won’t be too helpful about plot summary but it follows the general novel plot with Jonathan Harker engaged with Mina Murray goes off to Dracula’s castle for work. Things happen, the issue with Lucy occurs then Mina is targeted by Dracula and Harker with the Dr. Seward and Helsing go to kill Dracula to save Mina. There also seems to be a subplot where Mina was Dracula’s lover in a past life, which is shown through dance sequences throughout the show.Music wise it’s mainly rock pop which is up my alley. Personally, just based on music and not lyrics I like “Encore”, “Elles”, “ Le Ciel et l'Enfer” “ La Dernière danse” and maybe “L'Amour et son Contraire”.  The full show is available on YouTube.
Non-music: This show goes hard on edgy imagery. I personally quite liked the general over the top modernish gothic vibe. The dancers are great and quite liked some of the limited palette scene. The opening shadow puppet scene was cool. The only part I really had issue with is maybe the CGI 3d video scene. It was cool at times but the CGI is not great which is not their fault, but kind of distracted me. Also if you watch it there is this scene where Harker is laying in a large Pieta statue (minus the Jesus) and it’s just great. Like edgy church imagery with vampires? sign me up. There’s also this Vampire dream sequence in a bed because of course every vampire musical needs one (Tanz der Vampire if you know what I mean). Harker is in bed and vampire women come out from the bed (the bed itself is a hollow prop where dancers are hiding within and pop out from the holes hidden by the puffy bedding), the bed itself could have been more decorative with posts (like tanz) but still a really cool scene, Almost forgot, Mina and Dracula are played by dancers so they don’t really sing, especially Dracula he does not speak at all. Costumes are fun to look at, some are the best but I appreciated the general look of the show so I’m not that bothered. I strangely grew to like the spiney Dracula costumes, I think the fact he didn’t talk and just danced helped me like the costume more.
Overall, fun show so if pop rock is your vibe this show you should check it out.
Tumblr media
Cindy Cendrillion (2002): This show is not good, but I had a blast laughing about it as I watched it so I recommend it. Let me clarify, my dislike is not due to the cast, in general I thought singing and dancing and all that were really good, what gets me is how dated it is now (it is really early 2000’s vibes and some of the plot is debatable). Show is available split into two acts on YouTube.
So the plot is pretty much a retelling of the Cinderella story in a modern early 2000′s setting. Cindy (Cinderella) is the daughter of an recently disappeared Irish pilot. and she lives with her step mother and sisters who are mean to her. She has a passion for dancing the jig, I’m assuming they are referencing Irish step to a certain degree. She goes out in night to dance but her step-mother threatens to kick her out if she doesn’t come home before midnight. A super star named Ricky (Prince Charming) has a Birthday ball and sees Cindy and falls in love. Also Ricky had a model Fiancée Judy who he breaks it off with to pursue Cindy. Spoilers now... Ricky writes a song where one can dance “the jig” to so they hold a competition to find a dancer for it, guess who wins? Cindy.. they fall in love... but Judy realises it’s all over for her and Ricky ands faxes him so mean message then commits suicide by overdosing on drugs. Cindy gets scared and leaves Ricky to Ireland. Ricky tracks her down and they fly away in a spaceship?! honestly this plot is just sure something.
Okay.... um if you read the spoiler section of the summary you’ll know how wild this show is. For those who haven’t warning there is an suicide by overdosing on drugs in the show. Music wise it’s alright, I watched the show but all the songs are quite forgettable because I was so distracted by the plot. Again the vocals are nice so perhaps I just need to listen to audio only, though I’m unsure about some of the lyrics.
Non-Music: I have so much to rant about this show. First off it’s just weird that her Irish pilot dad keeps appearing in like spiritual form. Also Cindy is not spectacular at dancing, which is hilarious during the jig dancing competition you have actual dancer ensemble members doing cool moves and in general good dancing but at the end Cindy comes stepping around and twirling a bit, the same choreography she does every time she danced the jug in the show and then wins the competition. Honestly, they should of just done full Irish step dancing and had the actress trained in it or to be more practical had a double for Cindy that was obscured to trick the audience into thinking this double was Cindy. The actress was lovely and maybe she can dance but “the jig” choreography was so pathetic compared to the ensemble’s part, even the ensemble part was weird.. maybe I just don’t understand what “jig” dancing is. Also the ending was so random to me, maybe it’s because of my lacking French, I get there were references to space throughout the show but WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT ENDING. Well stage wise it was interesting at parts. I like the large center column piece that had platforms on it that moved around the pillar. Cindy’s love song to Ricky with her in front of a large Ricky Magazine and two screens showing zoom ups on Ricky was weird. Finally, costumes, really dated and tacky but I think they were quite fun. The only complaint I really have is Ricky, he wears this half tank top half leather jacket look, and it’s really a single tiddy out look.
Tumblr media
Starmania (1979): Let me start by saying I DON’T hate this show I just know little about it. I’ve watched bits a few years ago and only really recall one song. It’s one of THE French musicals, I mean I wouldn’t know for certain but you’ll see it’s quite popular and covered by newer musicals cast member (like Mozart L’Opera Rock). The photo is from a more recent production which is different from the original costumes. As a show it’s set in a futuristic society so there is some surreal techno outfits and set pieces, which are actually quite cool. It’s pretty much about a gang called the Black Stars who are trying to rebel against a billionaire turned politician Zéro Janvier. There is romance plots, the wiki has more info on that. In general, the singing is great and from the parts I’ve seen it looks interesting despite the show aesthetic being really not my thing. Full versions of the show are available on YouTube, the production done in English is also posted on YouTube. I would say if you are trying to get into French Musicals this is a good one to listen to as well as it’s kind of a classic but I hesitate as the visuals look a bit weird due to the futuristic element (kind of remind me if starlight Express when it comes to costume) but if this isn’t you cup of tea there are plenty of other shows as well.
Tumblr media
Résiste (2015): It’s a French Jukebox Musical. It’s one of those one artist jukebox musicals, so all the songs were originally sung by France Gall and written by Michel Berger. It’s about five friends (I think they’re friends), two of whom are sisters. The sisters work with their dad at the family bar/night club. The plot revolves around something tragic happening and the five friends trying to deal and grow from it? (probably something to do with the night club)I haven't seen it so I have no idea what the tragic event is. I didn’t know any of the songs before this musical but it’s quite catchy and fun. Clips of the show and songs are available on YouTube.

Kin: Season 1, Episode 6, Part 1
It's time for part 1 of the episode 6 recap of the first season of Kin. In this episode: Amanda sniffs out a rat; Michael goes on another bad idea father/daughter outing with Anna; Frank makes dumb decisions; Eamon goes on a vision quest with his ex; and I spend some time inexpertly poking around at grief-based decision making.
Remember that these recaps have spoilers for the whole first of Kin. Don't spoil yourself!
See the masterlist here.
Amanda, take us to the cut!
Tumblr media
We open with Eamon at his hotel restaurant, sitting down with the son of his supplier.
Tumblr media
Eamon had a deal with daddy to sell/pay for all those drugs the Kinsellas stole and the son’s come to collect. Eamon asks for an extension, like he’s at a bank and not dealing with an international drug lord. The son and his man bun agree on two weeks, though Eamon will have to pay for it.
Eamon asks Con if he’s heard from ‘Jimmy’s missus’ and reminds him again how important it is they get those drugs back.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Jimmy's missus, at the compound Amanda blow-dries her hair right over the spot where her head hit the car door when Eamon pushed her. She winces. She heads down for coffee and tea with Jimmy and Michael, cause Michael takes his coffee there in the morning. Now I’m picturing the three of them and maybe Allison having breakfast with mini Anna, Jamie and Anthony running around between them. AWWWW.
Tumblr media
Amanda looks thoughtful. She asks them if there’s ever been a rat in the family. Jimmy assures her that Frank’s maintained a tight ship and only the family knows anything of importance. Amanda asks about Dotser, but Jimmy shoots down the idea of him or anyone else talking to Eamon.
Jimmy wants to know why Amanda’s asking. He’s a dick about it.
Tumblr media
Jimmy: Frank runs this family, not you. And I’m not being funny Amanda, but it’s not your place to be talking to Frank about anything. You look after the dealership, and that is fucking it.
Jimmy. Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy. When did you become the poster boy for fragile masculinity? Amanda puts down her mug and leaves. Then Michael’s phone rings. He’s confused to discover it’s Anna, who wants to meet at a cafe to talk. What’s one more ill-advised field trip to see your kid when half of Ireland’s criminals are gunning for you?
Tumblr media
Elsewhere, Eamon arrives at his ex-wife’s fancy house. Instead of heading inside he walks to the garden on the side of the house and starts attacking the shrubbery. His daughter finds him yanking weeds and yelling about gardeners like a demented badger. She’s obviously used to this, or she’s inherited her mother’s zenlike attitude, cause she stands by quietly while he has a mini breakdown.
Tumblr media
Finally his ex-wife comes out. She’s significantly deteriorated since their dinner the night of Jamie’s funeral/Caolan Moore’s assassination. Eamon offers again to get her better medical care, but she wants something else. I will do my best to explain it when we get there. For now, know that Eamon definitely loves her and he pays little attention to his daughter, other than to reach for her briefly after he abandons the garden beds.
Tumblr media
Eamon and his ex-wife head off in his convoy to a mysterious location.
Back at the compound, Eric watches Birdy and Frank talk, cereal bowl in hand, like a child spaced out in front of their Saturday cartoons.
Tumblr media
This is such a strange conversation. In the complicated calculus of who is responsible for Jamie’s death, Eric is definitely part of the equation, albeit not alone. Birdy’s argument to Frank would have him ignore that and the fact that Eric’s recklessness could lead to the downfall of the entire family, because Frank’s first allegiance should be to his son. It’s not hard for Birdy to paint a picture of paternal loyalty, and Frank is very easily manipulated when he feels out of his depth. Birdy also gets Frank to question Amanda’s intel, which is frustrating because Birdy is supposed to be smarter than that. It’s one thing to convince Frank to support Eric because that’s what a proper father would do and it’s another to convince him that Amanda is lying about what the cops have and exaggerating the impact it will have on the family. I’m disappointed, Birdy. I expect better.
Tumblr media
Two more minor things Birdy says here worth noting: that Jimmy and Michael are jumping through hoops for Amanda (nonsense, but there’s a big narrative push to have you believe so) and that Kinsellas don’t hand themselves over to the police (Michael says ‘what?’). Frank also posits Birdy is worried that Amanda's taking over her position as his adviser (also nonsense).
Tumblr media
Birdy comes inside and tells Eric to talk to Frank. So much of Eric’s vulnerability is tied to Frank. One thing these recaps have taught me is that the Kinsellas can be selfish and sometimes loathsome, but they each have these soft underbellies that make them more relatable and their faults more easily forgiven. On paper Eric is a spoiled brat with a bad temper whose thoughtless actions almost destroy his family but in show he’s far more nuanced, and his relationship with Frank is dead center.
Tumblr media
At the salon, Amanda swings by for a pick up. Nikki is snotty to her, because it’s easier to blame the Eric situation on Amanda than Eric and damn if that's not the root of the problem. Amanda is not a Kinsella by blood, Amanda is a woman and the family is patriarchal with a strong vein of misogyny running through it. So much easier to blame an uppity woman than an incompetent man. Nikki hasn’t figured that out yet, but she will.
Tumblr media
Niki leaves Amanda with Kem. He starts fishing and Amanda immediately deduces he’s the rat BECAUSE SHE’S AWESOME. She invites Kem back to the house to fill out the paperwork on a new car and he rushes to follow her.
Tumblr media
Back at the convoy, Eamon’s ex- her name is Angela, I had to look it up- is trying to put her affairs in order. Her will has assets and properties in her name that aren’t hers and she wants it cleaned up before she dies. Eamon asks if she wants them for real, as he’s ready to give her anything at this point, but no, she just doesn’t want to leave a mess behind for her daughters to have to clean up.
Eamon is distraught because he loves her, but instead of feeling bad for him I want to smack him because he either had an affair or left her for another woman and this other woman may also be awesome but he is just an idiot. Not that I’m biased to think Eamon’s an idiot or anything. Add him to the pile.
This does bring up one of my favorite things about the show, which is how often emotions, specifically grief, dictate the actions of the characters. Eamon giving Caolan Moore permission to go after Eric was strategic- he needed to put Frank in his place and reward Moore for his loyalty- but everything he’s done since Jamie was killed has been emotional. How differently would this season have played out if he hadn’t found out Angela was dying right in the middle of it? And he’s not alone. Caolan Moore’s assassination was definitely a grief based decision for Jimmy and Amanda. Michael’s participation was as well, grieving what he saw as his only opportunity to see his daughter. Frank’s decision concerning Eric in this episode is partially about grieving the possible loss of Eric’s freedom. Even the driveby was an emotion-based decision. I like that, just like I like how the Kinsella’s plans are often short term and short sighted. These aren’t perfect people with elaborate, ten-step plans. They make poor decisions when they’re upset and have blindspots. It’s nice.
Angela asks Eamon if he’s given any thought to ‘his question’? Eamon doesn’t want any part of what we’ll find out later is an ayahuasca ceremony. I guess he thought he was with her for emotional support? Angela suggests he ask ‘show me who I’ve become.’ She’s really got his number. He thinks she’s having a go at him but she just wants resolution before she dies. Now I’m wondering if he left her because she understands him too well.
Tumblr media
They finally arrive and Angela asks Eamon to ditch the armed guard. He agrees, but not before giving Con the okay to track Michael’s daughter. Interesting that Con and, by extension, Mini Michael, ask for permission. It’s almost like it’s frowned upon in these circles to get children involved. Isn’t that what started all this?
I should mention that, while I am incredibly critical of Eamon, Ciarán Hinds absolutely kills it in this role. The cast as a whole is really excellent.
Tumblr media
Back in Dublin proper, Michael waits nervously for Anna in a cafe. Prepare yourselves, cause we’re about to get some A-grade dorky dad material here. Anna arrives and smiles shyly but Michael can’t contain himself; this is literally all he’s wanted since getting out of jail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The two sit down, all awkward and fumbly. Anna makes her face blank again, and it occurs to me it’s got to be weird for her, sitting down with this white dude who’s virtually a stranger and who, for all she knows, killed her mother. She’s trying hard to protect herself, I think, in great contrast to Michael, who’s smiling like this is the best day on earth.
Tumblr media
Michael brushes off the cuts on his face as the results of a fall and offers to get Anna something to eat. She’ll take some juice, please, but Michael gently cajoles her into a piece of chocolate cake to go with it. I am horrified. Chocolate cake and orange juice. Together. Whew. He goes up to the counter to order while Anna stays at the table. They are the same type of awkward ducks and it’s uncomfortable but sweet.
Back at the compound, Amanda pulls up with Kem. He is completely oblivious. She takes him outside on the back porch to talk, while Jimmy sits on the couch, looking confused.
Tumblr media
Back at the cafe, Michael gives Anna her cake and juice, and a little gift he picked up for her. Who’s taking this man shopping? Isn’t he supposed to be under armed guard?
Tumblr media
Anyway it’s a bluetooth speaker for her to use to practice her dancing. He briefly tries to explain bluetooth but Anna laughs him off, finally picking up on how much of a dork her dad is.
Tumblr media
She tells him she’ll have to hide it from her grandma, who thinks Michael’s the devil. Apparently Anna’s nan is ‘big into God,’ though Anna’s not really.
Anna: I did pray to mom a long time after she died but not so much anymore.
Oh, Anna. Michael looks completely unequipped for how to deal with this.
Tumblr media
Michael reminds Anna of his plan to go through the courts to see her. She shoots him down, not in a nasty way, just pointing out that all the recent murder and gunplay looks bad for his chances. Michael wants to try anyway, but only if she wants him to. She does. How can he be such a good dad and such a bad dad at the same time?
Tumblr media
Back at the compound, Kem is filling out paperwork while Amanda asks him a series of questions. Does he have a license? Any penalty points? Just who does he talk to, when he’s out being a rat?
Tumblr media
Okay, we need to talk about Amanda. She’s a fucking boss. She’s not a criminal mastermind but she’s smart, and Jamie’s death has jarred her enough that she’s no longer going along with the family hierarchy, therefore more willing and able to see things clearly. Fudge’s death should have been a huge hint that someone was talking in the organization, but Frank wasn’t willing to see it. Jimmy and Birdy go along with Frank, Michael has other things on his mind, and Eric is an idiot. Amanda sees their points of weakness and makes an obvious deduction. Their operation is small, Frank has kept it small on purpose, so the options are light on the ground. Then she comes up with a plan that gives her the advantage- bruiser Jimmy is right inside. She’s amazing.
Tumblr media
Kem tries to get in her face but 1) she wore her ass kicking boots today and they've made her taller 2) Jimmy is RIGHT INSIDE. Kem tries to play dumb so she threatens to get Jimmy. Kem tries to call her bluff but Amanda knocks on the window and drags Jimmy outside. She does a little song and dance about Kem being unable to decide what kind of car to get. Meanwhile, Kem looks ready to shit his pants. It’s good.
Tumblr media
This scene, by the way, only made me love Jimmy more. He spent the whole of it looking like this.
Tumblr media
He’s so clueless.
Jimmy goes back inside and after a tense few seconds, during which Kem looks like a little boy who’s about to be put in timeout and Amanda threatens Kem with Jimmy and Michael, Kem finally admits he talks to Con.
Tumblr media
He admits to setting up Fudge and tells her about the bounty on the Kinsella men. Amanda asks about Anthony and while Kem hasn’t heard anything about him, he tells her about the tail on Anna. Not great!
Tumblr media
And now, at the worst possible moment, I hit the image cap on this post. Part 2 is here!

#cluecrewquestionnaire
1. What is your favorite Nancy Drew game and why? Ghost of Thornton Hall! My Nancy Drew Holy Grail. This game just does everything right. The backstory of the Thornton family is beautiful and terrible and is the backbone of this game. The cast of characters are amazing. Clara, Wade, Harper -- all tragically complex and interesting. I’ll even throw Frat Boy Colton a bone here and say he added something to the story. Harper is straight up modeled after Helena Bohnem Carter in every role ever (though she most closely resembles Bellatrix Lestrange, probably). I absolutely loved hunting through the graveyard and reading old books to find out more about this family, their past, and this bizarre little southern island they live on. (Side note: Do tiny pieces of real estate like this exist off the coast of Georgia? Okay, I have consulted GoogleMaps and it appears they do. Making a note to visit.) The setting is just gorgeous, in the dreary, creepy way you would expect it to be. It reminded me of the abandoned town of Spectre from Big Fish. In fact, the whole thing has an eerie but beautiful Tim Burton-esque vibe to me. You have some amazing spaces to explore, including locked doors and hidden tunnels to boot. Puzzles are on point. Every puzzle in this game is going to help you advance the plot; nothing is sending you on benign errands. This was just seriously an awesome game. It’s the first ND game I’ve played in the Blahunka era, and it really opened a door to some of my other series favorites.
FIN, DDI, SPY, and TRT probably round of my top 5.
2. Have you played all 32 games in the series? If not, which ones haven’t you played? If yes, which one did you play first? I played MHM first, back in the day. Nothing like a little Abby seance to turn you on to a series.
Though I’ve been play since I was a wee baby jr. sleuth, I really rediscovered the series about 3 years ago. Still haven’t hit some of the more clunky sounding ones: White Wolf, Venice, Twister, Ransom, Medallion (started it but I can’t get through this gd game). I also still haven’t played DED or ASH but definitely looking forward to those.
3. What is your favorite line from any character in the series? Because I’m fresh off of SPY, I’m going to say “Be good. Be a little bad.”
4. If you could change the ending to any game, which one would it be (no spoilers, though)? Less jet packs.
5. Which game is your least favorite, and why? I mean, SCK is obviously not the biggest thrill, but damn I really hated fucking Castle Malloy. I thought I was going to love this concept: An upcoming wedding at a dilapidated castle in Ireland, where the groom suddenly goes missing?! SIGN ME UP, I SAY. But I really ate my words. This game is such a tedious slog to get through. Kyler, the bride in question, sits on her ass reading her damn book while you go on a wild goose chase for her husband. (Wild goose chase is hardly even figurative: there’s a damn chase-sheep-give-them-mohawks puzzle for christ sake.) The puzzles are long, and you frequently have to hunt down several missing pieces before you can even start said puzzles. The ending has to be some of the most bizarro, half-baked writing the Nancy Drew series has ever seen. Not to mention, the final sequence was one of the most infuriating things I’ve ever experienced (and I’m not even certain that this is hyperbole). I blew myself up approximately 35 times before - in a fit of rage - I Googled what nuanced methodology I needed to master in order to simply lift a bottle.
6. Which character is your favorite? Why? Oy, probably Dagny. But give me dem Hardy Boys any day. Also, Hilda Swenson. And Renate (CAP). And Viv (DOG). I tend to enjoy the old eccentric ladies.
7. Which character is your least favorite? Why? I’m pretty sure Holt Scotto (DDI) is part of the alt-right, so.
8. How do you feel about the whole Nancy/Ned vs. Nancy/Frank situation? Do you ship her with someone else? Who, and why? Patiently waiting for Nancy and Frank’s love story to arise in MID.
9. Do you have any fun headcanons about any of the games or characters? DAN is based off of The Devils Wears Prada.
10. If you could visit any of the locations of the games, which ones would they be and why?
That absolutely wild underworld set in LIE (someone explain why you build an elaborate set UNDER the stage instead of on it...)
Dry Creek (SHA)
Thornton’s bouge island
All the cool Pacific Northwest locations in DDI -- lighthouse, island, whale cave, etc
Wickford Castle
Royal Palladium
The Train
11. Did you read any of the original Nancy Drew books? If yes, do you like them? If no, would you consider reading one? I have not! But absolutely. Someone recommend the best one to me!
12. What is one thing any good detective can’t live without? Locked shit.
13. Which game had the best soundtrack? I really liked the Irish-y jig music in DDI and HAU.
14. What is one thing you wish HER would’ve included in any of the games (a conversation, interaction, location, feature, etc.)? I want a decent explanation of what happened in past-Germany in CUR. As in, we know who’s responsible for the monster games in present day, but they sure as shit weren’t alive in the olden days.
15. Do you have any ideas for a future game? What is it? Maybe a game base around the witch trials or something?
16. How long does it take you to finish a game from start to finish? Depends! Replays I can usually do in a single sitting, but first plays will take me a few days.
17. Did any of the games scare you? If yes, which ones? If no, why? Hell yeah, MHM scared the shit out of me when I was little. That “I see you” is like straight out of the Chamber of Secrets. Now that I’m an adult, some of my scariest thoughts are routed in my family falling apart. GTH and SAW and SPY definitely get to me in a psychological way. Thanks Blahunka, you twisted human.
18. Why did you join the Nancy Drew fandom here on tumblr? I have no real-life humans to talk these things through with, so thank you for being my internet humans.
19. What is your favorite Nancy Drew joke (from in-game or even floating around the internet)? In game, it’s gotta be the mom jeans shade from SPY. On the internet, all of the “It’s Locked” puns.
20. Who is someone in the clue crew you’ve always wanted to get to know? All of ya!
21. What are three unpopular opinions you hold about the games? 1. CUR is overrated. 2. LIE is underrated.  3. Lukas > Jane Penvellyn any damn day. I love playing Monster and hate playing damn “Go Dig.”
22. Do you have any fun theories about any of the games? I really think that if Blahunka stayed on, we would have gotten a Nancy/Ned break up at some point, and then a Nancy/Frank relationship later on.
23. Who was your favorite animal character featured in the games? Whale friend from DDI.
24. Do other people in your life know about your love for Nancy Drew? Yes! I’m constantly trying to get others to play!
25. How long have you been playing these games? Since about 2001.
26. What’s your favorite in-game backstory/history?
Ballad of Dirk Valentine and Francis Humbert; it’s truly the beating heart of SHA and the greatest love story in the series history.
The random hilarity of all Jake Hurley’s famous friends in TRN (he’s basically Tahani). Like, they seriously worked the Lincoln Assassination into this shit?? It’s amazing.
TRT, but more for the Wickford story than for the Marie Antoinette story. (When I played this as a child, I became obsessed with Marie Antoinette as a result of this game. I was too young to realize how ridiculous it is that Marie Antoinette’s tower was mysteriously in Wisconsin. I’m now too old to see through that ridiculously convenient pothole.)
Mickey Malone, his bombass girlfriend Vivienne, and his cool speakeasy.
Everything about the history of the Thorntons.
27. What is your favorite cut scene? Oh my god that damn junk shop in CRY. WHY WHY WHY.

#cluecrewquestionnaire
I am honoured to have been tagged by @nancydrewcomplex
rules: copy and paste, answer the questions, tag 10 mutuals to do the same!
1. What is your favorite Nancy Drew game and why?
Secret of the Scarlet Hand. If I had started playing later it might have been different and honestly I shouldn’t love it as much as I do based on my other interests but it’s my fave and I’m not giving it up now.
2. Have you played all 32 games in the series? If not, which ones haven’t you played? If yes, which one did you play first?
I have played pretty much everything HER has released for PC - not the Cody Capers. My first game was DOG, it feel like forever ago now.
3. What is your favorite line from any character in the series?
“I am Malika I sell fine things from around the world. The others who sell here, they sell the things which they pry from the muck of their basements.” - Malika DAN   Absolute fave.
4. If you could change the ending to any game, which one would it be (no spoilers, though)?
You mean besides SCK Remastered? Probably ICE, I have never managed to finish it without an obnoxious amount of second chances.
5. Which game is your least favorite, and why?
I mean MED and RAN. RAN because of all the 3rd person play which is miserable. MED because all the characters are terrible, and it’s near impossible to play through and get points at the same time. (I know some people really like Patrick but I’m just not a fan.)
6. Which character is your favorite? Why?
Hmmm maybe Ryan? I’m a mess a little like her. Or Moira, she’s pretty awesome. Charlie perhaps. I’m not very defined here.
7. Which character is your least favorite? Why?
Taylor Sinclair and Abdullah are both creepy jerks.
8. How do you feel about the whole Nancy/Ned vs. Nancy/Frank situation? Do you ship her with someone else? Who, and why?
I am completely pro Ned and Nancy. I appreciate Frank but I started out with the original books so I’m very partial to Ned.
9. Do you have any fun headcanons about any of the games or characters?
Not that come to mind at the moment. Maybe that Nancy really does keep in touch with a lot of people from past games.
10. If you could visit any of the locations of the games, which ones would they be and why?
I want to be back in Paris. I just really really do. I mean I also want to be back in England and Ireland but like; I had dreamed of Paris my entire life and when I got there it did not disappoint what so ever.
11. Did you read any of the original Nancy Drew books? If yes, do you like them? If no, would you consider reading one?
Yes, I read all of them. I have a decent collection that had to be abandoned at my parents house when I moved out. I hope to reclaim it when I move to a bigger place.
12. What is one thing any good detective can’t live without?
An internet connection, for snooping purposes. And library access.
13. Which game had the best soundtrack?
DDI and DAN are my favourites I think. SPY has a nice one recently but really DDI and DAN are fantastic.
14. What is one thing you wish HER would’ve included in any of the games (a conversation, interaction, location, feature, etc)?
Ohhh so much. I guess I wanted some more resolution out of GTH?
15. Do you have any ideas for a future game? What is it?
I think I’d like a game set in Russia. Or another game like CLK set in not the 21st century.
16. How long does it take you to finish a game from start to finish?
The first playthrough can take anywhere from 7ish hours to a few days. After I can get through them in a few hours if I’m playing for speed.
17. Did any of the games scare you? If yes, which ones? If no, why?
The stairs coming down in CLK remains the part that scared me the most for no conceivable reason. I think when I first started playing some parts made me feel uneasy because I was so young and unaccustomed to the games. SAW and GTH of course had a few jump scares.
18. Why did you join the Nancy Drew fandom here on tumblr?
I joined to participate in the Clue Crew 31 day challenge back in 2012. Oh how time flies.
19. What is your favorite Nancy Drew joke (from in-game or even floating around the internet)?
How’s your mom? Is she dead? How did she die? Did it upset you? (Honestly never let her cross over into the Disney universe.)
20. Who is someone in the clue crew you’ve always wanted to get to know?
Everyone really, I’m a little reserved but I’m always excited to meet new people.
21. What are three unpopular opinions you hold about the games?
1. As I said earlier, I don’t like Patrick. 2. I like replaying TMB, not cause I like the characters, just cause I like replaying it. 3. I like Fox and Geese
22. Do you have any fun theories about any of the games?
This may be a headcanon and not a theory but so many people have put trackers on Nancy, for obvious reasons, all they all keep interfering with one another which is why people are still surprised to find out where she is.
23. Who was your favorite animal character featured in the games?
Probably still LouLou. Maybe Uri cause I whine if I don’t have what I want too.
24. Do other people in your life know about your love for Nancy Drew?
Yeah. I’m not subtle about it. I mean I’m sure some people don’t know. Probably more on the people who met me since HER stopped releasing games twice a year side. It’s still a part of my identity though.
25. How long have you been playing these games?
Since forever it seems. I think DDI had just been release when I started playing.
I tag: @hotchkiss-and-tell   @eraofinstability    @i-love-books-because-reasons   and oh dear this is why I need to meet more people in the Clue Crew, please participate if you’d like!
