Oh my god, staff.....
This auraboa issue with the lore being (most likely) unintentionally racist is especially maddening to me, because the concept they seem to want to portray (based purely on the encyclopedia entry) is very similar to an OC I have, and so I can say with experience, it's incredibly difficult to convey! ESPECIALLY when you try to portray it inside a short story where you're cutting lines for word count (their forum reply mentioned they left out some lines to keep it short)
Instead of getting across the concept the encyclopedia entry seems to allude to, the short story just accidentally walks into like 10 racism rakes in a row and its truly agonizing for me to watch, knowing what i assume the actual lore's intent is.
encyclopedia quote: "Older generations of Auraboa existed in a constant state of communion with their fellows. They refer to this connection as The Loop. In this persistent state they perceive time and memory in a non-linear manner; their intertwined considerations for past and present events are such that it became difficult for a dragon outside The Loop to grasp the intentions of these ancient wyrms."
what seems to be the intention is that the auraboa are a hivemind that doesn't experience time the same way other dragons do- they experience past, present, and future all at once and thus cannot communicate well NOT because they have a different language, but because they aren't experiencing TIME ITSELF in the same fashion as the dragons! However, in practice, in the story, the auraboa seem to speak with words in the proper order, just haltingly, since otherwise the story itself couldn't work at all.
another encyclopedia bit: "The newest generation of Auraboa is not linked to The Loop in their waking hours. While they move through the world, they are less directly accessible and read as "silent" to Auraboa who are within the communal state. This disconnection has allowed the young Auraboa to experience time in a linear fashion, and with this new understanding they have begun to form connections with other species of dragon that have never before been possible."
The encyclopedia seems more clear about the Linear Time thing, and that being why they can actually communicate sensibly, but in the act of having a story where the older ones DO communicate with the outside dragons and get a point across, they've kind of not shown the reason why dragons and auraboa COULDNT communicate before! which is! a big thing!
If they'd implemented the auraboa speaking with everything in the wrong order instead of halting single words at a time, i feel like the intention would get across better. As it is, it just smacks them directly into the 'simple native' stereotype with a truly awful tripping into the 'having our kids be taught by outsiders' which is. a really wretched parallel, as many native people have spoken of the unimaginable violence of residential schools.
I feel like the encyclopedia entry Alone isn't nearly as awful (still not great, but not as bad) as the extremely poorly implemented story that managed to ddr dance onto a bunch of horrible tropes.
they were literally so bad at conveying the fact that the auraboa are a hivemind that is unmoored from time, that i see people misinterpreting the lore as auraboa having their own weird language that other dragons can't understand! there was not enough effort put into conveying the ideas they tried to convey, and what WAS put forward was literally chock full of the most unfortunate parallels physically possible.

You are a young parent. Not unusually young, but young nonetheless.
As is your mate. You both have remarked on how it feels as if you'd barely earned the right to wear the clothing that symbolized your adulthood. Simple fare. A bandana, bangles.
But you adored them.
Your first nest is a healthy clutch of three eggs, which you fussed over dutifully as you waited for them to hatch.
You were overwhelmed with pride at the three little hatchlings that broke free: two like him, and one like you. Your heart swelled with a love that you had never felt before.
But far too soon, they were gone. Shipped off to faraway clans before you'd had the time to know any of them. You were not with them for even a full day.
One eventually sent word back that he'd found his place in the world; his charge, and his home soon after. His letter eases the pain of the notices you'd received for the other two; the other one like your mate, and the only one like you.
They'd gone to serve the gods. Not your own, and not even the same ones, but gone nonetheless. Neither had a name to be called even by the time of their true departures, and you bite back the sting of it all.
Time passes, and you receive few notes from the son that still could speak to you. Your mate is uneasy, but he says it is the call to his charge that causes him to pace so. He urges you not to worry.
More time passes, and you have another nest. Your desperate wish is to name them all, but you are not given the chance. Once more, you have a clutch of three, and once more, they are taken from you the moment they hatch.
This time, there is no pause. All your children are sent to serve. This time, it is your own god.
You bite back your sorrow, and try to be proud.
Some days later, one of your clanmates notices your struggle, and tells you of a tradition many have;
to carve an effigy for your departed children, and offer it the kindnesses you wish you could offer to them.
You are doubtful, but you do so nonetheless. It passes the wait between nests to build your shrine, and you put what love into it you can.
You and your mate have many nests, and each and every time you are denied time with your children, you make more offerings to the unnamed. You spend much of your time at the shrine, talking and praying, wishing all of your children well and trying as best you can to remember them by the shards of eggshell you keep.
Your son's letters join the pile soon after he loses his charge.
You stare into the eyes you set in amber and spinel. You were never much of a carver, but you keep trying, refining your effigy with utter dedication.
One more nest, and your mate is sent away as well. His clothing isn't returned to you, and is instead split between the rest of your clan. You are at once distraught and relieved to know one day you will lose his scent and forget him.
You weep in front of your beloved effigy.
You hang your head, and it brushes against your carving.
A marble hand raises, and cradles your cheek.

If you're walking through the plains and the horizon line disappears, the snow and white skies becoming one, then you can walk straight up into the stratosphere - where you'll forever be stuck. To prevent this, listen for your own footsteps, the crunch of the ice beneath feet signifying you're still tied to the ground.

posting on main since i don't care but my mutuals and followers who don't know shit about flight rising might be very confused 💀💀💀
anyways with the new flight rising lore update/revamp, i am very happy and excited about it! but i've seen a lot of complaints from others going like "but my lore!" because their personal lore for their dragon clan goes full in on the colonisation of the beastclans lands/massacring of the beastclans and just overall being dicks on purpose (which was the original canon lore for beastclans and their relationship with dragons).
like i get that the canon has changed making your lair's lore no longer canon compliant, but you have to understand that pretty much every indigenous person who played this game and cared about giving their dragons lore (ME) had to ignore canon. a lot of us ignored canon because playing on the side of colonisers (dragons) was severely uncomfortable given...you know...real life colonisation destroying our cultures, families, languages etc.
the fact that the devs decided "hey actually the playerbase has a point about all of this fucked up colonialism shit in our lore lets fix our mistakes" is like. a fucking win for all of us indigenous people around the world who play this game. we no longer have to pretend the beastclans lore doesn't exist or ignore it because it reminded us too much of the real life things that happened to our own communities. we can play the game and give lore to our own dragon's without having to ignore the canon lore for our own comfort if we decide we want our dragons to interact with the beastclans in positive ways.
if it bothers and annoys you so much to have your own clan's lore not being canon compliant...now you know how it felt for so many indigenous people for most of the decade who played this game. except we had a very good real life reason to be bothered and annoyed by it.

A tunnel system deep beneath the earth once connected the Wispwillow Caverns to the greater Leviathan Chasm. When he was much younger, Aluinn traveled through those tunnels and made his home in the caverns. Now, many years later, those tunnels have long since collapsed and Aluinn is trapped in the caverns alone, cut off from any of his brethren that may remain.
For that reason, Aluinn turns to visitors with curiosity rather than aggression. He doesn’t get many. Most are unable to hold their breath for long and aren’t very good at swimming. Not like him. He can’t show them the treasures deep in the abyss that he has gathered into neat little piles over the year; but he can bring them a trinket from time to time, leaving it on one of the few ledges above the water level.
He enjoys their reactions to his collection. Looks of wonderment as though they are some sort of foreign object. Maybe they don’t have such things above the ceiling. They can’t understand one another, not with words anyway. He does understand when they ask if there’s more down there where even their best divers can’t reach.
He hesitates to show them everything. When he runs out of treasure to show them, will they stop visiting? He doesn’t want to feel those years of loneliness again. Not when he knows that there are others out there, somewhere above him. So he takes it slowly, drawing out a new treasure only once in a while.
It will be a long time before they run out of reasons to visit.

sample concept redraws of Ancient Dragons Ice / Fire / Shadow, + Shade-afflicted versions... + Lore Rewrite
HUGE WRITEUP what I would fix overall lore / storywise / physical traits under the cut
I might also post this in Creative corner for my own lulz, but yeah. I just needed this out of my system lmao. I don't think I will do the other breeds but here's a sample gist of it

Bigg TL;DR : Too much potential wasted
FR places huge emphasis on how the Shade was a huge force to be reckoned with. At the end of the Third Age, the Shade had broken the barrier and clearly destroyed "their best ward", before leaving.
In the Gaoler story, there is a huge emphasis on being "Shade-touched", and the Gaolers make it a serious duty of imprisoning Horrorbeasts, which are massive Shade creatures. There is massive potential of what these beasts could be and from just smelling it, anything from just a drop of Shade to full corruption is taken seriously.
Think of Code Corrupter from Halo : they are to be eradicated as swiftly as possible because they are just that strong.
Bounty Of The Elements Core Rewrite :
What I'm saying is, Bounty of the Elements could be the events of the Lightning Flight screwing a massive leyline that runs through Sornieth, causing a HUGE shockwave that causes the other stories to happen.
This could inadvertently reawaken many elemental energies and lines, but also cause Shade fragments to awaken, and also revive Ancients that have been extinct for a long long time. Some are properly reawakened and normal, but most of them have already fallen prey to the Shade of a war long long ago...and become monstrosities...thus what we have in the Fortress of Ends!
The result, the uncorrupted / still sane Ancients try to find their way to get help / help the poor Modern dragons and Beastclans that are confused by all these Horrorbeasts. The Ancients,Moderns and Beastclans can then share their knowledge to try at the very least contain the Shade's influence.
[ GAOLER ]--------------------------------///
To me, the Gaoler are almost perfect lore and designwise. The only things I would change would just be the stubby wings and fully convert them to muscular arms that are for beating down enemies. They are jailers and they would need a TON of power to muscle rampaging Beasts.
This makes them formidable warriors, but should any ever be corrupted, they are hell to deal with.
[ BANESCALE ]--------------------------------///
Chicken was the literal first thought to mind and that thing hurt to look at. The banescale are mentioned to be huge fans of crafting and armour and this is a huge massive point -- they could have been capable of things that bested the Shade's attacks.
I would make their design to be more stocky akin to a typical Wyvern and have more armour plates all over. They are bulky at the top, but their wings would be leather as the Flamecaller. The armour they make would augment their already ridiculously buff scales and massive spike tail.
The Banescale would have been revived underground by the elemental energies, and would have carried on creating everything, as if time was just frozen from them. Only in the events of Temper, Temper do they realise that they can get out and realise the world has changed drastically, and on learning the situation, work with the Fire Flight's denizens to create fantastic armour with modern materials.
[ Veilspun ]-----------------------------------///
Just bug on the wings??? Come on man. A portal is a powerful device and there would have a been a reason they were locked away. The energies would have awakened them, and there could be a elemental reason; Shadow flight is ironically more susceptible to Shade influence than the rest of the other flights, bar maybe Plague.
The Shadowbinder is a huge huge trickster and the flight reflects that, but even more to the design of everything. Nocturnes are a, personally, imitation game gone wrong. But they have something right and it's them mimicing behaviours when needed.
The Veilspuns could have been utter masters of deceit right down to the design, based off a Leaf Insect and legs of a chameleon. Since they are tiny, they can be in the THOUSANDS, and this force would even make a Shade touched go down for the count. The massive drawback would be that the Shade easily "infects" them by the numbers, leading to whole wars between infected and normal Veils under the darkness of night.
They can teach other dragons the art of stealth, even when they are massive creatures, but requires a lot of magic, and the massive energies would be a huge help...

Born of Creed and Nakia, two dragons who grew up with very little and as such wanted their children to grow up with everything.
These hatchlings were raised in a lavish home hidden within a deep cave, with their father as a constant presence in their life and their hardworking mother visiting as often as she possibly could. Tutors were brought in to make sure they had all the knowledge they would need to head on their own, and their hobbies and passions were - within reason - indulged.
As a result, they had overall quite happy upbringings and were never in want. Their parents were not shy about the hardships the world offered, but they were nonetheless eager to become part of it.
…That being said, the fine foods and fabrics they are used to will likely be quite missed. If you bring one of these lovely kids into your clan, give them time to adjust.
Monique grew up with a love of music, and thanks to her parents' support, became a wonderfully skilled pianist after years with top-class tutors. She wears bells on her horns to always have a bit of music with her.
The last of the triplets, miss Marigold adored plantlife, and wished to be a florist. She didn't need to be sent out anywhere for that - her auntie Marisol Petalblade was delighted to teach her everything she knew about her family's old business.
---------
So two of the three triplets still need homes. They have lore and art, ore is unique, art was only used for this nest of 3. They are only 300g each. Please take one in if you could.

would love to see more lore incorporating the fest familiars in the roles their bios describe for them. shining goblins roam the sunbeam ruins--dragons are on their best behavior when one is near, trying to represent their clans well to the eyes of the lightweaver. runeback slinks skitter underfoot in the observatory and astrolodome, beloved companions to the scholars of the arcane flight. shadow sprites follow the shadowbinder wherever she goes, carrying out her will and relaying it to mortals like angels to the goddess of murk. invaders try to sneak into an important lightning flight industrial site, only to be sent running by the fearsome claws of a livewire grizzly

The Mad King
Ceridwen, fed up from rage, had been cornered by the dragons he considered to be part of his army. Part of his plans for this world. Everyone turned on him, threatening to take his life if he did not quit.
he had no other choice but to scream and yell to show what kind of a king he was. What kind of a God he was. Ceridwen was nothing but scum, dirt under a shoe. Claiming to be a God would not fix his situation, it would only make it far worse. And worse it became, when the heavens opened and when an old friend returned from the sky. An old friend with unpleasant plans for this Mad King.
