The Obrimoi follow the will the Divine. What the Divine even is is left to interpretation. God? The universe's sentience? The primordial forces of Nature? Nevertheless, they feel as if they are its awakened warriors. Their control over Prime, the "magic of magic", and Forces means they quite figuratively control the concept of power. I think it’s a nice demonstration of how socially isolated she is without being too forced and overly cutesy.

Though I’ve seen people say the same thing about Edelgard and her doodling Byleth on her notebooks, so I know that bias gonna bias.

@fountainstranger I’m curious, what do you think constitutes abuse?

Consistent mistreatment, be it verbal, emotional, or physical. I’d also tack on “with the intent to harm and control”, but I realize that sometimes people can hurt others without realizing they’re doing it, and that would count as a form of abuse.

Though typically I don’t really consider someone an “abuser” unless they’re doing it intentionally with the desire to control the other person utterly in a situation where’s it’s unwanted.

Generally speaking, if you point out someone’s bad behavior toward you and they go “Oh, I didn’t realize I was doing that” and then proceed to work on fixing the problem, they’re not an abuser in my eyes (doesn’t mean their partner has to stay with them through the healing process if they feel hurt enough, but I’m not going to condemn someone for making mistakes if they want to get better).

Granted, that’s a super generic answer. The real world is messy and complicated and I don’t think anything falls into black & white brackets when it comes to behavior. An unhealthy relationship doesn’t necessarily mean it’s an abusive one, in other words.

But in the case of the example that prompted this question: I don’t consider Christian Grey an abuser, because whenever he messes up, Anna calls him out on it & he tries to fix it.

Also there’s the fact that he’s in that weird grey area of being used to having partners who were cool with the 24/7 D/s relationship, which is why he keeps making mistakes with Anna: He doesn’t know how to interact with other people in a personal relationship outside of the D/s scene & doesn’t quite put together that Anna doesn’t want another person controlling every aspect of her life 24/7 inside and outside of the bedroom (that’s super simplifying it).

So like 90% of his “Abuse” to Anna (the keeping tabs on her all the time, making decisions for her, etc.) is really just some serious miscommunication issues and misunderstandings of expectations out of their relationship. (Aka, Anna wants to date him but has no real concept of what a 24/7 D/s relationship is like & Christian’s kinda bad with social cues so he doesn’t realize he’s doing something wrong).

Long story short, he’s a very broken man who learns how to get better and deal with other people normally through a loving relationship and lots of therapy--therefore, not an abuser.

(And people severely exaggerate even the more “Abusive” things he did to Anna. Like. He never raped her. He never ignored a safe word. The worst thing that happened was the end of book one, which was a huge misunderstanding & communication failure, not an intentional act of harm.)
