I've got to go to a formal dinner tonight.

I had to learn how to tie a bowtie (physically painful), but now I can do heehee haha dw references which is fun

But also it's a properly formal 3 course meal at a golf club and I have to do all the social mannerisms and follow the etiquette otherwise I get fined so uh... I hope I remember everything lmao

museums should label 19th-century women’s clothing primarily by formality (except in the case of garments with specific purposes, eg. “cycling costume” or “nightgown”), not by the 10,000 different terms they might be called at the time

my reasoning is that the current hodgepodge of terms, while technically accurate to the period:

1. reinforces the myth that middle- or upper-class women used to always change their dresses many times a day No Matter What, rather than what seems to me the primary-source-supported reality- that they changed situationally, as necessary

2. promotes unnecessary disconnect between the past and the present. we have varying degrees of clothing formality today, just without specific terms for each one. they had garments that could serve for multiple purposes and be dressed up or down with accessories back then. but because we don’t talk about an “afternoon dress” vs. a “ball gown” and they didn’t talk about the dress code for a party being “nice casual” vs. “dressy.” there’s this false idea that our systems of clothing changes/formality are Totally Different. which is really not the case, I think

3. even they couldn’t agree on what to call each individual outfit! I’ve seen fashion plates in magazines where the textual description and the label on the image give the same dress different names

he could not care less for food besides the nutrients he needs tbh he's the type of guy that goes "what a waste of time..." even if you serve him like a 5 course gourmet meal. With that being said though, he does need to eat so in my mind he just forces Gortash's kitchen staff to meal prep for exactly the amount he needs 2 maintain his physique

q 1. thank you for reminding me that "design some fix-it au outfits" has been on my to draw list for like 3 months and 2. just like. every outfit in star wars ever. she's absolutely trying various naboo fashions first (she wants to match) and then various other fancy Coruscanti fashions loll -- and in her defence, neither her nor Anakin knows what casual fashion he likes beforehand! so its not selfish to try get him matching her! ...except he pretty quickly realises that yeahhhh i think im just gonna get some normal tshirts and jackets this isn't my style

Much has been made in the real world of the difference between "Ask" vs. "Guess" cultures and the possible clashes that can occur when someone from an Ask culture makes a request a Guesser finds to be overstepping, or conversely, when someone from a Guess culture expects someone from an Ask culture to pick up on what is subtle and unsaid.

It has been my experience that in online social media spaces there is a similar phenomenon. Some people, when talking about their favorite characters, ships, or works, implicitly wish to convert others over to their way of thinking and their preferences, and interpret others as doing the same. Others prefer to express their feelings about these things purely for the sake of personal expression, with no expectation of agreement. People of the former group, perhaps because they perceive these statements as potential opening arguments, often value positivity and may elide or simply not discuss that which they do not enjoy. People of the latter, however, might choose to engage in open criticism as well, as part of the full spectrum of expression. This can lead to conflicts not unlike that of Ask vs. Guess cultures, in which one group's statements, despite a neutral intent, are interpreted as demands by the other.

I propose these two mindsets - argument vs. expression - and their contrast within fandom spaces, be referred to as "Ask" vs. "Kvetch", which, in this essay, I will

it's like. everything happens so much. it's all happening right now but at the same time nothing is happening whatsoever. it's a liminal space of an existence. it's slowly crushing me under the weight but when I look up there's nothing actually bearing down on me. there shouldn't be any weight. something is wrong but nothing has happened.
