something I think about a lot is how when you’re finally in a healthy relationship all the love can feel scary because it’s different. Being seen is scary when you’ve been neglected and ignored, when it’s been ingrained in your brain that you have to fight to be engaged with, to be listened to, to feel love from another person

"oi, i'll have you know, " he begins & sounds appropriately indignant. sadly, the effect is lost a little; there's a little bit of something stuck at his the back of his throat, & indignation doesn’t sound so hot when it’s accompanied by a strangled tone. embarrassing: not enough to be deeply embarrassing, but enough to make tanaka clear his throat & readjust his stance. third time’s the charm.

’ i'll have you know that I operate at a minimum of 75% confidence at all times of the year. ‘ that leaves 25% of his confidence unaccounted for. & he reserves that 25% for self-doubt that he’s ready to challenge to physical combat. tanaka is a 24/6 kind of guy. he operates full force until day six. at that point, bed sounds like an amazing idea. even then, he sleeps at full force & snores at full force.

it’s been a while ( years ? ) since he’s seen kira; it’s been years, & she’s asking him to organize a social gathering — she needs to find someone, she said. & that’s all the detail that tanaka has earned.

which is fine. tanaka has never been the type to know everything.

& he trusts kira.

tanaka keeps talking with his hands; he strokes his chin with his forefinger. it's been a day or so since he last shaved, & he's feeling the consequences against his skin.

immediately, a habitual hand raises in apology for his language. it’s a stupid thing, but there are some people out there that he tries not to swear around. tanaka is seldom successful.

‘ things aren't half as fun if there's not a bit of a bumpy ride to go with it. we can make bets on which of the neighbors is gonna come up with the best rumor about you."

he doesn't mind a bit of mystery. he's not entirely sure that kira hadn't hinted what her rationale was already, but - he's a philosophical kind of guy (his friends & wife may disagree ), a creative guy that gets in the zone (sort of ). so he may have missed the point.

to this agreement, he’ll toast. even if
