bitching about narrative design in bioware games part 2

to summarize part 1 quickly, i bitched a bit about how bioware wrote some characters and designed some parts of the narrative of baldurs gate 1 and 2. they killed the only black woman in the og bg games for a (supposedly) white man’s pain (minsc) and then offered a replacement in the form of a white woman (aerie).

while complaining about bg1 and 2 could stand all on its own, the reason i wanted to talk about those things in particular is to highlight the way bioware writes and designs characters and stories in their later titles, like mass effect, but especially dragon age. i do particularly pick on the writing of david gaider and lukas kristjanson and a little bit on patrick weekes, but this is not meant to be a personal jab at any of them or say anything about their character or beliefs.

overall i think a lot of the way bioware frames certain characters and manipulates the dialogue of certain characters is really more questionable than allowing for actual critical thought. the best examples of my issues with this are cullen, aveline, fenris, dorian and sera. also a special shout out for jacob from mass effect. you might notice that ive now named four characters that lukas kristjanson wrote for; minsc, aveline, sera, and jacob. that doesnt mean i dislike how he writes all of his characters: i actually really enjoy carver and joker, for example.

my issues with the way he wrote these characters directly relates to over-utilization of stereotypes, writing dialogue that sometimes sounds bizarrely out of character, and combine both of those with poor levels of representation in all of the bioware titles.

aveline, while a very enjoyable character (imho) says things that i think directly contrast how she actually thinks and feels in game. she makes many degrading and insulting comments directly at isabela (who was confirmed as a black woman by gaider) about her sexuality and i feel like its honestly really uncharacteristic of her, given how often she finds herself agreeing with a pro-mage hawke throughout the story and how strongly she feels about the real protection and care of people. this is an issue for multiple reasons:

1. isabela is only one of two black female companions in the dragon age franchise, and she does not even have black facial features (she looks pretty european to me, leaving vivienne as the only black woman in the series with black facial features). contrast that to 12 white female companions throughout dragon age including DLCS, and three white female temporary companions (not including merrill, as i already counted her).

2. isabela is expressive and open with her sexuality in a way only one other female character is, and morrigan isn’t even near to the degree that isabela is. also, isabela is bisexual, and the narrative plays hard against characters that are bisexual/pansexual and simultaneously considered slutty (they have one each game! zevran, isabela, iron bull).

3. isabela is a swashbuckler/rogue with a spotty history irt loyalty, again reinforcing stereotypes of characters that are bisexual or bipoc being untrustworthy or of dubious morality.

and none of this would have mattered if there were more black and bisexual/pansexual characters in the series. weekes’ comment about not wanting to make solas black and bisexual because he didnt want to fall into a stereotype? null and void if there were more black and/or bisexual characters in the franchise. representation matters.

i love fenris too! and you know what i hate? people writing GOTCHA dialogue that doesnt even fit a character just to push a devils advocate agenda.

the conversation in question is between fenris and anders in act 2.

fenris: there, your magic would be a mark of honor. apprenticed to the right magister, you would do well.

anders: so they all do those things?

fenris: just the ones who don’t complain about how powerless and persecuted they are.

“just the ones who dont complain about how powerless and persecuted they are” shut the fuck up. why would this come out of fenris’ mouth at all, ever? bruh gaider wrote his storyline, he knows this doesnt make sense. he has to. doesnt he???

and i feel like da2, but especially inquisition, does this a lot. they shove a lot of dialogue into the game that kinda gives you a GOTCHA sorta vibe, like they’re just tryin to snag the inquisitor on bs.

this happens with dorian in inquisition too. if you play a dalish elf inquisitor, theres an entire conversation with him about slavery in tevinter. while the game spends the entire narrative effectively shitting on a dalish inquisitor for being proud of their dalish culture and heritage, dorian is often praised by the narrative for being nationalistic and proud of tevinter’s culture and history. in the conversation, it feels more like dorian is talking at the inquisitor rather than having a thoughtful and engaging discussion about slavery and why his perspective on it might be different. i dont have screencaps off hand atm, but it’s right there in the game, if you have a copy, go play it.

in contrast, in dragon age origins, you can have a conversation with leliana with a dalish warden wherein she says some hurtful things about dalish elves, things that are typically associated with real life stereotypes about indigenous people, like them being “savage” “brutish” or “lazy”. and by the end of the conversation, no matter what you say or do, she apologizes. she says she was wrong to say those things, and she’s sorry, and she won’t do it again. that’s an effective dialogue about serious issues in a video game!!!! not whatever bullshit that dorian conversation was.

and last but not least: sera and jacob. sera is a great character, and yet, she is the only companion who you can actively dismiss / rudely ask her to leave the inquisition throughout the entire game and in every single conversation. the narrative frames this 20 year old (she is YOUNG!!!! who ISNT annoying sometimes when they’re young???) lesbian as an irritant, and most people walk away from inquisition disliking sera. consistently ppl shit on sera throughout the game, and the narrative itself likes to make her an enemy to the inquisitor, make it feel/seem wrong that she constantly questions authority, when so many other characters are shown in a positive light for doing and saying the exact same shit she does. this is part of a larger issue bioware has in general with writing elven women in dragon age (see also the framing of merrill in da2 and velanna in the expansion for origins, awakening).

do i even have to start on jacob? black man with a heart of gold and a deadbeat, creepy, abusive father? then he “cheats” on shepard in mass effect 3 and the narrative gives you the option to punch him? he didn’t even know if shepard was going to be released from custody!!! he knew the reapers were coming and he didn’t know if he would ever see her again!!!! of course some people will feel his actions were a betrayal, but its all ignorant of the circumstances he was in. its not no two years thought dead thing that everyone is okay with excusing (virmire romance), but it’s certainly fucking close.

tl;dr: i hate how bioware frames characters and designs narratives sometimes. if someone ever reads this that works at bioware: please hire more bipoc and queer designers.

da:i definitely has like, the most nostalgia value to me? but the characters from da2 are my absolute favorite so i’d have to say a tie between those two

02) How did you discover Dragon Age?

soph ( @triforks ) introduced me to da:i back in like 2016 or smth i think? and i thought was cool but kinda forgot abt it again, but then early last year another friend introduced me to the tavern songs and i started listening to the soundtrack too and i knew I Had To Own It Immediately

03) How many times you’ve played the games?

ah shit ... well first of all ive never actually completed da:o, bc i didnt get properly into until after i hurt my wrist, so it’s been like impossible to actually do so. i think ive completed da2 three times (julian, agnes, flynn), i would’ve played it more if i hadnt hurt my wrist toward the end of agnes’s playthrough. and then da:i ive played .. i think 7 times all the way through? (elinor, athel x4, althea, axeline)

04) Favourite race to play as?

06) Do you play through the games differently or do you make the same decisions each time?

i usually change dialogue options based on their personality, and a few major decisions have varied, but i do have a tendency to make characters who would make very similar decisions

07) Go-to adventuring group?

again, i dont have much experience with da:o, but for da2 i usually go varric, carver (or fenris, if carver is dead), and anders, and for da:i i either do dorian, cassandra, vivienne; dorian, blackwall, sera; or iron bull, varric, solas

08) Which of your characters did you put the most thought into?

i wanna say a tie between agnes, athel, and axel. theyre all characters i put a stupid amount of thought into considering i rarely actually talk about them

09) Favourite romance?

tie between isabela and dorian. sera wouldve been up there as well if lukas nastyman hadnt fucked it up

10) Have you read any of the comics/books?

descent and trespasser both have very special places in my heart. honestly i think it’s like 60% bc of the soundtrack but beyond that i absolutely love the interactions between the inquisitor and their companions

lukas nastyman and everything he has touched (except carver which im still amazed he wrote)

14) Orlais or Ferelden?

they both kinda suck politically most of the time but aesthetically i would say orlais

my hawkes are in different universes, and so are my inquisitors for the most part, altho i do imagine if he hadnt been the inquisitor athel still wouldve joined the inquisition so he’s there in all of them

17) What did you name your pets? (mabari, summoned animals, mounts, etc)

literally all i remember is elvira cousland named her mabari dane

18) Have you installed any mods?

i would if i knew how but i dont and i have yet to find a guide that doesnt confuse the shit out of me fdjfgkfdjk

19) Did your Warden want to become a Grey Warden?

elvira wasnt entirely against the idea, but when it came down to it i think things like having kids and growing old were a part of her plan that she wasnt expecting to have taken away from her. i wouldnt say she regrets becoming a warden, bc the work she’s doing is important, but i do think she wishes she’d been able to make more of an informed choice, or really have a choice at all

nah i just put whatever has the highest armor rating on them and call it quits

22) If your character(s) could go back in time to change one thing, what would they change?

elvira would take her parents far, far away where howe couldnt find them

agnes would’ve never left her mom’s side when a serial killer was on the loose

flynn would’ve kept carver far away from the deep roads

elinor would have run away with sera before corypheus showed up in haven

axel would have never said a word to solas after he taught her to seal rifts

and athel wouldnt change anything, i think. redcliffe showed him the importance of details and of people, and i think no matter how much he regrets something or wishes it hadn’t happened, he knows that things might have turned out much worse if it hadn’t

23) Do you have any headcanons about your character(s) that go against canon?

idk if it really goes against canon specifically, but a big part of agnes’s character arc (in my head, at least) was how terrified she was of becoming an abomination. a lot of what she did was motivated by the need to stay in control of herself and the fear of turning into the very thing that was used as an excuse to oppress her people

24) Who did you leave in the Fade?

the warden, usually. my hawkes all mean the world to me i cant leave them behind jkdfjgkd

Okay binch I'm here I told you I was gonna do it after my class but then after my class I got a sandwich and that distracted me then I was watching avatar the last airbender but then you texted me about your new inquisitor and that reminded me so here binch have some questions to answer 1-3, 31-40, 43,44, 98-101

1. How did you get into Dragon Age?I came across adoribull fanart and then got into those fanfics,,, then became obsessed with Dorian Pavus,,, then I read more about the lore of the series and got super into it,,, and then I finally bought Dragon Age: Inquisition and played it for the first time :’) in like 2015 and then like a year and a half later bought Origins and DA2

2. Have you finished all three games?lol nO not yet – i finished my first Inquisition playthrough, and I finished DA2, but i’m still working on Origins (slowly) – also it should be noted that out of my 21 inquisitors, only 1 has beat corypheus; out of my 4 hawkes, only one has finished the game; and i haven’t finished any of my 7 wardens playthroughs

 3. How long did it take you to finish the series?Well I’m still not done with that (whoops) so. to finish DAI, it took me over 120hrs of gameplay (i cant remember the exact hours but i’ll update this later); to finish DA2 i had like almost 60 hours? I think?? and i think currently i have like. 10-15 hours saved on Origins. i’ll update this later when i actually check the times

31. DLC for the first 2 games: All of it, some of it, or none of it?None of it yet sadly bc i’m broke af and i haven’t bought any of the DLC’s yet for any of the games

37. Bloodmagic: yes or no?i’ve always been on the fence about it (actually: thats a lie when i first got in the fandom it was Bad and a No) but like. i get why most people in Thedas are against it but like. it could have so many uses – like tracking people in DA2 okay like u know how much easier it would be to solve crimes in Thedas if the asshats there KNEW HOW DNA WORKED ?? also. like what if blood magic could be used to heal people?? oh theres some nasty bacteria in ur blood? lemme get rid of that for u

38. Funniest moment in the games?god there were so many iconic funny moments in DA2 i cant even list them all – especially for my purple hawkes. but tbh the moment that made me fucking cry from laughing was when that Avaar dude threw a goat. A fuckign GOAT. at my fortress like,, my dude. U JUST THREW A GOAT AT MY FUCKING CASTLe and teh graphics like glitched so it looked so weird and i CRIED

39. Creepiest moment in the games?so there were a few tbh okay so like in DAI (since i played that one first) - when haven falls and then i’m like in the tunnels and then a snowstorm all alone it was creepy and scary but more in a how-would-i-react-if-that-happened-irl kinda scary. then the entire Fallow Mire is creepy and i hate it bc again: i can handle horror and scary things but what truly scares me is like viral epidemics bc that Can Actually Happen and its scary and guess what? theres a virus / bacteria thing in the fallow mire if u read the little notes and lore there u pick up on it and its Scary. alsO in inquisition: that fucking haunted mansion in the Emerald Graves like – its cool and all (architecture adn teh dRAGON thING IN THERE) but. zombies and the lights that flicker on and off and everything about it is just. weird. NOW IN DA2: fucking bartrand’s mansion i hAtE it its also like a haunted house kinda creepy thing. alSo being in the deep roads – i hate it. IN ORIGINS: b r o o d m o t h e r s

40. A moment/action you regret in-game?everytime i’ve said something mean to someone in-game. also garrett hawke regrets killing merrill’s entire clan during act 3,, whoops. sometimes marian hawke regrets being aggressive but mEh. oh yeah also in my canon world state (using my original character in each game) i highly regret not making alistair king and leaving him a Soft Boy bc guess what: That means he stays with the wardens and his gf and then i have to decide between letting Alistair or my Garrett Hawke live in Inquisition :’)

Favorite romance overall so far?u know what? fucK this question. i love,, all of them so much (except for eggman’s romance) but uh. i’ll pick one from each oKay?? compromise. so in DAI: CASSANDRA bc,, i love my wife. in DA2: Fenris. in DAO: hnggg its dIFfiCult but. i think alistair,,,bc hes a giant dork and i loVe. wow u notice something here? they’re all warriors. i have a gotdam type

44. One romance you just can’t stand/doesn’t make sense/etc?hmm after much consideration: eggman’s romance. sorry solavellan shippers, i just. i dont like him. and i dont like the relationship he and my inquisitor that romanced him had bc like. she coulda done better and not had him FUCK UP HER FACE but hey whateveR. ALSO: i dont mind when other people do but i cannot romance merrill. idk why, i havent like. put a lotta introspection into that thought but like. the thought of it makes me uncomfy

98. If you could be any non-Human DA species, which and why?dwarf bc i’m already short enough lmao HoWeVeR i’m not a fan of Orzammar’s class system so i would wanna be a Kal-Sharok dwarf or a surface dwarf

99. Where would you live (Fereldan, Orlais, Free Marches etc?)if i was a dwarf like in the last question: Kal-Sharok. otherwise,, i feel like Fereldan might be okay bc Dogs and its also Cold(er). altho Anderfels would be cool too bc its out of the way and no one would bother me ALSO fuKCing EMPRISE DU LION (Orlais) BC !!! 100. Circle, Templar, Chantry, Guard, Seeker, Inquisition, or none?hmm. i would be agent of inquisition bc. fuck the chantry (and templar, seeker, and circle are parts of the chantry or results of it) and i mean the guard would be okay (i’m assuming its meaning the Kirkwall city guard) bc I Love and Would Die For Aveline but. kirkwall is a burning trash heap

i had a littel thought that if Lyssia has shards of the elven gods, then he’d have access to like....bits of old magic. 

and as we’ve seen, shards can have ALOT of information, so i guess Lyssia has access to ALOT of old magic.

and one of those old magic that would be interesting is SHAPE SHIFTING, because honsetly i dont know what that’s ot more wide spread but you knwo, what ever

so Lyssia starts practicing it during his time with the Hawke family, turning into the family mabari and birds at first. i decided the first time he uses it in battle is during the undead fight in the bone pit. an undead is coming up behind Varric and Lyssia just acts and turns into a wolf to bite its fucking head off. so Garret, Varric, Anders and Fenris find out first

then later, Lyssia shows the rest of the gang and family and you know its neat as fuck just dont do it in town, obviously. also i’d like to note Lyssia’s go to form is a wolf *finger guns

so of course he’ll use this during the invasition of  kirkwall and then the rebellion, probably using it to get Anders out of town becAUSE WHOW ANTS T FUCK WITH A WOLF HAHAHHA

any way, so skip a few years during the whole conclave. makes sense they’d send their two members of the clan that can turn into inconspicuous animals and the conclave blows up, Lyssia and Lucius (as well as 3 others) survive,Lucius having not been in the conclave building directly when it exploded

i keep trying to figure out when Lyssia would turn into a wolf, and it’d be something she does if she or some one she cares about is in EXTREME danger. and so the only time i think that happens in the first part of the game is during the fallow mire bog thing. because the uh...high lander guy is just really fucking tough

so as the rain beats down and the party is bruised up, battered and tired from the hordes, i think Lyssia would just shift without thinking. taking form of a large wolf and just mauling the abSO LUTE SHIT OUT OF EVERYTHING THAT ISNT INQUISITION HAHAH

imagine Solas’s fucking face as he just sees a large dark furred wolf coming to his aid, i bet he’d be real fucking confused

i mean he’s already concerned/insulted because of her fen’harel vallislin and how the anchor is on two hands aND THE SHARDS IMBEDED IN HER SKIN, but this would just confuse the absolute shit out of him

i mean, varric already knows, so yea it’d probably be The iron bull, solas and varric who see it and its like WHAT

if not the break up and the post ‘he’s gone’ feelings, it’s incredibly...lonely without Solas around

i never realized like, if you fancy a person in that game, and then suddenly they aren’t there?

i mean...there is a sense of loss any way, if not for Solas. all of my friends are scattered to the winds

and honestly, i knew this feeling with Hawke, and ik inda fear it now if i ever play dragon age origins? to know where they end up, to fall in love with them myself??? just...not a great feeling

...it really made Lyssia lonely in a way i didn’t know she was gonna have to expeirence, and it kinda kills me inside in an amazingly painfulway

like...the Warden’s group doesn’t stay together, Hawke’s group doesn’t stay together, and the inquisition gets all broken up and im like..???

and it’s...funny, from Lyssia’s point of view. because during the fifth blight, she ‘lost’ her family to them, then joined Hawke’s. then during the rebellion, she lost Hawke’s family, and now jus with the inqusition being finished...she lost that too

Lyssia isn’t abel to keep familes..thought i haven’t finished it, and im...cautiously hopeful that maybe they’ll stay...but i know they dont

so it just makes me sad, again.

it makes me sad because itsj ust...how the world goes, and it peturbs me to no end. 

....Varric giving Lyssia a title and a HOME at Kirkwall though, it really...really made me tear up. because Lyssia never HAD one, she just stayed with Hawke (or Fenris, or Varric, or Anders, or Merrill. she was the homeless hobo child who bummed off every one)

and the idea she could go back...but, surpRISE, no one is there...i mean, Carver and Bethany are probaby their repairing with their mother and such

and i mean..Varric is there too, and probably Fenris. probably Fenris, because Garret isn’t the Hawke who goes to Wesshaupt, that’s Marian. so of COURSE Isabella goes with her

Merrill probably lives in the ailienge too? maybe??? i dont know the female or Sebastian well enough, so they probably are chill too?

and then Lyssia’s dalish clans (Lavellathan and the one her Granny A runs) ruling a town???? that is connected to Kirkwall??? it just..makes me wanna cry its so great

i wonder where Lucy and Dick go after inquisition? i mean, the warden and her bae...i guess to fix up the wardens. Morrigan leaving with Kieren is kinda sad, but she’s chosen to be apart from us and that sucks because half brother but you know, whatever

people keep asking Lyssia about Solas too, and it just...its disheartening in a way i didn’t really want to expeirence. its why maybe ive also been dragging my feet with inquisition. i mean, the ‘heart break’ Solas gives us isn’t really that bad. not any more painful then seeing Hawke’s mother die or shit like that. you cry a little bit and you get over because fiction

but its....funny, this time round. it was funny seeing his little slip ups, knowing his quirks, knowing where i wanted to stand in the conversations we had. it was funny knowing where it was going and then DOING it again, the break up sceen

and itjust...kinda triggered something that recently happened, which is also hilarious. you have a new appreceiation for ficational heart break when youve expierneced it first hadn. its also funny because its so fucking similiar that i could bust a gut

please just give us the option to like, save him and let him be happy with his romanced person.please. not in a ‘let them both die’ kinda way but in a ‘he doesnt destroy the world and he’s redeemed and he and his inquisitor gf go and live on a farm together’
