hi ! i was wondering if you know of swedish words/phrases for lgbt people? i am not sure which words are outdated/offensive?

HBTQ+ is our verson of LGBT+. And the most common way to refer to us as far as I have seen is “hbtq-personer” (or “hbt-personer”, even though that gives off some really… iffy vibes to me since it erases a lot of people in the community by just leaving it at three letters).

Personally I like “queer-personer” and “queera människor” as well, but they’re not quite as commonly used.

Basically every word used to refer to us is in some way or has in some way in the past been offensive though, just like in English (aside from queer, since we only borrowed that after it had been reclaimed), so there’s probably always going to be someone who takes issue with the words you use no matter which ones you use.

I’ll give you a list of the words I see used more often though:

Of course that list doesn’t cover all identities, but it’s something at least.

You can, but you don’t always have to put -person after the identity when you’re talking about only one person though, just like in English:“Hen är en ickebinär person” - “(Singular)They are a nonbinary person”“Hen är ickebinär” - “(Singular)They are nonbinary”

And it’s possible to just replace “personer” with “människor” in any of these. “Personer” means “people” and “människor” means “humans”, but they’re used pretty much interchangeably in Swedish.

You can see that I’m also aggressively putting a space or a hyphen between the identity and -person or -personer here, even though dictionaries may disagree with me. We don’t usually join up adjectives with -person/er in Swedish and it has some pretty gross (especially transphobic) implications to join them up like that here when it’s not done elsewhere.

*Arguably not reclaimed as well in Swedish as they are in English, so possibly more similar to faggot/faggots in some situations.

**Arguably more similar to dyke/dykes, but more commonly used in a non-derogatory way in Swedish than they are in Englsih.
