nothing has ever hit me more than seeing that single word at the end of a series of unfortunate events
how else can I describe discovering the series on my school's shelves, reading the books through the next grade because i didn't know i could go to the local library?
seeing those little inscriptions and dedications and messages that fascinated me- made me feel like i was peering through a peephole on a secret otherwise unknown
a bit of mystery never uncovered, this beatrice, this long lost love that our author has endeared us to and that we've been to endeared to him as a result
because, my little brain thought, who even reads those dedications at the beginning? i always skipped through them, nothing more than a couple of words usually
and yet it always felt like fate the first time i caught my eyes on those looping words, the spark in my brain when i realized there was a story there
a secret, i realized, a tragic mystery waiting to be read between lines
i showed it to my teachers, these clever little dedications, was excited to go to the library to check out more
i gushed over them to my siblings, scavenged for clues of this love story told through ironic for's and hypotheticals that get too detailed too quickly
running to the library and pulling the previously read books off the shelves to see the other for beatrice's that i had never paid any mind, even going as far as memorizing some of them because i liked the way the words jerked and softened and exhaled and never inhaled
how could i describe the culmination of that, of those for's, of those single sentences that ran through my head again and again
of the circular narrative clever as it is bittersweet, of the almost wrongness of seeing such a word in a place such as this- of the icy tragedy that that word implies
all of it turned on its head, for just one single word? how could i describe that?
