Buy a Pumpkin Feed a Child

For the past six years, Buy a Pumpkin Feed a Child has hosted a pumpkin patch in order to raise money to feed children in the Gainesville area and Guatemala. The pumpkin patch is located at the Gainesville Church of God at 7003 NW 39th Ave., Gainesville, FL, 32606 and is open from Oct. 4 through Oct. 31.

Buy a Pumpkin Feed a Child partners with Flames of fire Ministry, Food4Kids, and The Salvation Army in order to reach as many kids as possible. They also have numerous sponsors such as Publix, Chick-Fil-A, Gainesville Health and Fitness, and many more. All information about sponsors and where the money goes can be found on the Buy a Pumpkin Feed a Child website, which is also where they accept donations for those who are unable to make it to the pumpkin patch but still want to donate. For those who are able to go to the pumpkin patch, any of the volunteers are happy to explain the mission and answer any questions people have.

The pumpkin patch is free to enter but they encourage visitors to buy a pumpkin or other refreshments. All proceeds from the sales go directly to the children in order to buy them hot meals. They strive to feed more than 500 children at eight different feeding centers using donations.

“The pumpkin bread is such a great choice, and definitely my favorite thing here” said one of the volunteers, Ally Barnhouse. Since the donations are based on sales they try to have a fan favorite for people to talk about, and that favorite for many visitors, and volunteers, is the pumpkin bread.

There are many photo opportunities while there, such as a giant chair and a talking “Tow Mater” from the movie “Cars”. As well as a blow-up slide, bounce house, and a tractor pull for children. No matter what age, there are plenty of things to see and experience at the pumpkin patch.

They have a tent set up at the event which is where visitors will exit, as well as make any purchases. They sell all refreshments and snacks here, as well as this is where visitors will purchase their pumpkins.

Ashley Taylor, 21, a chemical engineering student at the University of Florida, Kate Balthaser, 21, an applied physiology and kinesiology major at the University of Florida, Alli Trebbi, 19, a business major at the University of Florida, and Savannah James, 18, an economics major at the University of Florida, pose for a picture in front of a mini pumpkin patch set up for toddlers, called the “Youngn’s Pick’n Patch”.

Alli sets up to take a cute photo of Ashley and Kate while they pose against the wall of the “Youngn’s Pick’n Patch” in order to get an orange background to show off the fall colors. This is just one of many photo opportunities at the pumpkin patch.

This is one example of the small pumpkins someone could find, as well as a sample of the big pumpkins that they display for people to look through. Many people at the pumpkin patch enjoy looking through the vast amount of pumpkins in order to find the perfect one to take home. In the background you can see a tractor and “Tow Mater” from Cars, which are popular photo spots.

Buy a Pumpkin Feed a Child

Buy a Pumpkin Feed a Child is an annual event hosted by Gainesville Church of God. The pumpkin patch located at 7003 NW 39th Ave., Gainesville, FL 32606, raises money to feed children in the Gainesville area and in Guatemala from October 4 through October 31.

At the patch, there is plethora of activities for visitors to take part in. There are pumpkins available for purchase, as well as gourds and homemade pumpkin bread. Visitors can also take part in the different photo stops, and there is a train ride and bounce house for children.

There is no fee to enter the patch, but every visitor is encouraged to purchase something to support the mission of feeding children. The goal of the event is to raise enough money to feed over 500 children.

“My favorite part about working this event is meeting a ton of new people,” said event volunteer, Ally Barnhill. The event is completely run by unpaid volunteers, who all believe in the mission to feed as many children as possible.

Hilda Ng, a junior tourism major at the University of Florida, and Sarah Staskowski, a senior telecommunication major at the University of Florida, walk into the pumpkin patch to explore. Friday, October 30, 2020 is their first time at this pumpkin patch.

Hilda and Sarah walk through each row of pumpkins, inspecting each one. They are searching for the perfect pumpkin to carve later on.

Hilda and Sarah find a pumpkin they both love. They hold it up together for a photo.

There are four different photo stops at the pumpkin patch. While exploring the patch, Hilda and Sarah take part in one of the set photo stops.

Gainesville Church of God set up a tent as the exit from the patch. Under the tent, visitors can pay for their pumpkins, browse baked goods and hear more about the church’s mission.

A butterfly found resting on one of the pumpkins that is for sale. Gainesville Church of God partnered with the Salvation Army, Food4Kids and Guatemalan Missions in this event; all of the proceeds from pumpkin sales goes to these organizations to help feed kids.
