♡. ABOUT .ᐟ
the daughter of a well-known newsreader, journalism runs in allegra’s family. she grew up on sydney’s north shore. she’s the youngest of two girls. her older sister, verity, was six years her senior, but despite the years between them, they were best friends and did everything together. their parents called them the two musketeers, which became a running joke in their family because at times it felt as though they were attached at the hip.
five years ago was when allegra’s world came crashing down after the untimely death of verity from an accidental overdose. losing her sister felt like she lost a part of herself that she’ll never get back.
after verity’s death, she needed a change of scenery and made the move from sydney to brisbane for a fresh start. she’s been living in the city for over four years and absolutely loves it.
she is a journalist, primarily focusing on politics. her work is mostly in television but she also dabbles in print when the opportunity is there.
allegra is a lesbian — something that took years for her to figure out. she spent a long time trying to convince herself that the right man would come along and that she was just ‘picky’, but one day it just dawned on her that she’d never find the right man because in fact, what she wanted was women and to be loved by her dream woman.
as far as her personality goes, she’s the kind of person who has the kind of warmth and charisma that doesn’t come easily to everyone, she is able to make anyone feel like they’re the only person in the world when she’s talking to them. you could definitely say she’s an extrovert — she loves being around people from all walks of life and really getting to know them.
visuals : musings : wanted connections.

We have a returning citizen in Mount Phoenix:
Lucas Walker, who is known by no other name;                                      a 30 year old son of Lei King.                                         He is a fighter at The Pits                                  and bartender at Visión / Ilusión.
FC NAME/GROUP: Christian Yu/DPR/Ex C-Clown CHARACTER NAME: Lucas Walker AGE/DATE OF BIRTH: September 6, 1990 | 30 PLACE OF BIRTH: Central, Hong Kong | Sydney, Australia OCCUPATION: Fighter at the Pits and Bartender at Vision HEIGHT: 5'10" | 176cm WEIGHT: 165lbs | 75kg DEFINING FEATURES: He has a large amount of tattoos, his most prominent being his full sleeve on his left arm that leads to a floral piece on his chest and shoulder blade. On the inside of his left bicep is the date 12.12.19 which is the birthdate of his daughter Jasmine. He has a few other small tattoos scattered on his body. His nose is pierced, on the left side and his septum is pierced along with doubles in both his ears.
PERSONALITY: Lucas was exposed to the worst things the world has to offer a child at a very young age. Leaving him a tough exterior and an injured idea of self-worth. He was forced to grow up very quickly and at a young age. Outside he portrays this “pissed at the world”, harsh, unpredictable, man but inside he’s just scarred and bruised from so many things that are always out of his control. His skin is tough but his heart is big, warm, and ready to love. The birth of his daughter kinda snapped him into reality and removed him from the land of self pity and dropped him right in the middle of acting like a responsible adult. He’s still getting the hang of this whole fatherhood thing, trying to act less reckless and uncaged so that he can be there for his daughter.
HISTORY: tw: death, loss, gang violence, gun violence, physical violence, torture, ptsd
Lucas was born in Hong Kong on September 6th, 1990. He was born to a very young woman who was barely 18 and couldn’t even afford to take care of herself let alone a baby. She left him outside of her local hospital after having him secretly at home. There was nothing the staff could do except take him in, take care of him and hand him over to the local orphanage. At six months old, he was adopted by a sweet couple from Sydney, Australia. He lived with them happily until he was eight years old when they were killed in a home invasion, the suspects left him there terrified at what he had witnessed. He was found by his aunt, his mother’s sister and the police left him in her care. Once everything was said and done, Lucas’ aunt was given custody of him and the perpetrators were still at large after almost a year of searching. After this, his aunt became his whole world, a young woman at only 24 now taking care of a nine year old boy full time. The two were each other’s rocks during the entire healing process.
Both sets of his grandparents tried suing for custody of him but, in the end his aunt won out as the best place for him. She didn’t live far from his parents so he didn’t have to change schools or make new friends. His aunt’s friends always questioned why she was willing to take in a primary school aged kid at such a young age but, the two were best friends even before his parent’s murder. She couldn’t imagine anyone else taking care of him or raising him.
As a child, Lucas was quiet and usually kept to himself. Not because he didn’t want to interact with other kids but, because he just enjoyed his alone time. He was quiet in school but insanely smart, yet when teachers tried putting him into more advanced classes he chose to stay with his same age classmates. His aunt Gabrielle tried to get him into sports, music, and the arts but no. He just liked to read on his own, spending time off in his own little world or playing outside in the woods behind their house by himself. Around his tenth birthday things began to go downhill for the dynamic duo. Gabrielle lost her job as the lead secretary of a law firm and she ended up stuck waiting tables at a local 24 hour diner - from 7pm to 4am.
Gabrielle did everything she could to give Lucas the life she felt he deserved after that, doing they best they could when they had to downsize into a small one bedroom apartment and her working more hours to keep food on the table. It was so bad, Gabrielle ended up having to take on a second job after her parents refused to help her saying “she got herself into his mess on her own, she had to get her and the kid out of this mess on her own.” Lucas felt awful watching his aunt struggle to make ends meet and he tried everything he could to help out at home. He kept the apartment clean, babysat their neighbor’s kids, walked dogs, mowed yards, sold newspapers, and just about anything he could as an eleven year old in the rough part of the city they lived in. The only thing he didn’t do was fall in with the gangs that promised to help him and his aunt if he joined up with them…
Eventually by the time was 13 almost 14, doing odd jobs just wasn’t cutting it anymore for him and his aunt wouldn’t let him get a “real job” because it was her responsibility has his guardian to provide for him or whatever. He didn’t understand the pride she held about the subject so he went around her. He started selling homework and test answers at school, stealing petty things and selling them to his classmates for inflated prices, and he even learned how to give stick n poke tattoos for a price. Lucas wasn’t a stupid kid, he just worked with the resources he had. This line of work he got himself into at school eventually lead to him making friends with a couple other kids that belonged to the gang that lived on his block.
Inevitably those friendships lead to him joining the ranks and getting him paid to do things that would probably lead to his aunt murdering him on sight for being an utter imbecile. He was smart though and knew how to get out of things that would get him in over his head. However, by the time he was 16 this group of “friends” are what caused him to discover one of his divine abilities. At first Lucas always just thought that his high pain tolerance was just a cool thing about him, he could get hit and keep going, stub his toe and not feel a thing, get shoulder checked and only stumble without wincing. It wasn’t until he got stabbed for the first time at 16 that he had a realization that what he could do wasn’t normal. He got stitched up and moved right along his day and the gang leader decided to use this to his advantage. Lucas was recruited to the fighting ring, when he got found out.
He didn’t want to do it but, he’d make good money at the underground fighting ring. So he fought, and he did a damn good job at it too. Especially once he found out he could make his opponents keel over in pain that wasn’t physical. Lucas had no idea how he did it or why he could do it but, at this point he was just doing whatever her could to win because if he won he got paid and if he lost he’d get killed. Since beating him up wasn’t an option. Gabrielle was already suspicious of him when he started getting piercings, dying his hair, then getting tattoos but the real cherry on top of her anger was him pulling up to their apartment complex on a second hand motorcycle her got from a fight bet. His aunt went off on him that night and he had no other choice but to come clean about everything. However, he wasn’t the only one with a bombshell to drop…
His aunt admitted that she found his original adoption records when he was younger after the transfer of guardianship was complete and she needed all his documents. Apparently his birth-mother never listed a father on his birth certificate but his birth-father did contact his parents after his adoption. Leaving a letter to give to him when he either turned 18 or “got in trouble”. She’d read it out of curiosity and refused to believe the contents. It sounded crazy to her that his father was some old Chinese god, she only assumed he was on drugs or something and was delusional. Until Lucas admitted to what he could do and even showed her… Those things are just not possible for anyone human.
There was a return address in the letter, somewhere he’d never heard of but he responded anyways. Hoping to get some more guidance or some closure perhaps. Surprisingly, Lucas didn’t freak out with the news. Perhaps in the back of his mind he always had an inkling that he wasn’t the same as everyone else… like he was inhuman. He never received another letter from Lei King but he did receive a map that had a hand drawn picture of an island off the coast of Korea circled. He put the map away and chose to come back to it later.
When he was 18 his world crumbled underneath his feet. The underground fighting ring he was now the star of got busted by the police. The silver lining was that he was found not guilty by the jury of his peers. His defense attorney did well at convincing them that he only did what he did to survive and that he was coerced at a young age by the gang leader. He and many other members of the gang that were manipulated as kids came forward against the leader, landing him in prison for the rest of his life. Lucas didn’t know what to do with this new found freedom other than finish school. Once he was fully graduated he tried to figure out what to do with his life, he didn’t have many skills outside of crime and he honestly hadn’t planned on either being alive by now or not in prison himself. His aunt tried to convince him to go to university but he didn’t want to do that, there wasn’t anything he wanted to get a degree in that he cared about.
Instead, he chose to leave. He left Sydney and went as far as he could, landing him in New York City. He had enough money put away to get him a small apartment there to set up as a “base camp” of sorts. From there he began traveling all over the world, picking up photography and a pursuit of knowledge. On his travels, he met an interesting group of people. Shady people that reminded him very much of his old gang. They were in Scotland when he met them, and they were nice enough so he traveled with them a bit. One night, the “leader” got a bit too drunk and began to spill some secrets, secrets that Lucas just couldn’t stomach.
You see, this group he stumbled upon were the same people that murdered his adopted parents right in from of his eyes as a child - and they were proud of it. When the cocky leader spilled the beans while intoxicated, Lucas steeled himself and held onto that information like a lifeline. He integrated himself with these people slowly, over a few weeks while back packing around Scotland with them. Eventually, Lucas found the perfect time to strike. One night when they were all camping together, Lucas waited until they were all asleep and started them all awake with a gunshot. Over the entirety of the night, Lucas tied up the group, beat them all with only his bare fists, and tortured all of them mentally until they admitted to remembering him as a child. When all was said and done, the group was left mentally broken, unable to properly function as people. He cleaned up his things, called for help, told the police of their crimes and got the hell out of there and out of the country.
After that he went back to New York, cleaned out his apartment and headed back to Sydney. The things he’d just done changed him inside, a dark spot on his soul seemed to only grow bigger. He never told his aunt what he did, or why he was so broken when he finally came home. He hadn’t been home in almost six years and now here he was showing up on her door step, a broken and traumatized man. While he was away his aunt got married to a beautiful and kind woman named Erica. Lucas apologized immensely for missing the wedding, he was in Mongolia at the time he got the invitation and couldn’t get out of the mountains until after the event passed. They were understanding and easily took him into their arms and comforted him.
Now, at 27 years old with no idea what else to do with his life. He started going to therapy but even he didn’t know where to begin to heal from everything that had been nonstop traumatizing in his life. He started working as a bartender to pass the time and make a bit of extra cash, working as a photographer, and doing legal fights here and there. He’s eased into a pretty calm time of his life where he’d finally started to heal. Then to top it all off, he fell in love. It was a passionate and all encompassing kind of love, the kind where they were actively planning their future together, ready to be in it for the long hall. Less than a year together and they were married, it was the happiest they had ever been in their lives. She was an old friend of his and they’d known each other their wholes lives practically. Once they got closer while working together and the bar they both bartended at, that was it. They were head over heels.
They were happily married for almost a year when his wife got pregnant with their little girl in 2018. It was a huge accomplishment for the two of them, going from being the worst examples of humanity as teens to happily married and starting a family together. They were beyond overjoyed and Luke was more than excited to become a father. However, nothing could have prepared them for the struggle his wife would go through while pregnant. Her health continued to decline as the pregnancy went on but, she refused to end it and save herself. Luke begged her to not go through with it, the doctor’s told her she probably wouldn’t survive but she decided to chose her baby over her own health. In the end, on December 12th, 2019 Jasmine Elaina Walker was born, perfectly healthy. As happy as Luke was to hold his baby girl in his arms, nothing prepared him for holding his wife’s hand as she slowly passed away…
It was hard. Hard to act like he wasn’t dying inside everyday because his wife was gone, all while taking care of a newborn and trying not to have a full on breakdown. His aunts were his backbone the first few months as he got back on his feet. His wife’s family was practically nonexistent, leaving him and his aunts alone to raise a baby on their own.
Luke has a very high pain tolerance but the pain of losing his wife was not something his divine abilities could help him with this time…
The first six months of Jasmine’s life was rough, Luke was dealing with both the grief of losing the love of his life while doing everything he could to be there for Jasmine. On the days he just didn’t want to get out of bed, when all he wanted to do was cry, Jasmine was there - always needing her father so he had no time to wallow in his misery. He had to get up, had to get dressed, had to shower, had to function. He had to go to work to keep her fed, to keep buying her diapers, to keep a roof over her head, and to keep her happy and healthy. Of course, his aunts helped out all they could and he couldn’t possibly explain how thankful he is for them. After Jasmine’s first birthday he was cleaning house and he found the map given to him by Lei King when he was a teenager, he did some research and found nothing until he one day got a letter from Hera who was supposedly on the City Council of this island he was skeptical even existed. She spoke to him and told him all about the city just for gods and other demigods like him.
Suddenly, Lucas go this overwhelming desire to go there. He needed to get away from Sydney, he needed to get them out of the house that he bought with his late wife. They needed a fresh start and this island seemed like a good place to give that a try. His aunts were worried about him leaving but, understood why he needed to go and why he needed to get away. They were worried about him obviously but, he got child care set up with Hera before he even moved. Having a barely one year old and becoming a full time single parent scared him but, he knew he could do it. By moving to this new city and finding new people to surround himself with, new places to explore, and new experiences to be had with his little girl. He was both terrified and excited to see what was in store with them on this fancy hidden island.
PANTHEON: Chinese CHILD OF:  Lei King POWERS: He has extremely high pain tolerance and can induce psychogenic pain in others. He also has the ability to call upon the sound of thunder at will. STRENGTHS: Intelligent, Adventurous, Creative WEAKNESSES: Impulsive, Stubborn, Reckless

Same place, different mind
Tumblr media
“How to see interesting things in a familiar environment?”
The question came up in my mind one day in July 2014. At that time, I had just come back to Singapore from a memorable trip to Japan. I was so excited about the streets, cuisine, nature and people there that I took a countless number of photos. After that, the lack of newness in my surrounding environment in Singapore life made me feel bored quickly and not interested in taking photos. I longed for another trip to Japan soon. Does this mean I am interested in taking photos only when travelling? I didn’t want to take Yes for an answer. To me, photography is a creative process and by doing it, I feel energised and free. I want to keep doing it everywhere I go.
When I was still wondering about the answer, an idea appeared. My office was at Bugis and I usually rushed to and from work. Rarely did I walk around the neighboorhood to enjoy it. That thought triggered my curiosity to see what it looked like in the weekend.
That weekend, Bugis was still filled with people going for delicious and affordable food choices. However, I felt different because I wasn’t looking for a place to eat. Seeing queues didn’t tire me anymore. In fact, I enjoyed observing different people in the queue of a particular well-known hot pot restaurant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back alleys always interest me in a strange way. They look raw, industrial and certainly are a genuine part of the city.
Without being aware, I walked over to the Clarke Quay, a popular nightlife spot for tourist and locals. It was around 4 pm so most of the places are not yet open.
Tumblr media
I saw this man standing on a table to clean the ceiling of his restaurant. The ice bucket was being used as cleaning water bucket, which was quite hilarious. He must be preparing the place for the evening opening.
Looking at these photos I took, it is clear that I was looking for novelty. What are the people in my photos were doing? and most importantly what did I have in mind when taking them?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have written before that I liked to capture moments, but maybe I was just trying to capture my mind.
One of my friends said to me that she once reviewed all the photos she liked on Instagram, just to understand who she really was and what she was truly passionate about. That intrigued me greatly. The decision to like a photo happens in a split-second. There is no logical reason, only impulse coming from our desire and nature. It is quite similar to taking a photo. A button is pressed, the shutter closes and opens. The moment is captured as quickly as our thought. What went through my mind at those moments? What was I really looking for?
Tumblr media
I took this photo when visiting some friends at Bedok. An uncle and his grandkid were hanging out at the playground next to my friends’ house. I can see joy and adventure in this photo: the joy of the uncle and the kid’s adventure to explore the playground.
It was true that my job back then was quite stressful, so following a daily routine didn’t allow me to “see” joy and adventure in life. It’s not about the place, but the mind. Travelling is simply an easy way to immerse my mind in newness and it’s not the only way to do that.
You may ask “How can I see interesting things in the city I am living in?” The following tips have worked me and they may work for you to varying degrees:
1. Do something unusual, something not in your routine. For me, it was revisiting familiar places at different time. I really like my neighboorhood at midnight, which I discovered only when I started running in the evening. My current city, Sydney, is lovely and quiet at Christmas time when many people travel elsewhere for holidays.
2. Take a different route to the office or back home. By taking a new turn, a new street, I discovered new restaurants and shops around my office. This is a small tweak but can give a surprising result.
3. Travel with new people to see the world through their perspectives. As seeing the world is not just through your own eyes, having a fresh perspective really helps you feel a different vibe of the place. I enjoyed Singapore also when being a tour guide for my family or friends when they visited me. Seeing how excited they were made me feel the same.
Tumblr media
I hope will you find interesting things around you, even when you are not actively travelling. Remember that it’s not about the location, it’s about your mind. If you are curious about the world, you will learn new things.
That’s it for today. Thank you for reading this through. I will catch you next time.
Cheers,
Ryan

The Perfect Instagram Photo: 7 Benefits Of Hiring An Event Photographer For Your Business
Event photography is a special art all its own, and it can do wonders for you when it comes to promoting your business. When you hire an event photographer, you can expect an artistic capture of your event and you will be able to use the photos for promotional purposes for years to come.
Everyone likes to see people having a good time, and through photography, you can tell a story about your staff, your business, your values and your company’s personality that simply cannot be told effectively in any other way.
A Professional Event Photographer Is Vital
Since everyone now has cameras on our phones today, it may be tempting to photograph your business’ even yourself, but this is a bad idea. No matter how skilled you are at taking photos yourself, in the end, these photos will look unprofessional and will be disappointing.
When you leave event photography to a professional, you can focus on running your event and on having a good time, all the while knowing that your photos are taken care of by someone who knows what he or she is doing.
At your event, your photographer only has one single task upon which to focus. He or she does not have to worry about mingling with guests or ensuring that everything is running smoothly. Instead, an event photographer can spend the entire event doing what he or she was hired to do and this will get results.
Furthermore, an event photographer is a professional and has a great deal of experience with his or her craft. A professional photographer has excellent equipment that far exceeds the options available on a personal digital camera or a cellular phone camera. He or she has developed a creative eye in this profession and is adept with timing and composition.
A professional photographer also knows how to work a room without being intrusive to guests.
Professional photos are not complete with the click of a shutter, either. After the event, an event photographer will also spend a great deal of time reviewing the photos and making them the best they can be. He or she likely has experience with programs like Lightroom or Photoshop and can correct things in the final copies such as reducing shadow and increasing light.
Professional Event Photography Can Help Your Business
There are so many ways that professional event photography can help your business. Initially, event photography seems important because it will allow you, your colleagues, and your customers to remember an exciting and important event. However, the uses go far beyond that; these photos can be used for a wide variety of marketing purposes that will help your business grow.
If you are using your professional event photos in advertising materials or on your website, they will be a big part of the first impression that you are presenting to the world. First impressions – personal or professional – are so important; research shows that a first impression is made and solidified in as little as seven seconds.
The image that you present to potential customers in those seven seconds can be the difference between a major account and no business at all.
Using professional photos in your marketing materials helps businesses to engage with customers. These customers may be people you have not yet met face to face and will encourage them to take the next steps towards a business relationship with your company.
Remember, the better the image, the better the reaction of the potential customer. Good professional event photos will get you more exposure and more business. An eye-catching image, when used properly, will help your customers to retain your company’s message and will inspire them to take action.
Studies show that people remember up to 65% of visual content they see after three days, whereas they only remember 10% of what they saw in text only.
Things to Consider When Hiring an Event Photographer
When you hire an event photographer to cover your event, you want to find someone who is experienced and confident for the best results. If you hire an inexperienced photographer, you might as well be photographing your event yourself.
A professional photographer will have good references and reviews and a portfolio for you to view to see samples of his or her work.  By looking at a photographer’s past work, you can see if his or her photos are what you seek. Different photographers have different styles, so you may want to meet with several before making a final decision.
Newer photographers may seem promising and may do a great job, but so many things happen so quickly at events that someone less experienced could quickly become overwhelmed. You may save money by hiring someone with less experience, but remember, you often get what you pay for.
Ways to Help Your Event Photographer
When you hire an event photographer, there are many things you can do to help him or her to successfully capture your event. This person is a professional and will be prepared, but every event is different, and the photographer is perhaps a stranger to your company and may need guidance regarding subjects, flow, and event organization.
Upon arrival, it will be quite helpful if someone can show the photographer around and introduce him or her to the important people attending. Providing the event photographer with a schedule of events is essential so he or she can be ready to shoot the most important or exciting moments.
Be sure to let the photographer know what areas are open to him or her and what spaces are off limits. If you have ideas for great angles or shots, feel free to suggest them, but also remember that you hired a professional for a reason. The photographer will likely have some questions for you, so be sure to make time to answer them before the event begins.
Surely, the event photographer will want to photograph prominent guests and speakers during the events. Unique happenings such as ribbon cuttings or awards presentations are also important subjects. A good event photographer will also photograph social encounters, such as greetings and conversations, and details like food and decorations.
It’s the goal of the photographer to capture the overall feel and experience of the event and that is something that takes years of practice. Although you could take some pictures of the event independently, a professional event photographer will go above and beyond to create a visual record and memory of your event, and that is valuable beyond words.
Hire a Professional Event Photographer
Clearly, hiring a professional event photographer is a smart thing to do and will be great for your business, so don’t delay and hire one for your next business event.
If you need an experienced and professional event photographer in Sydney, please contact us at Sorted Media now; we are happy to answer any questions you may have, and we look forward to being a part of your next event.

It was such a pleasure to get to spend the day with Sydney and Eli and their amazingly kind and hospitable family. It was a tad cooler today than we had anticipated but the sky was clear and the weather was comfortable in the sun. The father of the groom stayed up all night smoking the meat and the food was amazing. I had the opportunity to work with some new vendors today which is always exciting. I have tagged them below. Hope you all had an amazing day as well. Days like today remind me why I love this job so much. Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Q&A with Filmmaker Hersh Nat
ConnectHER communications specialist Elaine Robbins spoke with Hersh Nat, whose film Besharam was shortlisted as a finalist for Best Film Production at the ConnectHER Film Festival 2020. Hersh is a Punjabi artist who grew up in West Sydney, Australia.
Tumblr media
1. Why did you choose to make a film about cultural notions of beauty and how Indian women view themselves?
I chose to film young South Asian girls in Western Sydney because I wanted to cultivate a piece of art that told me that I was good enough. I have always struggled to find representation outside of Bollywood cinema, so naturally the story aligns with many communities globally. There is a strange rite of passage that takes place beneath Eurocentric influence and cultural assimilation in us first-generation kids. We end up formulating something new that is generally built from discrimination and self-hatred. In my experience, it took years of growth for me to stop feeling ashamed and become content in between my two worlds.
As a director, I wanted to educate others about the lives we as South Asian women endure and the misconceptions we face by presenting elegance within the vulnerability of our shame. I wanted to motivate other people of color to feel liberated in their experiences enough to reformulate them and be proud of them. Hence the name of my film, Besharam (Hindi for “shameless”), which refers to the act of loving oneself despite the conditioning that tells us we shouldn't.
2. Your film overlays images of young South Asian women posing in natural settings with the voices of young women talking about their experiences. Did you start with the conversation and the soundtrack, or did you start with the film shoot?
Initially I went into this film with ideas for the visual components. I wanted to capture the girls in an unfiltered way, which is why the shots are candid and raw. After the film shoots, I asked women in a focus group to elaborate on ideas of what beauty really is. “What makes an Indian girl beautiful?” was one of the questions I asked. This stirred a plethora of powerful emotions, as you hear in the voiceovers layered throughout the film. The women recounted discrimination and expressed their anger about how whitewashing had adversely impacted their self-image as young women of color. One woman said, “If you have dark skin with white features, you’re pretty. If you have dark skin with any type of ethnic features, you’re unattractive.”
Tumblr media
3. It’s not surprising that your film was a finalist in the Best Film Production category. It is so visually striking, with women in colorful saris and flowing fabrics. How did you create your film's visual vocabulary?
I prioritized aesthetics and the physical presentation of the models. I knew initially that I wanted to have cultural garments that were playful and bright, because it looks beautiful on screen and indicates a discussion about cultural identity. This was translated by the girls “modernizing” their outfits. In the field shoot, I asked the girls to wear sneakers beneath their lehengas to display their child-like innocence and flourishing identities.
I only have basic experience with editing in post-production, so I poured most of my energy into filming the shots well. I was constantly trying to meet the girls at eye level so that the effect was intimate and real. All of the shoot locations were natural and calm, to express acceptance and comfort.
4. Was it a challenge to organize the location shoots?
Once I had a rough idea of the film I wanted to create, I reached out on Instagram to as many young South Asian girls as I could. The response was a little discouraging at first. But I stayed diligent and managed to have 20 girls confirm, which worked out perfectly. Thankfully all of the girls got themselves to the shoot location. My job was to grab a tripod, dupattas [head coverings] from my mum's closet, and several props like plastic dolls, hair brushes, and little mirrors.
Before the shoot, I worked on a mood board to map out the aesthetics, and I made directorial notes of different scenes I was going to try to create. The notes were really just starting points for me to map out how I was going to film things. It became apparent in the field that everything would not be how I had envisioned it. I felt more comfortable during the second shoot, as I had more experience. The whole experience was definitely a challenge, but I'm glad I took it.
5. Where have you shared your film?
I was fortunate to have my film screened in Western Sydney at a local youth center. This was such an achievement for me, because I feel that there is a lack of opportunities for creative young people in Western Sydney. Standing at the screening among a diverse group of people enjoying South Asian art and food, I felt like I had achieved something great! There was representation, which is vital to break stereotypes and encourage understanding of such communities.
6. What are your plans for the future? Any more film plans?
Besharam contained a multitude of ideas that I can see myself elaborating on in future projects, not just on film but in photography and writing. I also want to do social research to underpin the art so that I can make it more factual and powerful. I am particularly interested in capturing the stories of the younger generations of the cultural diaspora in countries like Australia. I think some of the most fascinating stories come from taboo topics, the things that people would rather sweep below the rug and leave unsaid.
Tumblr media
“I think some of the most fascinating stories come from taboo topics, the things that people would rather sweep below the rug and leave unsaid.”
7. You offered a brief vision in your film about what it would be like if women could accept themselves completely. Can you share it with our readers?
One woman in our focus groups said, “In the moments when you can feel completely comfortable in yourself, they’re so sacred and so rare. If we were to experience that more often, even all the time, things would just be a lot easier.” This discussion came about after I asked the question “How can we see our imperfections as beauty marks?” This is such a simple yet important idea that suggests a reality devoid of self-hatred, discrimination, and societal pressure. Although we may never attain complete self-acceptance, I believe it is important to speculate on what we all truly desire. It is only after we unpack the pain of our experiences that we can find solutions, which are grounded by acceptance and mutual understanding.

Brook Andrew knew he wanted to be an artist when he was growing up, which is good because he is one. ‘I don’t really get asked that question much,’ he admits. ‘But when I was a kid I thought about what I wanted to do, and I suppose it was just make art, and now I do.’ It’s perhaps the most uncomplicated way I’ve heard someone with such an impressive career distil their passion. His frankness is refreshing.
With a Bachelor’s degree and a Masters in Fine Art, Brook has woven an impressive academic career through his artistic achievements, fitting them in somewhere between a photography laureate position in Paris and a survey show at the NGV! He holds a staggering number of professorships and research assistant roles at universities in Australia and the UK. He’s exhibited in the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, held fellowships with the Smithsonian in the USA and a residency in Berlin. In March he received an Australia Council Award for Visual Arts. He is, without a doubt, the most astonishingly accomplished person I have ever interviewed.
But now, as the Artistic Director of the Sydney Biennale, he can weave all these tendrils of his professional life together. Drawing on his Wiradjuri heritage and the focus on community he has centred his artistic practice around, Brook developed an entirely First Nations-led program for the country’s oldest and largest Biennale.
The 2020 Sydney Biennale is titled NIRIN, the Wiradjuri word for ‘edge’. As an artist, Brook has focussed on bringing stories from the margins into the centre, and challenging the traditions that excluded them for so long. As an artistic director, he has the ability to program artists whose art asks the same questions. His groundbreaking program is dominated by First Nations artists from Australia, Alaska, South Africa, New Zealand, and Haiti, as well as artists representing the diasporas from China and Africa. Kylie Kwong even made an appearance discussing the cultural impact of food!
Brook was appointed in 2018, giving him two years to conceptualise, prepare and program over 700 artworks by 101 artists and collectives from around the world. For the Biennale’s 22nd iteration, the free contemporary program occupies five venues across Sydney, including Cockatoo Island – where the photographs accompanying this story were taken. Just 10 days after it opened, the monumental program was forced to close, as the world locked down due to the health crisis. But earlier this week the program re-opened, with extended dates.
It’s Brook’s job to let loose hundreds of potential concepts, and then string them all back together again, catching artists and their work in his net of ideas. It’s a difficult role to pin down, and one that means something different to every person who holds it. But Brook’s programming carries the same intention as his art: to challenge the idea of Australia we have been taught for so long, by bringing new stories out of the shadows.
The most important verb in my get-your-dream-job vocabulary is…
Self-determination. It’s a pretty powerful verb. It’s about the need to control our lives and have control of our lives, and the pathway you set for yourself. Especially being Indigenous and especially being in a place which denies a lot of the history of its own country – there are real issues at stake within the concept of ‘self-determination’ that many Australians don’t understand, especially with what’s going on at the moment with Indigenous Lives Matter. I think for people to determine their own lives is the most powerful thing that anyone can do.
I came to this role by…
Following the pathway of hidden shadowed areas, in histories that often ignore a balanced view of the world.
The process of curating this exhibition has been…
A state of constant engagement and excitement, but also problem solving.
The most rewarding part of my job is…
Seeing the accomplishment in the artists and communities, and also the self of achievement within the staff and volunteers through the development and creation of the works, and the public who finally see parts of themselves in the work, or a sense of new journeys.
Over the years I have learned…
That we constantly learn and change our mind. In our personal lives it’s okay to feel that something is shifting or that you’ve got a different opinion. I think people can get stuck with a particular rhetoric or a particular value through their childhood, or through insecurity or something else, but it’s important not to be stuck.
NIRIN is a groundbreaking program for the Sydney Biennale. As the artistic director, how is this Sydney Biennale different and what are you trying to achieve?
NIRIN is First Nations and artist-led, the trajectory is to present urgent issues of the state of where we are today in the world that is often pushed to the side, these include issues of First Nations sovereignty, working together, healing and the environment.
Biennales are the legacy of the great European exhibitions that exhibited the wealth and collections of often colonised lands, the effects of this heartache is often ignored and the inter-generational cycles of pain, trauma and poverty are greatly misunderstood by the status-quo. Therefore, to create a biennale that focuses on shadow areas due to ignorance is removing the blindspot and opening dialogue for healing and working together.
How does your work as an artist inform your work as an artistic director?
I was really surprised when I got the call to submit a proposal. But the first thing I thought about was how to empower the artists to do their work, especially when the issues [they create around] are often glanced over. Whether you’re a queer artist or an Indigenous artist, I think there needs to be a level playing field on a broader scale of how we look at the visual arts, especially when it’s usually from the European perspective of what art is. I think that because within my practice I work with communities and engage in collaboration and interdisciplinary works constantly, that really gave me those skills to support the artists in the Biennale as much as possible.
I am interested in the power of objects, and this includes historical objects that were often stolen from people’s traditional homelands and placed within international museums. These collections become places of power and voyeurism, and objects often become empty. Empowering these objects through community and ceremony, or alerting the status-quo to these histories is a passion of mine, and there is a sense of this within NIRIN.
The 2020 Sydney Biennale will run until late September. For information on programming, venues, events and a complete list of artists, visit their website here.

Arplis - News: 2020-04-26
As we all watch this incredible scenario play out, it’s safe to say that no one can really believe the far-reaching effects of this pandemic. Loss of life and livelihood are everywhere. It’s up to all of us to help stop the spread of Covid-19. People like those in the healthcare industry are doing an incredible job, putting themselves in harm’s way to help others. My sister is one of those. She is an endoscopy specialist in London usually away from the main part of the hospital. But she is now working as a general nurse with people suffering with Covid-19. Her courage – and the courage of others like her – deserves all of our respect… and whatever we can all do to help control the spread of this disease honours their bravery. For us, Christina and I have decided to self-isolate. We have elderly and at-risk friends and family, and the thought of passing this terrible illness on to them horrifies us.  Remaining isolated and continuing to tell stories and (hopefully) entertain is what we can do to help the situation. So here’s what we’ve been up to in our isolation. And if you’re also on lock-down, we’ve got some tips on how to make the most of your isolation. Stay safe, keep dreaming of distant lands… and keep washing your hands! Cheers – Jim & Christina x The hardest thing about isolating is staying indoors a lot, especially when the day’s as pretty as this. But isolation doesn’t mean you have to live like a hermit.  As long as you’re careful, avoid any close contact and choose places that aren’t busy when you go out, you should be ok.  The worst part of this virus isn’t that you might catch it; it’s that you might pass it on without knowing. That’s the part that scares us. Christina and I are lucky that we have this beautiful garden at our disposal. After a long day of being cooped up inside, we’re enjoying a delicious glass of vino and a few games of backgammon. If you have a favourite board game (not Monopoly), now’s the chance to bring it out.  It looks like Christina and I won’t be travelling again any time soon, so we’re doing some of the things that we’ve wanted to do but haven’t been home long enough to finish. My chilli plants have started pumping out crops and crops of fruit, so I’m drying them to make chilli oil. It’s very easy – find a sunny window and just hang the chillies up by their stems. I’ve used a length of picture wire. They take between three days to a week to dry completely. Then you chop them up and put them in a jar of oil. After a week or so, you should have a tasty spicy dressing. Tonight, I’ve cooked up an Indian curry for dinner. Just melting a blob of butter into the saag tarka dhal with my blowtorch. Nothing like a bit of food theatre! One thing we’ve changed that’s made a big difference to our days in isolation is we’re eating up to the dinner table more. Rather than eating on the sofa in front of the TV, this change of scenery helps with the tedium of being stuck at home. We’ve also started a new thing where we put on music that represents the food of the country. Spotify has playlists specifically for international food! Tonight is obviously Indian music, but other nights we’ve played Italian classics (That’s Amore!) for our risotto and French cafe style tunes to go with our cheese plates. It’s fun and a way to travel without leaving the house. I love getting into the kitchen and this isolation is creating the perfect opportunity.  Christina’s about to tuck into one of my signature sausage rolls for lunch. These are super easy by the way. Frozen pre-rolled puff pastry sheets and sausages with the skins removed.  Lay the sausage meat on the pastry, roll it up and seal it and whack it in the oven (180ºC for about 15 minutes). Before you cook them, these freeze really well too by the way. Cook them from frozen at 160°C for about 25 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. It’s important to keep doing the things you normally do – especially those that make you happy. Thankfully we have plenty of gin, dry vermouth and olives in the house at the moment for martini o’ clock! Back in the kitchen, I’m baking my weekly loaf of bread. You can use regular flour but strong bread flour is better. Then you can add all the seeds and things in as you go. If you’re interested, I’ll be sharing my recipe and method for baking bread later this week – though if you’re thinking of baking your own, best start hunting for baker’s yeast now – there seems to be a shortage for some weird reason. If there’s one thing I am genuinely happy about it’s my wine club subscription to Cupitt Estate. These guys – with their beautiful cellar door in Ulladulla, NSW – make superb wine and are still sending out their top picks. This is a great way to keep your wine stash topped up and also to help local producers. If you have a favourite winery, why not look into whether they have a club you can join or if they’re still delivering? Tonight, we’re enjoying a bit of cheese with one of our new wines from Cupitt’s – the Slaughterhouse Red – a Shiraz Cabernet blend – while we finish this surreal miniseries on Netflix. If you’re looking for a really weird show to watch, check out the Tiger King.  Travel tips for self-isolation So much of travel and our motivation to see the world is based on creating memories, so why not tap into those memories you’ve already made and revisit some of the incredible places you’ve been to? Whether that’s just looking through old travel photos – or even making them into an album you can have pop up on your TV when it goes on standby, or making a dish that you ate while you we were away (like the taralli from Puglia we made at home) or music that reminds of that time you were away. Here are some other clever ways we’ve found to travel without leaving your house. Visit virtual Chicago Our friends from Choose Chicago tourism board sent an amazing list of things you can see and do just with the aid of wifi. Click here to download the pdf and sit back to explore the Windy City! You can take an architectural tour of Frank Lloyd  Wright’s home, visit the beautiful Art Institute of Chicago, go into the Adler Planetarium, peer into the wildlife of the city’s zoos and aquariums, learn recipes from Chicago’s finest chefs, and even hook into the world-renown music scene here all through the click of a hyperlink. Cook along with Thai chefs and eat like you’re back in Chiang Mai The Thai tourism board – Hug Thailand – is working with Chat Thai, an excellent Thai restaurant in Sydney running live-stream cooking classes on Facebook! Every Friday at 4pm, check out what the kitchen is cooking.  This really reminds me of when we had a cooking lesson in Bangkok recently – the most fun we’ve had on the road! You also get the recipe and can watch the lesson in your own time! Get help with that novel you’ve been thinking about They say there’s a book in everyone, the only problem is never having the time to get it started.  Well, you’re at home now, so why not try your hand? If you’re not sure about where to start, how to get the middle going or what you do to finish, you should check out the online lessons from the Australian Writers’ Centre.  I did a course for feature writers years ago with these guys and it was brilliant. I’m sure their fiction-writing course is just as good. If you can’t go to the places of your dreams, perhaps you can create them.  The AWC also does a course on content creation, which is just about the smoothest segway to my last idea… Start your own blog! One of the main reasons we started Mr & Mrs was so that we could google our own lives! Having a searchable resource online of what you’ve done stops the frustration of trying to remember what you did at Christmas last year. It also started out as a creative outlet for me and a place for Christina to put her beautiful photos.  From that, I’ve turned this into my full-time job and Christina – as well as Hair Romance now runs Photography Romance with her sister Mary. There are so many more reasons to start your own blog too, and if that’s something that interests you, check out our post on how to start your own blog here. It explains the basics of starting up and has advice about hosting (use our special link to BlueHost here), platforms and domains and platforms. We hope you’ve enjoyed this Weekly Edition and that you’re safe and well. Keep your chin up and let’s hope we’ll all be free again soon! thoughts {2.9.17}
I didn’t even realise September was the start of Spring how exciting!!
very, very, VERY excited for IT to premier this thursday like my oh my I’ve been waiting months for this; wish boy & I could download it to the cinema room & watch it just between us with some wine but still !!!
can’t believe I might actually move out v soon, I’m v v v v excited at just the thought & I’ve found some potential places & just excitement !!
today marks literally 2 weeks of eating mostly crap, I sorta don’t really care though, so much has been going on & I’m just doing the best I can & that’s all that matters. I have plenty of time to get myself back on track & sort things out. I’ve also been really hungry lately which is super unlike me, I never have an appetite at all
woah have some photography work I really need to do eep
had an epic swim today. Went to the usual spot but there was a change in the water & an abundance of fish this time. I literally jumped straight into a school of fish & just dived along with them it was utterly gorgeous
also so happy that I managed to find a petrol station that hadn’t raised their prices yet (seriously though Australia your petrol inflation is ridiculous, jumping 30c in one go is stupid) & filled up completely #justadultthings tbh tho I’m so over my weekly budget this week already tho so lewl
the relationships in my life have been changing so much lately & although it’s awesome, it’s also super stressful & I’m realising just how tiring it can be to be constantly unsure or stressing about these kind of things
reaaaaallly need to stock up on red wine this week; what are other good ‘things’ that help take the edge off anxiety & stress ?
just go insanely distracted looking for jobs in the area I’m thinking of moving. I can’t believe I’m actually considering to moving to that area of Sydney, but it would be a really interesting experience & I’m really eager to just try some new things & have some new experiences. Side note: I found a hostess job at this bar & i’d actually love to do something like that but I’d have to commit my friday & weekend evenings which is pretty rough, especially when I think about needing sleep, but it’d be a heck of a job :D
I’m just buzzing right now
I ate 2 entire family packets of corn chips today lewl
poor tummy is aching a bit but oh well
tomorrow I should really eat some fruit
he was such a cutie today :3
I’ve felt like such a homebody this week; it’s been a bit weird I feel like I’ve started fulling back into my old habits of not wanting to go out & isolating myself a little; not sure if this is just a temporary thing or if I should be worried or what is going on
damn I need to take of my old nail polish my nails look ratchet
omg it’s so bad. I tried to be so organised at the beginning of this week & pre-buy a week’s worth of healthy food for my cleanse/to stay on my budget, but because my body wanted stuff I didn’t buy I ended up going so over my budget from buying other food this week that I just gave up on trying to save... but hopefully it all evens out & I get through what I bought for this week next week; i fkn hope so because my savings are just disappearing lewl; job definitely needed
so grateful for having a proper sleep in about 2 weeks last night
I was meant to go out so much this week & I didn’t, I’m really annoyed at myself, but also feel slightly helpless because I just didn’t feel up to it at all
so in love with all my crystals atm like wow; my room feels like such an energetic, healing & loving place. it’ll be kinda sad not to be here if I move out, but I’m really keen to try something new & my crystals can come with me & I’ll always be able to visit
SHIT I forgot to buy my card for father’s day when I went to the shops
I really hope I can be there for honey tomorrow on father’s day & that we can just have a good time, but I have a feeling I’m going to be a little dead & my stomach is going to be worse for wear again (had really annoying cramps today)
so much going on right now wow
I swear every week I say to myself man I’d love to go on some kinda spiritual/health/yoga retreat; a.k.a so much is going on I feel like I need a break, I’m eating so much crap I need to force my body to get back to normal & I need to immerse in a space for a whole week
who doesn’t love a good kiss on the lips & when they hold the back of your head at the same time *sigh*
very proud of myself for not letting my self-consciousness impede me from getting on with my day; sometimes when I get my spouts of tummy pains and/or bloating I just retreat, don’t want to move & don’t want to be seen, but I’ve been particularly adamant lately about not doing that & just getting on with the day & today was one of those days & it turned out to be super epic & I let myself be vulnerable in front of someone I really care about & it worked out totally fine; it’s so easy to build things up in our heads when everything is totally fine. Remember, it’s not worth wasting an experience of a day purely because you feel self conscious
I need to order a box of bananas again I think
things I want to eat this week: smoothies, green juice, papaya, bananas, my potent tonics, greens
I need to get back into eating raw salads & ooo maybe I should invest in gf oats again cause I found them so satiating & such a good go-to when I was away
been smashing it so hard at the gym lately & I’m so proud of myself. Although I don’t have that dream ass or anything I’ve definitely noticed some good change in the shape of my bum, but particularly in the smoothness of my skin of all things! I was really starting to get some cellulite, but I’ve managed to get rid of almost all of it since starting lifting weights & I’m just stoked! I’ve also increased my weights heaps on certain things & it’s awesome to know I’m stronger even if you can’t necessarily see it on yourself
I’ve missed dance for 2 weeks & now I’m just paranoid I won’t know the routine enough & don’t know whether to go, but have paid for the 10 weeks so ahhhh
I’m gonna stop cause I just realised how long this thoughts post already is haha
