#BucketList I never thought I would see one of these in person, let alone a small field of them, so this made my top-10 insect encounters list.
Apparently hummingbird moths are widespread in North America, and regionally can be somewhat common, but not for this city slicker. From a distance at first glance it had me fooled – I did think it was a tiny hummingbird for a split second. Amazing how this moth even has a tail that opens like a fan when hovering in the air, just like hummingbirds do. I’m not sure if their looks mimic hummingbirds intentionally as some sort of defense or if it’s simply parallel evolution, but whatever the case, it was a real treat getting up close to this unusual moth on my excursion up North.
Interesting side note about this footage: The moth’s wingbeats synced with the video’s frame rate so that the moth appears as if it’s floating on its tip-toes and slowly flapping its wings, but in actuality the wings were beating so fast they were a blur just like a hummingbird. They made the same buzzing sound as a hummingbird too, only on a smaller/quieter scale (just barely audible in the video)

A gnat is any of many species of tiny flyinginsects in the dipterid suborder Nematocera, especially those in the families Mycetophilidae, Anisopodidae and Sciaridae. They can be both biting and non-biting. Most often they fly in large numbers, called clouds. "Gnat" is a loose descriptive category rather than a phylogenetic or other technical term, so there is no scientific consensus on what constitutes a gnat. Some entomologists consider only non-biting flies to be gnats. Certain universities and institutes also distinguish eye gnats: the Smithsonian Institution describes them as "non-biting flies, no bigger than a few grains of salt, ... attracted to fluids secreted by your eyes".
