Monday morning, the nerves were long gone, her prep work was largely done and the magnitude of the looming moment finally hit Michelle Crechiolo hard.

That night, when the Penguins battled the Philadelphia Flyers, she would become the first female broadcaster to ever call a regular season Penguins game.

When Crechiolo realized that morning that she would be a trailblazer and perhaps an inspiration to other women in hockey, her thoughts drifted to one of her favorite photos — a picture of her when back she was playing in Mini Mites.

“It’s making me emotional thinking about it now,” she later told the Post-Gazette, her voice quivering. “I’ve got the Jofa gloves, wooden stick. I’ve got on a little pink turtleneck under all my equipment. And I’m just posing and cheesing, and I’m missing a tooth. And I’m just so happy to be a hockey player.

“I’m just thinking about what that little girl would say if I told her that I was doing this, doing color commentary on a Pittsburgh Penguins radio broadcast. It’s just so surreal. It really is. I stuck with hockey because I loved it, and it’s led me here. And I just couldn’t be more grateful to be in this position. It’s wild.”

Around 10 a.m. Sunday, Crechiolo received a text message from Leo McCafferty, the Penguins’ vice president of content and production. He told her they believed she would be a great option to step in for Phil Bourque, who was sick. He asked if she would be up for taking his place on the radio broadcast.

“I was like, ‘Oh, hell yeah,’” she said with a laugh. “That was my response.”

When she hung up the phone, she had a brief moment of nervousness, wondering what she had just gotten herself into. But then she just felt “pure excitement.” She rushed downstairs to share the news with her boyfriend, Chuck.

“That’s when it hit me. ‘Oh my god, I’m going to be the color analyst on a National Hockey League broadcast between the Penguins and Flyers,’” she said.

Not only that, Crechiolo is the first woman to do play-by-play or color commentary on a local TV or radio broadcast for any of Pittsburgh’s three big-league teams.

Once Crechiolo calmed down, she went about her business as usual. She headed to UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex to watch practice, then in the locker room she gathered as many “nuggets” as she could for Monday’s broadcast.

Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, Tristan Jarry and Rickard Rakell were among the players who gave her support and advice — or a good-natured ribbing.

When they began broadcasting her quick hits up on the Jumbotron, Crechiolo was anxious about stepping into an on-camera role. But something coach Mike Sullivan said about a player making his NHL debut resonated with her.

“He said, ‘It’s not about putting pressure on yourself. You’re there for a reason. It’s about getting excited for the opportunity, because you’re just doing something you love to do,’” Crechiolo said. “And that was how I felt about this.”

Name: Mr. Egg, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Hot Dog

Debut: BurgerTime

BurgerTime is one of those retro games and that's about it. It existed, and it's Retro!, and I feel like people don't really care about it aside from that. It never even got an awkward attempt at a scrimblo adventure reboot, like Frogger did! Poor BurgerTime.

Anyway, my first time playing BurgerTime was not by playing BurgerTime at all, but a SpongeBob Flash game clone of it. I have no personal connection to BurgerTime itself... but I know it has some enemies that are living foods! I always get a kick out of that! So I'm going to talk about some of the various design incarnations of them!

These original designs are exactly what you would expect from a 1982 arcade game. I feel like I've seen Pac-Man ghosts drawn EXACTLY like this. I like how Mr. Egg has the strangely realistic crispy bubbling detail around his edges. They're all fine.

...is what I felt before I noticed their elbows and knees! Ew! Bones! Wretched creatures!

Ohoho... now what have we here? The in-game sprites are delightful! The simplicity makes them very cute! Their feet are interesting, being just little floating lines, except for Mr. Egg's, because his legs are made of amorphous albumen! Mr. Egg is really the breakout star here. Look at his yolk! That's his EYE! This is so awesome! That's such a rare design choice to see, especially since egg creatures that are not of the "creature hatching from them" variety are pretty rare themselves.

Mr. Pickle is no slouch either! I appreciate him being specifically a pickle slice, often portrayed as nicely crinkle-cut. I just have to question why he is a villain! Pickles are one of Burger's best friends! This is like if Cheese was a villain! I think if anything Mr. Pickle should be a cute little sidekick on the side of burgers, and in his place can be, I don't know, Mr. Olive? Of course, pickles are much funnier than olives!

Mr. Hot Dog is not as interesting as the other two, but a simple sausage with eyes and feet is still cute. He is like the leader of the bunch, the main antagonist of our hero, Peter Pepper, who I do not really care about. I like that it's him! Burgers and hot dogs are like counterparts, but in no way equals. Hot dogs are easier to hold and eat, but burgers are just Better. And hot dogs have finally decided to give burgers a piece of their mind!

This flyer art is funny. I don't LIKE any of the designs showcased, but they're funny! Faces are moved around on the foods, noses are introduced to the series, and Mr. Egg is now a slice of a hard-boiled egg. You will also notice the elusive Mr. Lemon! Mr. Lemon is not real! I don't know why there is such an emphasis on lemon here. Finally, of course, you will notice the personified Cheese, as she noselessly beckons Peter to recline atop a beef patty. Ooh la la! Don't you wish you were invited to hang out with such a beautiful female cheese who is a girl woman?

Really, the designs of the core food fiends never diverged much from the classic cartoon-style versions they started out with, appearing like that in pretty much every sequel. Except...!

In BurgerTime World Tour, which was not a good game at all, these guys have been utterly rebooted! Now known as Frank Furter, Ruthless Dill, and Sonny! Are these their real names? Or just some similar guys?

The designs are rather basic, as to be expected from Foods With Faces, but it IS interesting seeing them generally made so much more monstrous. Something ESPECIALLY interesting is that Sonny the egg is the only one with limbs, reminding me of how Mr. Egg is the only one to have actual legs in the original sprites!

Ready for the SCARIEST redesign from World Tour?

This game's version of Peter Pepper is this horrible gentrifying millenial and I'm glad his game was prematurely delisted. I hope he got eaten by an egg and chewed by teeth made of yolk. I hate him!

Now for the lore:

The Northern portion of Hyde’s Crossing, referred to as the Icerun, is the cold and snowy portion of the kingdom Roxy called home before she made her way southward.

Since The Incident that saw dragons (among other critters) being held under scrutiny by humans (again), Roxy’s been unceremoniously dumped into the South until things cool down, thusly stripped of her cushy life as a role model and professional speed flyer as well as being turned on by her fans on account of rising paranoia that what happened to that nobleman could happen to them next.

Roxy isn’t domesticated by any means, but she’s vastly unprepared for how much the wilds of Hyde’s Crossing’s mainland have changed for better or worse. Being flung unceremoniously back into the wilds has her incredibly frazzled and bitter. She’s taken to stealing and hoarding fabrics from the villages she homes near, as her old hoard is inaccessible at current.

Her hoard consisted of various antique beauty products meant for untangling hair (brushes, picks, combs, etc.), as well as various cloths and fabrics with which she could create and mend her wardrobe. Being suddenly unable to access a hoard and the comfort items that make it up is very stressing and harmful (often scarring) for a dragon!

So she currently flounders around and tries (and fails) to make good of her situation, isolating herself and slowly descending into a well of self-loathing as her mind fills the quiet lack of distractions with big feelings she never really bothered to sort through prior. Things could get worse before they get better, but a certain young girl’s curiosity and unyielding determination could be what is needed to pull her future guardian from her slump…

notes: my first piece ever! just a little something to start my blog off <3

SAM WAS A NERVOUS FLYER. there was no doubting that. when you first made the team, you had been warned about her nervous flying habits. she would pace the lounge till no end, her knee would always be bouncing, and take-off she could tear the arm-rests from the bottom of the plane with how tight she held them. 

you were due to make your debut this week against the republic of ireland in the first group stage for the world cup. so you were finally flying out with the team and not with the reserves.

pre-flight, you sat with mary. she and you were around a similar age, both of you being on the younger side of your teammates. you noticed as macca pointed out sam's anxiety that had already began to kick in. she had hated flying ever since she was young, it hadn't changed as she neared 30.

"y/n," kennedy called over to you. you looked over from the tiktok that mary was showing you to speak with alanna. "swap seats with me?" she asked. you raised your eyebrows at her.

hesitating before responding, you ask "why?"

alanna rolled her eyes before sighing. leaning in closer, she spoke in a low voice. "because i'm sat with sammy, and she's a nervous wreck" she told you, "and i am so tired, i just want to sleep."

you looked over at sam who was still bouncing her knee, her nails in between her teeth. it couldn't be that bad, you thought. "sure," you shrugged, "i don't mind."

sam was so out of it, she didn’t even register who she was supposed to sit next to. so when she saw you sitting in the isle, where alanna would’ve sat, she didn’t really focus on anything else but putting her bag up. 

“sat with me, huh?” sam tried to give a smile, act like the impending take-off wasn’t bothering her, but you could see right through her. “aren’t you lucky,” she chuckled. 

“so i’ve heard,” you laughed in response. you put your knees to the side so sam could slide in to the window seat and get comfortable before the take-off, instead she didn’t move. she looked up and down the isle before cracking her knuckles. 

“do you want to sit in the isle or the window?” you asked. you knew sam was scared to fly, so maybe if you took the window seat she wouldn’t be so nervous. 

sam looked taken back by your offer. “are you sure you don’t want to sit in the isle?” she asked.

you shook your head, “no, i don’t care,” you shuffled down into the next seat so you were sat next to the window. “i don’t like isle anyway,” you lied.

as take-off neared, sam was only getting more and more nervous. the captain had announced that we would be taking off and the air hostesses had finished their demonstration and had sat down ready for the plane to move. “you good?” you asked her when he nails were getting chewed again. 

“aw man,” she sighed, “i just hate flying.” she shook her head. “i don’t know what it is. i just get so nervous.” sam admitted.

“do you want to hold my hand?” you asked. sam turned her head quickly to look at you, surprised by what you said. “take-off is the worst part,” you shrugged, “my mum used to hold mine when i was little.”

sam took a moment before nodding. “yes please,” she whispered, a soft laugh following in suit. 

as the plane began to reverse and move onto the runway, sam’s grip continued to tighten. when the plane began to travel down the tarmac, she was practically squeezing your hand red. you didn’t mind, only matching her strength. her knee bounced intensely; eyes closed as her ears popped being in the air. you placed your hand on her knee to comfort her. she opened her eyes to see your hand resting on her tan skin. your touch completely distracted her from her anxieties and soon you were up in the air and sam was feeling much calmer. 

“not so bad, huh?” you rested your head against the back of your seat, turning to face sam. 

“maybe i should sit with you every flight,” she joked.

you laughed along, not bothering to comment how she was still holding your hand; fingers intertwined. you wouldn’t mind sitting next to sam on every flight if was like this.

The Broadway revival of Parade debuted last night at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. Alfred Uhry's musical tells the true story of Leo Frank, a Jewish man lynched by antisemites in 1915.

As patrons stood in line, Neo-Nazi protesters gathered outside the theatre, harassing the crowd, holding signs scrawled with slurs and handing out flyers full of antisemitic propaganda. Some were identified as members of the 'Goyim Defense League'. No-one was arrested.

After the show, Ben Platt (who plays Leo Frank) took to social media to address the situation, which he called 'ugly and scary but a wonderful reminder of why we're telling this particular story and how special and powerful art and, particularly, theater can be.'

The continuing cycle of art imitating life shows us why it's important to keep telling these stories. It serves as a reminder to listen to Jewish voices. To stand against hate in all its ugly forms.

Antisemitism cannot - must not - be normalized. It cannot be overlooked. Be a part of the fight against it. If not for a friend or loved one, at the very least as an act of kindness, compassion and basic human decency.
