In I Fell in Love with Hope, we are introduced to Sam, a person who has lived in the hospital as long as they can remember. Sam witnesses things that a normal child wouldn’t have, never ageing, never sleeping, following the sick as long as they needed to. Sam’s first love, a boy also named Sam, was taken from them by an unnamed autoimmune disorder, and after this, they lose all hope of loving again or being happy. Until Sony, Neo, Coeur, and Hikari come along. They steal things from gas stations and sneak onto the roof with their contraband. They write hit lists and smuggle cats into the hospital. But all Sam’s friends are getting sicker, and they can’t do anything to help them. Neo is slowly starving away, Sony’s remaining lung is about to give out, Coeur’s (half) heart is beating it’s last, and Hikari’s outlook on the world is bleak. So they plan an escape, even though Sam knows that they can’t go with their friends. By the end of this book, I could really feel what the characters were going through. This is what books are supposed to be. They’re supposed to make you feel something.
