Daily fish fact #386
Fish anatomy!
Tumblr media
Fish have different types of scales that are as varied as fish themselves! The most common type of scale is called a leptoid scale, which has small bony ridges on the outer part and connective tissue on the inner part. They're thin, translucent and not as strong as many other fish scales, but they allow for more flexibility and less drag!

“In an effort to come up with a renewable, biodegradable design material that also eliminates a landfill waste stream, French designers are proposing to cover the walls of your home with fish scales.
In reality the idea is an elegant tile made from fish scales. It’s called Scalite, and it separates then combines naturally-occuring minerals and the collagen in the fish scales to create a beautiful, durable, naturally fire-resistant tile.
Fish scales are sometimes turned into fertilizer and fish oil supplements, but are often just thrown out into normal landfill waste streams along with the head and the bones.
Erik de Laurens came up with the idea and started the design company Scale with his cousin Edourad.
While it’s difficult to zero in on reliable supply chains of fish scales, even on the [generally] recycling-conscious continent of Europe, the square or rectangular tiles of Scalite are priced in between common natural stone like white Corian, and marble, at about $35 per squre foot, or €300 per square meter.
“If you’re really serious about your environmental impact then this is a really good solution because it’s basically natural,” Laurens told Fast Company.
Scale have designed the Scalite tiles to be useable in a wide variety of applications, from interior decoration in private homes and offices, to furniture, to retail displays.
A variety of natural dies can create wild marble-like patterns in shades as various as moss green and mustard yellow.
Sadly, and perhaps ironically, they aren’t water-resistant. One should not go and plaster these tiles in a bathroom, as they will absorb any water that they come in contact with. Scale has contracted a biochemist to find a solution to this defect in a true, natural way to maintain the product’s green credentials.”

Long Finned Asian Arowana (Scleropages formosus)
These fish look like real-life dragons to me! This species is native to freshwater habitats in Southeast Asia. They are endangered in the wild. However, they can be captive bred so many individuals are kept as pets or as exhibits in public aquariums around the world. They are considered a good luck symbol in Chinese culture since they resemble an Asian dragon.

fish scales in salmon run are rewarded based on:
1: starting the fight (3) 2: how much damage you as a team do (up to 8 for beating it) 3: beating the fight with time to spare (up to 3 for 30 secs left)
and the rarity is random, but the chances increase the higher your rank is

A scale from the Linea Lateralis (lateral line organ)
Some fishes have a row of tiny scales on each side of their body, which works as a sensory organ, detecting vibrations in water. The little hole in the middle of the scale let the water penetrate under the scale, into a tiny canal which conducts the liquid in contact with the external structure of a sensory cells' group, connected to a nerve. The impulse that the nerve record depends on the pressure of the fluid : it can detect very low pressure variations, which allow the fish to perceive movements of other fishes around or to regulate its own swimming speed.

Fish scales are being used to create a better LED panel.
Fish scales are being used to create a better LED panel.
Scientists have discovered that by microwaving fish waste, they can quickly and efficiently create carbon nano-onions (CNOs)—a unique nanoform of carbon that has applications in energy storage and medicine. This method could be used to make cheaper and more sustainable LEDs in the future. The researchers from Nagoya Institute of Technology in Japan published their findings in Green…

The Microscope
Maxine Kumin
Anton Leeuwenhoek was Dutch.
He sold pincushions, cloth, and such.
The waiting townsfolk fumed and fussed
As Anton's dry goods gathered dust.
He worked, instead of tending store,
At grinding special lenses for
A microscope. Some of the things
He looked at were:
mosquitoes' wings,
the hairs of sheep, the legs of lice,
the skin of people, dogs, and mice;
ox eyes, spiders' spinning gear,
fishes' scales, a little smear
of his own blood,
and best of all,
the unknown, busy, very small
bugs that swim and bump and hop
inside a simple water drop.
Impossible! Most Dutchmen said.
This Anton's crazy in the head.
We ought to ship him off to Spain.
He says he's seen a housefly's brain.
He says the water that we drink
Is full of bugs. He's mad, we think!
They called him dumkopf, which means dope.
That's how we got the microscope.
