#finn tutuola x you

Note
Svu oneshot where Reader is grumpy? You can decide what and why, you always have good ideas!🥰
A/N: Short and probably not good but at least I tried :) --- Annoyed and with a headache you came out of the interrogation room with Finn and stood by your captain, who was already standing at the mirror glass and had probably overheard everything so that you didn't have to say anything. In fact, you didn't want to make a single note of yourself.
You heard the two of them talking, but the words became more and more incomprehensible as you tried to rest your head on your hands and close your eyes for a brief moment.
It was already 8am again and the first detectives arrived at the presidium while you and your team were working a night shift. You've had next to no sleep for the past few days. A serial rapist was at his best and as soon as you fell into your bed exhausted after work and closed your eyes, your cell phone began to rang; he had struck again.
The hand that was still resting on your back sat you back in the present and you looked into the brown hazel eyes of your boss and best friend. "All good?"
"Yes, just tired of being tired."
She smiled worriedly in acceptance and tilted her head to one side as she continued to slide her hand up and down your spine. "How about you take the rest of the day off? You've been working really hard the last few days."
"Not an option," you said with determination, took a deep breath and threw yourself back into the interrogation again.
Finn pointed his finger at you and already putting his free hand on the handle of the door to open it before he looked back to Olivia, laughing and shaking his head in disbelief. "Fuck, this kid is though."
---
"Are you alright?" Amanda leaned in her chair for a short pause and looked over at you, watching how you threw yourself into your chair and pulled yourself to the desk with a little more force. "Yeah, why?"
It was already 2pm and you were hungry but there was still no time to eat or rest. You pulled a file from the huge pile next to you and tried to concentrate on what was written in it, but it just didn't work in your momentary state. Your attention span and patience were so short due to sleep deprivation that you didn't even had the sentence you just read in your head.
"You look mad."
"That's just my face." you cried out and leaned back into your chair. With your head back resting in your neck, you folded your hands over your eyes and tried to block out the world around you.
You didn't even noticed that Olivia and Finn had already returned from field work and were standing behind you. They too, like Amanda and Kat, had to laugh at your grumpiness and bad mood. They never took the way you talked to them seriously when you weren't the happy and smiling person they knew.
Instead, they took it with humor and tried to push you up even further, at least Finn.
"Man, I can't stand you being this grumpy." said the only man in the gang of girls jokingly and put a hand on your shoulder while shaking you a little in your seat.
He also didn't take it seriously, even thought it was nice to be able to argue with you without you being able to misunderstand it. In this state of your ego you weren't even thinking about what was said to you. At the end of each of these days, they always had something to laugh about with you.
"Then damn it, sit down." you stated before you heard the bags and wrappers. As if you had woken up from your trance, you looked around to find them.
Olivia, the only one who didn't like to see you like that, had brought you and the others food as an encouragement and reward for the hard work, which you could enjoy together as a family during a little break.
---
After lunch you fell in your bad mood again and you weren't exactly the greatest detective someone would wish for when they were arrested. It wasn't better back in the interrogation room, there were screams, words and therefore some confessions that you could squeeze out of the perpetrators.
10pm rolled around and you still weren't done with work. Kat, Finn and Olivia already went home and announced the fight against the stressful day as a win while you and Amanda wanted to look over and sign the remaining files that piled up at your desks.
The silence that normally never existed in the open-office was no great help in the fight against the tiredness and even the soft music that Amanda had turned on did nothing more than threaten to close your eyelids. Again and again you fell into a micro sleep but you absolutely wanted to achieve your goal for today so you fought against it; not much was missing.
"Why are you glaring at me behind my back?" you asked the blonde standing behind you and put your pen down to write for the last time today.
Curiously you waited for a question or an answer from her, but only heard the scratching of a cardboard box. "Umm," she walked around you and stood by your side. You could literally feel her penetrating gaze on you. "You didn't eat my food, did you?"
This time it was you who laughed and looked up at her. You threw your pen in the corner of your desk and closed the file before you put your hands on your stomach, leaned back in your chair and put your feet on the table to finally relax.
A hand wandered in front of you as you shook your free wrist a few times, looked at your imaginary watch and examined it broodingly. "Wasn't suicidal last time I checked, so no."

Amanda Rollins X Reader

Tumblr media
She had a problem, you always knew she did. From the moment that you sent to join her team, you were told about it. You didn't judge her, not at all, everyone had their own addiction to something. As time passed the two of you went ahead and broke a rule "never date a coworker". The two of you hooked up after your first dinner date and with that Finn owed Luna twenty bucks. The first time you grew suspicious about her gambling again was when she didn't come home until at least two in the morning. While that wasn't abnormal for the detective, what really did it was the smell of smoke and liquor. When she was questioned by you she said she was at the bar with Luna and Finn. You accepted that as her alibi by the next day after Luna came up to her and thanked her for buying a round of drinks. The day went on, as usual, dealing with a case that nearly got ugly in the end. Amanda as the first one to leave, saying she had something to tend to, which prompted you to leave a little bit after her, tailing her out of your own suspicion and curiosity. You came to a club soon enough, one that you and the team had been trying to get into for a while for its underground casino. You watch as Amanda walks right in, you entering after five minutes. She was nowhere in sight and you felt out of place, especially with the sight of women standing up on their own stages, performing for the people. With another look around, it became clear to you how much you stuck out like a sore thumb. A few people were watching you with caution, large men dressed in suits, guards from what you could guess. In a flash, two of them were at your sides, hands-on your arms. "Hey, what the Hell?" You snapped at the two, pulling your arms from their hold. One of them quickly snatched the badge clean off your belt, making you curse yourself for leaving it on. "Think we wouldn't notice a cop walk in here?" He questioned, grabbing your arm and dragging you into the back room. A man stood in the middle of the room, watching as they close the door and practically throw you to the floor. You land on your knees, your hands on the ground in front of you to stop you from hitting your face. "You guys just won't let up, will you?" The man questions, pulling on your hair so you meet his eyes. A twisted smile takes over his face, eyes trailing up and down your body. "Maybe we need to send you and your friends a message." He roughly lets go of your head, standing up straight. You glare at him, eyes darting around the moment that two goons move in. "Have fun guys." -><- A knock at the door woke Luna up from her nap on the couch, her arm thrown over her eyes. A groan leaves her lips as the knock adds to the pounding in her head. "Go away." She hisses, screwing her eyes closed, trying to fall back asleep. Outside the door, you lean against the doorframe, blood dripping from your face onto the floor of the porch. "Luna?" You questioned, knocking at the door again. Movement could be heard from the other side of the door before the door swung open. Luna now stood in the doorway, eyes wide in shock at the sight in front of her. You were beaten, black and blue, and bleeding. "Oh my Gods, Y/N." She pulls you into the house, intent on patching you up before anything else. Your hands shake as you sit on her couch, probably getting blood on it. Luna rushes back, phone between her shoulder and ear and a first aid kit in her hands. "Yeah, no. Can you just come home?" That gave away that it was Finn she was talking to. She put the phone down and got to patching you up. "Sorry about the couch." You whisper as she finishes up, Luna shaking her head. Finn had come home a few minutes ago, pacing by the window. When asked what happened you didn't give an answer, staring at the blood that was on your hands. Finn was on the phone soon enough, "We don't know what happened. She won't talk to us. Yeah. Okay. See you soon." Finn nodded to Luna, who placed her hand on your shoulder. Soon enough the door swung open to show Amanda, fear in her eyes as she locked them with you. "Y/N," She breathed out, taking in your state before she was on her knees in front of you, holding your shaking hands in hers. "I'm so sorry." She says, tearing up. "I'm sorry I wasn't there." She says, pressing a kiss to your knuckles. "I'm sorry I didn't believe you."

Fight Club
One shot #53 - requested by @villains-are-hot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: the boys don’t take too kindly to each other sharing their affections for you
Pairing: Basically every male SVU character x reader (minus Cragen and Stabler)
Warnings: physical violence?? idk honestly, I don’t think there’s anything else
You and Liv had just been working on a long and exhausting case the night before and you were close to dropping from exhaustion.
With your hair pulled back and concealer weakly covering the dark circles on your under-eyes, you trudged back into the office, waving over at Liv with a tired smile.
As you sit down at your desk, you barely have time to put your things down and get settled before there's a faint shadow casted over you. You smile a little to yourself, turning to find which of the boys it was. There was always at least 1 or 2 of them hanging around you. They were great coworkers but in all honesty, you wanted them as more than that. You just weren't sure which of them you wanted more.
"Hi Nick." You greet with a small smile as you see his sweet face looking back at you.
"Hey y/n, brought you a coffee from the shop down the street." He says, placing a steaming cup down on the counter of your desk. You breath in the scent of that which brings you back to life and let out a contented sigh, making him chuckle.
"My hero. I was definitely about to pass out without this Amaro, so I thank you." You giggle, making his smile grow.
"Yo y/n!" Finn says, appearing behind you, holding a small paper bag in his hands.
"Morning Finn. You're looking cheerful this morning." You smile over at him with the same warm affection you gave Nick, not seeing the level of growing tension in his face.
"That is because I brought my favorite girl a breakfast pastry from the bakery by my place. They taste amazing so I'm sure you'll like it." He says, placing the bag down beside the coffee.
"Real sweet of you Amaro." Finn notes, his voice full of a kind of bitterness as he looks at the coffee cup.
“Could say the same for you Tutuola.” Nick growls back, forcing a smile at him, clearly tense in the jaw which makes you frown, unsure of what exactly is going on.
"Boys boys, you spoil me. I will be able to get through the day now thanks to both of you." You smile, giving them both a look of gratitude.
"My pleasure." They say at the same time, giving each other a look of disgust before walking away tensely to their own desks.
"Morning everyone. Y/n, I meant to ask, did you finish that case last night? Looked rough so I was going to ask if I could help out, get some weight off your back." Munch says as he waltzes into the office, beaming with a grin at you in particular.
"Morning John. Yeah it was tough but me and Liv managed to pull through. I may have to hold you to that sometime though, it was definitely a rough night." You laugh, making Munch smile even wider.
"I look forward to it, I love to help out." He promises, walking over to his own desk after waving a small goodbye to you, earning his own glares from both Fin and Nick.
“Is it just me or are the guys acting particularly... weird today?” You ask Liv in a whisper. She chuckles a little and nods in a show of agreement.
“Very weird.” She whispers back as she continues on her way, moving past you to her desk.
“Carisi you’re late! we’re supposed to be on a case together today, think you can handle that?” You tease as you see the cocky newer member of the team. The two of you had a quick bond and you were often found together for drinks after work which, without your knowledge, made the other males on the team increasingly angered.
After a few hours of sitting at your desk and filling out your report of your case with Olivia, you walk over to Cragens office and knock on the door, walking in when he beckons you and carefully placing it on his desk.
“That was a difficult case, you sure you got every detail into the report?” Cragen asks, giving you ‘the look’.
“Yes captain, I’m sure. Cross my heart.” You joke, grinning back at him. He nods to say you can leave, a small smile on his own face.
“Get that report done y/n? I’m sure it took a while, I know you’re pretty slow.” Carisi jokes, making you roll your eyes.
“You know Carisi, you’re probably slower than I am. I mean I’m not gonna race you or anything but I can go pretty fast...” You joke right back, smirking at his small blush and coy grin at the insinuation. You loved to mess with the guys when they gave you a hard time, it was just how your dynamics worked.
A few moments later, you’re sitting at your desk, analyzing the file for your new case when Rafael walks in with his usual swagger. You glance up from your papers to wave at him with a small smile and he does the same, a grin spreading at the sight of you.
But a mere seconds later you’re left confused when he makes a B-line to your desk rather than to Livs. He was collecting what was needed for the court order and bringing her usual coffee order, so it made no sense to you why he was coming to you.
“Good morning Raf. Shouldn’t you be with Liv or the Captain? Was there an issue with the paper work?” You ask with an eyebrow raised, taking a sip from your coffee.
“Oh no, nothings wrong. I’m actually about to go meet her right now to go over the details. So no need to worry bella.” He promises, making you blush as his accent alters and he says the term of endearment.
You supposed that was part of why you liked both him and Nick so much. They were both spanish and in truth, the accents made you go weak in the knees.
“Actually, I came over to ask if you would like to go out at all? I understand if you’d like to say no but I’ve decided it’s a good time to ask. You are an amazing woman and anyone would be lucky to take you out but I hope you’ll give me the chance to be el afortunado.” He states, kissing the top of your hand and leaving your mind in a bit of a frenzy.
You’d never been given the option as to which of the boys you would actually go out with any of them. The idea of choosing one of them seemed crazy only because you’d never had the opportunity to do so.
You look up at him, stunned.
“Well I would-” But before you can continue, Nick jumps out of his chair and comes storming towards the two of you.
“You really think some spanish love words are going to make her pick you? el burro sabe mas que tu!” He shouts, and you look back at him in shock. You already knew that one meant ‘donkeys know better than you’ because Nick had taught it to you months ago when you had begged him for a Spanish lesson when you were sitting at the bar.
Rafael scoffs a laugh, rolling his eyes in disbelief at him. “As if you haven’t had countless chances? Y/n isn’t a piece of meat Amaro, she’s not a bone to fight over like wild dogs.” He states, still laughing at Nick.
“Guys what the-” You start but this time Finn jumps in and joins them.
“If you two idiots get a chance then so do I!” He states loudly, getting right in Amaros face.
“Hey back off of her alright, she can decide for herself which of us she likes!” Carisi defends, jumping in himself and shoving Finn off of him.
You’re watching in shock at your favorite people fighting each other like frat boys and over you of all things. It was a ridiculous idea really, this was seemingly a thing of most girls dreams but for you, this was an absolute nightmare come true. Despite your love for them all, you never wanted to be put in this kind of position.
“Hey! Guys cut it out!” You cry, trying to get in between them.
Munch jumps in and you think he’s about to stop them but he joins in the chaos instead.
“If she’s going to choose anyone it’s not going to be you knuckleheads.” He scoffs, glaring at them all.
You watch as the argument ensues, the more time passing, the more physical it seems to get. Finn nearly punches out Carisi, Nick and Rafael are getting right in each others faces, shouting spanish profanities at each other and taking turns backing each other into walls and desks and chairs and Munch is shouting at Carisi with Finn.
People around the precinct are starting to stare, civilians look completely spooked by the scene and you stand in the middle, staring in horror, red as a tomato.
“Hey!” Cragen shouts from the doorway to his office but still, the attraction continues. Finally, after about 2 minutes of him shouting back at them he pulls out a whistle from his pocket and blows it hard. You can’t help but compare him to a kids soccor coach.
“I hesitate to ask what’s going on here. Are you all dogs? Did I really just have to blow a whistle to get your attention?! You’re all adults! Act like it!” He shakes his head, shutting the door behind him with a loud slam. They slowly go back to bickering but this time you’ve absolutely had enough.
“Cut it out! This is ridiculous! If any of you really liked me like I do you, you would’ve just asked me out! Rafael is right, I’m not a bacon treat for you to squabble over. Just stop!” You shout exasperatedly and they all stare back at you, mouths agape in shock.
You barely noticed you’d slipped your secret with how tired you really were.
“Which one of us?!” They all scramble to demand to know at once and you let out a sigh.
“Not the point! Get it together or it’ll quickly become none of you.” You warn, walking away and knowing they’ll be whisper arguing when you leave.
Liv comes to check on you and to voice her opinions and you agree and nod quietly but you silently work out the hunch that you were going to have a lot of trouble very fast...

Last Chapter
--------------
Ella sat between Olivia and Amanda, her deep burgundy dress stopping just above her knees. She pulled her leather jacket closer around her as the breeze began to pick up. Olivia noticed the small shiver that went down Ella’s spine and reached out to take her into a side hug. Even at twenty two years old Ella always felt a rush of comfort come over her when she was in mother’s arms.
“Are you sure you don’t want my coat honey?” She asked Ella after placing a kiss on her forehead.
“Nope,” Ella smiled, “I know exactly how to warm up. Let’s dance!”
Olivia laughed, “Well take Amanda out on the dance floor and as soon as I finish my glass of wine I will join you.”
“Promise?” Amanda raised her eyebrow, “I want a dance with my wife at this wedding not wedding.”
“I promise my love. I will dance with both of my beautiful ladies tonight,” Olivia smiled before Ella dragged Amanda to the dance floor.
Olivia watched them for a moment before she stood up and made her way to the railing on the outskirts of the party. She looked out across the water, swirling her wine glass gently in her hand. She remembered standing in this exact same spot a week before Elliot’s sudden disappearance nine years ago. They had been standing shoulder to shoulder Elliot’s hand gently brushing up against Olivia’s.
“You ever think about what your life is going to look like after Ella grows up?” Elliot asked her, brushing his hand across hers again causing goosebumps to run up Olivia’s arms.
“I try not to think about it too much,” Olivia sighed, “Sending her off to college and having an empty household is going to kill me.” Elliot laughed at this, “You will come to enjoy the quiet. The bliss of them going off and doing their own thing. She will make you proud.”
Olivia smiled, “I am sure that she will but what about you. What are you going to do when all your kids finally have flown the coop?”
“Spend the rest of my life bothering you and invading that empty household of yours,” Elliot said firmly, grabbing Olivia’s hand at this comment.
Olivia turned to Elliot all of the breath escaping her body as she realized that he was pressed up against her. Every piece of her body froze as he leaned in close to her. Just as he leaned forward Olivia’s brain made sense of the situation and pushed away. Without another word she ran away from him.
That was the last time they had been alone together before he had left her life forever. Nine years later she had gotten over the tiny fluttering of a crush realizing that it was nothing more than an adoration for one of the few key men in her life. Yet even now at the happiest she had ever been she still turned his words over in her head “I love you.” She never knew three words could cause such confusion. Sure she did love him… or she had at some point…but never in the way he was referring to. Ever since that day she had been trying to avoid him as much as possible with no success as cases became more and more intertwined. Part of her had begun to wish he had never came back at all. Sure not knowing if he was safe had slowly killed her but knowing he was safe and blatantly ignoring her marriage was worse. She took a large swig from her glass before someone saddled up next to her.
“What did I miss?” Elliot asked her.
Olivia laughed, “Nothing actually. We are celebrating them… not getting married.”
“Sounds like he had the right idea,” Elliot chuckled then moved his hand next to Olivia’s, “Remember the last time that we were here?”
Olivia nodded, “Seems like a lifetime ago.”
“Yet, I still meant every word that I said all those years ago and I meant what I said a week ago. I love you Olivia.” Olivia rolled her eyes at this comment finishing the rest of her glass. She turned her back to the railing watching Ella and Amanda. Amanda was spinning Ella around causing her dress to fly high in the air. A broad smile was across Ella’s face and Amanda’s head was thrown back in laughter. As she watched the scene unfold in front of her she realized that she was looking at the life she had always dreamed about when she was talking to Elliot that night. She had a family. A loving wife and four beautiful kids. She was happy.
She turned towards Elliot, handing off her glass, “And I am going to dance with my wife.”
Elliot watched as Olivia waltzed over to the blonde woman dancing with Ella. He vaguely remembered her from his stints in the precinct but what happened next he could have never guessed. Olivia extended her hand out to the blonde woman who blushed as she took it. When Olivia pulled her close she gave her a kiss before pulling Ella close to them as well. For a moment Elliot watched the scene unfolding in front of him. He had never really noticed how much of Olivia’s life he had actually missed until the differences were glaring right in front of him.
As he walked over to the bar to grab a drink he ran into Ella. She smiled at him and his heart dropped. He missed that smile and now that she was older she looked almost exactly like Olivia. Not only had her looks changed, but she seemed more confident now too. His goddaughter was now an adult and he didn’t know a single thing about her.
“I forgive you,” Ella blurted out.
“What are you talking about?”
“I forgive you for shooting me and for leaving Mom and I suddenly,” Ella told him simply, “I leave for London next week and I just needed to get that off my chest before I left.”
Elliot looked at her stunned, “You know I’m….”
“Ella! Come dance with your moms! This will be our last chance before you leave!” The blonde called and Ella rushed off to join them.
Elliot watched as Ella crashed into the two women’s arms. With one final fleeting glance, he walked back to the entrance without saying a word to anyone. He had missed his chance. It was as simple as that.
——
Ella stood outside the security line her hands shaking. She turned to look at her family one final time. Olivia was barely holding back her tears as she held onto Noah’s hand. Noah was holding onto his favorite elephant stuffed animal to his chest pacing from foot to foot. Jesse was still sniffling from crying on their way to the airport. Amanda was next to her eyes bloodshot red tears still falling down her face. On her hip was Billie who was clinging to her mother’s neck unsure of why everyone was so upset. Ella tried to memorize every detail of the people she loved the most. This was the longest she was going to be away from home.
“I… I don’t think I can do this. This was a mistake,” Ella stammered.
Amanda was the first one to move wrapping Ella in her arms, “Yes you can baby. We are only ever a phone call away.”
“Yes and you can call any time. Day or night it doesn’t matter,” Olivia said rubbing the small of Ella’s back before kissing her cheek.
“And we will come see you for Christmas!” Noah added excitedly.
“You won’t forget me right?” Ella whispered to no one in particular.
“Never!” Jessie screamed causing everyone to laugh.
Ella gave one final hug and kiss to every member of her family and then headed through security. When she was through she turned and gave one final glance back at her small tribe. They all waved their final goodbyes and Olivia blew one last kiss. Ella snatched it from the air and shoved it in her pocket winking before turning the corner to find her gate. Once she found a spot to wait she pulled out her phone double checking all of the confirmation emails she had been given. As she read them over she read the name of her guide and formulated a story of who she would be. Penelope Garcia. The person who was going to guide her through the biggest change in her life.

Ch: 1: A Runaway.
Sirens blared in a cold New York street. Flashes of light from firefighters, ambulances and police cars joined together in the street, lighting the buildings on both sides of the street. Most of them were business buildings but the few that were apartments had their windows opened to see below.
Unfortunately, there was a victim being brought into an ambulance. The girl was unconscious but it wasn't too surprising due to the state she was in. Someone hurt her with passion.
"Ma'am? Just wait here, a paramedic will be with you shortly," a cop was telling a second woman, a ginger, on the scene. Said woman was holding a towel around her palm to slow down the blood of a cut. Her dark brown eyes flickered from the cops to the ambulances, scared of what would come next. She knew the process all too well but the moment wasn't the right one.
As soon as the cop turned her attention away, the ginger made a getaway. Due to the gravity of the situation, it was easy slipping away from the scene. The cops hadn't finished taping off the crime scene and by the time someone figured out she was missing, she was already in a cab.

Sergeant Olivia Benson and Detective Amanda Rollins reported to the crime scene only twenty minutes after the arrival of the others. By that time, the victim had already been taken to Bellevue hospital. Once the Sergeant got word of what happened in a brief minute, she went off on the attentive cop in question.
"You're telling me we had a witness who saw everything and you lost her?" Olivia Benson had been at the job for about fourteen years and yet somehow she was still stunned sometimes by the mistakes she saw in her line of work.
The cop stammered while he made an excuse for his lack of attention but Olivia knew it was pointless to even argue it. The mistake was done.
"You know what, just tell us you got a name from her."
"I didn't," the cop hated his situation at the moment. "It was a rush and -and it's my first night on the field."
"What did she look like?" Amanda tried another way to get some valuable information. The cop looked too green to hassle for the mistake.
"Uh, dark orange hair…" the cop thought hard for a moment, "Dark brown eyes. Baggy clothes. She was wearing a baggy green jacket. Um...she had a purse but she took that I guess. And she had wound on her palm." The last detail pulled both women's attention. The cop realized he should have started with that. "I-I guess the perp must have cut her or something. We gave her a cloth in the meantime."
"Great, and you still let her get away," Olivia mumbled to herself after jotting down the description. "Thanks."
As she and Amanda walked off, the blonde detective thought about something. "If she had a cut - a stab wound…"
"Then she had to have gone to a hospital," Olivia said for she had thought the same thing too.
While their victim underwent her treatment - remaining unconscious for the entire duration - the detectives and Sergeant put all their focus on getting as much evidence as they could from the scene. A decent amount of that time was also put into finding the missing witness who turned out to be the only witness.
"Our victim-" Detective Nick Amaro was pinning a photograph of their rape victim on their pinboard, "-Hayley Connors, is still under but we do have the obvious evidence of a violent attack. CSU found blood at the scene but so far it only matches that of Hayley's."
"Yeah, but it corroborates with the story of the knife used to cut our missing witness," Detective Fin Tutuola, or Fin, reminded them. "But let me guess, knife hasn't been recovered yet?"
Detective Sonny Carisi's languid hand gesture was enough to answer. "If only it were that easy, huh?"
"You should know that by now," Detective Munch added on with the same sarcasm.
Amanda scoffed from her seat at the table. Her attention was on her computer screen where a footage of a hospital ER room was streaming. "I may have a view on the witness, though.
"Hey, Liv?" Fin called their temporary Sergeant from her office. "Amanda may have the witness!"
Olivia came in a hurry to see the footage along with the others. Amanda replayed the specific time where a ginger in a green, baggy coat arrived at an ER reception desk. She was still holding the cloth the cop mentioned she'd been given at the scene.
"Definitely her," Amanda concluded once she checked over the description they had of the woman.
"She looks familiar," Olivia's admission came as a surprise to the detectives. She met their curious gazes with confused expression. "I don't know who she is but...the face…"
The footage didn't exactly show the woman all too well but it was enough to get the case moving. Still getting that brief familiar vibe, Olivia decided to go to the hospital herself, along with Nick, to see what they could figure out about the woman.

"Yes, I remember her," a nurse at the ER reception of the Lenox Hill Hospital nodded her head after Nick showed her the photograph of the ginger woman. "Poor thing came with a slashed palm."
"Great, did you get her name? Her address?"
The nurse gave a kind smile and shook her head. "Sorry Detectives, I'm not at liberty to give you that information."
"It's Sergeant, first of all," Olivia set her hands on her hips and sternly looked at the woman, "And second of all, this woman is a material witness for our rape case. Besides, she was hurt too and odds are it was by the same perp so she needs to speak with us."
The nurse looked around the room, clearly in a conflict. "I can't give you the address because she didn't put one down."
Nick and Olivia exchanged glances with each other. This mysterious woman was turning out to be more of a hassle than previously thought.
"She didn't put one down?" Olivia repeated. "And you didn't notice that?"
"We were a little more preoccupied with her state," the nurse said, about to elaborate when Nick cut in.
"Give us her name then. Now, please."
The nurse sighed but ultimately obliged. "She wrote down Montserrat Novak on the paperwork."
Olivia raised an eyebrow. "That was her name?" the nurse nodded her head, definitely looking sure of it. Behind her, both Nick and Amanda exchanged knowing glances. "Did she say anything else? Where she was coming from?"
"No, she was just here for the slash," the nurse replied.
"Okay…" Olivia gave her thank you and turned away, but even her walking pace had picked up in an unusual stride.
"Hey, Liv, you think what we're thinking?" Nick had to ask as they exited the building.
"I knew she looked familiar," Olivia said, though neither Nick nor Amanda wasn't sure if it had been the answer to his question or if she'd just been talking to herself.

"Detective Montserrat Novak from the Homicide division in Queens," Olivia pulled up the photograph of the familiar ginger woman for the rest of the squad to see. "She also happens to be a cousin of one of our previous ADAs: Casey Novak."
"Who's now Manhattan's Homicide ADA," Fin nodded.
"She was our witness?" Sonny raised an eyebrow. The mysterious detective seemed too put together to be such a mess for a witness.
"Yeah," Olivia took a seat at the edge of the table, arms crossed.
"And you know her how…?" Nick asked the winning question everyone was thinking about.
"I don't know her," Olivia clarified first. "I knew of her."
"Casey never mentioned she had a family member on the job," Munch leaned back against his chair, eyes examining the photo of Detective Novak. "They don't look alike."
"If you guys haven't met then...what?" Amanda shrugged. "Did Casey talk about her or something?"
"Almost nine months ago, Montserrat-" Olivia pointed at the screen, "-was set to be my replacement at SVU after I took the Sergeant's test."
"My partner?" Nick immediately took interest at that moment. Olivia gave another nod.
"Clearly she didn't make it or else I wouldn't be here," Sonny smirked. His transfer papers were put in faster after the spot before him opened up. Now he knew why.
"What a shame," Fin's joke was met a playful roll of eyes from the new detective.
"So where is she, then?" Munch asked. "Back at Homicide?"
"I have no idea," Olivia got up from the table, unfolding her arms to gently graze her fingers over the table. "She had all the paperwork to transfer - she looked like the right candidate - but then she just retracted. There was never an explanation."
"Should we start making calls to Homicide?" Amanda wondered as she closed her laptop.
"Why bother when we can go straight to the family. Let's just ask Casey," Finn wondered what the ADA would have to say about this once they informed her.
"At this point, it might just be easier," Munch agreed on the tactic.
"It is," Olivia nodded and started heading out.
"Wait a minute," Sonny called to the woman, only stopping her for a second, "Shouldn't we call Barba then first?"
"Why? I'll get him there anyways," Olivia shrugged and continued on out.
"A Sergeant and a fellow ADA to deal with?" Finn turned to his co-workers, unable to keep his smile from showing. "I'd like to see what poor Casey does."
~ 0 ~
Olivia was set to find Casey and have a civilized conversation about the situation. She honestly didn't think they'd need to subpoena Montserrat, but if things got to that point then she wouldn't hesitate.
This was exactly what her conversation with SVU's ADA, Rafael Barba, sounded like. He was surprised to find their missing witness was related to a fellow co-worker.
"I think Casey will understand our situation and she'll get us in contact with Montserrat," Olivia said for the third time since she got to Rafael's office.
"It sounds like your assuring yourself," he noticed.
She stopped pacing in front of his desk to momentarily look at him. "I worked with Casey for years. She was our longest ADA so she knows exactly what our situation looks like."
"Right," Rafael agreed on that matter, but he then added, "However, I doubt any of her cases had her own family as a witness. If this Montserrat purposely ran from the scene it doesn't exactly give good credibility."
"We don't know what happened nor why she did," Olivia pointed him to stop. "But she's a Detective - and she wanted to transfer to SVU - so she should be willing to help."
"Exactly, she should be willing to help us. But she ran off," Rafael didn't think he needed to explain more than that. "Exactly what kind of Detective does that?"
"You start asking those questions, we lose the case even before we step into the courtroom," Olivia warned. She checked her phone for the time and saw it was past noon. "Casey's lunch hour ended, right?"
"Yeah," Rafael got up from his chair and levelled a look with the woman. "I have to warn you Olivia, Casey might just protect her cousin."
"I know Casey and she wouldn't. You know Casey and you know she wouldn't," Olivia started heading for the office doors. "Plus, if we tell her that her cousin is our only witness in this case, she'll be more than willing to help us."
"She better because as of now, Detective Novak would be the only one who could tell us what happened," Rafael bitterly said as he followed Olivia. It irked him this runaway Detective was the only person who could make or break his case. "Hayley doesn't remember-"
"-yeah, because she was drugged," Olivia reminded him.
"True and I'll be sure to mention that in court. But the point still stands that she can't talk much about the rape if she doesn't remember."
"I know," Olivia sighed, about to retort when they both heard an ongoing argument from the hallway.
"...you know the deal…"
"Of course I do, Casey! I have to appear but - would you stop walking so fast!?"
"I have a meeting with a Detective-"
"-listen to me Casey!"
"Could it be that easy?" Rafael whispered to Olivia as the two continued to listen.
"Let's find out," Olivia stepped out into the hallway. As soon as they did, they spotted the familiar figure of Homicide ADA Casey Novak striding down the hall with a smaller ginger haired woman following behind her.
"I know it was wrong but I was scared!" the ginger woman was still shouting despite the attention she was getting from other people passing by. "I'm not at my best!"
"You know exactly what you need to do, Montse. They're good people-"
"-but it doesn't change my situation!"
Casey whirled around and met the woman's gaze. "You know what you need to do. And if you don't, I'll bring you in myself." She left the woman with that and headed into her office.
Olivia was not going to give the woman a chance to flee again. "Scuse me?" she started for the woman in a hasty pace. "Detective Montserrat Novak? I'm Sergeant Olivia Benson and I need to…" but Olivia trailed off when Montserrat slowly turned around.
There was one detail no one had bothered to give the SVU squad.
Montserrat Novak was pregnant.

“Wait your father?” you asked, trying to listen to Nick as he explained how his morning was going. For some reason, your phone was breaking up so you only heard parts of what he was saying. You were also trying to get dressed for the day, so it was a little difficult to listen to him as you changed.
“Yeah, he just showed up. Wanted to go to lunch. Tells me he’s getting married.”
“Getting married? To who?”
“I don’t know. I told him I don’t want to meet her.”
“Oh Nick, I’m so sorry.” You heard him sigh on the other line. “Do you want to talk about it? Maybe later tonight?”
“No, I think I’m gonna go see my mom. Thanks, though.”
“Of course. Keep me posted.”
“Uh huh,” he said before hanging up.
“What did Nick want?” Rafael asked, still laying half naked in bed. You tossed your phone on the bed and finished pulling up your pants.
“His dad is back in town.”
“Oh nice,” he said, putting his hands behind his head.
“Not really. He’s a huge asshole.” Rafael nodded in understanding. “I didn’t know him for that long. I think we met maybe once or twice. Nick’s always had a problem with him.”
“Why?”
“He’s an asshole.”
“Yeah, I got that.” You sighed. You had been searching for a particular shirt, but you had forgotten which one you were looking for. “I’m sorry.” You looked back at Rafael and he cocked an eyebrow at you.
“Why?”
“I need to go see him.”
“Okay,” he said, getting out of bed. “I understand.”
“Thank you.” You kissed him softly.
“Call me later.”
“I will.” You quickly changed and left for the precinct. Nick had just gotten back from his mother’s house. You were sitting at his desk when he came back.
“Hey,” he said, surveying the room, purposefully not making eye contact. “I thought you had the day off.” You shrugged and looked up at him.
“I wanted to see you.” He laughed, with almost no joy in it.
“Zara’s back.”
“Really? I have like a million things to give her. She could have moved into our apartment honestly.” Nick smiled, and it was genuine.
“I’m sure she’s excited to see you, too.”
“So, I’ll see if Graham wants to see her, too. A little date with her god-parents.”
“She’s gonna be busy,” he said, putting his hand on the back of his chair. You stood up. “You don’t have to move.” Again, you shrugged and sat down on the edge of his desk. You motioned your hand and he sat down.
“Why is Zara gonna be busy?”
“She’s gonna be a flower girl in Nicholas’s wedding.”
“Jesus.”
“Yeah,” he said, sighing.
“I’m sorry.” He shrugged. “I’m here for you, you know,” you said, kicking his leg softly. He smiled up at you.
“I know.” He touched your knee.
You hung out with Nick in the office for the entire day. You got caught up on work, and talked with him when he wanted. He didn’t want to very much. You texted Zara, asking her how long she was here and when she could meet up. She was very excited, and you were, too.
Sonny said his goodbyes to the two of you, and just as Nick was talking to Maria, and trying to convince you to go home, he got another phone call.
“Hey, Zara.” His face immediately paled as he picked up the phone. He stood up and started walking towards the door. “Alright, just tell me what’s going on.” You raced after him, worried for Zara, too.
Nick floored it all the way to the nightclub. He barely stopped his car as he ran in. You followed as he called for Zara. Eventually, the eight year old came running out with her grandma.
“Daddy!”
“Zara!”
“Daddy! It was scary.”
“Are you okay? Que paso?” You ran your hand through Zara’s hair, and she smiled up at you a little.
“One minute, everyone was dancing. Then all hell broke loose,” Nick’s mother said. Nick nodded and looked at you.
“Take them home, please.”
“Nick.”
“Please,” he said, touching your arm gingerly. You sighed and took Zara’s hand. “Take them home.”
“Call me,” you said.
“I have a huge box of presents for you,” you said, laying on top of the bed with Zara. She smiled excitedly at you as you both colored in separate coloring books.
“Daddy says you have a new boyfriend.”
“He did?” you asked with a smile. She giggled. “I do. He’s a lawyer.”
“Daddy hates lawyers.” You laughed along with her.
“I know. But this one is nice.”
“Is he handsome?”
“Very.”
“Are you two gonna get married?” You laughed.
“Maybe. What about you? Do you have any boyfriends?” She laughed.
“No way! Boys are gross.”
“Yes, they are.” Your phone chimed and you looked down to see a text from Nick, that he was on his way home. “Hey, Zar, it’s time for bed.”
“No, I wanna wait for Daddy.”
“I’m sorry, sweetheart. You’ll see him tomorrow.”
“What about you?”
“What about me?” you asked, as you tucked Zara into bed. You sat down on the edge and looked at her.
“When will I see you again?”
“Before you go home. I promise. I still gotta give you your gifts.” She smiled and snuggled into her pillow. “Goodnight.”
“Goodnight, Y/N.” You flipped the light off as you walked back downstairs. Cesaria was exhausted and went to bed almost immediately after you came home. Nick walked in a couple of minutes later, and you rushed towards him.
“What are you still doing here?”
“Watching your family. What’s happening?”
“Go home,” he said softly. “You don’t need to be here.”
“I want to be. What’s happening?”
“Nicholas hit Gabriella.”
“His fiance?”
“Yeah.”
“Did she tell you that?” He nodded as he walked into the kitchen. He took a beer from the fridge and downed most of it.
“You don’t have to hang around.”
“Shut up. I know this has to be hard on you- and no, don’t give me that shit. I know you, Nick. Better than most.” He sighed and took another swig.
“I know. And I appreciate it. I’m just going to go to sleep. Liv told me to stay out of it. I promise, I’m fine. Go home. Barba hasn’t seen you all day.”
“He can manage.” He leaned in and kissed your forehead.
“Thank you. I love you. Goodnight,” he said, walking towards the stairs. You smiled and walked to the door. You both looked back at each other.
“Goodnight,” you said.
Rafael was in bed when you came home. He had a book in his hands, and didn’t notice you until you kicked your shoes off and they clamored across the floor.
“You been in bed all day?” He shook his head with a slight smile.
“I figured you’d be home earlier.”
“Yeah, sorry about that,” you said, as you continued to get undressed. “It was kind of a shit show with Nick’s dad.” He put his book down as you crawled in bed next to him.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” You shrugged and rested your head on his shoulder.
“I’m sure you’ll hear it all tomorrow. I sort of just want to sleep.”
“Okay.” He leaned over and turned the light out, bathing you in darkness. “Goodnight.” He rolled over and turned from you.
“Goodnight.”
The next morning, Rafael seemed a little happier. He was going down to the precinct with you because today was the day that Nick’s father was going to be interviewed. After getting dressed, and grabbing a quick bite to eat, you walked out the door.
“I thought we were supposed to stay separated from this case,” you said, looking up at Olivia in confusion. Nick was sitting at his desk across from yours, and was looking up with the same look.
“Well, we want Nick to, but we think, if we have you in there he might be more keen to tell the truth.”
“He barely knows me,” you said.
“He’ll remember you,” Nick said firmly. You looked over at him and he shrugged. You frowned at him and nodded.
“Okay? Who am I going with?”
“Finn.” You nodded and met Finn in the hallway outside of the interrogation room.
“So she did convince you.”
“Yep.”
“Alright, let’s go.” He opened the door, and you walked into the room. Nicholas Amaro was sitting at the table with his lawyer, a grim look on his face. That changed a little when he saw you. His frown turned more smug.
“Y/N, Nicky’s girl,” he said, pointing at you. You smiled politely and sat down.
“Actually, it’s Detective Dodds. This is Detective Tutuola.” Finn sat down next to you. “So, let’s talk about what happened.”
“Like my client already told you,” D’Angelo said, leaning forward. “He was defending his fiance.”
“Right, and that’s what she said, too, but we can’t find one witness that saw Javier go downstairs.”
“Drunk people in a dark chaotic room - what do they know?”
“We did find witnesses who saw you putting ice on your knuckles after coming upstairs.” Nicholas tilted his head and shrugged.
“I was defending my fiance. I mean, he had it coming to him. You know what I’m talking about,” he said, looking at you.
“No,” you said, shaking your head. “I know that Gabriella has a fractured skull and a busted lip.”
“She’s not pressing charges,” D’Angelo said.
“It was the night before our wedding, tensions were running high. You’re telling me that things never got out of hand with you and Nick?” You stood up, and walked to one of the mirrors. Leaning against the wall, you took a deep breath and looked at Nicholas.
“Nope.”
“Come on, he’s just like his father.” You shook your head. “The two of you didn’t even make it a week past your engagement.”
“Alright,” Finn said, “Let’s get back to what happened that night.”
“Come on. I’d never hit a woman.”
“All do respect. No witnesses, she’s not pressing charges, we’re done.”
“Domestic violence is a must arrest.”
“But it’s not a must charge,” D’Angelo said, standing up. You sighed and watched as the two men walked out. You looked over at Finn and he frowned. He stood up and walked to the door that led into Olivia’s office. He opened it for you and you walked in to find Rafael talking with Liv. Your heart sunk and you felt sick.
“That didn’t go so well,” Liv said. You nodded, still trying to read Rafael, who was not looking at you. He was looking in Olivia’s direction but wasn’t actually seeing her.
“We see guys like this all the time. He ducks every question,” Finn said.
“He believes his own lies,” you said. Rafael blew air out of his nose, still not looking over at you.
“So what do we do now?” Finn asked.
“We prep for trial,” Rafael said. He picked up his briefcase, and walked out the door, not saying anything. Olivia and Finn looked over at you, showing some sympathy. You rolled your eyes and walked out the door.
“Hey, how’d it go?” Nick asked, leaning back in his chair. You shook your head and walked past him. The elevator was already going down, so you took the stairs. You ran down them and out onto the street.
“Rafael!” you shouted. He was looking down at his phone and turned to face you. He frowned a little as you ran to catch up with him.
“Did you run all the way down here?”
“Yes, because you walked out on me.” He sighed and continued walking towards his office. “Can we at least talk?”
“What about?” You rolled your eyes.
“You know what I’m talking about.”
“I don’t know why you didn’t tell me.”
“Because Nicholas was right. We didn’t last a week past our engagement. And I’d use the term engagement loosely.” Rafael sighed and checked his phone again.
“Okay,” he said, stopping.
“Okay?”
“I believe you. But I’m not gonna lie and say that I’m not a little bit upset about this.” He looked up at you and smiled a little. “You should get back to work.”
“Yeah, I’ll see you tonight.” He nodded and looked down at his phone again, and walked away.  You stood awkwardly for a moment before turning back towards to the precinct.
Rafael sat in Olivia’s office for the fourth time that week, looking at one of the people he wanted to see least. He watched as confusion and anger swept across Nick’s face.
“You want me to testify?” Rafael nodded and looked over at Olivia, who was beginning to try and explain things to Nick. “But last I heard, you wanted me to stay away.”
“I did, pero, tu padre, who’s even more stubborn than you are,” he replied, glaring at Nick just a bit. “Wouldn’t take a plea. He says his honor is too important.”
“Well that’s not my problem,” Nick said, standing up. Rafael clenched his jaw and fought off the urge to roll his eyes. This case was difficult enough for Nick, and he didn’t want to do anything to purposefully make it worse for him, but Nick wasn’t being much help. “Well look, there were one hundred people at that party, and I wasn’t one of them.”
“And none of them saw the fight,” Olivia said. “You’re the one who Gabriella made her outcry to, Nick.” She stood up and looked him in the eye. “You’re also the only one who can testify that it was part of a pattern.” Nick paled and stared at Olivia for a minute, taking what she just said in.
“You told him about that? Those were private conversations,” he said softly.
“It was pertinent, Nick. I had to inform.”
“Inform is right,” he said, rolling his eyes. He started walking out of the room. “You enjoying this? Huh?” he asked Rafael.
“No.” And he wasn’t. At all. “But if your father sees your name on the list, maybe he’ll plea it out.” Nick opened the door and looked back at Rafael and Olivia.
“And what if he doesn’t? I mean how do I explain that to the rest of my family?” He closed the door behind him and Olivia looked over at Rafael with a sigh. He shrugged and stood up, fixing his suit.
“Don’t worry about him.”
“I can’t help it. This has got to be awful for him.”
“I’m sure it is. But he’s got Y/N to watch over him,” he said with a little to much spite. Olivia eyed him and Rafael wished he hadn’t had said anything.
“Everything okay between you two?”
“Yeah,” he said, again, too spiteful and short.
“Do you want to talk about it?” He finished buckling up his briefcase and turned back to his friend.
“There’s nothing to talk about.” She nodded and the slightest smile started working its way across her face.
“For the record, I didn’t know they had been engaged before, either.” Rafael sighed.
“We’re fine, Liv.” She frowned at him and he smiled just a bit. “Thank you for your concern.”
“Of course.” He smiled once more before walking out the door. He was glad to be rid of Olivia’s judging eyes, and her advice she would surely continue to give. Rafael didn’t need to hear that the two of you should be talking. He knew you should be. But if you did, then you would have to face all of the problems. Right now it was just better to ignore it. Or easier.
As he walked out of the precinct, he walked past your desk where you were talking quietly with Nick. You looked up at Rafael and smiled ever so slightly. He didn’t stop, and didn’t breath until he got to the elevator.
You were ready to actually talk with Rafael, as you stood in his office. He was getting prepared for opening statements, and was currently buttoning up his shirt again. You hadn’t said anything since you came in and the suspense was suffocating.
“Rafael-” You were cut off when Carmen walked in. She smiled sympathetically at you both. She always knew everything.
“Mr. Barba, Mr. D’Angelo would like to meet with you. Immediately.” Rafael looked at her in bewilderment.
“Opening statements are in a few minutes.” She shrugged.
“Should I tell him no?”
“No. I’ll meet him in a conference room downstairs in a minute.” She nodded and shut the door behind her. “I’m sorry,” he said to you. “I guess we’ll have to talk later,” he said with a little smile. You laughed softly and nodded.
“Can I come with you?” you asked. He nodded and you followed after him, his coat in your hand. The two of you walked down to the tiny room, finding D’Angelo and Nicholas standing outside. Nicholas smiled when he saw you and you started to rethink your decision to join Rafael.
“Talk fast, Mr. D’Angelo,” Rafael said, opening the door and following everyone inside. “Opening statements are in five minutes.” You sat down at one of the chairs, still holding tightly onto Rafael’s jacket.
“Well I can’t talk as fast as you, Mr. Barba, but here goes.” You snorted softly and you thought you saw the slightest twinge of a smirk on Rafael’s face. Nicholas paced the room nervously, and you tried to ignore his gaze. “In the interest of sparing his family any more embarrassment, my client is willing to plea to a crime he didn’t commit.”
Rafael started putting on his vest as he said, “You know my office can’t accept a plea without a genuine admission of guilt.”
“Well you have no cooperating complainant. You have no eyewitnesses. I say we drop this down to a disorderly conduct, be done with it.” Rafael didn’t look amused, but still managed to crack a smile.
“Dis-con? He cracked her skull.”
“Hey, I was defending my fiance,” Nicholas said, turning to face the group.
“Please, you think some jury’s gonna believe that?” Rafael asked. You touched his sleeve softly. You loved that he never backed down from a fight, except maybe from you, but Nicholas was definitely not the man to fight with. Especially now. Nick had told you too many stories for you to think of him as anything other than dangerous.
“Well I’ll tell you what. My daughter will testify. So will my fiance,” he said with a shrug. “Am I making this up? No one saw this. Are you counting on my son? Cause there’s something you should know. He’s never had the nerve to go up against his father. Alright? He still doesn’t.” You scoffed and shook your head. Nicholas twisted his lips.
“Assault three,” Rafael said. “Sixty days in Rikers.” Nicholas laughed and D’Angelo turned to him.
“Nicholas, please. You’re looking at hard time here. Please, for the sake of your family.” You flinched when Nicholas shot up. Rafael looked at you and for the first time in the entire week you saw the softness that his eyes usually held.
“I don’t take crumbs. Especially from this,” he said, walking towards Rafael, who stared him down. “This gentleman who wears suspenders and steals women from my son.” You opened your mouth to say something but stopped yourself. Nicholas stared at Rafael for a moment, but neither of them backed down until Nicholas left. D’Angelo followed after him and you stood up.
“I’m sorry, Rafael.”
“Why?” he asked, taking the coat from your hands. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“I know, I just-”
“Don’t worry about it,” he said. “Let’s go. I want this asshole behind bars.” You smiled and walked towards the door. He opened it, and before you walked out, you kissed his temple.
“For what it matters, I like your suspenders.”
“Make it a double,” Rafael said, leaning over the bar with Nick.
“Tough day?” the other man asked.
“It’s a he-said, she-won’t-say,” he said with a sigh. “No one else saw what happened, and the jury senses all my witnesses have a grudge against your father. Thank you,” he said to the bartender.
“Do they see why?” Nick asked.
“I doubt it,” Rafael said honestly. “He’s sitting at the table, smiling at the judge, flirting with the stenographer, egging his attorney on. He’s got the whole room on his side.”
You walked in at that moment, and came up to the two men. Rafael told you that he was coming down here, and to come if you wanted. You hadn’t expected Nick to be here, though.
“Ahh, it’s the story of my life,” Nick said, leaning over the bar. You put a hand on his back as you walked up and he smiled at you. Rafael did, too, but it was more lackluster.
“I’m gonna see if they'll take a plea for harassment.”
“What a misdemeanor? He fractured her skull.”
“You and I know that, but even if you do testify, he could still walk.”
“But- What are you telling me?”
“You don’t have to do this,” Rafael said, the softness coming back into his green gaze. “I never should have asked you to testify in open court against your father.”
“Are you playing me, now?”
“No. I know what it’s like to have to face down your old man.” You looked up at Rafael, worry in your eyes. He hardly ever spoke about his father. “Mine’s dead fifteen years and my hand still curls into a fist when I think of him.” Your hand went to his back, now and he frowned at you.
“So what? He just gets to walk away? Again?” Nick was focusing on the shelf of liquor, not looking at the two of you.
“It’s your family, your call.” Nick nodded, still staring at the shelf. Rafael stood and looked at you.
“I’m gonna call a cab.”
“I’ll be there in a minute,” you said. He nodded and looked between you and Nick. He hesitated for a minute before walking out. “Nick, go home. You don’t want to be here.”
“I don’t want to be there either.”
“Go to your apartment then. You don’t need to see your family now.” He sighed and nodded, standing up straight. You looped your arm in his and walked with him outside. Rafael was standing outside, hailing a cab.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Nick said.
“You want to testify?” you asked. Rafael was in earshot and looked over.
“Yeah.” You nodded and went to hug Nick. He hugged you back tightly, squeezing your waist.
“I know how hard this is for you. I’m sorry.”
“Thanks.” You nodded. The cab pulled up for the two of you and you smiled at Nick once more. You went up to kiss his cheek.
“Goodnight, Nick. I love you, you are going to get through this,” you said. He bit his lip and smiled at you a little. You climbed into the cab after Rafael. He was staring at the window, and for the entire ten minute drive, he didn’t say anything.
You walked up the steps of your apartment in silence, and Rafael walked immediately up to the room that would be his office, once everything was finally put away. He shut the door and you sighed. The talk that you needed to have before needed to happen. It needed to happen right now. You walked up the steps and knocked on his door, even though it was your home, too.
“Come in,” he said. You swung open the door and found him shuffling through past cases and boxes of files.
“Do you have to do this right now?” you asked.
“What should I be doing? Fighting with you?” You sighed.
“Yeah.” He looked up at you, sadness filling his eyes. He took a deep breath, and held out his hand, like he was about to say his opening arguments in court.
“I know that this is hard for Nick, and I know that you two are good friends, but a lot has come out of this, and I don’t know what to think of it.”
“Okay, I realize I should have told you that we were engaged, but I promise, Rafael, it was nothing. I dated Nick on and off for about three years, and we decided that it was what everyone expected of us.”
“You still said yes.” You sighed.
“Yeah. But I also called it off.”
“Why?” he asked.
“Because Nick and I are only meant to be friends. We fought a lot, and I knew he still loved Maria. They were on when we were off.”
“Did you still love him when you broke it off?” he asked. You nodded. “Do you still love him now?”
“How could you ask me that? You know I love you.”
“I do, but I also heard you tell Nick that you love him.” You groaned and ran a hand through your hair.
“Yes. I love him. But not in the same way. Not in the way I love you. You still love Yelina and I don’t throw that in your face.” Rafael’s face fell, deeper than a frown.
“I wasn’t throwing Nick in your face.”
“Yes you do. You always do. You get upset when I hang out with Nick any time.”
“That’s not true,” Rafael said, shaking his head.
“Yes it it. You’re jealous of him.”
“I am not jealous of Nick,” he said firmly. “And things between Yelina and I are a lot different.” You scoffed and rolled your eyes.
“How is it any different? Because Nick didn’t marry one of my best friends when I was still in love with him?” Rafael clenched his jaw.
“How is this even related? We’re talking about you and Nick.”
“No. We’re talking about you and Nick,” you said. “You haven’t liked Nick since we started dating.”
“Maybe because you keep everything about him a secret,” he spat.
“Maybe I do that because you can’t handle finding out little details about him.”
“Being engaged to him is just a little detail?” Rafael asked, scornfully.
“No.”
“So you were just not going to tell me at all?”
“No.”
“So when were you going to tell me?”
“I don’t know. Not in the middle of a case where he clearly needs me.”
“Nick always needs you.”
“And that bothers you. I don’t know why. You don’t get upset when Graham needs me, or I hang out with him.”
“You never loved Graham.”
“Yes I do. I love him like I love Nick now. I don’t know why you can’t see that.” Rafael grumbled and you kicked the box near your feet. You could feel tears forming in your eyes, and you didn’t want to go any further.
“Because Graham doesn’t love you! Nick still does!” he shouted. The tears that were threatening to spill over finally did.
“Nick doesn’t still love me.” Rafael scoffed.
“You’re blind then.”
“No, you are,” you said. “You are blind and insane if you think that I love Nick. That I would ever leave you for him. You’re blind because I love you so much, Rafael, and you can’t get passed your jealousy for a man who has long been just a friend of mine.”
“You let Nick treat you like a lot more than a friend.” You shook your head and walked towards the door. You wanted to say more, but couldn’t think of the words. You slammed the door shut behind you and walked into your bedroom.
“Nick,” you said, running into him as he was leaving the courthouse. “I thought the trial just finished.”
“Yeah, and jury is already back.” You looked up at him and frowned.
“I’m sorry,” you said, touching his shoulder. He shrugged.
“Barba did what he could. My father is a liar and he’s always gonna lie. My family just lets him run the show.”
“You’re not like that,” you said. Nick sighed and you motioned to one of the benches lining the wall. You sat with him and looked at him.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be? I mean, I know this is hard for you, but-”
“No, I don’t mean about the case. Are things okay with you?” At that moment, you noticed Rafael and Olivia talking down the hallway and a pained expression must have washed over your face. “Y/N.”
“It’s nothing new from this case,” you said. “I’m fine.” Nick shoved your knee with his knee.
“We can talk about it.”
“I know. But I’m kind of tired of talking. It doesn’t usually get me anywhere.” The doors across the room opened up and Nicholas Amaro, his lawyer, fiance, and daughter all walked out. Nick stiffened up and you instinctively stood up. They walked by and didn’t say anything, until Nicholas came by.
“See, Nicky? I’m always right.”
“Okay, Mr. Amaro,” you said, standing somewhat in front of Nick, who stood up now, too.
“What are you defending him now?”
“Come on, Dad,” Sonya said, trying to urge her father along.
“Nick doesn’t need defending, but yeah I’m gonna stand by him.”
“Where was that attitude at the engagement?”
“Alright, Nicholas,” Nick said, cutting in front of the two of you. “You got what you wanted. You don’t even know what you’re talking about. Get out of here.”
“Nicky, I’m still your father, I still-”
“Go.” He sighed and swaggered out with his group. Nick looked down at you and then across the room, to where Rafael and Olivia used to be. They were now a few feet away, and even he could see the tension between you two.
“You okay?” he asked.
“Yeah. You?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m sorry,” you said, touching his forearm quickly before leaving. You walked down the steps, waiting for the moment that Rafael would call to you. The moment that he would stop you and apologize and tell you how much he loved you. He didn’t, and the further you walked, he still didn’t come to you.
You made it all the way to your apartment before you realized you needed to go back to work, anyhow. You took a deep breath and pulled out your phone, hoping for at least a message from Rafael. There wasn’t one, so you decided to leave your own. He didn’t usually answer his cell phone while he was at work, unless it was for work, and he wasn’t going to answer your calls anyhow now, so you knew it would go to voicemail.
“Hey, it’s me. I’m gonna stay at Graham’s for a while. I don’t know. I don’t know what to do right now. I don’t know where we go from here. Maybe we need a break. Make sure to water the plants.”
