Life Lens - Entry 09
Resilience Shines Bright Hey there, fellow readers! Today, as a proud Filipino born and raised in the Philippines, I find myself in the midst of an unexpected power outage caused by a wild typhoon throwing a party outside with gale-force winds. Our province here is waving the “Signal Number 2” flag, and I bet there’s an electric post somewhere having a not-so-great time right now. But hey, no…

Module 3: CULTURE, ETHNICITY AND PERSONALITY
This module deepened my understanding of how various factors contribute to our sense of self. I learned that culture, ethnicity, and personal characteristics all play a role in shaping our identities. However, what stood out to me the most was the significant impact of culture on the development of selfhood.
Culture provides a collective identity by sharing beliefs, norms, values, customs, traditions, symbols, and language within our community. This fosters a sense of belonging and connection, influencing how we think, act, and view the world. For example, in Philippine culture, the value of "kapwa" emphasizes interconnectedness and collective identity (Santiago, 2020). It encourages considering the needs and welfare of others and prioritizing shared goals and cooperation over personal desires. This cultural value shapes individuals' self-perception and guides their behavior.
Moreover, culture sets expectations and assigns social roles, significantly influencing how we present ourselves and interact with others. For instance, our culture expects to show respect toward the elderly and individuals of higher social status (Scroope, 2017). This cultural expectation affects our behavior and interactions, as we may choose not to challenge or speak back to the elderly out of respect. These cultural expectations shape our selfhood and guide our social interactions.
In conclusion, culture plays a pivotal role in shaping our identity. It molds our self-understanding, influences our thoughts and actions, and guides our interactions through transmitting values, beliefs, and norms. Understanding the impact of culture on selfhood allows us to appreciate the complexity of human identity and the role that cultural influences play in shaping who we are.

Book Of The Week No.36 Alternative Alamat: Myths and Legends From the Philippines Edited by Paolo Chikiamco Actual Rate: 8.5/10 Favorite Line: "To exist, one must be born into pain." Actual Review: Alternative Alamat is a folk fiction originally published in 2014 and republished 2022 by Tuttle Pub, internationally. The book is comprised with compendium of 12 Filipino myths and lores that are retold for modern readers, all edited by Paolo Chikiamco. I really appreciate the variety of stories that are in this compilation because it really represents the roots of us, Filipinos and how are culture expounds about love, life, death, heroism, divinity and impermanence. Thanks to #PaengPH2022, I was able to have my mind collected and settled for reading. I was reading this on my room with heavy rain and winds on the outside. I believe that's the best way you could ever feel and read folklores. Some of the stories have weak points, that is in my personal opinion, best believe that this book is created to initiate the mainstreaming of Filipino culture/stories. My favorites are "The Last Full Show", "The Alipin's Tale" & "Keeper of my Sky". 1.) I was mystified by Alexandra Trese's passion(?) for decrypting Filipino folklorian mysteries. I am now planning to watch Trese on Netflix. 2.) I love how the imagination of the writers really used the key occurences in our history to tweak it into some spin-off conspiracy. Like whi would have thought that Lapu-lapu, Bernardo Carpio and Maria Makiling would meet. 3.) I love how this is written in a very sci-fi/fantasy way. The prose narrative really took me somewhere and a sad tale is what I have got. :(((( The thing about this book is that each of these 12 stories somewhat stood on their own. I never really wanted to stop reading it even though you can read a story and just get back when you wanted because I cannot stop to be mystified by the creativity of these Filipino... On Saturday 10•15 I had the honor of returning to the Magkaisa Conference (after a three year pause) for the 20th anniversary event, to give two career presentations about my 22 years as a working tattoo artist. I love giving these talks, and I have done them many times over the years. I especially love doing the Magkaisa (“unity”) conference because it gives me tremendous pride to connect with other Filipinos in the community who are making a difference for young Filipino students who are simultaneously navigating two different cultures in a changing society. I love being an example of a viable “unconventional” career, which, if you know Filipinos, isn’t generally encouraged (shout out to all the nurses!! 🤍)-I was lucky that my parents recognized my abilities and encouraged me, and it means a lot to be able to pay it forward a bit by encouraging these young’uns 🥰 I’m also so proud of my peers who organized and contributed to Magkaisa, especially my amazing former Chula Vista High classmates-turned-educators @ricardo.cooke @amamasuy and @dr.josafat - this is some deep cultural circle of life stuff and I’m all about it. Stepping into the Tutuban Center is like stepping into a page of Manila's vibrant past. This historic site, once the central hub of the Philippine rail transport system, stands as a testament to the country's enduring spirit. The interior architecture mirrors the cultural aesthetics of the era with steel columns adorned with intricately decorated capitals, a style reflecting the tastes and standards of the time. These features are not just ornamental but a statement of the craftsmanship and engineering prowess of the era. #tutubancenter #historicalpast #culturalheritage #technical #sophistication #filipinoartisans #heritagewalk #heritagerailway #architecture #heritagehouse #tourism #railway #station #railwaystation #philippines #filipino #architecturephoto #manila #pinas #pinasmuna #wheninmanila #historicalstructure #historicalarchitecture #filipinoculture #engineeringmarvel #craftsmanship — view on Instagram https://scontent-iad3-2.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.2885-15/348458389_1410266602849003_448069654064644513_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=8ae9d6&_nc_ohc=snyJoFE5xtwAX-AtSep&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.cdninstagram.com&edm=ANo9K5cEAAAA&oh=00_AfC7EYLdYSWz4ci-atNI05ngPLGP0505Rw_i6_18bg5RqQ&oe=6470EA67

For those who are asking to post and share curios about this tradition instrument about on kulingtang and also sami @samiyusuf likes my comment last week here it is Here in our country Philippines 🇵🇭 I just want to share everyone to this Filipino culture art instrument in maranao / mindanao region is called “Kullingtang” *on the picture* Kulintang Another well-known Filipino instrument, the natives of Meranao, Tausug, and Maguindanao take a lot of pride and joy with these. The Kulintang is a set of 5 to 9 pieces of gongs that vary in size and sound. They’re aligned horizontally next to each other, usually on a rack, and are arranged in order of their pitch. The gong with the lowest pitch is placed on the players left side and two wooden sticks are used to hit the gongs to make sounds. They were traditionally made with bronze, but since the Second World War, most of the gongs are made with brass. The frame or rack that the gongs are placed in are often made with wood or bamboo and are decorated with intricate designs and rich color. The Kulintang is usually played for entertainment during festivals, weddings, and healing ceremonies. Also is a modern term for an ancient instrumental form of music composed on a row of small, horizontally laid gongs that function melodically, accompanied by larger, suspended gongs and drums. As part of the larger gong-chime culture of Southeast Asia, kulintang music ensembles have been playing for many centuries in regions of the Eastern Indonesia, Southern Philippines, Eastern Malaysia, Brunei and Timor Brunei. Its importance stems from its association with the indigenous cultures that inhabited these islands prior to the influences of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity or the West, making Kulintang the most developed tradition of Southeast Asian archaic gong-chime ensembles. #samiyusuf #thesoundsthatmoveus x #spiritualsunday #spiritique #culture #musicalculture #filipinoculture #filipino #mystique #instrument #traditionalart #traditional #traditionculture #traditionalmusic #traditionalvibes #mindfulness #spiritual #spirituality #cultura #filipino #southeastasia #artculture #SpiritualVibe #spiritualtribe https://www.instagram.com/p/Ccu-O9IpaeB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Bakit Masaya Maging Pilipino?
