And here it is at last! The Gravity Falls Multi-Artist Lyric Comic tribute to the Stan Twins, "Trouble"!

Sloooowly cracking through the last of my Stanuary prompts!! I swear I’ll get to them (and Forduary!) eventually.

I didn’t quite get the effect I was hoping for but I think it’s pretty close! I hope you like it :))

EDIT: Had a play with the multiply layer over the image to see if I could use contrast to make the layers stand out more and I’m pretty happy with it! Makes me with I’d gone for more of a cracked mirror effect, though as it made me realise just how wonky those light lines would be, haha.

I feel like when we criticize Filbrick Pines, we tend to focus more on how he kicked Stanley out, and don’t acknowledge enough how he only seemed to give a shit about Stanford because he thought Stanford was going to make a bunch of money. Like I know people have talked about it, but I feel like it tends to more often get overlooked when being compared to what he did to Stanley.

These two aspects of Filbrick together paint him as a father who only cared if his children could benefit him. They’re not bothering him and generally staying out of his way? They’re fine, legally his responsibility too so it’s better that he just doesn’t give a shit. One has the potential to be extremely successful and make a bunch of money? Suddenly he’s “impressed” and excited (whatever this man’s way of expressing excitement is). The other has now ruined the chances of the former getting into a college where he could be successful, and has now prevented the former from “being our ticket out of this joint”? That son is now not allowed to be part of the family at all.

He’s not impressed when they’re are just being themselves, he only cares when it benefits him, and if they cause him any problems, they’re out of the picture.

To preface this, I’m not saying what Ford did was a good thing, but it was an understandable one. I’m talking about the night Stan got thrown out. First off, Ford did not know Stan was going to get thrown out. He didn’t even know where Stan would be or who would be near him. Maybe if their father wasn’t an asshole they could have actually talked it out. But nope, he just threw Stan out.

Secondly, Stan didn’t help the situation, I know that wasn’t his intent and he didn’t deserve what happened to him. But immediately bringing up the adventuring was not a great idea. Once again, I know these two broken tea cups suck at communication.

Third, I’d be pretty mad if someone took away my only chance to make my dad proud of me. Filbrick had this awful habit of treating his sons disproportionally. To the point where one thought he had to be perfect and the other thought he would never be perfect.

So basically what I’m saying is, it’s Filbricks fault and he can go suck on a rock. Not a pretty one either.

Both Stan and Ford could have handled the situation better, that’s true.

Weird Gravity Falls question:

As fans, we’re all aware that Filbrick sucked as a dad.

But do Stan and Ford understand that?

It seems obvious to us outside viewers, but I don’t exactly recall any comments by either senior Pines twin that would suggest they have connected those dots. I believe it’s fairly normal for children of abusive, neglectful or just simply bad parents to think their parent’s behavior was normal or that they deserved it or whatever, and in addiction to not being able to remember a moment where they admit their dad sucked, they certainly have both internalized his words.

Ford continued to pursue his education and was obsessed with academic excellence, as that seemed to be the one and only thing that made his father show him any kind of appreciation.

Stan continued to obsess over money, as his dad told him that was the only way he was allowed to return home. And let’s not forget his comment in the finale “dad was right, I am a screw up”

But again, and please please correct me if I’m wrong, I can’t think of anything either of them has said that criticizes their father’s actions. There’s the comment that he “wasn’t easily impressed” which I think more than anything, serves more as an excuse for his actions. Heck, in the flashback of Stan taking boxing lessons, I felt that whole scene was framed as Filbrick being a good dad, personally, I thought he was a good dad up until A Tale of Two Stans.

Idk I guess I just always assumed that after several decades they started to understand that Filbrick wasn’t a great dad, but it’s perfectly realistic for neither of them to have come to that conclusion, and frankly, the tiny bits of evidence from the show support this being the case.

I rambled a bit here, but what do you all think? Did I forget a moment that proves they do see their dad wasn’t a good dad? Do you think they have processed that part of their childhoods?
