A well deserved gyudon dinner going into the weekend. Simple joys.

Years ago, before the pandemic, I would go to Megamall every Friday after work to check out new comics at Filbar's. More often than not I would treat myself to a gyudon dinner at Yoshinoya afterward. It was my most favorite part of the workweek. Problem was, Megamall was not on my way home, and the detour I had to take would always cost me precious hours caught in the notoriously heavy and maddening Ortigas Avenue traffic. But seldom did I complain.

Now, such inconvenient detour is no longer needed, as both Filbar's and Yoshinoya already have branches in Cubao where I take my ride home. Though I stopped collecting comics at the height of the pandemic, it's nice to have a Filbar's branch that I can easily visit every time the urge to buy the occasional TPB hits me. Similarly, it's nice that I can now enjoy my favorite gyudon meal without going all the way to Megamall. These are like answered prayers to me -- I am actually amazed at how it all happened.

Cracked open that Pablo Escobar book today. Will see how it rolls.

[The Keihancarl Diaries: February 18, 2023]

Hi everyone, Keihancarl here. Here's my first mall-hopping trip for 2023, at the North.

I decided to wear (mostly) all black, except for the socks and my shoes, and left the house at exactly 1:00 PM. I'm expecting traffic along the way, as per Google Maps. Of course, there's always a possibility of taking a shortcut just in case. Yeah, but the UV Express head back to Commonwealth Avenue via Atherton, so I’ll have to deal with the traffic for about fifteen minutes.

I get to see the MRT-7 trains parked along the Tandang Sora-Technohub area. Also, the Citimall in Philcoa is now closed (pending demolition), probably to give way to MRT7 University Avenue station. I did get a glimpse of the (under construction) Metro Manila Subway at the Mindanao Avenue intersection. A portion of North Avenue near Elliptical Road is undergoing widening. I wasn’t able to take pics though.

I reached SM City North EDSA a quarter before 3:00 PM. They’re having a mall wide sale at the moment, so I’m expecting a crowd of shoppers in some parts of the mall, particularly at the City Center (main mall area).

I decided to have a late lunch at Hot Star Chicken. After that, I checked a few shops at The Block and North Towers, including Fully Booked, Decathlon, and Filbar’s Multiverse.

The Food Hall opened on the fourth floor. I didn’t expect to see such unusual layout compared to the original one when it first opened fifteen years ago.

The Block is undergoing a pretty nice transformation. The fifth level is yet to be renovated, though. I also heard that the Watsons branch there is pretty huge.

Muji is opening at the North Towers very soon. They took a huge chunk of space at the second level. Probably the largest Muji branch in the country.

At the main mall area, I bought a few second hand manga books at Booksale, and then proceeded to check the annex building.

I then headed to Trinoma, passing through the Skygarden. From there, I can see the MRT North Avenue Station, which is part of the future Unified Grand Central Station.

Upon reaching Trinoma, I checked the new Landmark Supermarket first. I bought a box of Nescafe Café Creations strawberry latte coffee and a pack of fried minced garlic. After that, I headed to the Landmark Department Store, passing through the connector between the expansion and the old one.

Exiting Landmark Department Store, I only checked the Fully Booked branch inside the mall. I proceeded to Vertis North next.

The ABS-CBN Vertis Tent is now demolished. I wonder what they’ll do with the space. A possible mall expansion + office buildings perhaps?

Korea Town is no more, part of that area is now occupied by a furniture/home store, Mandaue Foam.

Japan Town is still there, but the planned Hallo-Hallo Alliance fashion shop (Tokyo Girls Collection) didn’t proceed as planned. That area is now occupied by Inspire Church.

The Fully Booked branch there is already closed. A restaurant/café, Dean And Deluca, will take over the space.

I checked a few shops, including Uniqlo and The Craft Central. Also, I see a MOS Burger pop-up store in the mall’s garden/park area.

Back at SM City North EDSA, I checked the department store. Despite having a sale, the mall was somewhat crowded. After that, I only checked the main mall’s upper and lower ground floors. I’ve already checked the main mall’s second level earlier that afternoon. I didn’t get to check the third level due to time constraints. Also, I skipped the Interior Zone.

I only had an order of takoyaki before going home. It was already 7:30 PM, so I decided to take the UV Express back to SM City Fairview. It only took me 45 minutes to get back, so I still have time to check a couple of shops there. I managed to get home before 10:00 PM.

It was an exhausting afternoon, feeling disoriented and a little tired at times. Anyway, I managed to enjoy exploring much of the three malls, though I could’ve visited Trinoma’s garden area, at least for a short while. I didn’t get to see much of that mall. Maybe I’m planning to revisit the area in the future, probably in about four months.

Well, I’m planning another mall-hopping trip in two weeks’ time. Whether my plan will push through or not will entirely depend on the situation. Anyway, that’s all for now. Until next time!

TOYCON PH 2022 – THE BIG SHOW RETURNS FOR A GRAND HOMECOMING!

For long-time TOYCON fans, it’s no secret that Voltes V holds a special place in this convention’s heart. This iconic robot has never missed a spot among the collage of colorful characters on our poster since the very start, and on special milestone years it has even become the central symbol of our show, with the huge Voltes V statue in 2016 when we first moved the convention to the SMX in Pasay, the fleet of Voltes V ships gracing our 2017 merchandise, and TOYCON’s launch of the Tamashii Nations Super Electromagnetic Machine VOLTES V, Bandai Spirits DLX Soul of Chogokin in 2020.

It’s been too long since the community of pop culture fans and collectors have come together since the pandemic struck. For many, this long drought without any gathering to celebrate our common love for all things creative, innovative and collectible has gone on way too long. And so with the effects of CoVid winding down, we just cannot wait to see you all, our fans and loyal community, finally come home.

And this year, our 19th year of putting on an onsite convention, Voltes V takes center stage again as part of a promise made by our event partner, Quiccs, back in 2019 to launch his trademark TEQ-63 in unmistakable Voltes V style only at TOYCON! And this year, in partnership with TOEI Co. Ltd. Telesuccess, we’re all set to finally launch it! At the heart of the Voltes V story is a tale of a family divided, of struggles suffered and surpassed, but ultimately a reunion of love. Which is really what TOYCON is about too, isn’t it? It is a yearly reunion, and for this year, a homecoming, as we return to the place where it all started.

BACK TO BASICS

TOYCON was started as a gathering of people of like minds, and this year as it has been every year, it is a collaboration of many to put together the biggest pop culture event in the country and in South East Asia. It is an alliance, which this year, goes back to its roots, as we put on a TOYCON which feels familiar but still is the cutting-edge show it has been which other shows have imitated but never duplicated.
