i dont even know what they could do to fix sf6's online at this point bc mandatory 3/5 set is crazyy obviously but even with non mandatory 2/3 set ppl usually finish the 2/3 and its still like far too little. i honestly think sf6 is just designed like a 5 round game and it only has 3 rounds

So I picked up Third Strike recently and I've been absolutely loving it. The fact that this pretty old fighting game from 1999 still has a passionate and active enough fanbase for me to still reliably find players around the novice skill level I'm at is really cool, and the game itself is just so perfect in so many ways. I've been playing Rivals of Aether (a plat fighter) competitively for awhile now and while it's cool and all, I've always been interested in picking up and really getting into at least one traditional fighting game. I have Tekken 7 on the PS4 and while I did like that for a bit, it was just a little bit too daunting for me for me to really pursue competitively. I also have UMVC3 but I do literally nothing there but get my ass kicked by the CPU in arcade mode with Phoenix Wright.
But Third Strike is just really fun to me, it feels more welcoming to a newer player like me (which is a miracle for a game from 1999) and the skill floor feels a lot lower while at the same time presenting me with a really high skill ceiling that I wanna strive for. Went from Yang to Dudley to Chun in quick succession and now I think I've settled on Chun. She's really fun I think and she's probably gonna make the game learning process easier. I'm not a tier snob I swear I just think she's cool
Anyways, what I really want to talk about this post is how I got into it in the first place.
youtube
It's this. It's literally just this video. I started Third Strike because of the [SPONGE GOKU SATSU]
I just randomly started listening to Akuma's theme over and over and every time is reappearing in my youtube feed I'd click on it again. Every time I played it I would instinctively lean forward in my chair like I was doing a Raging Demon, too. I was familiar with Akuma because of Tekken 7 and honestly Raging Demon edits are probably some of my favorite content from the FGC. The "loop" of me listening to it only began earlier this month but this isn't even the first time I've been losing it to this video. I think I saw it the first time like 2 years ago lmao.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eventually I reached a point where I was like "hey wait. fightcade's free and easy to set up. why not".
So thanks, Spongebob Raging Demon video, for introducing me to a bomb ass fighting game.

So today in Japan at the APM3 cup for VF5US, Sega did announce a new game! Fitting because in December, VF turns 30! However its an online version of VF3tb...for Japanese arcades?
Tumblr media
I mean the trademark was leaked a few days ago, and VF3tb is a really good game but still huh?
There is no word of it coming outside of Japan, or if it uses rollback, but you can play VF3tb and VF4/Final Tuned via Fightcade 2 with rollback. Right now. For Free.
Do it.

super locomotive is a 1982 arcade game by sega built on an early version of what became their system 1 hardware (which evolved into the master system)
youtube
it's a game where you control A Fucking Train and have to deal with Enemy Trains, Entire Fucking Bomber Planes and on occasion Entire Tanks while trying to get to the next station. for some reason. it's genuinely very technically impressive for '82, insanely fun, has a very innovative game screen (two perspectives at once splitscreen) and also the soundtrack is a rendition of YMO's rydeen which is one of the best songs ever made don't argue with me on this.
youtube
i don't even mean in the classic 80s arcade/home computer way of just recreating a song for shiggles and using it in something without giving a fuck, i'm talking fully licensed JASRAC sticker on the cabinet official rendition of rydeen
anyways sega almost never acknowledges this game it's obscure as shit and despite a decade or so of M2 desperately trying to put their mega-drive port out in random compilations, it got literally no rerelease until the mega drive mini 2 last year. (said version replaced the music with ryzeen, a song from shinji hosoe's parody band OMY which is honestly the only good way to deal with that situation besides just relicensing rydeen)
it's one of my favourite sega games and i am not being facetious. yop on MAME and play it right now. in an event of catastrophic social media failure you will find me in its fightcade lobby

games
idk what kinds you like so here’s a few
fighting: guilty gear strive (fun and flashy but very fastpaced), soul caliber 6 (top tier character customization but low playerbase), if youre into jojo then heritage for the future is free on fightcade (might have to follow a tutorial or two though)
deckbuilding: slay the spire (hard to get into though), inscryption (also leans into the next category a little, both because of vibes and the OLᓍ₴♅▩—
horror: lost in vivo (another ps1-styled silent hill inspired game but actually really good), voices of the void (kinda funny at times but gets under your skin quickly - also free if i remember right)
fps: ultrakill (cmon. i had to mention it at least once), payday 2/3 (idk shit about 3 yet so can’t vouch there but i know payday 2 was awesome and i bet even more good stuff got added since i last played), any of the borderlands games
other games that idk what to classify them as: garry’s mod, portal series if you haven’t already, no more heroes series, terraria, if you have minecraft then hypixel skyblock is nice for on-and-off playing since minions work while you’re offline
the Niche/Forgotten Stuff: dicey dungeons (a different take on the deckbuilding archetype), RUINER (cyberpunk beat-em-up that is immensely fun - major flashing lights warning though), killer7 (old actually-ps1 game made by the same dude behind the no more heroes series), hyper light drifter (and the sequel coming out soon, hyper light breaker), FURI (great boss rush game with tons of collaborating artists), fuser (now abandonware so you can get game + all dlc free online easily, plus the modding scene is crazy and only getting started)
Hell yeah and thank you anon :)
Oh yeah thank you for reminding me of inscription, I still need to get that the next time I feel like dropping some money on games.
Also gotta grab Ultrakill at some point 🙄 Damn my money worries.
I can protect you from one thing on this- DON'T BUY PAYDAY 3 YET lmao.
Bit that bullet, got my refund, at least wait until they get the servers running and if you're actually into payday (like me) maybe wait quite a bit longer because there are Core And Fundamental Issues with things like progression or how matchmaking is formatted that really need addressed- do like me and look back at 2 :P
I have gmod and a 'good enough' supply of valve games to run it (got a bundle of most of their stuff that's gmod-related) but, outside of running around a couple maps, I haven't done jack in it- gamemode or sandbox- either. Just don't know where to start tbh.
Still need to go play no more heroes 2, let alone looking into 3 or checking which side games are worth a damn (last I heard one was trash mostly released to remind people that 3 was coming but remains to be seen when I give a damn). I loved NMH 1 and have 2 on hand, just need the motivation lol
Just got done doing a terraria modded playthrough, could always do another- minecraft I've never looked into specific server/mod stuff- only really played with friends- though could be fun to play with them again, good call :P
I don't remember if I own killer7... surely I do, I have fuckin' shadows of the damned and killer is dead and all kinds of junk, I have to have that.... watch it be the one I don't- I need to actually get around to playing all these instead of being stuck in my head not entertaining my hobby 🙄
Fuser is just gonna make me sad about getting a working rock band instrument around here being a pain in the ass 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Definitely some great reminders or ideas here- thank you a lot ^^

So how was Combo Breaker?
Combo Breaker was awesome. Probably the most fun I've had in my life, actually. I got to talk to a lot of friends, new and old, and even got to be on Sajam's "Will it kill...?" where I got to be wrong as fuck about a Street Fighter 6 clip!
Tumblr media
It was kind of a surreal experience at times. I spent most of day 1 meeting up with my out-of-state friends, specifically the Ohio Vampire Savior community. Everyone was in high spirits and we got together several times to go smoke or run some sets throughout the day. I had some really close matches in my stacked as fuck Guilty Gear pool, but ultimately went 2-2. I'm satisfied with my performance though, especially in the Baiken mirror I had to fight against a much more experienced Baiken player.
I was also absolutely SERVING all 3 days
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 2 was a lot more of the same, I had 2 pools that day and was only prepared for one of them. I had a terrible time waking up for my 10am VSAV pools but I managed to put on the bat dress and tough it out anyway. Won my first match against a player whose name I knew from online fightcade tournaments, and from there I was fucking pumped!
Tumblr media
After that, I had to fight a player who I'd never taken a game off of in my life: TankTopTyphoon. He is an excellent wolf player and I somehow did the impossible and had a very close 1-2 set with him. Again, I've never taken a game off of him before so this was an accomplishment for me!
I wound up getting team killed by another Team Tengu member and got knocked out of bracket from there. I still had a lot of fun and it was great to know I'm not fucking free anymore. Vampire Savior saw me coming out 2-2.
The last pool I had was at noon for Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown. Now, first thing's first: I fucking ADORE Virtua Fighter. My problem with this game is the netcode is ass and it requires CONSTANT practice to see any notable improvement.
I had not played this game in about a year.
So I sandbagged and went 0-2. Moving on.
Going into the night, I decided to get fucking wasted and enjoy Real Vampire Hours which is basically a winner-stays-on set of first-to-2 that goes until the production team decides to go to bed. This one was real special though because for the final match of the night/morning I got to be on commentary with the guy who got me into the game in the first place. If you know, you know, but if you don't let me tell you that YetiGhettoSlang is possibly one of the most fun commentators to ever pick up the mic. Man says shit that sends my sides to the moon and I love him to death.
Tumblr media
Day 3 was another special day because it was finally time for Vampire Savior top 24 which was fucking hype. I highly recommend watching the VOD if you're at all interested in the game. I was screaming and cheering the whole time and ruined my voice in the process but, hell, it was worth it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also got into some funny shit over the weekend like running a Beyblade tournament, taking a few friends to Portillo's for the first time ever, basically just going goblin mode for a few days and forgetting about work and responsibilities for a while.
Overall, it was a great weekend like I said before. I had my best tournament record ever, something to finally be proud of. It was also the first time I'd had a week to myself in over 6 months since the death of one of my closest friends, and I feel like I was finally able to get together with some of the other people close to them and process some of that grief with them. I like to think we made this a tournament they would've been happy to see, a true SWANbo Breaker 2023.
Anyway, things kind of immediately took a turn for the worst when I got home. After 3 whole years of avoiding it, I got bodied.
Tumblr media
I'm recovering right now which is why it took so long for this post to come out but I'm also still in Hell.
I've just been sitting around waiting for my smell and taste senses to return to me and playing Fortnite while I wait for my copy of Street Fighter 6 to show up.
Stay safe out there, y'all. I love ya!

Something's coming with retro Killer Instinct! Check out http://codemystics.com/ki/ , they've got a countdown timer going, which will end at December 2, 2022 03:30:00 GMT-0:00 .
Via https://www.reddit.com/r/killerinstinct/comments/z8l6u4/popular_port_house_code_mystics_is_doing/
I'm imagining (and hoping for) a rerelease of KI1 and KI2 -- I've never actually spent much time with KI2 or KI Gold, and those games are surprisingly hard to emulate; it's possible but finicky to make them go in MAME and fightcade.
Fight on.

yo dak, me and a close friend have gotten more into fighting games over the past 5 months and i'd love to have some recs; i dunno like a LOT (he and i mostly play fighterz & skullgirls) but i think i like to gravitate towards grapplers & rekkas mostly? (i play beo & ms fortune a LOT in sg) but tbh i've really just wanted to get more into playing fgs so any recs will rock
if you havent already gotten Fightcade 2 (free online arcade emulator with a focus on fighting games) i cannot recommend it more than is physically possible. best way to play all these great games for free with rollback netcode. anyway if you like grapplers and rekkas might i suggest trying out King of Fighters? the most recent entry, KoFXV is really good, but you can play games like KoF2002 and KoF98 on fightcade and get a feel for it. thats a series with a lot of strong rekka and grappler characters like Iori and Damion.
