In a recent episode of Dimension 20: Fantasy High - an actual play DnD show that I really highly rate - Fig (the party's bard) said something that I found super interesting.
In general, Fig’s arc this season has been very compelling and pleasingly messy. Which I think is a credit to Emily Axford as a performer; able to play a character who's incredibly funny, utterly unpredictable, and who also feels like a totally credible actual person.
So, the thing she said! Context: Fig is talking to her teacher at high school, where Fig is supposed to be learning to be a bard. Fig plays bass and a lot of her story in early seasons was about music as rebellion.
And Fig is explaining to her teacher how she's not sure how she feels about being a performer anymore. She's not sure, effectively, if that's where she wants her power to come from.
So she says words to the effect of: “I'm not sure how I even feel about being a performer. I think I'm just a really good friend. I think that's my whole deal right now.”
And … gosh. That line just stuck out to me.
It also made me think about my own relationship to my creativity - my writing and performance.
About how a lot of my motivation for writing comes from wanting to be a good friend.
How I started writing little stories to try and cheer up friends on their grey days.
How I think, for me, being a good writer/performer *is* about being a good friend.
It's about being making work that feels like a friend made it.
It's about making characters who feel like friends.
It's about making stories that people might return to on their grey days.
It's about putting ideas out into the world that make it more friendly to some folks who need that.
It's about being a good friend to the people you know who *and* to strangers.
Which, of course, is one of the reasons I love Dimension 20 so much. The ideas and stories in that show make the world an easier one to live in.
And it makes me think about things in ways both familiar and unexpected.
And, in that way, Figeroth Faeth is a really good friend to me.

you could have my heart (and i would break it for you)
aka. jamie @gilears and i went FUCKING crazy <3 welcome to 8k of second person pov fig/gorgug you didn't know you wanted <3
your name is gorgug thistlespring and your life has become some kind of masochistic train wreck and you can’t look away. you think maybe your parents should add a new tab to their binder on sex and sexuality: first page, bolded and underlined, don’t fall in love with your best friend.
(not if they don’t love you back.)
your name is fig faeth and you feel guilty. you have almost everything you’ve ever wanted, why do you have to want this, too? you know that he knows you, so you know that he couldn’t possibly want you, too. your name is fig faeth and you’re putting on a disguise to kiss a stranger because then if the rejection comes it comes from a nobody, someone who doesn’t exist either let down easy or shot down hard, it doesn’t matter. none of it matters, because none of it is you and none of it is him.
this project was so truly a labor of love and jamie and i wrote almost all of it in the course of a single evening <3 please read i am placing it gently into your hands i will love you forever
read it on ao3 HERE!!

Ok, so, please, someone stop me having ideas? ‘Cause I have SO many WIPs that I am super excited about and like? I can only be excited about so many things? But of course I have an idea for a Bad Kids Magnificent Seven style au and I have no clue where it came from?
But you know what? We’re just gonna go with it, so in like five years I’ll write it after I work through my stack of other stuff.
Ok, so, there is a town of Leviathan which is constantly getting raided by the infamous bandit James Whicklaw; the Tavern owner send their adopted daughter/ town librarian Ayda to go and hire some gunslingers.
So, first off and being closest to the Yul Brenner character is the famous gunslinger Fig ‘the demon’ Faeth (haven’t decided if this’ll be human au or not) who also plays music, cause of course she does. Fig doesn’t want to get drawn into a protection job; she’s a bounty hunter type: but immediately gets a crush on Ayda and so ends up accepting the job. Is probably the best fighter out of all of them, can use most weapons brilliantly.
Next up, the Steve McQueen kind of character, meets Fig in a similar way, just before Ayda shows up: Kristen ‘Preacher’ Applebees (kind of a similar vibe to Russel Crows character in ‘The Quick and The Dead’) who basically just joins for the fun of it. (Also kind of close to Bronson’s character; kinda adopts some kids cause they remind her of her brothers. In addition to being an excellent medic, she uses a shotgun very effectively.
Ok, so thirdly; we’ve got the silent but quite deadly type like Britt who is Gorgug but is convinced to join to help people rather than for the challenge; I’m thinking that he might use throwing axes rather than knives but I’m not sure
Harry Luck who thinks that there’s more reward up for grabs than there is; is Fabian: I feel like this could be a mix of him being out for money similar to the original, and him wanting to kill Whicklaw because maybe he killed Bill seacaster or something? Anyways, already pretty rich and owns very expensive weapons; is probably the fastest draw.
I’m not entirely sure about Riz? Maybe Charles Bronson? But then, I don’t want him to just need money? Maybe he’s like an obsessive lawman or something and there’s a bounty on Whicklaw and he’s been following him for ages?
And Adaine is Robert Vaughn’s character. A fastidious and eerie hitman who has a very scary reputation, except in this it’s more of her anxieties making it difficult to open up to people especially strangers. She and Fig have a history (you know I can’t avoid my aberfaeth shit ok?) and I’m about sixty percent sure it ends with some sweet Figaydaine. She is very well read/educated and bonds with Ayda over obscure books and stuff. Is a sharp shooter as well as a decent quick draw; uses a rifle most of the time and is easily the most dangerous at long ranges.
Anyways I’m very excited to write this; after I finish my 80000 Fig/Adaine au, my Fig/Adaine fluff piece, my Adaine centric work about her dealing with her fear of water after the nightmare king, my rewrite of my ‘Funerals of the Bad Kids’ work and my Ayda/Fig/Adaine work...
I have a short attention span ok?
