Last week I read @Feminists Don’t Wear Pink and other Lies curated by @scarlettcurtis and loved it even more than I expected to! It is a collection of pieces by fabulous women on what feminism means to them and although feminism is as individual and complex as the person it belongs to, the messages were loud and clear! Every piece was brilliant yet three of my favourites are Feminism, My Vulva and Me by @livslittle , My Feminism by @alisonsudol and Tell Him by @jameelajamilofficial. A special shout out to @rhyannon_styles for their piece Feminism Is… which I feel is a really lovely summation of feminism in all its complexity! Feminism is inclusivE. feMinism is intersectIonal. femiNism is fIghting for suStained equaliTy for all… . Have you read this book? What are your favourite feminist reads? Who is your favourite feminist? . @girlupcampaign #feminists #FDWP #feministsdontwearpink #girlup #diversereads #diversitymatters #feminism #feminist #feministreads #penguinbooks #bookblogger #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksbooksbooks #booknerd #bookworm #booklover #bibliophile #bookishfeatures #bookish #fullybooked #bookworm #bibliophile #pinkbooks #lillytales #nookandburrow #wickstockcandleco #bulletjournal #bethtibbles #minalima (at Liverpool) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrfCROhnDJc/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1881v6g3k9vds

Whenever someone asked me what my favourite colour was, I used to fell so proud saying DARK BLUE or EMERALD GREEN. Why? I thought that, because these are more traditionally “boy’s” colours, I would be thought of as more respectable, more intelligent, less “girly”. Why is that? Why do we assign colours to genders, pink being for girls and blue for boys? Why has pink become a synonym for “girly, cute, soft”, and blue for “boyish, smarter, more elegant”? Why, as a teenager, have I despised pink and gravitated towards darker, boyish colours, when growing up my favourite piece of clothing was a pink hoodie with embroidered dalmatian puppies? Why do we, girls, think that being a girl and loving pink and being girly is shameful? Why do we strive to be as boyish as we can, but still be proud to be girls and call ourselves feminist? Why do we say “I was always more of a boy, I had more boy-friends and I used to get mud and grass stains on my clothes every day.”, and frown when some other girl says “I used to love dresses and played with dolls and my clothes were always pristine and my hair perfect.”? Why is being a girl so shameful? I have realised that i actually like pink. And dark blue and emerald green. And I love glitter, though I don’t wear it. I cry when I see puppies on instagram and I love superheroes and Star Wars and don’t care one bit for flowers. I cannot draw a straight line, but I am good at Geometry and shit at Math. I don’t know anything about cars, but I am a good driver, I can check the pressure in tyres and put in petrol. In my family, I am the tech person and family and friends come to me for advice, not my Dad or my brother. I can build furniture and move it around the room, but I can’t cook, and my baking usually ends in a disaster. We are not just “a girl” or “a boy”. We are the people that raised us, the books we read, the movies we watch, the music we listen to. We are people. So why do we need to assign colours to genders? #books #feminism #feminist #bookstagram #feministsdontwearpink #chimamandangoziadichie #michelleobama #badfeminist #hollybourne https://www.instagram.com/p/CANuOuzgsht/?igshid=18yy6h34ukhik

Book review: Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (and other Lies) - Amazing Women On What The F-Word Means To Them by Scarlett Curtis
Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (and other lies) - Amazing Women On What The F-Word Means To Them is curated by journalist and activist Scarlett Curtis. It’s a collection of essays by women of a large variety of backgrounds, upbringings, etc. This allows the book to serve a larger picture of what feminism means to different races, cultures, etc.
The book is separated into six ‘categories’, them being: Epiphany, Anger, Joy, Poetry Break, Action, Education.
My favourite essays in this book are the ones by Curtis herself (”The Five Stages of Feminism”, “Feminist Comebacks” & “Baker-Miller Pink”), Alison Sudol (”My Feminism”), Lydia Wilson (”Women’s Bodies”), Angela Yee (”Braless White Women”), Olivia Perez (”10 Ways To Support The Women In Your Life”), Alicia Garza (”Feminism Is A Verb, Not A Noun”), Beanie Feldstein (”Stuff Your Pockets”), Nimco Ali (”Be A Fun Feminist”), Jordan Hewson (”A Feminist Call To Action”), Alice Wroe (”If You Can’t See It, How Can You Be It?”), and Claire Horn  (”A Short History Of Feminist Theory”). Especially the essay by Horn I find absolutely fascinating and quickly read through it. She lectures you in how the feminism movement developed and in which waves - three or even four - it occurred. After reading her text I felt even more knowledgable and even more empowered because I’ve read what women had to go through so that we now have, for example, the right to vote. It moves someone in a very specific way in which you feel responsible for what happens next and that you might as well give future generations a gift like the right the to vote.
I highly recommend reading the book and even would go as far as calling it ‘essential’ for every feminist’s bookshelf.
The book is in partnership with Girl Up. This organisation is made by ‘girls’ for girls. It allows you to feel safe and have a safe place where you can express your thoughts, ideas and feelings. Girl Up is truly an amazing network that needs more attention; also 10% of the RRP of the book goes to the girl up charity - so buying this book supports a very good cause! You can sign up for Girl Up here.

i don’t know about you, but this week feels like it’s flying by although my brain still feels little full for my liking 😂 here is a lovely stack of non-fiction that i’d like to get to this year. It’s not let me down yet this year, with Michelle Obama’s Becoming being the one good read of 2019 so far for me 🙈 so hopefully i’ll love all of these too! Do you like reading non-fiction or are you a fiction fanatic all the way? Hope you’re all having a wonderful week 🌸 ____________________________________________________ #bookstagram #bookish #nonfiction #bookcommunity #history #booklover #bibliophile #tudors #booknerd #bookdragon #goodreads #bookworm #instaread #igreads #booksofinstagram #bookworld #bookaddict #reader #bookspines #bookstack #medieval #feministsdontwearpink #feministreads #bookstagramfeature #karinareads https://www.instagram.com/p/BtAngWmHkg0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1u1p1bgdpv309
