Juulna’s 2021 Multi-Fandom Fanfiction Rec List - Part One

(Yes, I realize this is a year late, but this year's been a bit nuts. I still hope you enjoy these fics anyway!)

Based only on what I’ve read with my own eyes this year!

Follow me on my journey into what, at times, was…

…actually rather calming! Perhaps you can find some comfort and entertainment, fluff and angst and romance and friendship, smut and a distinct lack of it, space adventures and fantasy and modern adventures, serial killers and good guys, redemption and reconciliation and learning to become someone completely different — there is so much here I read that stuck with me over the past year, and the 2021 Fanfic Reading Challenge ( @fanfic-reading-challenge ) allowed me a new way to keep track of all of my favourites. So props to that event! Definitely participating again (considering I run the event, yeah, that's probably a given lol, but full disclosure).

Without further ado, here were my 2021 fic favourites!

Death threats are an unfortunate side-effect of being Tony Stark, so he's learned to ignore them. The problem is, when someone really wants you dead, hiding your head in the sand just kinda exposes your ass.

But it's not just Tony's behind on the line. Whoever wants him dead wants him to suffer first, and they're willing to do anything to make that happen. Tony knows there's only one way out. To save Steve, the Avengers, and the general public, Tony has to die. Of course, death isn't always the end, and Tony does what any other self-disrespecting scientist would do: he finds a way to fake his death and avenge his own murder.

The trouble is, terrible decisions usually have a terrible price, and this one is no different. Tony has a chance to save the day, but the cost may be more than Tony was ever expecting to pay…

He has tried writing up and down both arms then across his stomach in pictograms when he reckons that perhaps his soulmate is a double amputee and illiterate, but nothing. No response. He is uncertain why he is so surprised. Everything else about Steve is broken, so why not his soul?

But when he points the Valkyrie downwards to crash into the deep, knowing he is about to die, he spares a few precious seconds to scribble one last message to his possibly-nonexistent, potentially-blind soulmate.

Twenty-five years later, Tony Stark is born with a single phrase on his left forearm written in messy old-fashioned script. And as he grows up, the words never change:

“I love you”

It is both a blessing and a curse.

Steven Rogers never wanted to be king, but he knows his duty, and he does it well. Lord Tony Stark, the king's appointed consort, does his duty as well, even though he'd enjoy his duty more if it actually involved sleeping with the king. As it doesn't, he's just resigned. The war that made Steve king and cost him nearly everything may be over, but a meeting of old enemies might stir up some ghosts none of them are prepared for.

This was the worst assignment Davies has ever been given.

Sure, it sounded easy upfront – infiltrate the Avengers medical staff and use his access to find weaknesses and sabotage medical treatments – however, it was proving to be anything but. Mommy? Sorry: Tavomir of Fort Morninglord's mother comes to visit the camp. But... she didn't know Tav would be there. The rest of the camp reacts to his mother, specifically Wyll and Karlach

Star Wars:

Two There Must Be: Anakin/Vader's spirit, immediately after Endor, is teleported back over fifty years to be reborn as his own older sibling. Or should I say, her own because she's in a female body. Started as silly goofy, but now I'm really into the politics of the Prequel era

Title of Jen'ari: AU of 2tmb, set a thousand years before Yavin on the planet Dromuund Kaas. Has minor spoilers for 2tmb (read until chapter 13) but is largely independent of anything. Anakin and Ava are siblings and they're Sith attending an Election on Dromuund Kaas

Fan Map of Dathomir: Legends and Canon have two wildly different depections of Dathomir. My solution? It's just different continents lmao. I consider the Nightsisters to actually just be a collection of other clans under the authority of one Overclan and it's Matron - that being Talzin. The Language is butchered Slavic but such is life.

Misc:

Nieces and Nephews: Sabrina Spellman is prepared to face down the Dark Lord... only for a sarcastic, British asshole to walk into Dorian's. He flashes his detective badge, and claims to be Lucifer Morningstar, who came from LA to deal with an impostor. And oops, Sabrina is his daughter!

Conductive Materials: Female Toni Stark and Thor bond over the fact that position's of power can often limit their personal connections. And then they bond over not having a power dynamic over each other.

No One Escapes Cidhna Mine: My first attempt to chronicle my elder scrolls character. It was fine, I guess, I'm not too crazy about it and would definitely change a few things about it now. My Dragonborn (or the one I consider to be my 'main') is a Half Nord Half Reachman intent on reaching godhood through artifacts and political schemes.

Stephen looked around the garage, nodding his head in response to the beat of the loud music filling the space.

AC/DC, Shoot to Thrill, good song, Stephen thought to himself as he tapped the Cloak on his shoulders, asking it to help search for Toni. She wasn’t in her usual places, sprawled out over the moth-eaten couch in the far corner of the garage, nor was she asleep cramped and curled into herself under one of the desks.

That could only mean.

Swearing under his breath, he vaulted over one of the desks, the Cloak whipping past him as it flattened itself to the floor and swept under the Shelby Mustang Toni had been working on months ago. Stephen heard the giggling laugh and he flung himself down on his knees, hands patting around on the concrete before he found a foot.

Tugging, he glared down at Toni as she rolled out from underneath the car, a huge grin on her oil-smeared face.

‘Hey! I didn’t think you were going to be back till tomorrow. Hello, to you too.’ She rolled her eyes as the Cloak ruffled around her face, checking she was okay.

‘What the hell are you doing?’ Stephen snapped, reaching down a hand to help her up to her feet.

‘Working on the Mustang,’ Toni answered, pointing to the car above her like Stephen was an idiot. Refusing his hand, she rolled slightly on the car creeper, ignoring the way Stephen grabbed the edges of it to steady her. She didn’t accept his hand, getting to her feet and crossing her arms over her chest.

‘Toni, we’ve talked about this.’ Stephen exhaled heavily, trying to expel some of the anger and frustration he felt, not wanting to create any tension or start yet another fight.

‘Nope, we’ve talked about not putting myself in a dangerous situation. Which I agreed with. No suit, no Avenger business.’ She reached up to tap the arc reactor in her chest, still glaring down at him.

Despite his annoyance, Stephen couldn’t help but feel giddy as he looked up at her. She was an absolute mess, scrapes and oil decorating her skin in patches, her hair escaping the high ponytail she’d yanked it back into, a few coffee strands curling around her face. His eyes fell on the slight swell to her stomach, and he felt a phantom hand plunge into his chest, squeezing his heart.

Their daughter.

‘You don’t think working beneath a car is dangerous!’ Stephen couldn’t help himself. It was as if he’d been plucked out of his brain, all of his logic, his rational thoughts scattered around his feet as fear took over. He’d never felt like this before, this all-encompassing terror that something would happen to her if he took his eyes off her for a second.

He worried for her safety when she went out on missions, grumbled at her if she pulled too many late nights and sustained herself on nothing but coffee, and woke up late at night from nightmares of losing her.

All of that paled in comparison to what he felt now.

‘Stephen, it’s safe.’ She was trying to keep her voice steady, but anger was stitched through her words, her hand resting on her stomach self-consciously. ‘FRIDAY is in charge of the supports, it’s not going to fall on me,’ she scoffed, walking away from him.

That was the thing though, what if it did fall on her? Stephen scrambled up to his feet, watching as she walked across the garage, patting the Cloak as she went. Everything was a threat now. He worried about her becoming sick from eating something bad, being jostled by crowds of people if they went for a walk, her falling over without him being there to prevent it.

Then there were other, mind-crippling fears plaguing him. Villains, enemies both of them had made, interdimensional threats. He couldn’t breathe if he thought about it too much, succumbing to panic attacks he hadn’t spoken to anyone about.

Why did he think he could do this?

‘Stephen?’ Toni called from the couch, a fruit smoothie in her hand as she watched him.

Joining her on the couch, he took one of her hands in his, pulling it into his lap.

‘Sorry,’ he said, hanging his head.

‘I mean, if the car fell on me, you’d have a whole different problem,’ she tried to joke, her dark sense of humor really not helping the situation.

He didn’t want to argue with her, that wasn’t good for the baby or Toni, but Stephen knew he was driving her crazy with his concerns. Thinking about it, today was the first time he’d seen her smile at him in a long time.

‘I’m being too much, aren’t I?’ he asked, lifting her hand to kiss the back of it.

Toni didn’t answer at first, leaning over to put her smoothie on the floor beside the couch and then reaching up to undo her hair. It tumbled across her shoulders, and Stephen couldn’t help staring, remembering how he’d fallen in love with her, the happiness he’d felt when she told him with tears in her beautiful eyes that they were going to become parents.

‘I’m worried too…about being a good mom,’ she whispered, pulling her hand down to his forearm so she could grip it tightly. ��I’m doing everything you and the doctor told me. I’ve given up coffee, I’m trying to eat better and sleep regularly. I’ve given up my spot on the Avengers, and I’ve got Pepper covering my hours at work.’

Stephen felt awful, and he shifted so his back was against the armrest of the couch, drawing Toni back so she rested between the v made by his legs, her back against his chest. Holding her tight, he kissed her cheekbone and waited for her to finish.

‘I’m happy to do all of that, but…sometimes it’s hard,’ she murmured, worried about judgement. ‘I miss it. I miss flying, fighting, working on the suit, inventing.’

‘I’m sorry I reacted the way I did. You’re right, I don’t remember a single time a car has fallen on you while you’ve been working on it,’ he teased, smiling into her hair as she laughed. ‘Toni, it’s normal to feel like this, to miss your old life, and I’m so proud of you.’

One of his hands drifted to her stomach, and she caught it beneath her own, trapping his trembling fingers against her skin.

‘It scares me,’ he admitted, tightening his legs around her.

‘Being a parent?’

‘No. Well, yes, that too, but the thought of something happening to you, either of you. I’ve been having nightmares about it. It’s like something takes hold of me when I see you, some primal desire to keep you both safe, from everything.’

‘Ah, instincts suck. Your inner caveman wants to keep your offspring safe,’ Toni answered, patting the back of his hand.

‘Both of you. I want to keep you both safe.’ He caressed her stomach in contemplation. He hadn’t been able to feel her move yet, but Toni had, little fluttering movements. ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t realize how miserable you were.’

‘Working on the Mustang was the first time in a while I’ve felt like me again,’ Tony admitted, like it was some shameful secret.

‘Well, as long as you can still fit beneath the car, and your body tells you it’s alright, you should be fine.’

‘Really?’

‘No heavy lifting, and you stop if anything feels wrong,’ Stephen told her, nuzzling the side of her head. He wouldn’t be able to completely suppress his fears regarding her safety, but he supposed that was what it meant to be a parent.

‘Toni?’

‘Hmm?’ She yawned, tiredness beginning to seep in as it usually did this time of day.

‘I love you.’

Toni Stark is unlike any of the women Elvis has known. She's insanely intelligent, witty, and doesn't stand for anyone's shit. He develops a crush on her from afar, giving longing glances every time he sees her exiting press conferences when he's on the way to his concerts. Toni never notices him, more focused on escaping flashing cameras. But, what happens when Toni is gone for three months and comes back a changed woman with a certain glowing contraption in her chest?

Or: Toni Starks stays at the International Hotel pouring her time into the party life and meaningless one-night-stands. Elvis has a fierce interest in her, but then she's captured in Afghanistan and eventually comes back to Vegas as a workaholic and the metal hero we all know and love.

Not placed in the MCU or its timeline, I'm just using versions of the characters and their backstories in this story. Also will not be historically accurate when it comes to American politics and wars of the time. Priscilla does not exist in this story. Also not betaed.

Chapter 1: Let’s Start at the Beginning…

Antonia Margaret Stark was born during a catastrophic thunderstorm on May 29, 1945, foreshadowing the immense impact she would have on the world around her. Her loving mother, Maria Stark, was thrilled to welcome her baby girl into the world, while Howard Stark, Antonia's father, was quite the opposite. He needed a son. He had written in his will that his eldest child was to inherit the ownership of Stark Industries when he passed. Such a position was not meant for a woman. And he couldn't try to make an exception and have another child, as he and Maria already struggled to bring Antonia about. He was stuck and already held a grudge against his daughter for simply being born a female.

So, growing up, Antonia, or Toni as she would prefer to be called, was constantly pushed away by her father when she ever showed an interest in his line of work. At age 7, she had wandered into her father's office to show him a mechanical toy car she had built. He had been in a meeting with Obadiah Stane, Toni called him Uncle Obie, and when Howard was interrupted by the little girl's voice shouting, "Daddy, look what I made!" he slammed the door right on Toni, resulting in a few of her toes being broken. She didn't even have the energy to cry, too shocked to even feel the stabbing pain running up her left foot. When her mother found her crumpled on the floor by Howard's office door, her toy car scattered around her in pieces, Maria did not need to question what happened. She knew of Howard's distaste for their only child. Her mother simply bowed down to scoop Toni off the ground and laid her in her bed, calling a doctor to fix her foot.

Throughout elementary and middle school, Toni proved to be more intelligent than some of her teachers. She always won top prize in science fairs and spelling bees. Her mother was always there offering her sweet smiles of reassurance as well as her Aunt Peggy, one of her father's old friends from the military, who Toni looked up to for her strength, was there looking at her with pride. Uncle Jarvis, Howard's right-hand-man, was sure to attend every single one, being the father figure Toni never had. Even Uncle Obie had managed to come to a few of her events, apologizing for Howard's absence, claiming he was too "busy" with board meetings and inventing the next big military weapon.

From then on, Toni made it her life's mission to prove her father wrong, and show that she could be just as successful as him, if not more. Luckily, she was not alone in her journey, her mother supported her, buying her the textbooks she wanted and helping her change her bedroom into a lab space for her to experiment. And, of course, she had her Aunt Peggy and Uncle Jarvis who would come to the house to tell Howard about their adventures, but would always devote time to listen to Toni ramble on about electric circuits and whatever new scientific discovery she had made. Uncle Jarvis was the only man in Toni's life she truly trusted. He taught her how to ride a bike and tie her shoes. But, she had a special bond with her Aunt Peggy as well, her hardiness and red lipstick just two of the things Toni had admired about her aunt. She always took Peggy's advice, to always stick up for herself; not to move, but make others move instead.

At age 13, Toni was already enrolled at MIT, breezing through her courses, rarely paying attention to the lessons, having the occasional professor call her up to the board to solve an equation to which she would break down with ease. In 1958, she was the youngest and only female student at MIT. She was sure her name had something to do with her enrollment, but she also knew her credentials were beyond extraordinary. She constantly had a target on her back, not missing the sneers some of the boys give her, assuming she only got in on the basis of who her father was. But, she had many accomplishments at MIT, including her invention of the first form of Artificial Intelligence. She decided to create a robot to help her with her tools, which prompted her to try a new type of coding where the robot’s skills developed by learning through experiences. It also caused the robot to gain personality traits, one of which being its blatant ignorance, earning it the name of DUM-E. She graduated at age 17 with an undergraduate degree in computer science and molecular biology and eventually received two master’s degrees in engineering by age 19.

After her time at MIT, Toni spent her days on minor projects for Stark Industries because of her father’s refusal to give her an official position in the company. It was better than nothing, she told herself. She was participating in the hands-on aspects of the engineering, experimenting with welding and proper wire placement. Most of the time she had the fellow engineers question her methods or tell her to leave and let the men do the work. Her life went on like this for two years, she was content(ish), but felt she was ready to move on to bigger things.

Then December 16, 1966 rolled around which would cause Toni’s life to take a full 180. It seemed like a normal winter day, she woke up to go to the lab, before wishing her parents safe travels for their visit to the Pentagon. Her father shrugged her off with annoyance and told her not to make a mess of his penthouse while they were away. Her mother stood on her toes to kiss Toni’s forehead, before she said her last words to her daughter, “Farewell, Gioia, show those stuck-ups that you’re a Stark,” she whispered the last part before grabbing her bag and walking out of Toni’s life forever with the shutting of a door.

While working on a new rotator for the latest missile, one of the welders had handed her a rusted phone after saying, “It’s for you, Stark,” Her eyes became watery as she heard the monotone voice on the other end tell her that her parents were in a fatal car accident while en route to the Pentagon. She dropped the phone and ran into the tiny ladies’ restroom before getting sick in one of the toilets. Her father had taken her mother away from her. He took everything from Toni. Her mother was gone. Her sweet, caring, innocent mother who had seen Toni’s potential when her father hadn’t. Her mother who had made her tea and tiramisu after having a bad day at MIT. Her mother who silently stood up against Howard by supporting Toni’s passion. She would never see her again. Toni had never felt so helpless in her life. She crumpled on the dusty bathroom tile and sobbed into her knees for hours until someone had called Uncle Obie to come looking for her. When he found her in her fetal position, he pulled her onto her feet before speaking solemnly, “Come on, your mother wouldn’t want to see you like this,” Toni let out a sob at the mention of her mother before he continued, “Let’s get you home.” But Toni knew her home would no longer be home anymore without the smell of her mother’s perfume or her homemade Italian meals.

The funeral was quiet with only close friends and family in attendance. Aunt Peggy and Uncle Jarvis were there with their arms around Toni and their eyes stuck on the shiny caskets. Obadiah had wanted Toni to say a few words for her lost parents. Toni rambled on about her mother's proud Italian roots and how she devoted her time to philanthropy and helping those in need. How she never let her own emotions get in the way of helping others. How gloomy this world will be without her bright smile. Then it came to talk about Howard. Toni talked of his scientific discoveries and how the weapons industry would not be as advanced without him. She never told of anything personal because there was nothing to tell.

As Toni watched the dirt pour onto her parents' caskets, she discovered that she would do whatever she needed to do to reach the top of the pyramid. If it meant working until her body and mind broke, she would do it. She was no longer just Toni, she was Toni Stark.

After Obadiah Stane’s temporary position as CEO, Toni took over at age 21, being the youngest and only female CEO of any corporation, ever. She was a revolutionary, and she let it get to her head. She built weapons more advanced than her father’s, working herself to the bone for countless hours, becoming a scientific prodigy. The stocks rose drastically, until eventually Toni Stark had more money than God with too many properties, cars, and expensive paintings to count. Her life became a constant cycle of working in her lab for days, coming out for a day or two of partying, drinking, gambling, and meaningless sex with handsome journalists she would charm into her hotel room. She hid her pain behind lavish clothing, self-importance, and sarcasm.

She got herself an assistant, Pepper Potts, who was more a babysitter than a personal assistant, but they had an understanding of each other that led to an unbreakable friendship. She also had her butch security guard and chauffeur, Happy Hogan, who was hired more for Toni’s teasing than security purposes. But, most important of all, she met her best friend, her platonic soulmate, James Rhodes, or Rhodey Bear as Toni liked to call him. They met through the constant meetings between Toni and the military superiors. They immediately clicked and haven’t left each other’s side since. He went from U.S. Air Force officer to Toni Stark's best friend and the military's chief liaison to Stark Industries' weapons division. He was her rock and the voice of reason in her fuck-up of a life, cleaning the messes she left behind. He was the only one who saw the real side of Toni, past the façade of the rich, genius, playgirl, and instead saw the raw, emotional wreck of a human. And he never judged her for her true self, just held her when she cried.

When Toni wasn’t in New York for boring meetings and whatnot, she spent her days in the new International Hotel in Las Vegas. She had her own special penthouse built in the hotel with a lab for her late-night inventions and enough room to house 5 families. Her only companions were her two bots DUM-E and Butterfingers, who she'd brought from New York to stay in her hotel room. Though occasionally Pepper or Rhodey would visit for business inquiries, but most people knew to leave her alone while she was in Vegas. She spent her days in the VIP lounge smoking cigarettes, drinking and flirting with men twice her age. Vegas reminded her of herself, it was full of chaos and it never slept. It was her escape from New York, the escape from the death of her mother and her father’s dissatisfaction. So, Vegas is where she stayed.

Despite fighting against Iron Man, Bucky didn't actually know Tony. Even then, he didn't know how he was the only one starstruck. He couldn't imagine the kind of miracles she must have pulled off before for the team to not even thank her.

Bucky survives the snap, survives to see two-thirds of the universe die, half turning to ash, the others killed because those others turned to ash. He follows Steve back to America and the Avengers compound struggling to try and make sense of everything that has happened. Then Tony Stark returns to earth, broken, sick, desolate. Bucky feels he owes Tony for what he did to his parents, he wants to find a way to make amends and the only way he think to do that is to act as protection for Tony while he slowly recovers from his time in space.

Tony couldn't care less what happens to him now. He failed, Peter is gone, two-thirds of the Universe is gone, why should he care if he lives or dies now? he is determined to help others while he can though and if that means Barnes is following him around then he can help too.

What neither expect is a relationship to blossom between them or the family that blooms out of the ashes of their shattered pasts.

Tony Stark is a man of many faces; stressed, a little manic, overly fond of smoothies and kinder than anyone Bucky has ever met, although he hides it well. He's not quite sure why no one else is providing the support and companionship that the man is quietly desperate for, but it's no hardship to step up to the plate. He's always had a thing for scrappy underdogs after all.
