Pics: Bert Terhune related notes.
1. Mary Virginia Haws, Bert's mom was a writer of novels, travelogues, memoirs, domestic manuals, etiquette booklets & cookbooks.
2. Cover of 1 of her house 'running' books.
3. Who doesn't recognize a Lassie poster? This being for 1 of her many movies.
4 & 5. Covers of some of Bert's many works.
6. At least 1 of Bert's short stories focused on the danger that spies & assassins posed to General George Washington.
7. Poster for the "Ogre" TV movie, with a great tagline!
8. Bust of Cleisthenes, the Father of Athenian democracy.
9. Bust of Alexander Pope, the English poet, translator & satirist on society & politics.
10. John Dryden painting, an earlier English poet, literary critic, translator, satirist & playwright.
Notes (on yesterday's post):
1. The Adventurers Club of NY was a private men's club founded in 1912 by one A. Hoffman.
Its main functions were monthly dinners & a weekly lunch.
Their main rule was that "No one talks about Fight Club!"
There's complete silence on most of their activities.
Yet, for a secretive group, they certainly went out of their way to announce their events.
First, they published The Adventurer, a monthly newsletter that ran until 1960!
Then they had a weekly radio show, the Gold Seat Associates, where club members spoke of the most exciting moment of their lives.
The Adventurers Club finally faded out during the 1970s.
2. Lassie is the star of an American TV series (1954 to 1973) & several movies.
'She' (actually male dogs were used!) is a smart & fearless collie living in a Virginia farm with her companions - human or otherwise.
Later in the show, Lassie worked with forest rangers - out in the wilderness!
There's also an animated series that brought Lassie's heroic acts into the 2000s.
Lassie's latest film came out in 2022...
3. Mary V. Haws wrote several novels set in the southern states before the Civil War, which began in 1861.
(But, this was actually only after many decades of rising tensions - mostly on the subject of slavery.
It only ended after 4 years & some 610,000+ deaths!!)
Haws completed her last book at the age of 88 - while she was quite blind!
4. Other books by Bert Terhune are: "World's Great Events", "Famous American Indians", "Wonder Woman in History", "Around the World in 30 Days" & "Superwomen."
5. Scribblers are people who write for hire or as a hobby. Usually, scribblers worked for newspapers & magazines.
It's just that readers don't actually like their articles!
6. The American Revolution lasted from 1775 to 1783. Its causes were British taxes, the Boston Massacre & the Intolerable Acts.
Only 45% of colonists supported this war - as it forced neighbors against each other!
In Ben Franklin's case, it permanently tore his family apart...
7. Don't know why Lovecraft equates the famous folk he mentioned with ogres - except for Bonaparte, maybe.
Ogres are hideous looking, human eating giants from fairy tales & folk- lore.
It's no better in slang, as it describes "a person who's monstrously ugly, cruel or barbarous."
(Shrek they are not!)
Ogre comes to us thru France. But, it's actually from Etruscan (ancient north Italian nation & language) "Orcus", God of the Dead & punisher of oath- breakers.
8. "Where freedom 1st arose..."
A. This would be ancient Athens, in Greece on 508 BC. That's when Cleisthenes 1st set up a democratic government there.
(But, Howard could be referring to the American Revolution again.)
B. In that case, Congress did approve in becoming independent on July 2nd, 1776, thru the Lee Resolution.
We now celebrate when our politicians started signing the official Declaration of Independence, on July the 4th.
But, it took some time before all of the congressmen actually did so...
England didn't really 'recognize' our victory until the Paris Treaty of 1783!
Even then, Britain tried to 'reacquire' its 13 colonies during the War of 1812...
9. HPL seemed aware of his writing limits.
His evoking of imagery & emotion rested upon his skill at following strict poetic structures & his own aesthetic taste.
Lovecraft thought it more important to be formally correct, rather than to be creatively interesting.
10. As to Howard's personal writing style, it's actually his own copying of the forms of A. Pope & J. Dryden.
Pope was 1 of the most prominent writers of the 1700s.
Dryden was the 1st Poet Laureate of England & is chiefly responsible for introducing heroic couplets & the triplet into English poetic structures...
END.

If This Was A Movie: A Brief Retrospective
It's April 2009*, and Taylor Swift has been dumped over a 27-second phone call by Joe Jonas for half a year now. For whatever reason, despite performing the non-single track Forever & Always a LOT during this time (iconic move tbh), she now feels more wistful about that relationship and wishes he'd stayed longer. So she calls Martin Johnson, whom she's a fan of and collaborated with for that Hannah Montana song, and they get together and write If This Was A Movie.
After its release in October 2010, If This Was A Movie had largely flown under the radar, not least because it was a deluxe track. However, it has found some favour among more devoted fans (including a certain prolific YouTuber). Also, as Taylor never officially released the lyrics to this song**, occasionally there are debates on who Eli is, and whether that line in the bridge says "ever", "every day", "wary", "weary" or "worried".
We fast forward a bit and it's now November 2011. Taylor Swift has finally released the deluxe tracks of Speak Now on iTunes for purchase. One of these songs is Ours. It's widely known to be her next single, and she's just performed it live at the CMAs. It's also listed as the first bonus track so you can't miss it. So these songs debut on the Billboard 100, and...
Tumblr media
Despite all the promo for Ours, it still comes in lower than If This Was A Movie, which debuts in the top 10. In 2011, streaming still wasn't as big of a deal, so rankings like these depended mostly on digital sales. This means that If This Was A Movie literally outsold Ours. By 17,000 downloads, in fact. Given that the songs cost $1.29 to purchase on iTunes, If This Was A Movie brought in $22k more from downloads within its first week.
Oh, and that old Instagram post I quoted above? It was originally posted on November 8, 2011, which was the first day the bonus tracks were available for download. And If This Was A Movie was already outselling Ours from the get-go.
So why hasn't Taylor Swift, a singer who puts a lot of effort into chasing chart figures, ever acknowledged the existence of If This Was A Movie? It's not like it's problematic like Better Than Revenge or emotionally raw like Dear John.
Here are three theories:
She plain forgot. She already forgot the lyrics to Mine, her lead single, on the Red tour, so it's the most probable reason. Boring though.
Something about Martin Johnson. If This Was A Movie is the only co-write on Speak Now. If Love Story is indeed about Martin Johnson like many people think, then it follows that Martin indeed the "creep" Taylor mentioned in that 60 Minutes interview in 2011, and maybe she doesn't want to give Martin any credit? But then again she performed This Is What You Came For after she split with Calvin Harris.
She doesn't think a co-written song fits on Speak Now, so she wishes it never existed. I will admit I added this after she retroactively added a song to Fearless TV. Maybe she didn't want to put it out but her label (read: Scott) forced her to? Well, I guess this is the correct answer now? Idk really.
Anyway, the song is good and it's a shame that she never performed it.
*or somewhere around that time, we can't know for sure
**that album booklet that purports to include the deluxe tracks is fake (so fake that it spells John Mayer's name wrong)
P.S. It really should be If This Were A Movie.

is that indeed the long pong studio?? googling pictures and it looks slightly different !!!
It's definitely the same studio as this which Aaron posted during Fearless (TV) promo. The booklet notes all of Taylor's vocals for Fearless (TV) were recorded in her home studio in London but I imagine if Aaron has a photo of Taylor in a studio, it's presumably one of his?
If there are peeps more familiar w The National and, by extension, long pong - lmk.

it’s currently 4:40 am, I’m at my parents house, I was playing untouchable on the guitar and put on the Taylor’s Version lyric video only to be shocked by the fact that the lyrics are “waking from this dream” and NOT “we can form this dream” which is what I’ve been singing for the past FIFTEEN years so I thought it was a mistake, I literally RAN to my bedroom, pulled out my unopened Fearless TV, unwrapped it, and the lyric booklet did in fact say “waking from this dream” so I thought they changed it for the TV, so I ran to the other side of the room to pull out the og Fearless lyric booklet and sure enough that one also says “waking from this dream” so now I will be spending the next 3-5 business days questioning life and worrying about what else I don’t know, I hate this “how can a person know everything at 18 but nothing at 22” phase of life

Now VS Then.
Taylor is the big 33 now. I feel so old. I've been a stan since I was 11. I waited up past my bedtime for Journey to Fearless when it was released. I have gone my whole life being too poor to get Taylor Merch of any sort save for one occasion where my mom got me a signed Lover booklet for $5. I've done my best this entire time and will continue to do so.
Also, the Speak Now hair she has is truly killing me. I am ready. The cells in my legs are ready. Speak Now is my favorite Taylor Swift album and even after all this time, that hadn't changed. My TOP 3 Taylor Songs are Long Live, Haunted, and Enchanted and this hasn't changed ever since Speak Now came out.
I need Speak Now (Taylor's Version) with current vocal ability. Long Live (TV) will end me. I'm already crying.

1. What is the first song you remember hearing?
I don’t have a memory of a particular song, but I have a vivid memory of sitting in the computer room while my dad was listening to some soft instrumental jazz. That, or the TV show theme songs my mom used to sing to me as a baby when I couldn’t sleep.
2. What is the first band you got into?
How lame does it make me sound if I say The Jonas Brothers?
3. Do you collect music on any physical format?
CDs, baby! They’re the superior form of recorded music, and I will die on that hill.
4. What is your favourite piece of music-related memorabilia/merchandise?
My mom recently got me a custom denim jacket with the Black Parade album cover on the back, and I think it’s the coolest thing in the world.
5. What is your favourite concert you've been to?
Taylor Swift :) I was lucky enough to see her back in the Fearless era
6. If you could see one artist (or band) who is no longer alive in concert, who would it be?
Probably Lou Reed, or The Beatles (I know 2 of them are still alive, but I can’t actually see The Beatles, you know?)
7. Have you met any musicians?
I mean, local musicians, all the time since I’m in that scene myself. I also met an Australian singer-songwriter named Garrett Kato after a concert. I think that’s about it.
8. What is your go-to song/album when feeling sad?
Figure 8 and Either/Or by Elliott Smith; literally anything Mal Blum or Modern Baseball have ever written
9. What is your go-to song/album when feeling happy?
thank u, next and sweetener by Ariana Grande; the Into the Spiderverse soundtrack; “You Get What You Give” by New Radicals
10. What is one music-related documentary you love?
I can’t think of one off the top of my head :/
11. What is one concert DVD that you love?
I don’t own any. Like, aside from my own concerts.
12. Do you prefer listening to playlists or full albums?
Depends on my mood. I’ve been really into the playlist thing lately since I’m trying to get the most out of my Spotify student plan.
13. Do you tend to listen to albums in order or on shuffle?
Both, but usually in order.
14. What is your favourite deep cut song by your favourite artist?
I’ll do one for each of my ultimate favorite artists:
Green Day - I don’t know that I’m familiar with any Green Day deep cuts... “Forever Now”?
My Chemical Romance - “The Five of Us Are Dying”
Left at London - There’s not too deep you can go, but I feel like “The Ballad of Marion Zioncheck” is underappreciated.
Mal Blum - “New Orleans”
15. What is your favorite CD/vinyl/cassette that you own in terms of packaging?
I’m a little bit obsessed with looking at the Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge booklet and case at the moment
I wasn’t tagged, I just stole it, but I’ll tag @robinruns and anyone else who wants to do it!

I’m looking forward to the re-records for many reasons, but one is less misheard lyrics! I think her annunciation on Fearless (TV) was greatly improved. I usually know the correct lyrics (in ye olde days I had an album booklet, now I use either the lyric mv or the lyrics feature in Apple Music) but even then it was sometimes difficult to *hear* those correct words. On BTR I struggle to hear “right there where I wanted him” and IWYW with “stand back where you stood.” I think that will get better!
I noted this too after listening to Fearless (TV). Taylor’s never had an Ariana Grande-sized problem with enunciation but I definitely think her phrasing and singing was much more crisp and clear on the re-recorded version and I can only see that continuing on the other re-records.

okay but why didn't Taylor put the secret messages in the booklet for Fearless (TV) again, the next generation will never know how fun it is to decode them
