more karli, because i can:
By the time night had fallen and the moon had risen high in the sky, you and Karli were already back in the hut. Neither of you were pretending to sleep on the raggedy floor with your bodies pressed together under the sleeping bag: the warmth from Karli’s cheek was bleeding on your palm as you brushed a vivid red coil away from her beautiful brown eyes with your thumb. She hadn’t blinked in almost a minute. You couldn’t look away.
You were dumbstruck as you stared back, lost for words. The both of you were exhausted and hungry and aching, but there was a mutual understanding that this had to happen now.
“One world,” you mumbled, your eyes roaming across her face. Brown eyes, pink lips, freckles all over. All beautiful. Even with the gash John Walker had given her above her right eyebrow, she was still beautiful.
“One people,” she whispered back, right before she leaned in and closed the distance between your lips.
Her mouth was warm, comforting. It always was.
As your lips met, it was as if the weight of the world melted away, leaving only the warmth of Karli's embrace.
Time seemed to melt away as you savoured the intimacy of the moment. The kiss was a silent promise.
When you finally pulled away, the air between you crackled with unspoken emotions, the intensity of your connection lingering in the small confines of the hut. Karli's gaze bore into yours, her eyes reflecting a myriad of emotions: gratitude, longing, exhaustion, a tiny bit of apprehension.
For a moment, neither of you spoke, the weight of the unspoken hanging heavy in the air. But then, Karli broke the silence with a soft sigh, her fingers tracing patterns on the fabric of the sleeping bag.
"We should get some rest," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
You nodded, still unable to tear your gaze away from her.

Tfatws is definitely a comfort show except that the Karli girl deeply triggers me 😭 from the first second I saw her she reminded me of my childhood bully and it doesn't even make sense like ???? The hair is similar the freckles are the same but my ex friend WASNT BRITISH??? SKFHJSHS but the ~way~ she talks so condescendingly makes me wanna SCREAM and I've tried to ignore it but she just. Reminds me of Her™ and She™ make my skin crawl and my blood boil. But the rest of the show I'm like aww hehe Bucky 🥰 Sam 🥰 my boys 🥰

I've been reading through the posts and anons regarding Bucky's characterisation in FATWS and I couldn't agree more with your responses.
I think the deep dives and theories from some of the anons on how the writing for Bucky could be spun if we really wanted to are interesting and well intentioned but when I look at what was actually presented, I finished FATWS feeling like I was supposed to view Bucky as a reformed villain who was looking for redemption and that I was supposed to root for him now that he was on the right path and making choices to atone for his sins and make right for his life of crime ---and, considering Bucky was a victim, that did not sit right with me at all. I find it hard to believe that someone could have watched Bucky's story from the beginning and not rooted for him the whole way through.
I actually found the attempts to villainise him a disgusting narrative choice.
This was not an arc about a victim healing, it was an arc about an assassin looking for redemption.
So I think that even if the attempt was to show the shadiness of the government or to portray it as Bucky's misplaced guilt being the driving force, it ultimately doesn't matter because that's not how the narrative presented it. Bucky makes a lot of statements that signify his own feelings of guilt and low sense of self worth 'the power I gave her' 'I know crazy because I am crazy' the conversation he has with Sam about why he has to be the one to talk to Zemo--and none of these statements are shot down, not even by Sam who is supposed to be our hero and experienced PTSD therapist. In fact, Sam even encourages Bucky's negative self image at points with lines like 'even him, and he's killed everyone he's ever met' (which is why I'll also argue that Sam is mischaracterised in this show too)
That's because the narrative wants us to take Bucky's guilt at face value, they want us to see this as a matter fact and something that Bucky has to redeem himself from in order to reach his goal of feeling worthy and human again. They want Bucky's guilt to be a point both he and the audience agree on.
While the narrative leaves space for us to counter its perception of Bucky and his level (or lack) of responsibility for things that The Winter Soldier did--it does nothing to counter its own assumption that Bucky should be considered complicit in the things he was forced to do by Hydra.
We are told some form of this by everyone from Zemo to Sharon to Karli to Raynor to Isaiah to even Sam.
Even when Bucky finally breaks and openly admits that he's beginning to question Steve's faith in him, there is no response to counter his lack of self belief. Neither Sam nor Raynor argue the matter.
During the one moment that the writing could have explicitly made it clear that the narrative viewed Bucky as a victim of Hydra instead of the villian he believes himself to be, we got blank space instead. They could have expanded on the scene between him and Yori and used the father of one of The Winter Soldier's targets to make the point that Bucky was a victim too but instead, we got the implication that Yori was yet another person seeing him as the same monster that Bucky believes himself to be.
So when we take the writing as it actually is, we are left with Bucky believing he is responsible for the crimes that Hydra committed using The Winter Soldier. We are left with no one countering his belief, we are in fact left with both our protagonists and antagonists equally reinforcing Bucky's guilt and self-portrayal as a reforming villain and we are left with Bucky learning that he has to pay for what 'he' did by living in service of those 'he' hurt.
That is what the narrative tells us about Bucky Barnes in FATWS. That is what the character of Bucky Barnes tells us in FATWS, that is what the other characters tell us about Bucky Barnes in FATWS--and we have nothing within the narrative of FATWS that leads us to believe otherwise.
Hello lovely! I'm not sure how I missed this post although I did have a lot of personal stuff going on a few months ago and maybe I shelved it for a time I could reply properly, so apologies for the delay!
All excellent points up there.
Back during the height of the TFATWS discourse (mostly stemming from the fact that several of us were trying to write fix-its and just couldn't make the canon make sense), one of the key points of contention was between fans who felt the narrative fell short in addressing Bucky's lack of agency and therefore lack of liability for the Winter Soldier's crimes, vs other fans who felt Steve's one line in CACW "it wasn't your fault" was enough and hence his lack of agency did not need to be raised again in TFATWS.
But you are absolutely right. The narrative frames Bucky as guilty and volatile, and it does nothing to dispose the viewers otherwise. None of the characters treat him in a way that suggests any empathy for his status as a prisoner of war, only something bordering on derision that he's been spared punishment.
Which, I think, accurately reflects how most of the MCU writers have spoken of him.

tfatws would've been SO good if they had hired actually good writers 😭 forever mourning what could've been.....
the potential of fatws haunts me like a grim spectre of potential because some parts of it i LOVED (sam & karli, boat adventures, zemo & his thoughts & opinions, SARAH, Isaiah, sam being told he deserves the shield but having to think about whether or not the SHIELD deserves HIM) but like. oh my god
i learned very little new info about sam wilson As A Guy on the Sam Wilson (& Bucky Barnes) Show. i learned nothing new about bucky barnes on the Sam Wilson & Bucky Barnes Show. THEY PUT i gotta calm down give me a second hi. they put. the winter soldier (THE WINTER SOLIDER. BONKY BARN HIMSELF) in on-screen therapy........... & had him talking about how he needs 2 manfully make amends 4 his terrible hydra crimes like how do u fumble the ball this hard. cowardice it's cowardly behaviour
and like here's the thing. i did not actually need the writing to be Good i just needed it to commit to any kind of bit. like. serve a purpose. have intent. know what it is trying to say a little bit or at least have something that it would Like to say abt the characters etc
like i consider im2 to be a good iron man movie because despite being stupid (& clumsy in places) it knows what it is & what it's for & what it's doing and it executes most of it pretty decently. Also it is fun and we learn things in it. a low bar :)
who was fatws For (aside from me personally so that i can cheer when i see my best friend samuel in his party city captain america costume for one single episode). these same dudes are writing sam's movie now i am white knuckling it

Protective Bucky
First fic in years! Let's see if I can keep this up.
Plot: Bucky x Reader. Young woman was captured by Hydra for the use of her fire powers. Bucky finds her beaten to a pulp at a raided Hydra base. Based on that scene from FaTWS when Bucky spots Karli in the truck and gets all soft, but this time the girl is actually in trouble.
TWs: Violence, injuries in this chapter. There will be more warnings in the next chapters, so keep an eye on them.
Chapter 1/?
Tumblr media
Steve, Nat, Sam, and Bucky took a mission to track a handful of semitrucks that are believed to lead to a hydra base. The managed to attach trackers to four trucks with Sam’s redwing flying unseen after they found all four leave a warehouse. Back at the tower, they watched as they all split apart and go separate directions, but all of them end up in the middle of nowhere upstate. The team’s satellite doesn’t even have a building registered at the trucks’ location.
The four of them set out to the location in a quinjet, ready for another hydra raid. They arrive in the dark, early morning. Sam stays back to monitor them from above with Friday’s satellite view and give the team some heads-up for any hydra agents. They hesitate to attack at first, but Sam’s voice comes into their earpieces.
“Sure enough,” Sam says from back in the quinjet. “Armed guards around the building with hydra logos on their jackets.”
The rest of the team were hidden in the woods surrounding a large, dark green facility. Hardly any lights break through the darkness. This base definitely tried, and succeeded for a short while, to stay off of shield’s radar. Sam, Steve, and Nat go in for the attacks. After taking down the guards, inside of the base they were not well secured, and it fell quickly. They were not prepared for an attack tonight and it ended as soon as it began. Nat saves intel from the base while they call in more shield agents to arrest the hydra team. At this point, the sun has begun to rise. Steve and Nat are handling arrests and dismantling the base, but Sam finds something for Bucky to handle.
“Bucky, one of those vans isn’t empty.” Sam tells Bucky directly.
“Yeah, Sam. We will clear them out later after they get rid of everyone.” Bucky responds, walking to find where Steve went off to.
“No,” Sam says quietly. “There’s a girl inside that last one in the back.”
Bucky pauses mid-step. The last one wasn’t one they had been tracking. Who knows where it came from, or what was planned for it. “A girl?” Bucky asks back.
“I think so. Friday’s satellite isn’t getting a clear image through the thick metal truck.”
“I’ll keep you posted.” Bucky walks over to the back of the truck and breaks the lock off with his metal arm. Carefully, he opens the door, just in case it’s a trap. It’s dark in the truck, but the light from the rising sun slowly fills it. The truck is mostly filled with boxes, stuff the team will have to go through later. First, Bucky has another issue. In the right side, surely enough, is a girl tucked into the last bit of shadows. Torn, dirty clothes and covered in dried blood. Her dark, messy hair is draped over her face and she's leaning on one bent knee. She’s probably in her early 20s, but looks so small in this situation.
“Woah. Hey,” Bucky said softly to avoid startling her. “Are you hurt?”
The girl looks up and bucky doesn’t read any fear on her face. There is, however, marks and bruises all over. “Back off! Haven’t you had enough?” She yells, more tired than afraid.
“Hey now, I’m not gonna hurt you,” Bucky says, opening the door as far as it’ll go. “Did Hydra do this to you?”
The girl makes a look of surprise in her eyes. “Bucky Barnes?”
“That’s me, is that okay?”
“Holy shit,” she says with a cough. “You gotta get me out of here”
“Are you hurt?’ Bucky asks, hoping into the truck and crouching beside her.
“They beat the shit out of me.” She said shakily. Untucking her knee from her chest. Her pants are torn and stained, one shoe is missing, and her shirt is dirty and covered in blood, and she is decorated in black and blue. “I think my ankle is snapped. They got sick of my bullshit I guess.”
“We’ll get you out of here and safe,” Bucky quickly calls Steve and Nat for backup. “What did you do to piss them off?”
“I escaped.” She tries to lean back but winces and holds her wrist.
Bucky sat down and helped her lean onto the wall of the truck. “Escaped?”
“Yeah,” she says. “The took me when I was really young, when they found out about me. I never bought any of their shit. For years, I hoped the avengers would save me from them, but they kept me in their most secret bases to avoid just that. I finally managed to run away during a mission 6 months ago, but yesterday they caught up with me. They want me alive, guess ‘m valuable, but needed to ‘teach me a lesson’ about who’s in charge.” She continues, while tracing the bruises on her arm with her fingertips, not making eye contact.
“What do you mean by ‘they found out’ about you?” Bucky says.
“Promise not to get scared if I promise I’m on your side?” She says while sticking a pinky out.
“I promise. You can’t scare me.” Bucky accepts the pinky promise.
After letting go, she raises her hand, palm up, and a small flame lights in the middle. As quickly as it begins, she closes her palm, and it goes out.
“Fire?” Bucky says, a little surprised.
“Yeah. Pretty weak right now, all things considered. But hydra finds it useful for. You know.”
“Yep, I do unfortunately. I’ll be here if you need someone who understands.” Bucky sighs, and sits next to her.
A few more minutes pass before Steve and Nat get there.
“Oh shit.” Steve says, looking at Nat. Natasha is trying to hide it, but the look on her face is horror at the thought of what happened. Bucky goes to help the girl up, but she can hardly handle the weight. Bucky carries her to the jet. By the time they get inside, she's barely conscious.

KWF Day 4: Bucky Barnes x F!Reader
Main Master List KWF Master List
Warnings: Language, Blood, stabbing, Spoilers for FATWS,
Word Count: 557
Day 4: Breath Play / Hidden Injuries / Hobbies
----------
It’s been an hour since Karli Morgenthau passed away in Sam’s arms. 45 minutes since Sam gave a speech to the world leaders and officially took on the mantle of Captain America. However, it’s been two hours since you were literally stabbed in the back by Sharon Carter.
You wince as you try to apply pressure to your wound, but the harsh material of your tact suit does little to stop the bleeding.
“Hey, you okay?” Bucky appearing beside you startles you from your thoughts as you look him over; sweaty, dirty and a little bloody.
“You look like shit.” Bucky chuckles, looking up at the dark sky as he releases a breath, aware of your eyes watching him.
“Could say the same for you. You look more pale than Steve did when he rode those rides at Coney Island.”
“‘M just tired is all.” Your head lolls to the side as your body starts to fall forward but Bucky is quick to catch you in his arms, looking you over with concern.
“You sure you’re okay, doll? I can tell something is wrong.”
“Is just a stab wound, I’ll be okay.” Bucky’s eyes widen as he lays you flat on the bench and looks over your body before finding a deep cut, still bleeding.
“Shit. Why did you say anything?”
“I thought it wasn’t that big of a deal,” you comment, eyes beginning to drift close, “I just want some sleep.”
“No way.” Bucky picks you up in his arms and rushes toward an ambulance, ignoring the looks of news broadcasters and random onlookers. “I’m getting you to a hospital.”
“Hey Tin Man, what’s going on? What’s wrong with (Y/N)?” Bucky rolls his eyes at the nickname but despite your semi-unconscious state, you laugh at the little joke.
“She’s been stabbed. I don’t know how or when, but that’s not important. You handle the press and I’ll handle this.”
“Alright, give me a call when she’s awake.” Bucky nods and sets you on a gurney while paramedics rush to try and stop the bleeding as Bucky watches in fear. Even though you and him never put a label on whatever it is the two of you are, he still feels protective over you and the knowledge that somebody hurt you has him seeing red.
“We’ll get her stable in no time. Would you like to come to the hospital with her?” The paramedic asks, a tablet in his hands as he logs you into the system.
“Yeah. I’ll come with her.” He hops in the ambulance and grabs onto your hand, tugging his lip in between his teeth. Why wouldn’t she tell me she was hurt? Why would she keep it a secret? Your hand tries to move the oxygen mask to the side but Bucky beats you to it. “What is it?"
“Sharon. Sharon did it.” Bucky’s blood runs cold. Sharon has been with them this whole time and was helping them, so why would she go and stab you? “She’s the one behind everything. She’s the real one we’re after.”
“Ok, doll. We’ll get this figured out. Just rest for now.” Bucky places the mask back on you as he seethes. As soon as you’re better and out of harm's way, he is going to hunt down Sharon Carter and make her pay.

I remember seeing a post where you mentioned how tfatws is the most conservative leaning show in the mcu and I can see why (the pro-military stance and the flag smashers being the more "left-wing" type of villains and they're the only ones that were all killed off without any chance of redemption). Are you worried about captain america 4 also falling into this and how do you think they'll or they should rectify these issues in the movie?
I'm pretty much expecting Cap 4 to be in the same way. Maybe not full-on right-wing patriotism, but definitely along the lines of "America is good, despite its problems". I can see the movie catering to the more moderate/centrist crowd, that both the far left and the far right are equally bad.
In terms of rectifying the issue, the easiest way would be to pair Sam Wilson up with someone who represents more progressive ideals. Sam is a moderate/centrist, so maybe he needs someone who can challenge him on his views without resorting to violence. Off the top of my head, Michelle Jones-Watson could fill in that role. I'm sure Zendaya would be down to do a Captain America movie.
Another easy solution: The villains are far-right. At least balance the scales out since the villains of TFATWS were far-left. Sam isn't biased, he just fights any group involved in terrorism.

No but like, if MCU-Sharon really does end up being a villain, I need these St*cky-turned-SamB*cky shippers and B*cky stans to realize that those two wouldn’t hate Sharon and turn their back on her.
I know that’s something y’all weirdos want them to do cuz y’all have hated Sharon from the moment she joined the MCU, but like… These are the same dudes that had several chances to kill Karli when she was doing crazy shit, BUT THEY DIDN’T!
Why? Because they knew that deep down, she was just hurting and taking her anger out on the world, but they believed she could change and do better! So if they’d do that for Karli, why wouldn’t they do the same for Sharon?
Anyways, I can't wait for Secret Invasion to confirm that FATWS-Sharon Carter is either a Skull or working undercover for Fury as the Power Broker! Then we can finally move on from this villain-Sharon bullshit and I can get back the Sharon I know and love 😁

i am catching up to marvel shows and i have been loving the antagonists like they aren’t all really pure evil but instead a lot of them r just radicals about ideals that aren’t necessarily evil
like maya from hawkeye and karli from fatws and najma from ms marvel
so good they have all been so well written

As I was reading your description I was like “I am so submitting Karli from FATWS” and then I saw that you auto included the Flag Smashers! Yay! So here’s my propaganda: their catchphrase is “One World, One People,” which quite literally sounds like a Bono charity event, but I’m supposed to believe they’re evil villains?? Lmfao. Hate that they made Sam give the speech at the end that was like “shame on you all for killing this teenage girl with your racist oppression. I’m still gonna help you out as Captain America, but… shame on you. Go home to your fabulous mansions and think about what you did.”
