HEAVEN ON EARTH
There was a time when I administered the last sacrament to a dying old lady. About 10 minutes after she received the anointing, she passed away. The family had a very good disposition about her death, and one of the daughters approached me and said, “Father, she has gone to heaven. She is up there. “But one of the grandchildren butted in and remarked,” Father, she has gone to heaven. She is with…

going absolutely insane over the symbolism of wylan touching the broken key on the piano. to himself, to his father, he is that key. he is the the note that doesn’t work, that throws off the melody. he is the useless, defective thing that sits there and does nothing. he is the broken piece, expendable, easily replaced by another. and it hurts so bad, because you can see on his face that he’s thinking the same thing

i think about kaz and wylan’s relationship a lot and how kaz is kind of the only in the crows that can truly understand wylan and his disability and he never lets wylan feel any less for it, kaz speaks of his talents and courage and i think it’s just amazing
these are some of the scenes i love but there’s definitely more
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i especially love this scene, the fact that kaz accommodates for the fact that wylan can’t read, like it’s literally that easy

I don't know if this had been said before but I just reached this certain part in Crooked Kingdom again and it took me four or five rereads, but now it flicked a switch.
I see people call Kaz dramatic for this statement all the time:
"My mother is Ketterdam. She birthed me in the harbor. And my father is profit. I Honor him daily."
And yes, at first sight it does sound dramatic. But actually, it's the truth if we think about it.
Kaz himself said it: Jordie and he died these years ago, but Kaz was reborn. In Ketterdam, when he was escaping the deathboat on the waters of the city. It's not just a dramatic saying, but some kind of actual fact, dressed in a metaphor.
And his father profit? It was a foul mercher deal that led to his rebirth. He wants to get his revenge and destroy Rollins and getting rich is one part of it. So it also makes kind of sense.
I hope anyone can get where I'm coming from, it made a lot of sense in my mind.

"haha wylan walks in on jesper kissing the wrong guy" yes funny but moving on, have you ever wondered why Wylan was up there in the first place. Because the last he'd seen of Jesper was him being yelled at by Colm to explain what was going on or Colm would "tan your hide so bad you won't be able to sit down for two weeks". Everyone else finds Jesper getting full government-named very funny, but to Wylan this threat would not seem empty - that is just what happens when sons make mistakes. Consider that he wanted to check on Jesper, to see if he was alright, because though it's not really addressed directly, the story gives us several moments of Wylan not trusting Colm and trying to "protect" Jesper from him. Wylan had been isolated to the point where he only knew one father-son relationship, or even one relationship at all, which was between him and Van Eck. Why would he trust Colm? Maybe he just wandered into the room for a silly plot convenience, but I think he was there to assess the damage and be there for Jesper in case the thing that happens between fathers and their sons happened to him.

today I am obsessed with thoughts about Wylan, Marya and Jesper destroying Jan's stuff
Jesper proposed to destroy something that reminds Wylan about his father, and he was thinking that it would be like 3-4 things that they would ruin together to release tension, and then they would do some declutter like normal people do: sell something, throw something out
And then they destroyed a few things of Jan, and Wylan looked so happy after it, all smiling and flushing, and he said that it was really helpful, so Jesper was just glad that he proposed something that actually helped Wylan, who still sometimes moved around the house like he is expecting Jan to enter the room every second
he totally thought about this as about one-time thing, but the next day he woke up to see Wylan sitting on the bed with a scheming face. Then Wylan understood that Jesper was awake and asked: "What do you think about drowning something in the canal tonight?"
"Are we talking about a person? Because I'm pretty sure that Kuwei is in Ravka", joked Jesper, and Wylan hit him with a pillow. "I am talking about those awful figurines from my father’s cabinet"
So they drowned those absolutely tasteless and ridiculously expensive porcelain figurines
And then Wylan asked next week in the middle of the breakfast: "What about some skeet shooting?" and this is how they got rid of the favourite dinner service of Jan
And then, one day, Jesper found himself helping Wylan to take out to the garden table from Jan’s cabinet, and Marya, who is sitting in the garden and having her afternoon tea, just calmly watching her son and his boyfriend setting the table on fire (this is one of the good days when she almost sure that she is remembering everything)
And Wylan came to her and kissed her on the cheek with: "Mom, is everything fine?"
And she smiled into the cup and said: "Yes, fire is very cosy, Wylan. Actually, what do you think about bringing Jan's formal portrait here?"

Father! Kaz Brekker x gn! Reader - One for the barrel
A/n: Once again, do not read the request if you don't want the fic to be spoiled! Also I used my Oc's from my Claws fic, you don't have to read it (it's not connected lol) but it does introduce the characters well!
Request (by anon): Could you do another father Kaz x child reader where they are the 3rd and forgotten child. Maybe the reader sneaks out a lot cause of teen rebellious years in hopes of Kaz noticing them (maybe inej is out with one kid again and Kaz has the second kid for the crow club). In reality Kaz knows the reader sneaks out and always stays up to ensure they are home safe.
Maybe angst of someone following the reader home (your choice as to whether reader knows or oblivious) and Kaz hears the two footsteps and Kaz sorts it in his own way. Fluff at the end of course
sorry for it being so long 😂 I loved Claws so much and it fit the characters so well.
Warning: death, killing, swearing, gangs, I think that's it? You have been warned!
The three P's:
[Pronouns used: you/your] [Pov: 2nd person] [Pairing: (parental) kaz x reader, (parental) inej x reader, (platonic) sister oc x reader, (platonic) brother oc x reader]
Tumblr media
Kaz knew his children like he knew money.
Jordie is a business man through and through, he was always interested in taking over the Crow Club since he was a little boy. Numbers came to him like the flick of hat, and although it took time, Jordie had always been destined for the Crow Club. Then there is Allea, who's acrobatic tricks neared the perfection of her mother's, and when she was born she was wailing like the sea. Kaz knew that Allea's feet would almost always want a rocking platform underneath her feet.
Then there's you.
You weren't like your brother and sister, in Kaz's eyes you weren't the best at the books, nor Inej's acrobatic moves. That did not mean you were terrible, you were probably better than most people could ever hope to be, you just weren't what they expected you to be.
Maybe Kaz should have known that would've happened, you were the unexpected child originally as he and Inej did not want more children, you just didn't fit. Although you continued to surprise him everyday, and Kaz absolutely adored you for it.
He always wished you could see it, Kaz might've not been the best at showing his feeling but for the first time he wished you could have seen how proud he was of you for surprising him.
He's just disappointed with how you're surprising him this time.
You were sneaking out every night, without telling anyone where you were going nor why, and as far as Kaz was concerned it was an idiotic violation of your own safety.
But he never said a thing, he could sense how you felt, how lost you've been for a while and he knew you were just trying to find your way. So instead of telling you off, every night he would stay up and pray to his Wife's saints as you go off into the night. He would've tried to follow you but you seemed to disappear without a trace, and the fact that he couldn't hear your footsteps made it nearly impossible. It was a unique talent that your siblings did not possess, it made him think of your mother. Though like how he could sense Inej's presence he could sense yours.
Therefore when he heard footsteps instead of just sensing your presence he knew something was entirely wrong.
_______
You were walking back from the Slat without a smile or any emotion at all on your face.
You were being followed, of course you were aware of the idiot Razor Gull attempting to stalk you.
You were nearly to your house when you decided it was time to act, you were bored with this "spy" technique.
Abruptly, completely out of no where you flicked out a knife and threw it with exact precision at the Razor Gull's stomach.
They cried out in pain and clawed at their stomach, before deciding they should probably try to defend themself and pulled out a knife of their own dagger.
"They're coming Y/n Brekker-" They started.
"Actually," You smirked. "It's Y/n Ghafa-Brekker."
Quickly, you pulled out a sliver gun with a crow on the barrel and shot the opposing gang member in the head.
That'll ought to teach the assholes to mind their own goddamn business.
"Y/n?" A shocked, gruff voice came from behind you.
You turned around to see your dad, Kaz Brekker himself standing before you with a shocked and furious face.
"Motherfucker."
Kaz was certainly a mess, he was pacing the house while giving you a lecture.
"You can't be apart of the Dregs! Inej and I have extensively kept you guys away from the barrel." He growled while running an hand through his hair. "How the hell did you manage to just do exactly that!" He yelled.
You rolled your eyes as you fiddled with the handcuffs that were around your one wrist and the other clasped around the chair you are currently sitting on. Your dad had handcuffed you to the chair in a panic so you won't "run away."
"I'm actually the leader of the Dregs." You shrugged indifferently and stood up as the handcuffs dropped to the floor.
Apparently you also had your father's lock picking skills as well, Kaz was wondering how much you truly were like him and Inej. You did certainly remind him of the two of them when they were younger.
"And what did you expect dad?" You giggle a bit.
"One child for the land, one for the ocean, now one for the barrel."
Kaz sighs and dragged his hands over his face.
"Your mother's going to fucking kill me!"

I think a lot about The Bathroom Scene™ and how Kaz's selfless actions towards Inej are contrasted with their discussion about whether he's any different from Pekka, but Chapter 26 as a whole also does a lot to show how much Kaz cares about all of his Crows and not just Inej. He spends a lot of time in that chapter thinking about how he's probably about to die, and yet he does everything in his power to make sure his Crows get out alive.
He specifically zeroes on Inej's safety, of course (because when isn't Kaz focused on her?) but his actions, dialogue, and internal monologue are all entirely centered around how guilty he feels for getting everyone into this mess and how desperate he is to make sure he's the only collateral damage of his own scheme at the end of the day:
Kaz sits down and (more or less) fully explains his entire plan to the Crows instead of keeping them in the dark
Kaz gives Jesper's dad the only protection he's still able to give: his own family's name and reputation
Kaz ruminates on why he called Jesper by his brother's name and implicitly acknowledges that it's because he's scared to recognize Jordie in Jesper (that he's afraid to lose another brother)
Kaz thinks "But they’d landed in a trap, and if he had to chew his paw off to get them out of it, then that was what he would do."
Kaz pays off Inej's contract by liquidating "every asset he had" and explicitly tells her "I don't want you to be beholden to Per Haskell. Or me."
Kaz tells Inej about his emergency money stash and charges her with getting everyone out of the city safely if he doesn't come back from the Slat
Kaz tells her "Whatever happens to me, survive this city. Get your ship, have your vengeance, carve your name into their bones. But survive this mess I’ve gotten us into."
Kaz leaves on a suicide mission, telling Inej not to follow, because if he's going to die he wants to be the only one in active danger
And of course Kaz had already offered to serve himself up on a silver platter to the stadwatch and give them a way out even before he came up with the auction plan (though we don't get Kaz's point of view of The Clocktower Fight, I suspect it's also why he picked that fight with Jesper: he knew Jesper would never leave him to die unless he made him mad enough to "walk away" for once in his life).
What separates Kaz from other Barrel Bosses like Pekka isn't just that he would never sell a person or con/otherwise harm children. It's that at his lowest, when all the bravado and scheming and masks are stripped away, Kaz chooses to put himself on the line and sacrifice his own safety over putting his people in any more danger than they have to be. Because despite his ruthlessness and casual assholery, Kaz simply doesn't have it in him to watch those he cares about get hurt if he can prevent it. He ended Chapter 26 saying he intended to leave damage behind when he's gone, but also spent the entirety of the Geldrenner chapters spending time and effort and money he didn't have to minimize the damage as much as possible for his friends (his new family) if the worst should happen to him.
So he gives them a safe place to land where the gangs won't find them. He tries to push them away and make them mad enough that they won't grieve him when he dies. He gives them multiple ways out even if none of those options guarantee his own safety. He gives them money and as much safety as he can provide with the whole city out for their blood. He gives Inej her freedom. And he gives them time to rest, recharge, and prepare for whichever plan they end up doing while he goes off to stage a coup he's not sure he'll come back from.
This is all to say: Kaz could never be Pekka, no matter how tough of a game he talks about burning everything to the ground, because Kaz cares too much to ever become Pekka. Even as he continues to pretend not to care about anything but the money, his love for his city and his Crows are baked into every one of his thoughts and actions in those chapters. Unlike Pekka, who flees first Ketterdam and then Kerch entirely when his son is in (percieved) danger, Kaz stays to fight for the city he bent to his will. And unlike Per Haskell, who lets other people do his dirty work and sells out at the first opportunity for glory, Kaz puts himself on the front lines first even when doing so comes at a great cost to himself.
Pekka chases money and power for their own sake. Per Haskell chases money and power for the decadence, glory, and laziness it allows him to get away with. Kaz chases money and power because he knows what it's like to be powerless and wants to, in his own weird way, protect others from suffering his trauma and himself from losing anyone else he cares about. And that's why even at his most unhinged Kaz could never become Pekka Rollins: his quest for power and fame and riches comes from a fundamentally different place. Kaz Brekker doesn't need a reason, but he has at least six at all times during the course of the duology (the Crows+Jordie)...and while those reasons are often filtered through his two primary reasons (revenge for Jordie and Inej's freedom, safety, and happiness), none of them are ever far from his mind.

“How do you do it?” Wylan asked.
“Do what?” Kaz asked. His eyes did not look up from the document he stared down at.
“Make people scared of you.”
Slowly, Kaz’s eyes raised to Wylan’s face.
“Well,” he said dryly, “first I learned to steal everyone’s things. Then I learned how to murder people. Then, after that, I learned how to steal from them and kill them at the same time.”
