I was walking to the subway last night, when it occurred to me that there’s no way Tech doesn’t have an in-universe fan club.

After he wins that riot race, he immediately became a number of people’s favorite racer, and the fact that he disappeared absolutely fueled their fervor. People spend inordinate amounts of time breaking down his strategy. There are definitely message boards on the holonet speculating about his “real” identity and “where is he now?” Tech-stans fight with dudebro equivalents about whether or not his win was a fluke.

My evidence? I know how fandom works.

Tech did NOT want to be the racer.

Yes, he pulled off a stellar performance utilizing his exceptional piloting skills in a sport he found fascinating, but he did not want to. He wasn't showing off. He wasn't proving a point. He had to race, and he made that decision on his own. This was Tech being the hero for all the right reasons.

It was clear from the moment Millegi spoke of forfeiting and Cid began wringing her hands that Tech was making a difficult decision. The sport was dangerous and he had only a beginner's knowledge of the track and racing craft, but he knew that he was the only one with the power to save all their lives from a powerful gangster. There was no excitement in his face, only resolve.

Even when he won there was no joy apparent on his features. He wasn't happy. He was relieved. He could have easily been killed, and his death would have meant Wrecker and Omega's deaths as well. When they got Cid back, he was not eager to accept her flimsy words of thanks. She had put them all in a dangerous position merely for her own profit and he was not about to let her downplay that in her usual way.

At the very end of the episode, it becomes clear what is most important to Tech. He puts his hand on Omega's shoulder and sends her a small smile. A moment later, he gives another happy little grin to Wrecker. It's obvious he would do anything to ensure the safety of his family and he is happy he was able to do this for them.

You guys remember when Tech was riot racing and Omega said the left tunnel is a death trap and Tech goes "transfer the schematics of the left tunnel to my display" and Wrecker is like "shouldn't you focus on not getting blown up" and Tech confidently says "I can do both."

That hits differently in light of the finale. Of course he can do anything while defying death. I'm sure other people have made this point, but I'm half asleep and thinking about it while brushing my horse.
