“alphakuriboh: I think I’m in a weird position comparatively because I started with Platinum and I can identify there’s obvious flaws with a lot of the newer stuff but also that there are a lot of good things too? I just feel like it’s in a similar vein to Fire Emblem - some things have definitely gotten worse (the overall storytelling, the amount of side content) but some things have definitely gotten better to (the general quality of life, I personally like the 3D models, the characters in newer gens feel more interesting). Maybe I’m just too entrenched in Pokémon as a whole but I have a hard time calling it a solid slide when we’ve gotten both really bad games in recent years (like BDSP) and really good games (like Legends Arceus) that kind of level it out for me overall?

Like I love Platinum dearly but I’ve been doing a Soul Link Randomizer with my boyfriend and mechanically it’s been a bit of a slog compared to newer games. It’s weird.”

I have no idea what a Soul Link Randomizer is, but I’m guessing it’s playing Platinum in a particular way? I dunno.

I think this is one of the more subjective areas, because QoL improvements have been continuing. It’s easier than ever to build a team in Pokemon and level without ever stopping to grind. And there’s some benefit to that, I’ll concede. Grinding isn’t exactly fun, and is a component of why my wife’s never been able to play the Gen 4 or 5 games I adore. For her, it’s just tedious, and she likes the more streamlined approach.

But on my end, the problem is that the removal of grinding isn’t replaced by mechanics that enhance the game. As you mentioned, there’s a complete lack of side content, despite the game going way faster due to SwSh having almost no content to begin with. Less grinding means you’re not getting much in the way of EVs, and there’s not really anything to offset that trade, because we’re still on the old EV system that frankly should probably disappear at this point, so your options are “be really familiar with mechanics of being underleveled,” or “trade old-fashiong level grinding for grinding in the dens, which are worse.” EXP All is great, but Gym Leader teams are as small as ever, while you’re running around with like two dozen options that are on-level for each area, so you’re prepared for literally everything with minimal effort. Like, I’m all for QoL improvements, but these improvements are coming at the cost of the rest of the game. Decisions are made for something they think will be a neat idea, or will simplify the game, but there’s not much consideration for how those changes impact the overall experience, in my opinion. And truth be told? I think a ton of the improved QoL features wind up being more for competitive than the product. Who cares that you can stat drink your way to max EVs anymore? How often is that a reasonable thing to do in a main playthrough? And so many are still locked behind arbitrary decisions Pokemon refuses to let go of. BP is outdated and stupid, needing level 100 for Hyper Training is tedious as all hell, farming Bottlecaps is tedious as hell and doesn’t even let you hit 0 Speed for Trick Room Pokemon, we can change nature but only post-game with BP farming, etc. So half the QoL doesn’t even matter. And with Gen 8 it’s also coming with active decrease in QoL by removing soft resetting as a feature. Their priorities just often feel misaligned, and out of touch with making a good experience.

The 3D model thing is something my wife agrees with you on, and I can’t strictly argue, but I do think they’re a pretty clear cause of some things getting pushed aside. When you had three years for a sprite-based game, a lot of time could go to story and balance. When it’s three years for the 3D models, a lot more time is going into just how it looks. I don’t think they should get rid of it now that it’s here, but it’s clear management just went “Make it 3D for the new handheld,” and didn’t consider increasing their workforce or extending deadlines to make it work.

As for character stuff...I dunno, I kinda hard disagree with you a bit. Gen 5 was still in the sprite era, and character development still feels best in that gen. Modern generations have more time with some characters, but at the same time, you have Gen 7, where virtually no characters outside of Aether Family mattered or got significant development, and Gen 8 offers most of its character from reading a league card rather than anything they do or say. Until my wife looked at the cards, I could not tell you a single trait of any of the gym leaders that weren’t Opal, Piers, or Raihan. And that’s without bringing up how little everyone cared about the XY friend group. I don’t think modern generations do poorly on the characters they choose to focus on, but I’d also disagree that this is any different from any other region. Some characters get a lot of focus and are interesting, others are completely ancillary and barely matter.

Again, subjective, but I feel like everything in the last three generations has been lower tier except Legends. That’s not really an evening out in my book. It’s a faint hope that things might improve going forward, despite the failures of the last ten years.
