I know this has been said so many times in so many different ways, and I have nothing new to add, really. But I am going to say it anyway, because I am just so ridiculously grateful for fanfiction writers. There are innumerable fanfics out there - incredible, mind-blowing stories that are all shared with us for free. Written out of a pure, profound love for existing stories and characters, a need to know them better, explore them, add to them, do something with them the source material never dared. To make ourselves and others feel better, sometimes worse, but mostly just to make us feel.

And don't get me started on the quality of so much of the fanfiction out there. I know talent is an debatable term, but for want of a better one: the sheer talent and dedication of so many of these authors, most of whom have actual, real life jobs and families and other responsibilities, is just astounding. So many ideas, so many beautiful words, so much creativity. As a fanfiction writer myself, I know that it can sometimes be challenging to be creative, to find time and energy to write, when life is just. So much. And yet the love I have for these characters just leaves me desperately wanting to make time and energy to tell the stories I want to tell. Writing fanfiction is a hobby, yes, but for many people, it's also more than a hobby. It's a passion, a deeply rooted desire, even a community.

As a reader, too, I know how incredibly valuable and important these stories can be. I've spent the past few days doing nothing but devouring fic because I've been feeling too crummy to do anything else, and it's been an absolute blessing. Every fic I read was more amazing than the last. They all made me cry, laugh, think, yearn, and just feel so much better. So, I know this has been said many times before, but I just had to tell you again how much I love you, fanfiction writers. Love you with my whole entire, sappy, zero-chill heart.

Thank you for everything you do, all the hours, the blood, sweat and tears, the love you put into your stories, and thank you for sharing them. For just handing them over and releasing them into our custody once they're done, for all of us to read and enjoy, expecting nothing in return but some kudos and comments. That's incredible, ok? You're all incredible, whether your stories are 'popular' or not. So many people would be utterly bereft without you and your efforts, and I just needed to tell you again how appreciated you are ♥️

Finished heaven official’s blessing and I really enjoyed writing an analysis on helluva boss I want to make this a regular thing because it’s fun so here’s my thoughts on

Heaven Official’s Blessing

Spoilers (duh)

I think it’s incredibly impressive when someone can make an overarching narrative in which different seemingly disjointed events are significant without A) putting a giant exclamation mark on top saying “REMEMBER THIS IT WILL BE IMPORTANT LATER” and B) Significantly over or under emphasizing the importance of the scene in the moment. Each event stood on its own and I liked that.

There were several janky sentences and word choices but that’s a translation issue, this writer clearly knows what she’s doing.

Characters were a lot of fun and distinct, my favorites were Feng Xin, Pei Ming, Qi Ying, and Ling Wen whenever they were on the page I was like Ah yes, these pages are gonna be enjoyable and I was right, they’re all delightful (cept the brocade immortal stuff, but like I don’t care, Google assistant is fun) Xie Lian and San Lang are delightful, love them, and San Lang is so effed in the head it’s enjoyable to try and imagine what unhinged thing he’ll do next

Tbh there isn’t much plot breakdown I want to do with this series because it knows what it is, it’s a fanfic ass book with good times, trauma, gay fluff, and fights. Need I say more? That’s not a detractor, it’s a strength. Be what you are and own it because a house with a house’s foundation is a great house but slap a building on that house’s foundation and it fails in both regards.

The only aspect I’m going to analyze is the narrative voice the books are written in because holy crap is it super impressive. Xie Lian is a super mature (or ditzy, depending on your point of view) character, he doesn’t dwell on things, doesn’t hold grudges, doesn’t really care that much about people’s histories or even their present, doesn’t focus much on externals and it comes through in the way the book is written. I noticed this when throughout the books San Lang would do fucked up stuff like make it rain blood and kill a pit’s worth of people and Xie Lian kinda didn’t really seem to care and at first it pissed me off, why isn’t the author letting consequences occur because of these peoples’ actions, but then as it held consistently throughout the book and other people kept being super concerned about stuff, like Pei Constantly asking after Shi Qingxuan (I don’t know how to spell their name, it’s so hard to keep track I’m so sorry) or people bringing up Banue, I realized this is just Xie Lian, other people in the book are regular people like me, this one guy is just experiencing things, going “Well, ain’t that something” and then just moving on. Honestly iconic, but also I was halfway through book six when I realized. Especially since whenever they do flashbacks Xie Lian does all normal stuff. He describes settings he’s in, he mentions events that happened a few pages ago, he tells the reader how he feels, it’s after he experiences all his shit he goes through that this all kinda slips away. In “present” scenes he’ll reference things as they come up but like in the flashback after Mu Qing leaves they talk about it a few times and I find that aspect of acknowledgment to be noticeably absent in the “present” scenes. After the black water arc there is a complete lack of discussion about the frankly trauma inducing event that just transpired but sure Cie Lian, you and San Lang have to not hold hands for the billionth time. At first I thought is this author high but then I realized what shes doing is characterizing through prose which is IMPRESSIVE AS HELL. This may be a point I noticed and am now misremembering the entire series just to bolster my take and if that’s the case then I shall sheepishly shrug and say I’m sorry. I’m not rereading 8 books to write a tumblr review. Maybe if I ever start a YouTube channel

I don’t know, I just find it to be an incredible feat of actually good writing when a story is being told through the lens of the main character and you can characterize that character by simply reading the story and seeing how it’s written, not even through dialogue and action. It’s kinda like the Great Gatsby or a Separate Peace, and it’s super cool that a book like this can accomplish the same thing that makes those classics great. There isn’t as much symbolism or analytical potential but those books wouldn’t be nearly as impactful as they were without great execution, which this book pulled off in spades.

We have had another Trespasser Weirdness Incident at my house, so. Suffice it to say that the Hot & Vintage Movie Women tournament is my primary coping mechanism at this point, and bless @hotvintagepoll for all their work. All 257 polls are up, although many of them have already closed on a rolling basis these last two weeks. Hedy Lamarr vs Sonja Henie was the very last one, and it is a blowout like I have not seen since the time I asked if people throw away their movie theater trash. I think round 2 starts a week from Monday? I would like to apologize for reblogging every single poll, except that I’m not the least bit sorry. 

I posted propaganda several times--sometimes just because a contestant didn’t have much and I wanted to chip in (still in play: Juanita Moore and Martha Sleeper). But I also showed up specifically for Norma Shearer, Claire Bloom, Tallulah Bankhead, Deborah Kerr, a little bit for Joan Fontaine (poll here), Julie Christie (on my mom’s behalf), Gene Tierney, Paulette Goddard, and Ava Gardner. My loyalties will shift as we see who progresses, but I'm wearing the Ava jersey at this point.

You awed, it was cute.

You created an account x and started reading.

You gotta admit, these girls had their imagination on the highest level, inventing these amazing stories, backgrounds, edit along with everything else... And you couldn't even know how to start a simple essay

"You know you've the real Gavi one and that you get to experience the fluff, a few fights and the sex, all of that in reality?"

"I do! But they're amazing" You opened your laptop and showed him another fic. This one was fluff and smutty

After some minutes reading it you were the first one to talk

"See?! It's so well written and the structure, their beggining, the middle and the end it's so precious... Some of these would do great as real writers; don't you think so, baby?"

You turned around facing Gavi who's expression was unreadable "Love?"

"You're right they're pretty amazing" He nods "On the other hand, way too explicit, it feels a little uncomfortable reading all those things about myself and at the same time boosts my ego up" You roll your eyes "Good side of this is that, I can try and do all these things they write, to you" You clenched your tights feeling hot all over your body

"Now?"

"Now" He said as you both jumped off of the couch into your shared bedroom. Laptop and fanfictions long forgotten

Yes, it may have been a bit embarrassing for you the fact your boyfriend saw you reading fanfiction of him, but it was definitely worth it.

Can I ask your top 10 fav fics ever (from any fandom, if you don't mind)?

YOU FUCKING BET!!!! I love having the opportunity to list my favorites for anything, though I'm also incredibly picky about fanfics, so I don't actually know (until I start scrolling my bookmarks and listing them) if I'll reach a whole 10 favorites!! But I might! (Note: these are in no particular order)

What I Want From You is Sweet by VampireFaun (Heaven Official's Blessing) [And basically every other work that she's written! But some of my other top favorites of hers are The Thing That Was Not His Highness and Beast With Two Backs]: When I can't get a fanfic out of my head, I usually end up drawing an illustration based on it, if I'm bold enough to risk depicting an author's precious words (rare). This is my MOST re-read fic and I won't ever stop. It doesn't help that VampireFaun/Deer is a WONDERFUL PERSON and I love her personality so much. She's an incredible writer!

Tenfold by dgalerab (Bungou Stray Dogs) : Baby's first fic! This was one of the writings that immediately roped me into the fanfic world. When I first was into it, I was under the impression that everyone just went there to write half-assed explorations of sex between characters, and that wasn't so appealing to me. When I discovered that some people can write entire 25-chapter PLOTS with the level of literacy that matches what I hoped to read??? I was hooked. Obviously you can see in this list that I have strong devotion to a handful of fic writers and my favorites are just the top best fics that I return to of their writing. If I find a great writer, I subscribe to them and go on a rampage of consumption through their list of fics, my fandom or not! Please consider doing the same for those authors that I mention like that!! You'll find so much gold. Everything by dgalerab is good in some way, I have almost all of their fics bookmarked. :') My only complaint about this particular story was that HOLY FUCK THE AUTHOR CUT SO MANY SCENES WAY TOO SHORT LMAO. Please let me have a full comfort scene for more than two paragraphs T_T I worked so hard for it. I cried so much. ANYWAY, STILL A HUGE INSPIRATION FOR WHAT I WENT ON TO WRITE!

What You Have Tamed by Parsnipit (Heaven Official's Blessing)

Love is Hard, Life Sucks by gev_ao3 (Bungou Stray Dogs) : A painful inspection of the nuances of domestic abuse. This one rang true to reality so much that I don't think I can re-read it without having a depressive episode. It's not finished, but it's Fyozai, and you know how I feel about that. Also side-plot SKK! I usually can't stand AUs, but this one fits the situations very well. It's the type of fic that only someone who knows a little too much about how abuse works on a victim can write.

Careful Fear and Dead Devotion by intimatopia (Trigun Stampede) : Yet another fic that I couldn't help but draw for! And intimatopia was kind enough to link it in his fic summary T_T - A super angsty sadomasochistic fic about Vash needing pain and Wolfwood needing to give it. If I don't list any other fics by him on here, it's because I'm such a huge enjoyer of his writing (one of my favorite fic authors), so nearly all of them that don't hit on personal triggers are in my favorites category. He's a master at pinning down the PERFECT depictions of characters that make them feel as canon as possible while also becoming more tangible and real. The ZhongXiao, AyaThoma and Kaeluc fics are incredible. Read them all! However, I will mention that one of his fics that first stuck with me was his Kaeluc AU Northbound & Reaching ! Carys has done a lot of BSD fics too, of which a few stick out to me like They Say You Gotta Fake It and that one Soul Eater AU he did where Dazai was a knife in Chuuya's drawer who gained a body. I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT WENT CUZ I CAN'T FIND IT TO LINK YOU BUT GO LOOK THROUGH ALL HIS FICS FOR IT. IT'S REALLY UNIQUE.

Top 5 works, I guess?? As I mentioned several times while gushing, three of these account for entire lists of the author's works that you should enjoy if we share the same taste! VampireFaun, dgalerab, and intimatopia are my top fic authors, and I've read everything they've posted as long as it didn't contain anything personally triggering - and have learned about new fandoms even! Also, Alaruya didn't make it on this list, but they have a Fyozai fic that really inspired me with its imagery and language. I link it in my Sinner fanfic if you're interested!

I have quite a few other random fics I enjoy, but most were from a Heaven Official's Blessing craze recently and then BSD works that inspired me in some way, but they're not very unique or long, so I felt like this was the best collection to list. Most any fic that explores Dazai struggling with self-harm or neediness or asexuality has my attention. It just has to be written well!

AS FAR AS MY NAME - YOU'RE THE FIRST TO ASK THAT QUESTION! I'm a big fan of...how to explain...slightly dehumanizing titles?? Something that isn't really a name, but a description of me in some way. Something that makes me feel mysterious and yet also gives everyone who reads it an idea of the type of works I'm creating. Of course, my main personality trait is being sadistic, and I love the word sadist, and I love putting THE in front of literally any title because I DON'T KNOW LMAO...I'm THE ONE. That kinda thing. I'M THE GUY!! YEAH I'M THE BLOODY SADIST GUY! THAT ONE! I also love smashing words together, so I was like, I can't just be THE sadist....what else do I like....and that's about it. If I name myself I tend to have trouble ever using anything else in reference to me, so Sadist has stuck from the very beginning. It's going to be very hard to part with that name once I publish a novel and have to use a first and last name...

I wish Republicans didn't read fanfic. Homeschooled "I'm a centrist but I vote Republican" idiots who don't know very basic things like the electoral college existing, Donald Trump having done bad things (even the really widely-talked about things like his love of grabbing unconsenting people by their genitalia), that Jewish people are called Jewish people and not "the Hebrew race", and that non-Christians do in fact know about the incredibly obscure fact that the Old Testament and the Torah are the same thing are a fucking plague in the Undertale fandom. They regularly comment on how "unrealistic" something in post-Pacifist endng fanfics are and then have to be told no, Amazon overworking their workers isn't an invention of the author, no, the author isn't a SJW for saying Native Americans had cities in pre-colonial times, no, Jewish people aren't all rich and in fact poverty touches all demographics, etc. Despite this, they believe themselves to be incredibly intelligent and deep thinkers, which results in them coming to fanfic comments' sections to leave their insight/attempts at "gotcha" moments everywhere. You can often identify them by their pathological need to speculate on what Frisk and/or Chara have inbetween their legs, because thinking about children's genitalia is something they can't stop doing no matter how much the rest of us wish they would.

Giving up on writing and fanfic has been a blessing in many ways but by far the biggest is that if you're not in a fandom anymore, you can't encounter these people even when they're a fucking plague within a fandom. I will never have to explain to someone in their 30s shit I knew middle school while they pitch a fit about how hard it is to be a conservative ever again. I am so, so tired. I have no idea how people who stay in fandom spaces filled with these people manage it. At times I felt like the babysitter trying to explain to little Timmy that yes, Amazon does mean things, mean things happen and no, Elon Musk isn't Iron Man, Iron Man isn't real. If this is what parenting is like I am not into it.

I pity everybody stuck in fandoms rich with these people, truly, because there is nothing fun about this. It must suck to have to just live with this regularly. Personally I wish they'd just go fill up fandoms without pesky things like reality, queer characters, etc. so they'd be able to exist without throwing their fits, but alas, they're not only in fandom, they're stubbornly insisting on being in specific fandoms that anger them.

hey kandi 💗✨ as you know, i am a huge fan of your fics and your art and your fic recs and everything else 🥹 but i can't make sense of how you manage to do it all.

how long did it take you to plan the whole year of fic recs, how long in advance do you decide on the actual fics for each day, and how do you balance this and writing? and did you sort of select all the fics already, or do you still read and add to your recs as you go?

You're so sweet, thank you so much for following along ❤ I started with the planning for these ficrecs sometime last October and have been slowly but surely adding to the sprawling spreadsheet that documents my decent into fanfic madness. I'd say I've probably got the posts up until June or July in my drafts and ready to be posted, but whenever I find a fic I love that I feel fits the theme, I still constantly change things around. To be fair though, a lot of these are fics and authors that I've had bookmarked for a really long time and always wanted to recommend, so I didn't need to go and search for at least half of them.

Still, as a result of this project I've read more fanfics in these past few months than I probably have in the two years previous, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. I've found so many more fics and authors that I love, and sharing that love makes me incredibly happy. Of course, this somewhat cuts into the time I'd usually spend on writing, which is why I have been mostly recycling my tumblr ficlets on AO3 instead of writing anything new, but I'm having a great time, so it's a fair trade-off, I think 😉

The most fun though has been whenever someone tells me they've really enjoyed one of the fics I've recommended or that they've ended up finding a new author that they like. That makes me so happy, because I love each and every one of these fics, and I want them to get the love and attention they deserve. And also the realization that there is so much fic in this fandom that I can literally pick any trope I like and find at least 30 awesome fics to rec for that week is the fucking best. We are truly blessed in this fandom, and it's great to be reminded of that.

it's both my God given right and duty to never shut up so i am going 2 not be quiet about BullDon 🫡 putting all text ("analysis", fanfic reccs, general rambling) under a read more so those who don't gaf can scroll easy 🩷 HERE WE GO !!

K WHERE DO I START . their dynamic, past the obvious matador and bull trope, is so interesting to me. i think that their backgrounds have so many similarities; Don is a matador and is shown to have hundreds of people gathered in a stadium to watch his match, and Bull is watched relentlessly by the paparazzi. but they both have very different reactions to the fame and attention they receive. Don soaks it up and Bull can't stand it, and i think it contributes to their odd, almost mirror dynamic a lot

past that is their personalities and ethics,, both of them are SO full of themselves i actually almost forget, with Bull only being slightly more humble (cuz he can't exactly brag about his looks 😭) . Don is more prideful than he is cocky imo; but he's VERY expressive of his anger and distaste for losing, which makes him kind of paralell to my idea of Bull. though this follows more of a headcanon of mine and not whats in the game, i think Bull is really calm outside his persona in the ring (i.e his intermissions,,, he's being friendly if anything with Doc and he speaks so calm and low in Title Defense). unlike Don, he's shown actually building endurance and managing his emotions compared to his Contender cutscnene, essentially the OPPOSITE of Don, who only gets more sour and negative after he loses. i think in that aspect they're complete opposites but that switch makes their dynamic and relationship so much more complex to me

in the ring i think they share the factor of channeling their anger to help them succeed; Don is stronger when he's pissed at his missing toupee and Bull is .. Bull ? the Bull charge and his gut punch in Title Defense are very telling if his entire character isn't about how genuinely angered that man can be and i think that gives them a more complex element to how they'd work together; they're both sour and ugly about being perceived/looked at (more literally) in a way they don't want to, so that's just another thing that i find so interesting .. they have a BUNCH in common yet they're drastically different when you look at their characters generally

if anybody knows the author DetectiveCapan from AO3 personally im so dead srs when i say u should message them and praise them. i could not stfu about their BullDon writing and im not going to in a paragraph or two here but OH MY GODD. i have always avoided both actual books and fics alike that are written choppy and simplistic, and especially ones that lack atmosphere simply cuz they're just unappealing and hard to make me feel what's actually going on. but their BullDon trilogy ?? somehow their style of writing, which doesn't use complex words or long sentences packed with detail, is genuinely some of my favorite that i have EVERR read . they make the emotions the characters are feeling SO easy to understand and feel even without exaggerated expressions and dramatic descriptions it's actually kind of incredible ? and the bit of humor isn't overbearing, it's just silly and it sets up the atmosphere, which never ends up terribly serious. they write relationships with a familiarity in the atmosphere and actions that have been unachievable in any other piece of fiction ive read and the gestures omg .. IM GONNA BE SPECIFIC IN MY RECCS SO YOU'LL HEAR MORE ABOUT IT BUT OMGG. possibly my favorite out of all three and it's literally the first one 😭 ough i could gush about this one FOR SO LOOONG ,,, i love how they immediately establish Don's mindset and attitude with how he both admires and pities the World Circuit for what they get and what they go through. when Don's out of the shower and he sees Bull half dressed there's no implication of sexual tension despite them being mostly undressed in front of each other and thats actually SO special to me because i had a morethanfriendship just like this and they captured the reality of it in a perfect way, like feeling for feeling . same in the way that Bull watches Don get dressed; they mention he stares but he doesn't have a corny, shocked "omg i hope he didn't notice me" reaction to catching himself. instead they mutually understand that they're admiring each other and they just smile about it . LIKE UGH THATS SO SPECIAL TO ME OMGG. and also Don putting on his - what'd id assume - rosary and then dabbing cologne behind his ears .. literally clutched my own cross necklace like omg that detail makes me crazyy i love the religion mention sm 😭

also UGH Bull's mannerisms .. a little annoyed at Don but there's such an endearing thing about it; he's annoyed at his demands but he complies anyway cuz even though he knows Don is purposely trying to make him a little pissed, he likes him enough to and he knows it'll make him happy .. THERE'S A DEEPER SENSE TO IT AND I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT IS BUT IT'S HARD TO WORDD 😭 also Bull being quick tempered about small things like the radio playing static and the music not being his taste .. and just the mutual like attachment they have with each other.. Bull never says anything about taking Don "home" (his hotel room) but Don knows exactly to get in his car and go with him anyway ,, and i cannot stress hard enough that it's just the little things seriously. i will never ever be regular about Bull liking to tie Don's boot laces, or promising to get his favorite beer when he offers it, or purposely (and patiently) waiting for him to get out of the shower so they can talk 🥹 like all those little gestures of love that show that he really does care . also possibly my favorite thing about this whole trilogy is that they have a very unestablished relationship ! it's never explicitly stated that they're dating or in love or anything even romantic but there areee quick mentions that imply (if im reading them correctly) that they're def a bit more than friends i.e Don mentioning how he thought his skin would burn from being in Bull's shower water temps ,, but the fact that it's not an established relationship and they don't outright express romantic interest in one another makes it SO much more special. it sets a completely different tone that creates warmth, familiarity, and comfort between them 😭

ugh i love this one equally as much. im gonna be repeating a lot of the same praises and ideas from "Suficiente" bcuz the whole trilogy creates the same kind of atmosphere but i still wanna gush about and explain it 🥹 omgg the paragraph about Don having a bald ass head and it scaring away the ladies made me giggle SO BAD . also UGH okay .. the sentiment of Don being vulnerable enough to confess his biggest insecurity to Bull, and for Bull to actually reflect and think about it so long after he's been told and reciprocate the vulnerability by showing Don a photograph of him before he lost his hair .. OUFFFGGHH actually the cutest and sweetest thing ever . also i am a nitpicker and a sucker for small details and i just absolutely LOVE how naturalistic the author makes the characters move. like Don doesn't get up and stand to grab the photo off the nightstand, he leans over and props himself up with his elbow and continues sipping on his beer when he's observing it like any other person would .. ugh i LOVE that detail , i get a little bothered when people write characters to be unnaturally animated in a setting where it doesn't exactly make sense to be, so that's another aspect of their writing that i appreciate soo much 😭 also it's the gestures omg .. when Bull grabs Don's thigh and shakes it and Don doesn't jerk away or question the closeness , he just leans back onto the bed and continues/ends their conversation about how he'll look bad with no hair and Bull looks good without it ,, I LOVE THAT SO BAADDD again it's the familiarity the meaning of Bull's gestures ,, the care that they quietly express instead of directly saying it .. GAWDD that's like my fav thing 😭 there's something so special about the silent concern and care that Bull has for Don in their writing; the small actions and the thought behind them do so much more than what words could say and i think it's super in character for him as well .. literally stellar i think i need to reread and add onto this one once i look at it again but I LOVE THIS ONE SO SO MUCHH 🩷

when i preach about the merits of fanfic to my literature snob friends I always cite ur work (ie the politics of magical law in the commonwealth countries in thtf; the systems of oppression in wfrau) as examples of the real world implications woven into these beautiful worlds and characters that we already know & love

all this to say that ur up there with my fave writers of all time and i would buy the shit out of ur published work <3 hope u have a lovely n restful june

i have. thought about it lol it was a childhood dream of mine to become a published author and i still think of it as like. something i might one day want to pursue. but i've also become very disenchanted with the publishing industry so...idk! i might give it a go one day, i might not. i used to feel like publishing a novel was the only way to be a 'real' writer or to give your writing worth, but i no longer feel that way--and honestly, i think that way of thinking sort of paralyzed me as a writer. when i only ever wrote creatively with the idea that the end goal was publication, i was never able to actually sit down and write a novel--i'd always get discouraged and give up partway through, and i mostly stuck to short stories. now that i've stopped caring about publication and have instead started writing fic for fun, i've been able to write so much more consistently and actually complete stories and just. become a much better writer overall. and i'm also just having so much fun! so for now at least i'm just sticking to writing fic, but maybe one day i'll try to get something published. although w the ~career path~ i'm currently on it's much more likely that i'd publish nonfiction than fiction lmao

i've been wanting to write them fics but kinda nervous I'd get them wrong. my prompt was supposed to be 'temporarily dying to get your in laws blessing'. basically mitsuri dies (temporarily!) during battle and meets kanae and they talk and she asks for her blessing in marrying shinobu. seems kinda ooc and hard to write though, so i was hoping you have any advice or tips to make it less ooc?

Mitsuri taking a fatal blow that puts her in a temporary state of being dead while maybe even protecting Shinobu might be an interesting angle. Waking up in the afterlife seeing Kanae thinking she’s Shinobu at first also makes sense to me.

Honestly I feel like that’s an incredibly Mitsuri thing to do, especially based on how I interpret her as a character! She’d probably be squealing and calling Kanae just as pretty as Shinobu or whatever until she realises that seeing her means she’s dead (she’s silly like that haha).

After the shock of realising she’s dead blows over I feel Kanae would probably ask about how Shinobu is doing etc. etc. sending Mitsuri into another ramble about how great Shinobu is and how much she loves her which would lead into asking for Kanae’s blessing.

Gosh I’m sorry I feel like I’m hijacking’s your story- I get so carried away when it comes to them orz anyway I personally feel it’s pretty in character (again based on my interpretations of the characters).

Mitsuri is easily excited and talks a lot despite actually being an introvert, her thought process can be pretty erratic and messy leading her to often talk before she thinks. Even when she’s scared she might die she’s still willing to fight to the death to protect the people she loves. I really feel it could work!!

I’ve come to a point where I basically treat ShinoMitsu as my OCs, so my take on them might actually absolutely bonkers ooc because of that (especially in modern AU scenarios because of Kanae not being dead in them 🤷). I’m definitely not the authority on them despite calling myself the CEO of the ship ahaha. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, but know that I’ll read the heck out of any fanfic you decide to write about them!! <3

"a symbol of subjugation" by evocates | Don't think I could EVER get away with not mentioned ASoS as an inspiring piece of literature. Founder's Era, the world building so deeply understood by the author that it's incredible to read through first, second, third time. Will admit, some of the subjects and exposition can be somewhat hard to read through, but exceptionally well thought out.

"Count Your Blessings" by MadMothMadame | GOD TIER fanfic. Founder's Era, Tobirama-centric, they got everything here, the politics, the drama, the interpersonal relationship and an incredibly well fleshed out Tobirama.

"Doing the Work" by MarbleGlove | not Founder Era, instead we're set post-Uchiha Massacre with a civilian-OC and holy shit I cannot get enough of this story. A reimagining of civilian culture that live beside their shinobi counterparts, where instead of a complete segregation of understanding between the two cultures they're more interlinked.

"Tsundoku" by CherShare | another GOD TIER fanfic. OC-insert, Kakashi generation but set after Team 7's bell test and omg I cannot gush enough the wonderous worldbuilding, shinobi culture, and refreshing personalities introduced in this story.

"Satori (Between the Lines)" by jaylene | Sakura-Centric, Academy days, incredible fanfic where politics, shinobi career pathing, and the cultures between civilian and shinobi are impressively showcased.

Peg covers her mouth with one hand, trying to hide her smile, but he sees the edge of it anyway and sticks his tongue out at her in an incredibly mature fashion. "You're so cute when you're excited," she finally replies.

That makes him remember to check himself in the mirror again, and as he smooths his hair back down, he hears her laughing. "You just wait," he sneers playfully. "The next time Hawk comes through town and you're changing your dress for the fifth time, I'm gonna make you feel so fucking silly."

"Mm-hmm, while you're digging through the clothes to find that new henley of yours."

"Hush." He grabs her and pulls her in for a kiss, feeling her shake and giggle against his mouth. 

The instant he starts to relax against her, he hears a car pull up outside, begin to idle, and he pulls back and holds his breath. All at once, his heart is thudding too fast.

Peg tenderly touches his cheek. "Are you all right?"

He's not sure how to answer. After a long moment, he steps around her. "Peek for me. I can't do it."

Bless her, but Peg doesn't laugh at him this time. She scurries to the door as quick as she can and comes up on her tiptoes to see through the tiny peephole. "Attention," Peg murmurs with commanding authority. "A third blonde is approaching the domicile."

I literally just thought up of this at the end of my shift at work, so I am not wasting any time and just going for it! Also, the reader will be referred to as “you/your/you're” - no gender identity is specified.

Your leader was badly injured, more so than you've ever seen before.

The entire community rushed to his aid. The ones who specialized in medicine wasted no time in patching up his wounds. You followed the healers in the hopes that he would recover without any trouble. As a loyal Subconite, you loved your leader. You trusted him with your life, and how could you not? He was the one who saved you from a meaningless existence, after all. You watched expectantly – worriedly – as he was laid across the makeshift mattress, wincing from the bruises and bloodstained cuts all over his body. To think, your leader journeyed his way through the Subcon Forest, slaying heretics and naysayers, all for you and your brethren.

If only there was something you could do to show him your unconditional gratitude.

You went over to a nearby table pour water into a clay cup. Surely, he must have been thirsty after all of that purging. As you were bringing the cup to your leader, you could not help but notice that he was watching you. It was as if King Midas himself touched his eyes, for they were shining gold. They gleamed underneath ragged, darkened bangs – a deep purple, almost ebony in color. You knew the sermons well: the leader was one of shadow. A mortal vessel brought back to life to spread the word of He Who Snatches. With this immense power, he guides his people into brotherhood, into glory, into salvation. Your leader was blessed. You hoped one day you will be blessed too.

“Thank you...” your leader spoke, his voice strained from pain. Delicately, you helped him raise the cup to his lips. He swallows the water greedily, gasping with every gulp. His thirst quenched, he laid back down. “Thank you...” he said again, breathing heavily, “These wounds... they will heal, but not as much as before. In fact... it is time...” You looked at him with anticipation; what exactly did he mean? “It is time to perform a sacred ritual. One that shall further our cause. Please, my kind friend... Tell the others. We shall gather within the temple at midnight.” You immediately obliged, leaving the shack to alert the community. Soon, everyone was in a frenzied commotion. Cries of the spiritual and devoted filled the air like birds chirping in the wind. Their daily chores became social activities where Subconites joyfully congregated. This lasted for the rest of the waning hours of daytime. Before you knew it, it was time.

You were the first to enter the temple with the rest following behind. There before the rows of benches and behind the skull-adorned podium was the leader. He held himself up by the podium – his injuries were still causing him pain. But his expression showed no weakness, only strength. Strength for his Subconites and for He Who Snatches. As everyone went to their seats, you awaited his latest sermon and his announcement of this ritual. Thoughts flooded your mind. You had no clue as to what ritual, or which ritual, your leader was speaking about earlier ago. But whatever it may be, in the end, you trusted him. You trusted him with your whole life. With a wave of his hands, raising them high above his head, he began his holy speech:

“My dear friends, Subconites of the Forest! It is with great pleasure to tell you all that the heretics – the fools who honor The Witch of Fire and Ice – are no more! Once again we are victorious, and soon we will rise against Her in the name of He Who Snatches! However, the path to triumph is no easy task. As you can all see, I am... physically weakened. I am powerful still, but not for long. In order to continue our fight against The Witch of Fire and Ice, we must commence a sacred ritual. A ritual to appease He Who Snatches and offer the ultimate trade. For my strength as His divine vessel... a soul must be snatched. One of you will be sacrificed, but this is a sacrifice of highest honor. For some of you all, I understand your trepidation – after all, death is mostly permanent. But with death comes a much greater purpose! More so than dedicating our lives and community in worship! Your soul will be one of many that is to come. In fact, this is not a time of mourning! This is a celebratory moment! We should be joyous of whoever shall be the sacrifice! Our souls are what pleases His Holiness; through me, we will all become one with Him. Through me, we are all His Strength.”

With slight struggle, the passionate leader went from his podium to walk among his followers. Everyone patiently watched as he approached them all, exuding an air of kindness. One by one, each Subconite was acknowledged, reassured by his empathetic presence. Some graciously bowed, some kissed his hand in appreciation. Your leader then walked up to you with those beautiful golden eyes. Immediately as you gazed upon his eyes, they shone with interest. A look as if he had found the answer to all his problems. Your heart skipped a beat. Warmth began to rise within your cheeks. With a dramatic flip of his cape, your leader pointed at you with a smile you knew all too well. “You! You, my friend, will be His soul to take!” he exclaimed with feverish rapture, “Come! Come! Let us all gather within the center of the temple! Let the ritual begin!”

You could not believe it. You of all Subconites! Chosen by His vessel as his sacrifice! Oh, what a night – what a joyous night! Your heart raced with such vigor, you thought you were about to faint in your leader's arms. But you did not; no, you didn't! You were awake still. You were not dreaming. You were holding hands with your beloved leader and everyone cheered for you! They cheered for your sacrifice! Instead of death, your mind was filled with thoughts of him. Only him.

And you were going to spend the rest of your life with him.

The candles were lit. The circle was drawn in blood. Hooded Subconites gathered around you and your leader. Strange, alien words echoed throughout the darkened temple, chanting to the beat of a small drum. Your hand still holding his, you marveled at this ritual. You could not be any more happier. “My friend...” your leader whispered to you, “Thank you for offering me water earlier ago. I appreciate it. In fact... Thank you for everything. For being here with me. I promise that your kindness will never be forgotten.” You smiled, tears flowing from your eyes. The chanting continued as your leader raised an ornate dagger from his holster, a sacrificial tool of fine steel and gold. He gently pulls you towards him, making you turn his back towards him. He presses himself against you. You could feel his rising and falling of his chest against your back. You jolt in surprise as he wrapped an arm around your waist, caressing your hip and stomach with a tenderness you never felt before. This closeness between you two was electrifying! Then the cold, steel blade touched your neck, ready for the kill. Subconsciously, as if by nature, you tilted your head back, letting out a comforted sigh. Soon, you and your leader's hearts and breathing were in sync with each other.

“Oh, Great Snatcher! We call to thee!

This soul is yours; soon it will be me!

Come to us and hear our plea!

Come to us and set us free!”

The cut was quick and clean. Your throat, now severed, bled profusely, leaving behind a crimson puddle below. A hand grabbed onto your hair, pulling your head even further, splitting the wound further apart, leaving you gasping and choking. Not that you were going to protest. As your knees buckled, your leader held on to your dying body and clasped his lips against your throat. The pain – oh, the pain – it was exquisite! In life, this was the closest thing to a kiss. As the circle glowed with dark magic and immersed your brethren into a spiritual frenzy, your flesh began to shrink and decay as your leader, your friend, consumed your soul bit by bit.

I found ambition when looking for Jack and Eric fanfic on ao3. I genuinely thought it was it's own show with characters who just happened to have the same name as my two bmw favs (I didn't watch gmw and for my own sake I probably never will because they do my babies; jack, eric and angela, so dirty, and I knew of certain things namely Lucas Maya Riley I didn't know enough for it to make me click). I had no clue what I was getting myself into but then I started reading. I'm so beyond glad I did, I've loved every second, every laugh and every tear. Ambition is the show I wished I had as a teen (instead I had glee... and Riverdale... that says enough...) but I'm glad I found it when I needed it, as I face the same challenges the gang has been facing in season 4 as they move on from triple a and onto life in the real world. I like to believe the stories we need find their way to us, the characters we need to meet come to us, thank you for bringing all the characters but especially Jack, Charlie, Nigel, Asher and Jade to life, joining them on their journeys throughout the show and seeing parts of myself - good and bad - reflected back on me has helped me in ways I'll never be able to put to words so I'll simply say thank you. That's the power of good writing, it leaves the reader changed, the writing in ambition is incredible. I've been invested at every step, hooked by every twist. Ambition feels so real, so poignant, the characters feel like real people, it is so true to life in all it's complexities and in all it's ugliness and beauty. It's raw and it's human and it's about community and hope and it's about flawed people who make mistakes but are still worthy and deserving of love and who are trying to do not only do their best but do good and it's the story I desperately needed. I just wanted to write a wee note to send some appreciation to you all for your incredible work and everything you do to bring us this brilliant piece of work.

If the multiverse is real there's a universe where I follow Dylan Orlando on yt and TikTok and debate and jokingly bicker with Nigel about Shakespeare and am mostly likely a techie, I'm kinda sad that I'm not in it lmao but I'm glad and so grateful in one where I found your story. Looking forward to the rest of season 4 and in time season 5, it's going to break my heart to say goodbye but that's how you know that it mattered, if it hurts to let it go.

{backpedaling to bmw for a sec, BLESS YOU FOR WRITING THE WRONGS. I loved the Shawn Angela storyline in season 1 and honestly it healed a part of me that bmw/gmw broke. Without a doubt ambition did it better. I love when they pop in and they have some of my favorite lines. Shawn absolutely kills me, to paraphrase ; "oh yeah I could be jack, authority baby" destroys me every single time. I adore his dynamic with the techies too and Jack. Speaking of Jack, I am on my knees praising y'all for Jack and Eric, so rarely are older couples in teen/ya shows given such depth and it's even rarer to see a queer relationship between two men in their 30s/40s. Their relationship isn't perfect, it's flawed and complicated and there is so much love, their journey so far has been beautiful. It's rare for older characters especially teachers and parents to be treated as three dimensional and as complex individuals, they're typically just the joke or unreasonable antagonist, not in ambition. They are just as complicated and as real as our mains and I love that}.

omg hi! hello!! welcome welcome to the ambition family! full disclosure when i got the notification in my email that i had an anon on this blog i always lowkey dread it's going to be something harsh -- because internet -- but this message was the absolute opposite and the most lovely of surprises. i don't even know where to begin, but you wrote such a thoughtful and packed note here so i wanna address it all in turn -- please bear with me for the long response!

(though if you've read all of ambition up to this point, you're probably used to my writing being way too long. ahaha.)

first off, i wanted to highlight, underline, emphasize in bold what you said here: "I like to believe the stories we need find their way to us, the characters we need to meet come to us..." because you quite literally put our mentality about creating the show into words (beautiful words at that). that is near word-for-word the approach esther and i have taken with this show basically since its inception when we started writing it for ourselves -- we never ever expected it would reach as many people as it has. and we think of it that exact same way, that those who are meant to discover ambition will find their way to it (and its never too late to dive in). so it's so special to me to see you say that, to reflect that sentiment back to us, as like... proof that it is true. this series has brought a specially strange and wonderful cohort of readers together and it is always amazing when another one pops in to make themselves known. so thank you, thank you, for taking the time out of your day to share that with us. and again, welcome!

secondly -- HELL YES TO FINDING YOUR WAY HERE BECAUSE OF JACK AND ERIC! as someone who admittedly has grown less than fond of bmw in the intervening years (does our version of ct show that a bit... oops lol), jack and eric as a duo are still who holds my heart because they were that iconic in the source material of yore. i typically just tag them because they are so central to ambition (though as you probably noticed, i don't tag bmw as a fandom -- at this point i wouldn't tag either show honestly since its so like it's own thing but i have to unfortunately lmao), but i had considered not doing so because i didn't want to clog up the jeric tag but now i'm so glad i do, because look what a lovely little happenstance of bringing you to ambition it fostered!!

(also, you're correct. don't watch gmw. i enjoyed my time with it back in the day, it's cute, but there are better shows and the fandom was absolutely horrible. basically everyone who was there will attest to that LOL. that's partially why we emphasize that at this point ambition really is its own thing, because it's so far removed -- and clearly you can vouch for that now 😊)

and thank you for your kind words about how we write jack and eric -- we 100% agree that adult characters on young adult dramas tend to be useless at best and downright vile at worst (hellooo mr schue, speaking of glee), and we wanted them to be fleshed out and flawed and featured just as much in their own right. plus not only do they have a great relationship with each other that we enjoy writing (enemies to friends to lovers done right, if we do say so ourselves), they have such incredibly important dynamics with others (lucas and isa being the obvious ones) that it's impossible to think of the show without them. so it is SO great to hear such specific praise for them from a reader! and i love that you shouted out a shawn line, he is an underrated gem in the ambition story world for sure (and allowing him and angela their due was very satisfying for us, yes, hahaha).
