People literally lost any ability to just sit back and have fun with television, everything has to be fandom compliant, strictly by the book, etc etc. experimenting is bad because it doesn't comply with fandom collective fanon, character development is bad because fandom wants this character to stay where they are because otherwise it will interfere with self-insert fanfiction, character flaws and bad decisions that build character are completely totally unacceptable, any fictional conflict means war among the fans, fans and creators, hate on actors, etc, etc. I'm so tired, why aren't you people able to just watch stuff and have fun and move on from stuff that isn't fun without being a wet blanket for other fans who are trying to enjoy their little fictional thing?

you know, i think the biggest mistake the flash made (aside from losing len, which wasn’t entirely their fault), honestly was making barry a dad
and listen. i love bart and nora. i do. i enjoyed season 5. and i think if they’d left the kid from the future plot in s5, it would have been fine. it worked well as its own single-season arc. but the problem is that having barry’s kids hanging around as grown adults less than five years younger than their parents makes for a really weird dynamic. it also ages barry and iris MASSIVELY. they’ve been together for what, five years? barry’s been the flash for less than a decade. he’s like 33. he’s still so YOUNG. but they have them both acting like a retired couple who aren’t down with the kids and it’s just a strange dynamic, and idk, even when bart and nora aren’t around i feel like they can’t seem to shake it.
i think the problem is that this show was at its best when it was an origin story, and now they’re trying to, if you’ll excuse the pun, flash forward to barry’s golden years as if he’s not BARELY out of his twenties. i’m still convinced that this is all in service of an xs/impulse spinoff so they can keep milking the show for as long as possible, and in order for barry to hang up the cowl they need us to forget that he’s not actually been doing this for fifty years and idk idk it’s WEIRD. and i also feel like whenever we do finally get to see iris pregnant (which has got to happen soon, right? end of the season, maybe? which again, bleh, i always wanted that to be like, the closing shot of the show, iris in a hospital bed holding her babies cos they’re TWINS idc, and barry taking nora and holding her and seeing a little spark of lightning in her eye, but whatever) it’ll kind of have taken the fun out of it cos we already know the kids as adults.
and the thing is, they COULD do some really interesting stuff with that. i still think they didn’t do enough with nora. i mean, remember, the first nora was erased. there’s some room for a really interesting bit of character work if barry and iris already have these prior expectations of who nora is, and she’s so different because she grew up with a dad, her whole life was different. they could really have dived into that, the weight of expectations, her fear that this other mythical daughter was so much better than her, their struggle to understand that she isn’t the same. the angst and the arguments and the mess that would come with them trying to connect with a version of her that never existed and her being frustrated that they’re not hearing her, that they’re trying to make her into the daughter they lost. and i get why they haven’t gone there (because there’s time constraints and because we all loved nora so they just brought her back largely the same, and also because let’s be real, it probably hasn’t occurred to them) but it would have been so GOOD. ugh.
idk there’s definitely room to lean into this weirdness of having kids when you already KNOW your kids and how it would mess with you to already know who they are before they’ve even reached that point, but again, we’re not doing that. we’re just kind of. using bart and nora to help with plot things and to have fun with them every now and then, which is fine and like i said, i love them! but idk i just. i miss the early seasons. and i’m happy to have seen barry grow but i feel like making him a dad to two twentysomethings kind of messed with that and i would have liked to have seen it happen a bit organically over a few more seasons, you know?

mmmm yes i appreciate and enjoy the depth and the detail to which you have fleshed out your headcanons of universe and character but boy howdy does the way you say it irk the fuck out of me because it sounds so damn condescending to people who prefer to envision characters a different way

I'm gonna be frank, Eddie just does not give me the impression that he was bullied all that much in high school to me. Especially as he got older, like he was the school drug dealer, he was not getting beat up by the same jocks who were going to be buying from him later that week. It just doesn't make sense to me!
I'm not saying he was never bullied at all (personally I think he was probably bullied by the people in his grade in like middle school, but leant more into the satanic image by the time he got to high school (which is when the satanic panic wouldve been starting) and people became more afraid to mess with him or it stopped when BS started dealing) or that people can't headcanon and project onto pm. It's fandom, do what you want lol. I've just gotten to the point where fics lose me whenever they claim Tommy/Steve/Jason was going around beating the shit out of him or shoving him in the halls every week or the like. Eddie just does not give the impression that he is scared of the jocks normally. He looks down on them and thinks he's better than them! He taunts them openly in front of everyone and pontificates on table tops.
I think if you take it in that context too, it makes the town turning on him more sinister? Like obviously, satanic panic was only growing at that point, and it was within the last year or two they started pointing at metal and D&D as recruiting centers for satanic cults. (Eddie also like an asshole is walking around with a satanic symbol on his jacket - peak edgy teen in the middle of a moral outcry.) But while people might've been afraid of him, and most definitely talked about him behind his back, that's worlds away from mob violence. The change was startling, even if Eddie might be able to see it on the horizon.
Idk to me that's more of what the hunt the freak line was about. The knowledge that they could turn on you and would if you gave them a reason (or if you want to go with the Eddie is closeted interpretation - if he got outed). I think he probably has been called the freak for a while but honestly I think he's proud of it at this point.
Obviously all of this is up to interpretation, I guess I've just gotten to the point where a lot of the popular fanon interpretation doesn't feel like Eddie to me anymore

gonna fuckin fight some children again so here we go:
people older than 20 get to be in fandom. people older than 25 get to be in fandom. people older than 30 get to be in fandom. you know who writes those 100k+ magical fanfics that you consume, for free?? adults. you know who has protected, shepherded, and guided fandom for DECADES, starting in the days of zines that were sent secretly in snail mail because we didn't have online communities? ADULTS. you know what KIND of adults in particular were pioneers of fandom?? ADULT FUCKING WOMEN. women in their thirties. women in their forties. women in their fifties, sixties, and seventies.
it's one thing if someone is being predatory towards young people online and they are an adult. it is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THING if a grown-ass person is just sitting and having fun in fandom and children come into our inboxes and tell us we shouldn't be here. child, YOU would not be here if not for us. I as a thirty year old genderqueer would not be here if not for MY fandom elders guiding me and keeping me safe through my DECADES on this godforsaken fucking website and in fandom generally. you know who protected me and helped me learn how to be a positive influence in my fandom spaces??? ADULTS IN FANDOM.
so sit your asses down and learn something.

As an actual irl dyke, a certified Lesbian, I fuck with the m/f Sandman crowd, the Morphienne and the CocoRose and the Cocoluce, the Dreamuse folks a million times before I'd fuck with any person who puts out or reblogs one post about how Lucienne and/or Rose and/or Gault is a Lesbian/Bi Icon Yaaas Queen Work Slay and then proceeds to give the other 99% of their attention to the same two or three dudes and those pairs over and over and clearly has no deeper thought or real interest in the personality relationships or inner lives of these ladies.

love it when people are so slippery slope pilled that under every discourse about censorship someone will inevitably go "ok but what if someone made birth of a nation 2 and reestablished the kkk" when it could not be more obvious that the original poster's statement was just like. About a teenager's underage bakudeku fic or something

The whole "obi wan has a baby face" thing is so funny to me. He's 24. His actor was like 28 when the film was released. He looks his age in Tpm he just has a stupid haircut lmao. Like I'd believe he grew the beard to seem even older (esp bc he's a 24yo carting around a 9yo) but like, he's just not baby faced to me I don't get it 😂

A lot of people seem to be taking that "s1 sam is kinda spoiled" post as wank and sam negative/dean glorifying and... idk if I'm just reading it wrong, but I didn't take it that way AT ALL, and seeing people pop off upset over it is weird rn. I'm kinda reeling. It's just...commentary on s1 dynamic? Yeah 'spoiled' is not exactly the term I would've used, but I didn't take it as a negative like others apparently have??
Bratty, somewhat self centered S1-Sam is my beloved. Because he has to be that way. Because he doesn't have all the info --and that's not his fault, and it was self preservation to want out of that life, but the fact remains that some of the things Sam doesn't KNOW he doesnt know gives him space to BE self centered. Most young people are self centered in some way -- this is not a moral judgement; it's how brains work. And Sam HAD to be self centered, because he was so often responsible for himself.
Sam being alone a lot does not negate the ways his family sheltered and babied him, though. Some people also seem upset about this word choice, as if it means Sam had it easy and didn't have to deal with the trauma of hunting life -- um, NO, that is not what I mean. When people shelter and baby someone, it hampers their agency. Life is multifaceted that way. The reasons for doing it may come out of deep love -- in spn it's a combination of misguided love AND emotional self protection that lead both John and Dean to not tell Sam key things about their life. Even so, Sam not having all the information DOES affect his behavior -- even his snark -- but because of the baby of the family effect, s1 Sam isn't even aware of some of the ways Dean tried to protect him by omission; has seemingly never considered there's things about Dean he doesn't know, or aspects to situations he wasn't aware of at the time -- things that may have, in his own opinion, changed how he reacted to Dean about it.
Maybe it's the part about Dean sheltering Sam from truths 'the way a mother would' that has everyone really upset. I think the post took liberties with their read of parentified Dean there, but I still enjoy the idea that some things Dean never told Sam was him trying to preserve some vestiges of Sam's innocence. Liking/exploring that idea doesn't have to mean thinking Dean was a selfless paragon of motherly virtues or whatever. C'mon, y'all -- nuance.

saw a post yesterday (3 months ago now) that was like finale reactions from not-wincest shippers saying wincest won - but wincest shippers said it wasn't even wincest. which brings me around to my pondering how there's this divide of the ship into wincest / weirdcest / gencest which I'm still not totally sure the difference between the last two. but like, if I'm talking about wincest, I'm not talking about them with fucking required? it's just the dudes in a not-strictly-familial-platonic relationship. which to me, canonically, even in the most literal reading they've got a queerplatonic situation, so that qualifies
i think what i'm boggling over is that (sometimes?) the ship isn't the ship (the key is the key, man) it's like, ship+what they're doing with their dicks.
which led me to reading fanlore's gen and slash and smarm etc articles -> looked for a gencest article, reading the gen sam & dean one and the sam/dean one which is understandably packed with the related shipwar-ish stuff and i'm reminded i just. shouldn't read what anyone has to say about ships and this show. I feel like I'm rarely on the same page as anyone else, which is impressive in a fandom this large. i still don't really understand how the lines between them get drawn. but after all that i read, it sounds like people aren't really in agreement out there on the internet either.
so, this has been in my drafts since december and another post/reply got me to open it back up, someone saying if you want to tag the non-sexual situation it's gencest or weirdcest, not wincest. but I think now my personal understanding/interpretation is that those are just a subset of wincest, not standalone. I think another component of why it gets under my skin too is the inherent devaluation of queerplatonic relationships. a definition borne of the aromatic and asexual communities
and who's to say it isn't romantic? if the lines and beats are romantic, does it stop being so because they're brothers? would we have the same splitting up of the ship if they weren't related? (can guess what my answer would be)
ANYWAY. this was supposed to be how one ship has been split in a way I haven't seen before and find really weird. I can see how say, on tumblr, it's nice to have a tag that's just the qpr relationship, but not to the exclusion of the main ship.
I thought on AO3 it would be more clear cut, but of the 282 tagged with "Gencest | Emotionally Incestuous but Non-Sexual Dean Winchester and Sam Winchester" only 118 are tagged with Dean/Sam. and in the 79 works tagged "Weirdcest | Dean Winchester and Sam Winchester Appear Incestuous to Others Due to Lack of Boundaries", 40 are Dean/Sam.
and while I like the expansion of the tag name to include a definition, what even is emotionally incestuous :p and if there's incest in your definition, how does that not fall under the ship rubric
but being that there's 34,387 works tagged with Dean/Sam, and while there's more things tagged with gencest pre-2020, the majority is 2019+. and weirdcest is nearly exclusively 2021+. so, large consumer of fic that I am, I am sure things that would fall under those labels weren't tagged as such in the main tag.
going back to fanlore, the article about qprs:
Queerplatonic relationship tags are canonized in freeform tags on AO3, but uses in relationship tags are synned to the / tag.[4]
and the reference is:
Cisco Ramon/Caitlin Snow (Queerplatonic) has been made a synonym of Cisco Ramon/Caitlin Snow. Works and bookmarks tagged with Cisco Ramon/Caitlin Snow (Queerplatonic) will show up in Cisco Ramon/Caitlin Snow's filter.
which honestly made me laugh. that's a very specific situation!
but I think a lot of this, for me, circles back to what is a ship even, and why doesn't love for each other above all else+life partners qualify
and yet, look at me the hypocrite, because I tag stuff with "sam and dean" that are the canonical qpr things, but I wouldn't tag wincest because I know a lot of people would have it filtered. whereas anything remotely shippy in xfiles canon, I tag with msr. *facepalm*
and the advice/explanation I've received about tagging other people's posts, canon gifs, what have you; as wincest - that you might be putting their personal squick right in their notifications. so, don't do that! and I've internalized those rules.
and I guess there's plenty of people that watch the show and think they're just regular brothers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
spn fandom is a minefield even with my skirting at the edges of it.
I don't know what anything means anymore

Fully get where people are coming from but it does not feel great to finally get decent poly representation in a video game and to then see members of the fandom ask why we can't tell them we want monogamy.
You have almost every single other romancable character in video game history at your disposal for monogamy.
There are three options for poly in this game. Every single other romancable character is monogamous. That's 3 out of 7 options. Monogamy is still assumed to be the default.
Astarion makes a crack about you being lucky he's understanding. Shadowheart says you're bold and most people wouldn't like it. Halsin is the only one with nothing negative to say.
You don't need to explain this to me. I know monogamy as default is hard to unlearn. I don't want to unfollow the people I like. I know there's indie games with even more options, but they don't get even half the press bg3 has and I'm not invested in them at the moment.
People have been asking for poly for years. We usually have to resort to mods for something like this. It's usually not acknowledged even slightly. And now that we finally have a scrap, people complain that it's there. People act like reverting to the norm is the objectively better option. People act like the characters actually aren't okay with poly at all.
I'm gonna go back to minding my own business after this. Fandom is for fun. You should do what you want.
It just makes me sad.

What people think the worst things you can do in fandom are:
Be weird
Make people uncomfortable
Lurk
Not be a teenager.
What I think the worst things you can do in fandom are:
Make what everyone else is making because everyone else is making it.
Make something when your heart isn't in it.
Be a hater in notes of someone who is not a hater! (and inversely, trying to bring positivity to a hater parade.)
Act like you are the only guy on the planet with "correct" takes, instead of a human being with preferences.
Go into a discord server, and try to get the admins to change the entire culture of the sever to fit your preferences, instead of just making a new one. (I don't use discord anymore.)

I love how Dacre is younger than Joe and Joe and Eduardo and Charlie and Mason and he’s also shorter than the majority of them, but then fans look at Billy and go GIANT ADULT MAN TERRORIZES TINY BABY CHILDREN and then literally infantilize Steve and Eddie. I think that’s really funny.

Friendly-ish reminder that if you legit hate the fandom your series of choice has no one's MAKING you interact with it. Block liberally at the slightest hint of one of your most hated fandom tropes or don't interact at all, but either way, fandom isn't worth turning into a toxic ball of frothing rage.
