And another thing!!! I see people confused about how and why Ed and Stede just let the crew go off like that when they just established that they’re family and that they’re going to work together to get revenge for Izzy.

I think all it is is that Ed and Stede need a break! They just want some time to be together and to start building their future together, and their future is not on that ship forever, their endgame is not piracy, that’s what they’ve determined. So while the crew sails and pirates regularly- probably gathering intel about the English, figuring out a good plan of attack- they stay behind and build something to come back to. And the crew will and does come back (regularly, in my mind at least)

Because I don’t think the inn will be just for Ed and Stede! I think it’s going to be a labor of love that they all participate in and all work on together incrementally. When the crew needs them, they’ll be there. And when Ed and Stede need the crew, they’ll be there too. At the end of it all, they’ll all be together. As the family that they are.

well, guess who lost control of my hands again and was compelled to scribble down designs for ANOTHER Deltarune AU? yeah. me. it doesn't really have a proper name yet so I've just been calling it Changeling AU for now, I'll figure that out later.

these would be the cast's dark world designs; they parallel early Deltarune concepts in which the lightners would turn into monsters in the dark world-- with a few medieval fantasy fae-flavored twists this time around. mortals become a variety of magical beasts in the fae's dark realm, with only 'Kris' strangely unaffected... aside from the hue shift and conspicuously pointed ears, that is.

the main 'Kris' of this AU isn't the only human in town. instead, they're ironically the only one in town who ISN'T human, though not even they know it yet. in reality they're a Changeling, a fae creature that was left as a 'gift' to replace a taken human child. they can do things, strange things. animals come to them in the night, and the cool touch of iron burns their skin. they're afraid of what they see in the mirror; human eyes don't gleam in the dark, and their teeth shouldn't be so sharp. so they hide their features, and they ignore the whispers of the townsfolk, and they keep their head down.

they made a mistake, a terrible one... and they need to set it right.

meanwhile, the human they replaced is still out there somewhere in the fae world, twisted by its curse into a cornered, desperate beast seeking any escape from the realm that has held them prisoner all their life. it's said that when the full moon casts deep shadows over the woods, you can still hear their anguished howls in the dark begging for the name that once was theirs. they can never leave the dark world without it. they'd do anything to get it back.

all they've ever really wanted was to find their way home.

there's probably no way to phrase this that doesn't sound like a vagueblog, but I keep seeing posts where US Americans are like "shut up about [big coastal metropolis(es)], life is just as good in affordable smaller cities in the Midwest and South" and like I do agree that there is beauty and good art and community anywhere you go in the US and we shouldn't write off entire parts of the country as not being worth visiting or living in. but speaking as someone from an extremely red state who lived in a very rural county in another red state at the height of the Trump era, even setting aside my home state's extremely anti-LGBTQ legal environment and its abortion ban that it's currently fighting out in the courts, there are opportunities that only exist in very large metropolitan areas (esp. for those in creative or academic careers) and if my partner and I had stayed in our home state and attempted to settle there it would have closed off those opportunities for us. this is all to say that I think it's very much a different strokes for different folks situation and dismissing NYC/SF/LA etc. out of hand is just as absurd and ignorant a position as dismissing entire states or regions of the country

#additionally on a more personal note the truth is that while the rural western us is a big part of my story and my family's story #i think i am still happier in the city for all the ups and downs that it brings #i learned this when i lived in aforementioned rural county and found myself driving ~2 hours to [big city] almost every weekend #just to have a sense of anonymity and to be able to go to coffee shops and record stores and see live music and be around queer people

My most important takeaway from my post-episode dash summary is that the Mighty Nein do end up initiating regular get togethers in Caleb's tower which means literally nothing can ruin the M9 epilogue for me. Like. Cmon. REGULAR TOWER MEET UPS. :'D Its about growing and healing and better futures! And the optimism of planned futures together and the effort to make it happen! Having a home, multiple homes, both in place and in people, having people to fall back on!

and its also about the Mighty Nein all having communal meals together and the resulting chaos. Someone is going to end up with a tureen of soup poured on them. (Its Fjord. Technically Luc does it but we all know whose idea it was.)

Y'know what? Maybe Arin and Sora don't need to be "siblings". Maybe Lloyd, Kai and Nya don't need to be "parents" to the kids. Maybe we don't have to always apply "traditional" familial roles to found family dynamics. Of course you're absolutely allowed to do this, and I myself will probably not stop doing it either, but we're allowed to be looser with the definition of family, y'know? Maybe Lloyd can simply be a mentor and friend, and that doesn't make them any less of a family. Maybe Arin and Sora can be platonic soulmates, and that doesn't make them any less of a family. I think Wyldfyre has the right idea when she refers to Heatwave, the dragon who raised and cared for her and could technically be called her father, as "family". Just family, no other more specific label. I like that. I think we need more of that.
