Familiar of Zero is one of those series where it is literally the perfect storm for fanfiction to arise.

1 - the series literally opens with “and then louise did a magic spell to summon a familiar, a spell which has no fucking limitations on it”. You do not have to lift a single finger to justify why a crossover is happening. How convenient!!!

2 - the setting is a veritable powder keg waiting to go off, and is, in fact, about five minutes from doing so in canon. Albion’s in the ending stretch of a civil war, Gallia is run by a madman, Romalia is doing secret spy shit all the time, Tristain is on the verge of being absorbed by Germania, the leaders of the Albion revolutionary army are fucking around behind the scenes with dark magic, and Tristain itself is essentially bizarro fantasy France circa. the early 1600s, with Henrietta taking the place of Louis the 13th. There is infinite fucking potential for shit happening, and Louise is in a prime position to interact with all of it.

3 - Louise has Pre-Timeskip Sakura Syndrome, which is to say, her potential is very high, she has little to no direction from her mentors, and is rather desperate to prove herself. She can grow in so many different directions and not be OOC. The only really defined part of her is that, due to the way she was taught growing up, she is an incredibly hard worker and she has a moral backbone of solid fucking steel.

4 - this is, perhaps, the most important part: the canon storyline squanders nearly all of that potential to focus on dumb hijinks and harem comedy antics, and by god, there’s nothing more tempting setting wise than a fixer-upper.

Zero no Tsukaima - Familiar of Zero: Hiraga Saito and the runes of Gandalf.

This came up with a discussion I had with @rainixdra.

But

Why doesn't Saito just pick up a wand and learn spells, if he even needs to learn them?

Wands in the world of Halkegenia are considered weapons, and the runes that were inscribed on him that identifies him as Gandalf made it possible for him to be able to use any thing that is crafted as a weapon.

Saito legit was able to pilot a fighter jet without any prior training or knowledge and if he had the wand, he'd be able to attack and defend himself with magic

I don't see why he couldn't just do that, I think he'd be a much more effective protector if he was able to pick up a wand and fire spells left and right.

So I'm not a familiar of Zero fan, but this screenshot was too good to pass on, so I made a manip from it. The main goal was practicing the look of whitewashed eyes. As usual, I felt like I could go further than that, hence the dialogue and music notes. Enjoy!

I will admit, the Gutto Kuru line of figures are an absolute pain to swap the parts out of, but damn it, FoZ was that one anime that got me through my high school years, so I naturally have a large soft spot for it.

I was thinking about Zero no Tsukaima and how little matter is giving in fancfics about the marriage between Henrietta and the emperor of Germania & Éléonore and the duke of Burgundy... because that is a potential huge deal, like really huge.

Like if the Germania work like the HRE then the union between tristan and some elector principate means that Tristan would become something like Brandenburge-Prussia or straight up like the Kingdom of Prussia.

Meanwhile If Éléonore marry the duke of Burgundy and Louise don't marry Wardes or leaves the house (like in cannon)... then the duke of burgundy would become the consort duke of Valliere too... and because the Valliere is a cadet branch of Tristan Royalty for a matter of magnitud the duke would have to become a vassal of Tristan... which ain't good if we assume that Burgundy is part of Gallia...

So if both marriage concrete then it could mean a war between Gallia and Tristan, with the latter having support of Germania, over Burgundy..

Anyway, is just some strange thoughts I had instead of be working.

okay so i know it's not exactly the most relevant fandom these days, but i've been thinking about familiar of zero again, and im having Thoughts about how their magic system works

specifically, the fact that all of their spells require the mage to be using a foci of some point. so... how do they know who has magic and who doesnt? its genetic, yes, so all of the nobility has magical aptitude, but not everyone who has magic is a noble. we see this with the "landless nobility" (ie: families who were nobles at one point but lost their status over time and became practically commoners in all but name) and disgraced nobles like fouquet.

However, given that its genetic and always passes down, magic should be a lot more common. Both because families of "landless nobles" would, at some point, intermarry with commoners; and because it's based on 15th century europe. There's almost certainly bastard children all over the place, with no idea that they had magical aptitude, and their children would inherit that as well.

But none of them get tested for it for two reasons: one, everyone "knows" that commoners don't have magic, so they shouldn't even try, and two, the nobility uses their magic as evidence of their "divinely ordained right to rule", so none of them are about to go around testing commoner children for magical aptitude, because it would undermine their entire government.

anyways, its fun to speculate on future possibilities for the setting, for two reasons:

1) the focus on reconquista, which claimed to be for the common people. yes, the leadership was primarily second and third sons of noble familes, so despite their claims they're actually very much in favor of the status quo, and they just wanted to be the ones in charge, but the seeds of an idea were planted there.

2) perhaps even more important, henrietta is a genderswapped version of louis the fourteenth, the last good king of france. which means that, if tristain follows a similar historical trajectory, they've got about two major generations before the guillotine arrives, and with it, the enlightenment.
