Star Wars Legends: Poll of the Week - Favorite Wraith Backstory, part 1
In the Star Wars Legends novel X-Wing: Wraith Squadron, Wedge Antilles and Wes Janson put together a new kind of group for the New Republic Navy – a combination commando unit and starfighter squadron. To conserve resources, Wedge and Wes recruited the initial members of the squadron largely from pilots who had promising skills, but had been identified as misfits or at risk of washing out of the New Republic navy.
Wedge, Wes, and ten other pilots with a variety of skills and backstories made up the original roster of Wraith Squadron (initially known as Gray Squadron).
Tumblr media
Of these five original Wraiths to join Wedge and Wes, whose backstory is your favorite? (We’ll ask about the other half of the roster in part 2.)
Falynn Sandskimmer, an ace Y-wing pilot from Tatooine who was extremely sick of being compared to a certain X-wing pilot from Tatooine, and often got charged with insubordination for voicing her low opinion of Luke Skywalker and other famous Rebels.
Voort “Piggy” saBinring, a Gamorrean who had been genetically engineered for high intelligence and mathematical abilities, so skilled that he could do navigation calculations without an astromech and was an expert in pattern recognition; he had been charged with insubordination because other officers kept attempting to start fights with him, and merely blocking their punches was enough to get charged.
Myn Donos, a Corellian sniper and pilot who was the lone survivor when his former squadron, Talon Squadron, was ambushed; Talon Squadron was lured into the ambush thanks to false intelligence planted by Imperial agent Gara Petothel, and Donos was so troubled by the incident that he no longer would wear the Corellian bloodstripes he had earned previously.
Kell Tainer, an ace pilot and demolitions expert from Alderaan whose father, also a pilot, panicked during an early mission for the Rebellion and tried to flee, forcing Wes Janson to shoot him down and prompting Kell’s family to change their name due to his father’s reputation for cowardice; he constantly sought to be the best and to somehow make up for his father’s failings.
Jesmin Ackbar, a Mon Calamari and the niece of Admiral Gial Ackbar; Jesmin was a gifted pilot and communications expert but kept getting assignments way beneath her abilities, because nobody wanted to be the commanding officer who got Admiral Ackbar’s niece killed.

What is a Wraith, Anyway?
Tumblr media
Ok, so I am primarily a Jedi girl when it comes to Star Wars, but snark-ass Corellian pilots also occupy a very soft spot in my heart. Han Solo is now and forever the GOAT Corellian smuggler and pilot, but Wedge Antillies--particularly as he is expanded in the EU books--is absolutely in the top 5 favorite pilots. I'm not overly fond of Rogue Squadron, if we're being honest, but I adore the antics and missions of Wraith Squadron. So let's talk Aaron Allston's Wraith Squadron.
*Spoilers below, so beware!*
Wedge Antillies.
Wes Janson.
Myn Donos (and Shiner).
Kell Tainer.
Garik "Face" Loran.
Falynn Sandskimmer.
Jesmin Ackbar.
Voort "Piggy" saBinring.
Hohass "Runt" Ekwesh.
Ton Phanan.
Eurrsk Thri'ag.
Tyria Sarkin.
This is Wraith Squadron, Wedge's pet project that pulled together competent officers who might have been bad at office politics or made a few too many mistakes or whose careers were otherwise dead and would jump at another chance to fly. Wedge's plan was to create an experienced, multi-talented squadron to take on the jobs for which the venn diagram of piloting, ground skills, and espianage is a circle. And while he did do that, he also somehow managed to take a bunch of hard case and traumatized pilots and transform them into a family.
The progression of the transformation though, is beautifully paced. We spend the early sections of the novel learning about each individual pilot's personal (or not so personal, given Tainer's near-paralyzing fear of Janson that tends to read as aggression) issues or motivations and getting some tentative interpersonal bonding. Interestingly, Face and Jesmin aren't hard cases or screwups. Face is tying to atone for having been the Empire's golden boy child actor in their propaganda films--although I wouldn't ever have recovered from having to sit in Ysanne Isard's LAP while she told me I was a good imperial citizen. Jesmin, however, is simply trying not to be a waste of her training because as Admiral Ackbar's neice, no commander has ever been willing to put her in actual danger.
Jesmin is, unfortunately, the first casualty of the squadron, and during the mission where she is lost, Myn Donos's R2 unit, Shiner, is unfortunately blown to peices. Myn has some seriously unresolved trauma (and arguably PTSD and survivor's guilt) from being the sole survivor of his former squadron, and Shiner's loss absolutely breaks him.
Ultimately, however, it's the loss of one squadmate and the threat of losing a second one that really cements Wraith squadron as a unit. This begins with medic Ton Phanon (attempting to) hiding the extent of Myn's breakdown from Wedge and Wes. The rest of the squadron then works to cover his shifts and duties, trying to give him time to snap out of it on his own. Eventually though, Kell overhears Wes and Wedge privately plotting how to keep buying Myn time and preventing the breakdown from landing on any official reports or paperwork.
This neatly severs the Gordian knot of Kell's fear of Wes, and ultimately gives the squad the courage to stage an intervention for Myn.
Having saved the squadmate they could, the Wraiths go on to become a tightly knit family and scary effective squad of pilots with commando skills.
I love this book. The team dynamics and the journey to find those dynamics are beautifully plotted and written, and the book flies by.

Most of the rest of the squadron gathered for breakfast a little later in the morning.
"So, I'm curious," Phanan said. "Commander, Lieutenant, who do the old-timers think of as the greatest fighter pilot in the galaxy?"
Wedge and Janson exchanged a look. "Well," said Wedge, "we can hardly speak for the old-timers. As a matter of fact, you're older than I am."
"I'm sorry. I actually meant your generation of pilots." Wedge sighed.
"It depends," Janson said. "What are the criteria for 'greatest pilot'? I mean, I've seen plenty of pilots with brilliant skill. Luke Skywalker is one of them. On the other hand, he didn't fly regular combat missions for as long as most, so his kills aren't up there with other pilots who have been around longer. Other pilots were extraordinary, too, but ended up drifting into the path of some Imp gunner and were vaped." He glanced at his commander. "If you want to go by numbers and survivability, of course, there's only one pilot who has survived two Death Star runs. From that perspective, Wedge Antilles is the best pilot ever."
Falynn snorted with amusement. The rest looked at her. Janson asked, "Something funny, Sandskimmer?"
"Oh, no offense, sir." The sarcastic edge to her voice suggested that avoiding offense was nowhere in her mission parameters. "But piloting is for the young. I'm sure Commander Antilles was very good in his prime. He may have been the best pilot at one time, long ago. And I know he's a good trainer even today. But, Commander, you're what? Forty?"
Wedge managed to look amused and regretful at the same time. "Twenty-eight."
Damnnnnn she’s rude. No wonder her previous senior officers kicked her out. And lmaoo poor Wedge
“What are you forty?”
“I’m 28...”
aghdgchgvjbvnbh
(also both Luke and Wedge being considered best pilot by Wes. My heart)

My current otp is without a doubt Face/Ton, but like. I am also unashamedly multishipper trash. I’ve managed to get excited about a new dumpster fire?
I was trying to get my thoughts down on the scant few interactions Ton Phanan and Falynn Sandskimmer have in Wraith Squadron. She’s one of the few people in the squadron (besides Face and Tyria) who ever refers to him by his given name instead of by his surname, and that seems significant to me?
This happens only one time, when everyone is giving her shit about her crush on Myn Donos, and Ton says something insensitive and stupid. She snaps at him about how Myn is a better man than he’ll ever be, but she uses his first name when she’s dressing him down. Just to provide the receipts, have some screenshots of the exchange:

And then:
Tumblr media
(Wraith Squadron, the end of chapter 7)
The rest of my thoughts under the cut, so I don't clog up your dashes...
So even when she’s angry with Ton, she’s speaking to him more familiarly than everyone except his best friend (Face) and a woman he’s clearly expressed interest in (Tyria) are wont to do. That suggests that they might have a certain friendliness and camaraderie under better circumstances.
Yes, Falynn is prideful and easily offended, and Ton tends toward being a sarcastic bastard, but I think they could have their good moments together. There’s the possibility they could have become good friends, given enough time. The friendship could have been good for both of them, too.
What I think would have ended up as a dumpster fire would have been a romantic relationship between them. Sweeping aside certain plot events, their particular issues would have complimented each other in truly horrible ways. Falynn thinks she’s second best at everything she does, and suffers from feelings of inadequacy. Ton, on the other hand, thinks he’s ugly and a shell of who he once was. He’s filled with self-loathing. Put these two broken people together and it would turn out poorly.
Imagine Falynn being around to see Myn go from being emotionally closed off to mooning over Lara Notsil. Once again, she would feel like she was second best. Given her angry, prideful nature, I could see her trying to stick it to Myn out of revenge. And who better to be her rebound guy than Phanan, a man who throws himself at nearly every woman he comes across? He’s desperate enough, I think, to accept her attentions even knowing that he’s not her first, second, or even third choice. He would resent it though. He would feel like he’s a pity fuck, and it would be a knife in his gut. They would both be using each other, and both be aware of it. However, Falynn and Ton would be so wrapped up in their own issues that they wouldn’t be able to improve things between them.
They would be terrible for each other, and it would be an interesting disaster to watch unfold. Terrible, yes, but interesting. And because I too am terrible, I’ve managed to talk myself into shipping it. . ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And began to read Wraith Squadron, it’s also a fantastic novel, really like the humorous words by Aaron Allston. This time comes Wedge and the Tatooine girl named Falynn Sandskimmer, the story that Wedge made fun of her is super cute lol
