I'm actually quite proud of Armand right now. Openly admitting to Amalia the reason their relationship was always strained was because he'd always been jealous of her and her relationship with their father is such a great character moment for him.
One thing season 4 is definitely delivering is some much needed depth and exploration of the Sadida Royal family. And I find myself fascinated (not only because Amalia is my favourite character and I have a soft spot for her people).
Personally, Armand is a character I have a lot of trouble having a clear stance on. I don't hate him, and it's true his motives become clear and even understandable once you give them some thought, it's just that Ankama does a wonderful job at making him both outwardly dislikable given his abrasive personality and some of his most questionable actions.
For example, season 3 Armand and season 4 Armand are almost like night and day. Maybe it is indeed that his new role as king has forced him to be more responsible and emotionally mature, but the vibes between L'assamblée and Falling Down are completely different.
Tumblr media
In season 3 he just oozed contempt for his sister, and his actions towards her reeked of ulterior motives. The fact that Aurora has been described as manipulative (even her hairstyle is meant to hint at her true nature) and was purposely placed in between the two siblings as a visual nod to how she's keeping them apart doesn't help matters.
Which is another factor to take into account: Aurora's character and the role she plays in the siblings' deteriorating bond.
Even if so far she seems to genuinely love Armand, I really can't bring myself to trust Aurora. Not only because of all the behind-the-scenes facts I already mentioned, but because her actions are just sketchy and clearly veered to the betterment of the Osamodas rather than the Sadida.
Tumblr media
First of all, her contempt for Amalia is genuine and she legitimately seems to be planning to send her away to keep her from interfering with her plans. After all, this is literally what she had to say about her sister-in-law:
"Ne vous en faîtes pas mon prince, nous finirons bien par redresser cette mauvaise herbe."
Translation: "Don't worry, my prince, we'll get this weed straightened out in the end."
(I haven't watched the English dub, so my apologies if the translation doesn't match the official version).
There's also the fact that, despite being the new Sadida Queen, her intentions in season 3 clearly laid in the benefit of her own kingdom, the Osamodas. Such is reflected in her choice of suitors for Amalia:
Tumblr media
She intended for Amalia to marry Ashdur, her own cousin, thus, strengthening the Osamodas' hold over Sadida politics. In fact, it becomes quite clear Aurora's choice in suitors, only supported by Amalia implying back then her sister-in-law had already tried the same thing with her brothers, was much less about the future of the Sadida Kingdom and more about the Osamodas' sake.
After all, while arranged marriages between royal families isn't anything new, usually the sensible and even most strategic thing to do is for rulers to"spread" their children and marry them into different families around the world. That is exactly what Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabela of Castile did with their own children, they married them off to the royal families of England, Portugal, and Austria.
With that in mind, having both Sheran Sharm children marry Osamodas royalty just seems dumb, doesn't it? It all comes to show Aurora is more concerned over solidifying her power over the Sadida Kingdom than its actual well-being.
Which is why I'm still going to keep my guard up regarding her character until the season ends. After all, we still have 9 more episodes where everything can go up in flames.
But going back to Armand, even though he is in love with his wife, his treatment of Amalia in L'assamblée is leagues better than it was in season 3. Unlike most of his appearances and his interactions with his sister, where he kept treating her like a child who didn't know any better (what she just so happened to accuse him of when presented with Ashtur, as a matter of fact), here not only does he finally open up to his sister about his insecurities and his reasoning for his behaviour towards her, but he offers her support in the wake of their father's passing and even invites her to attend the assembly with him.
He is entrusting her with responsibilities befitting a queen, not a child.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their relationship is finally healing.
As I said earlier, despite the undeniable depth behind his character, it's difficult to really side with Armand in plenty of occasions. Not only because of his difficult personality and flaws, but because it is so much easier to sympathise with Amalia.
And I'm not talking exclusively about the fact that, as one of the main characters, we've been by her side throughout everything, witnessing her true selfless, responsible, and brave self, but the fact that her position within her own family certainly tugs at our heartstrings.
Amalia is the youngest sibling, the princess. For all the sheltering and privileges that can get her, it also became her gilded cage. And for the most part, not even her family was a safe haven.
Tumblr media
Queen Sheran Sharm died when Amalia was probably still a kid, whereas Armand was most likely already a teenager. As King Oakheart revealed back when he explained to Amalia it had been Armand who insisted they let her go, the queen's death shook their entire family, making the king and prince unintentionally turn their backs on Amalia during a time she needed as much affection as possible. And so, her royal duties became stifling, her royal upbringing unbearable. Thus is the reason for her wanderlust.
And then we have Armand's reason for not always being fair to her: jealousy. He resented her for being Oakheart's favourite, despite constantly going off to adventures while he remained in the kingdom by his side. Now, as I said, this was a great character moment for Armand, one that also belies his character development. However, it doesn't change the fact that, while easier to relate and sympathise with him, we still sympathise with Amalia more or have been doing so for far longer because we knew the effect this had had on her.
We all have been someone's scapegoat to their frustrations with a third person, we have all been treated unfairly by someone who, for whatever reason, couldn't solve their own issues with the person they had problems with in the first place and took it out on us. This is the crux of Armand and Amalia's strained relationship: for years, Armand took his frustrations and insecurities out on Amalia instead of having an honest conversation with their father.
That's why it's easier to sympathise with Amalia, because we know that, deep down, for all her flaws, she was never at fault for how their relationship turned out. Because we can understand her frustration and pain when, even with their dying father, Armand still chose to listen to his wife over her and try to marry her off instead of being there for each other when they both needed most. As Amalia called him out for before leaving with Yugo, he still chose politics over family. Everything involving Armand and Aurora is about politics.
Tumblr media
But now that they are at least beginning to rebuild their relationship, I sincerely hope things get better for them. Unless their original intentions back in 2017 have changed, I seriously fear Ankama will still use Aurora to complicate things further between these two.
Please, Ankama, I'm literally begging you. They're all the family they each have left, don't let their relationship be ruined forever.

Yukio Mishima has been trending this week for uh, reasons. He was a world renowned Japanese author and all of his work is overshadowed by his actions on November 25, 1970. You might not want to read more about this guy because he is horrible and disgusting, but he's utterly fascinating and the movie about him is brilliant.
He's a really interesting character, to the point that he sounds fictional. He's gay, obsessed with ritualistic death, a right wing lunatic, led a private militia that was halfway to a cult, and also was a legitimately great author. His life is covered in the film Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters and it's easily the most beautiful film I've seen in my life. Look at the stills I posted above; every frame of this movie looks like that. It's all just a series of beautiful paintings with people living in them.
The way the film is structured is that it tells the story of his life in three ways. His past is told in black and white flashbacks with static cameras. This is closer to how a movie from the 50's would look like (specifically ones directed by Yasujirō Ozu). The events of three of his books are told with this beautifully stylized look, with sets that look like stage plays. The events of November 25, 1970 is told in an almost normal fashion, with regular colors and competent camerawork. The past is nostalgic, the present is mundane and only in fantasy can you truly come alive.
Through this movie we see the ideology of Mishima coming through. His nationalism, his sexual feelings and his thoughts on beauty and death all come together. Death isn't just a violent and tragic end, it is in itself a beautiful act. Beauty is the only true goal of life and creating beauty brings honor. Growing old and ugly is an act of hate; to die at your peak is to give love back to the world. It is therefore treasonous to live long enough to die peacefully. He pities what heaven must look like now; when men died young and beautiful it was paradise, but now it is filled with old men.
This is an objectively insane way to view the world but it is also fascinating. How much of this was what he believed, and how much of it was just begging for attention? In one instance when asked why he moved to the right politically he said "because the left was full". It was a joke answer, but he clearly wanted to be in the spotlight. His shield society was a paramilitary group dedicated to living a virtuous life of beauty, honor and old ideals. It was also a group of good looking, athletic young men led by a (barely) closeted, conservative gay man. So much of his life could have gone differently but also he was pretty much in control the whole time; he was independently wealthy and revered on the world stage. He could do whatever he wanted, and apparently the way his life went *is* what he wanted.
What's special about Mishima, both in the film and in real life, is that he's a smart and eloquent guy. In films the guy with a crazy worldview is someone like Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver or D-Fens from Falling Down. Travis couldn't understand the alienation and loneliness he felt and he couldn't find any healthy solutions. D-Fens was smart enough but not emotionally strong enough to confront his problems or deal with them maturely. These are people that could benefit greatly from therapy (other examples include Joker from Joker, Rupert Pupkin from the King of Comedy, Frank Murdoch from God Bless America, Patrick Bateman from American Psycho, Tyler Durden from Fight Club and so, so many more).
These are either 20 something year olds that are lost in the world, alienated and lonely, or 40 something year olds with a mid life crisis when they realize that everything has fallen apart. People who don't know where to go, or realize it's too late to change things. Travis Bickle had basically no friends, no family, no charisma with women and a lot of rage and anger. D-Fens lost his job, his self respect and was estranged from his ex-wife and daughter. These are people who's lives are shit at best (Patrick Bateman is a bit of a subversion. He is rich and successful, but his life is completely hollow, his relationships are shallow and he personally is very, very pathetic. I need to write about American Psycho later that film is great too.).
Mishima is different. He's smart enough to understand his issues and how to find help. He's got the money and means to do so. He's famous and rich enough that he could basically get away with anything weird or eccentric so long as it was harmless. On the world stage he was a popular author, and at home he led a life of political activism. If he was unhappy he could easily find healthy ways to fix it. His self destruction was the most avoidable of any of them, yet he's the only one that existed in real life. You expect these people to have serious personality flaws and unfixable (or seemingly unfixable) problems, not to be poetic writers that adhere to healthy living and regularly journal about their emotions, while enjoying respect from their peers and fulfillment in their work.
It's a hell of a film. Paul Schrader has not written or directed anything better (he actually wrote Taxi Driver too, so he had some experience with this type of character before) and it stands out as an incredible experience to watch. Like, Mishima's life is public knowledge and you can probably guess how it went, but I've purposefully not said what happened on November 25, 1970 because I don't want to spoil it. It's an event that actually happened but it's better for you to find out via the film than some wikipedia page.

“I think definitely, just like for yourself, get up and finish it because it's going to feel so much better if you get back up than if you kind of say, like, oh, why'd I fall? and sulk a little bit. It's like a great feeling of just crossing the finish line after falling like that.”
—Abigail Dennis, on the importance of getting back up after falling down
It’s from last year, but as the World Athletics Championships have winded down, I cannot help but be reminded of this inspirational story about a high school hurdler who didn’t give up.
What an incredible achievement that captures the spirit of competition. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

This came from an ask request I received, but was asked not to publicly answer. I'll have at least two more stories from that request. I appreciate the person who asked. I hope everyone enjoys. - MJ
Whumper had kidnapped Whumpee years ago. It started off fun for him. Whumpee's screams were the sweetest, but it got boring for Whumper, or so he said.
Honestly he hated to admit it, but Whumpee grew on him. Their relationship became fairly civil.
"I tried to squash the bug, now all they do is bug me. I can't get rid of them either", Whumper often joked.
Whumpee would just role their eyes while Whumper laughed.
"Where were you?", Whumper met Whumpee as they came inside, "you know you have a curfew, and you passed that an hour ago."
"What, are you afraid I'll get kidnapped", Whumpee taunted.
"Oh by all means, if that's what you want, we can go back to that without troubling someone else", Whumper reminded, "If you think that is the only thing that crosses my mind when I have no idea where you are you're sadly mistaking."
Whumpee started to go up some stairs to their bedroom, "I lost track of time, I'm sorry."
"Where were you?", Whumper frowned.
"At the park, I was watching some kids skateboarding", Whumpee turned, "do you think I could try skateboarding."
"Whumpee you have a hard time balancing on solid ground, and you want to put wheels under you. Plus your body isn't exactly in good shape", Whumper stated.
"I wonder why", Whumpee stopped.
"YOU DID THIS....", Whumpee yelled as they turned. Suddenly, their knees gave out, and they fell down the steps.
"Whumpee", Whumper frantically yelled as Whumpee fell down the stairs and landed right in front of him.
Whumper quickly knelt down, "Whumpee, Whumpee talk to me."
Whumpee shot a scared look at Whumper as they struggled to breath, "it.... it h-hurts", they managed to groan.
"Okay, what hurts?", Whumper hurried and pulled their phone out, "did you hit your head?"
"N-no", Whumpee winced, "leg... my leg and shoulder... can't breath."
Whumper dialed Caretaker.
"Hello Caretaker, I-I need help", Whumper frantically spoke into the phone, "Whumpee, Whumpee fell down the stairs, we were arguing, they turned to say something. Their knees buckled, and they went down. I-I can't drive them, and an ambulance is impossible to get out here."
"My cars in the shop. They're awake, they said they didn't hit their head, but they are in pain", Whumper was practically in tears, "please, hurry."
Whumpee tried to sit up.
"Whumpee don't move, I don't know how injured you are", Whumper held them down as they listened to Caretaker.
Whumpee whined.
Caretaker rushed to the house.
"Oh my", Caretaker turned pale as they saw Whumpee.
Whumpee started to shake as they whined. They knew it was bad, but for Caretaker to say that it must have been really bad.
"Okay, shh", Caretaker contained his shock and knelt down, "we are going to get you into my car. We are going to the hospital right now."
Whumper hurried up the stairs, then back to Whumpee's side.
"I had to get their information for the hospital", Whumper pocketed his wallet, "I have your insurance with me", he looked at Whumpee.
"Okay, do you have any neck pains?", Caretaker asked, "I can't lift you if you do."
"No, my shoulder and leg, and....and this hand", Whumpee shook in pain, "my arms covered my head, so my head is okay."
"Okay", Caretaker sighed, "Whumper lift them carefully, and take them out to my car."
As gently as possible, Whumpee was carried out to the car.
Whumper spoke apologies and reassurances to Whumpee the whole ride to the hospital.
"So what happened?", Caretaker sighed.
"Whumpee was past curfew tonight, and we had an argument", Whumper sighed, "they were going upstairs, they turned to yell something at me. Their knees buckled, and they fell."
Whumpee started to cry again.
"What's wrong back there?", Caretaker glanced in the rear view mirror.
"It hurts... I should have gotten back in time. This wouldn't have happened if I was back on time", Whumpee groaned.
"No need to think about the past", Whumper spoke, "let's focus on this now."
Caretaker pulled into the hospital, and Whumpee was taken right back.
After initial care came the abuse questions. Whumper and Whumpee were honest about what happened that night. Yes there was an argument, Whumpee's didn't have the strongest knees, so they buckled, and Whumpee went down. They both purposely left out the hostage situation, Whumpee was in to much pain to care, and where would they go anyway.
Early in the morning Whumper carried Whumpee into the house and sat them on the couch.
Whumpee winced as Caretaker placed pillows under their legs, arm, and shoulder.
"You need to ice and warm this constantly", Caretaker reminded, "try to get some rest."
Caretaker and Whumper talked.
"Thankyou so much for helping us", Whumper looked apologetically at Caretaker, "I'm sorry we had to bother you. I didn't know what else to do."
Caretaker sighed as they rested their hand on Whumper's shoulder, "I'm glad I was able to help, but you really need to apologize to Whumpee, and maybe consider a few rule changes, like curfew. They are older now, and you are very lucky they didn't say anything about being kidnapped. I would have sided with them, you know that right."
"Yes", Whumper looked down and nodded, "why didn't you say anything while we were there."
"As of right now I believe they are safe, so I'm not messing with it. The moment I feel that changes, I will remove them personally."
Whumper sighed, "I don't want them hurt. I don't want to cause anymore damage. I promise you that."
"Do you need any help taking care of them?", Caretaker looked around, "how long has your car been in the shop?"
"I have everything right now", Whumper nodded, "a few days, I think I can manage."
"I don't know. You were frantically pacing back and forth in the waiting room. Are you sure you're okay?", Caretaker smiled, "you nearly dug a trench with your pacing."
"Yes, I'm okay. I was scared", Whumper took a deep breath, "I'll take good care of them, I promise."
"I'll check in and bring you some things tomorrow", Caretaker spoke as they left, "I'm tired."
Whumper walked into the living room, and eyed Whumpee.
Whumpee gulped.
"Broken leg, sprained hand, and dislocated shoulder", Whumper sat across from them, "were you trying to get a reward on how many injuries you could accumulate", he leaned back, "plus bruising and a scrape. You did more damage than I ever did."
Whumpee looked down, "I'm sorry", they whispered.
"You didn't mean to, but I've told you not to stand on the stairs for a long time because of your knees being weak", Whumper frowned, "I'm glad you're okay.... well for the most part."
Whumpee whimpered, "not just for that. I'm sorry for missing curfew, I truly did lose track of time. The skateboarders were so cool. I'm sorry for making you worry, and then I do this and stress you even more. I'm sorry for everything."
"Whumpee, I don't know what I would do if you got taken from me. That's why I was so stressed", Whumper leaned up, "I know when you first got here I was a nightmare to you. Now, I don't want to see you get hurt. I don't want someone to hurt you or kill you, that's why the curfew is strict, but I will rethink a few things and maybe change it."
"You're a helicopter kidnapper, I already know that", Whumpee giggled, but winced.
"I guess I am. Now let's get you iced up", Whumper stood, "how about we both take a nap down here, we've been in the hospital all night", Whumper yawned, "I know I'm tired, Caretaker looked tired to."
Whumpee nodded, "can I have heat to sleep with, please."
"Yes, I'll get the heating pad", Whumper nodded.
Once Whumpee was comfortable, Whumper laid down on the floor beside them.
"Wake me if you need something, get some sleep though", Whumper sighed as he wiggled around to get comfortable.
Whumpe didn't answer.
Whumper sat up and looked at Whumpee.
Whumpee had already drifted off to sleep.
Whumper laid back and listened to Whumpee's breathing until they too fell asleep.
