Who should be the new lead of the MCU?

Ever since Avengers Endgame, the MCU has not had a clear protagonist. Whether you preferred Iron Man or Captain America, it was clear both held key roles in the larger narrative of the first three phases and in the Avengers in universe.

While it has been fun to see the various different sides of the Marvel Universe, at some point the lack of direction has made most of the stories feel disconnected and disjointed.

I propose it's time for one character to take the lead and become a central point in the story and more importantly, in the Avengers.

I want to run through some picks that are pitched and may come to mind, and why I think they aren't a good fit, and eventually get to my winner. But first, let's look back at what made the leaders of the Avengers good leads.

Tony Stark - Iron Man

What made Tony an interesting protagonist was how flawed he was compared to the heroes around him. His fear of the future often lead to impulsive decisions that manifested in villains, conflicts, and even the disbanding of the Avengers.

A protagonist with clear distinct flaws is something the MCU is currently lacking. Think of your favorite new phase 4 MCU character, what are their flaws? Because usually it's they go it alone, or they think only they can handle a fight.

While this isn't always the case, there are few that do the flawed hero better than Tony.

His flaws and mistakes often drove the plot of the entire MCU in big ways, so I want a character who decisions can have a similar impact.

Steve Rogers

Steve worked as a lead for the exact opposite reasons Tony worked. He had no flaws. Steve was the moral compass of the team, and the inspiration of the other heroes.

While there are a few heroes who I think can pull it off, maybe even better than Evans, no one has gotten the opportunity yet.

I think one of the benefits of Steve Rogers in the MCU was him being sort of baked into the Avengers/SHIELD. Because he had no other life, he became integrated into every Avengers story.

So a moral hero who is devoted to the life in the same way could help as well.

So let's start with some big hitters:

Peter Parker - The Spider-Man:

Seems like a no brainer right?

Spider-Man being the spiritual successor to iron Man in the MCU and Marvel's biggest character, it makes sense why he would be the new lead.

He is a flawed character who's mistakes often drive the plot. He is a moral compass to other heroes like Doctor Strange, and currently has no life outside of being a superhero due to the events of No Way Home.

And it doesn't hurt that he led the 3rd highest grossing MCU movie of all time.

So we're done right?

Well, no.

Due to Sony's presence and the overarching shadow that is SPUMC (Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters), the threat of pulling Spider-Man can come any day. So having a lead that can be pulled from the universe at any moment doesn't seem wise.

Sorry Tom, next time.

Sam Wilson - Captain America

Speaking of successors, Sam Wilson is a beacon of hope.

While he has only had a little time as Captain America, Sam has exemplified Cap qualities for a while.

He was the moral compass to Steve and Bucky in the Captain America trilogy and Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

While he doesn't have any particular flaws, this worked for Steve, and I think it works for Sam.

My main concern is Anthony Mackie isn't a scene stealer in the same way Evans was. Hell, Steve has another partner with more of a fanbase in The Winter Solder.

While in universe Sam Wilson makes sense, and he should be the leader of The Avengers, I think we can do better for leads of the franchise.

Carol Danvers - Captain Marvel

Who better to lead than the inspiration for The Avengers themselves?

While Carol hasn't had much time in the MCU, she has definitely made an impact. Her movie made over a billion dollars, sparked a spin-off Secret Invasion series, and she played a pretty big role in the final battle in Endgame.

Her flaws are pretty obvious, she is cocky and powerful and believes she can take on any threat solo. While this hasn't been proven wrong yet, I'm sure this will come to a point in The Marvels where she needs to learn to be a part of a team.

My main reason against Carol, and several space heroes, is that they feel disconnected from the MCU. (This is also my way of saying if you thought Thor, Sersi, or Star-Lord were showing up on this list, they are not).

Carol is human, but has spent surprisingly little time defending earth.

We also haven't seen enough Carol where I feel she is the right person to lead. My tune my change after The Marvels, but for now, I'd say we're closing in our lead.

Stephen Strange - Doctor Strange

The (hopefully one day) Sorcerer Supreme has a lot of the qualities a good lead may need, especially for this phase of movies.

Doctor Strange has been a flawed hero, much like Tony, who has had to learn to outgrow his flaws and demons to become a better hero, but often falls short.

Strange has dreams of future mayhem, strong ties to multiple heroes and even has tangled with the multiverse, our next big world ending threat.

As the sworn protector of the Multiverse, and at one point the host of the time stone, Strange is set up nicely to be a threat to Kang.

Where Strange fails me is he feels too closely to what came before. The goatee, the smartest person in the room, the arrogance, this is just Tony 2.0.

While I think he will be crucial to the fight and probably the end of Secret Wars, I think Strange feels too much like echoes of what came before.

Scott Lang - Ant-Man

Scott Langs Ant-Man has been surprisingly crucial to the MCU narrative. He played a big (see what I did there) role in Civil War, was the catalyst that brought everyone back in Endgame, and has recently been the only hero to fight the new big bad, Kang the Conqueror.

Scott has become a fan favorite due to Rudds comedy and heart in the films. He has strong ties to the original Avengers, a direct connection the next villain of the phase, and has become a fan favorite.

But if there's anything the MCU has taught us about Scott Lang, he is much better suited as a team player than a main hero.

The movies where Rudd plays a part tend to be beloved and make money, but as a lead, his franchise is widely considered one of the worst. Like Strange, I think he is set up to play a big part, but should not be the lead.

At this point you may think that I have run out of options, or I never intended on picking a lead, as most actors/characters are likable but don't feel like they have that star quality/character combo we need.

But you are wrong.

Because there is only 1.

Kamala Khan - Ms. Marvel

Kamala Khan is a kid from New Jersey who is an Avengers Stan. This ties her close to all the New York battles and the Avengers.

Her main flaws come from youth much like Spider-Man. She has not been doing this a long time, but she wants to take on the world and be a hero like The Avengers.

While Ms. Marvel has not been around in the MCU for along time, she has become a huge character in comics, animated television, and even the lead of the Avengers video game.

Much like Captain America Kamala uses her hero persona Ms Marvel to inspire her friends, family, and community, which I hope continues on with Photon and Captain Marvel in the Marvels.

Having a young hero lead the Avengers would be a major shift, that leads to more young heroes stepping up, (maybe forming some sort of Champions or Young Avengers).

Most importantly, Iman Vellani is a ridiculously talented actress. Through her show Ms. Marvel, Iman showed heart, comedic timing, and basically carried the show. Imagine what she can do with The Avengers.

Having a young character who was inspired by heroes before, portrayed by a young actress inspired by Marvel and the MCU, playing one of Marvel's most iconic characters feels like an absolute slam dunk.

It honors what came before by creating something new.

Iman Vellani is the right actress, and Kamala Khan is the right character.

Bucky swallowed hard and then made his way over to one of the workout machines. He didn’t really need to workout as the super-soldier serum took care of keeping him in peak physical condition, but it felt good to blow off steam. However, Barnes wasn’t really focusing on his own workout, he was too busy watching Sam and Barton manhandle one another.

The logical part of Barnes’ brain said, “Makes sense. Both of them aren’t enhanced. It’s only fair.”

Then, the tactical part of his brain said, “But Sam’s gotta go up against enhanced individuals, so he needs to train against an enhanced individual: A super-solder.”

Lastly, the possessive, jealous part of his brain screamed, “Fuck. That. No one gets to touch Sam Wilson but me.”

Bucky’s possessiveness won in the end. He stopped what he was doing, stood up, and then called out, “Barton!”

I'm so excited for Ms. Marvel to finally come out next month but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't already anxious for the reaction from the fandom. This fandom already treats female and POC characters like shit so I'm not excited to see how they'll treat Ms. Marvel especially considering she's Muslim. Additionally it's a teen show, it's about a teenage girl and her becoming her own hero and not just trying to be someone else and especially since it's coming out after Moon Knight the fandom (ESPECIALLY the men) are gonna shit on it because it's not Moon Knight pt 2. Not to mention the amount of racism pouring out of white fans while Falcon and the Winter Solder came out got to the point where black creators on TikTok were getting harassed and death threats for pointing out the show IS about race and how black people get treated in the U.S. (I only saw it on TikTok but I wouldn't be surprised if it was happening on other platforms), so I can only imagine how bad it'll be when the show shows parts of Kamala's culture or if they show the racism Muslim people face

Unfortunately there’s a lot of truth to this. But as someone who majored in Psychology...and since it’s Mental Health Awareness Month...I KNOW there’s good therapists out there and I wish everyone had easier access to a good therapist.

As the car approached Madripoor, you nervously bounced your leg in the backseat, and you found yourself picking at the skin on your fingers. The bright lights, booming music, and the smell overwhelmed your senses, leaving you to feel uneasy. Just as your anxiety threatened to consume you, Bucky’s hand landed gently on your thigh, giving it a slight squeeze, instantly soothing your nerves.

Feeling Bucky’s reassurance, you turned to him and offered a grateful smile. His presence acted as a grounding force amidst the Madripoor chaos. As the car continued its journey through the streets, you felt a renewed sense of determination, ready to face whatever awaited.

Arriving at the club, Sam seamlessly slips into his character, Smiling Tiger. He placed his hand on your lower back as he skillfully navigated you through the bustling crowd. As you moved, you couldn’t help but sense the curious stares directed at Bucky. The whispers of “Is that The Winter Soldier?” come from different areas of the space. But, you also felt the weight of their attention on yourself.

Suddenly feeling self-conscious in the revealing dress, you attempt to discreetly pull down the hem trying to cover more of yourself. However, your efforts failed as the fabric refused to cooperate, leaving you feeling exposed and vulnerable.

“Hey,” Sam attempted to grab your attention as he noticed your fidgeting. “It’ll be okay,” he reassured you, his voice gentle.

In the back of your mind, you knew the truth: you were one of the world’s top secret agents, as well as an Avenger, surrounded by a fellow Avenger who is a trusted friend and ex-Winter Solder. You took comfort in the belief that Bucky still cared enough to ensure your safety.

Emerging from the restroom, you adjusted your dress once more before returning to find Sam, Bucky, and Zemo. You expected to return to Sam’s arm encircling your waist yet you were instead seized by a sudden dread.

You observed with a mix of fear and recognition as the Winter Soldier once again overshadowed Bucky’s mind. Sam and Zemo remained passive which only added to your concern. Though you knew this was part of the plan, it felt all too authentic and it unsettled you.

With your protective instinct for Bucky, you began to move closer to him, determined to snap him out of it. Memories flooded your mind of nights you’d calm him down after a nightmare, reassuring him that, that isn’t who he is. Now, all seemingly in vain.

As you approached, he sensed your presence. He knew he was still performing and knew if you tried to bring him back then your cover would be blown. He caught the genuine worry etched on your face, striking a chord within him.

Before you could begin to intervene, a cold metal grip closed around your throat, lifting you off the ground. You kicked frantically as your hands desperately clasped his wrist, your eyes pleaded with him.

Pinning you against a wall, he paused for a moment before he revealed himself to you. A smirk played on his lips, accompanied by a wink as he eased the grip on your throat.

“Hi, Baby,” he began a low growl in your ear before detecting someone behind him. Swiftly dropping you, he spun around and aimed a blow at the intruder who lurked behind him. You scrambled to your feet, gasping for breath as you made your way over to Sam.

“Stay in character or the whole bar turns on us,” Zemo murmured toward the three of you after Bucky forcefully pinned a man against the bar nearby. “Well done, Soldier,” he added in Russian, addressing Bucky. With a vacant expression, he gradually released his grip.

“You good?” Sam inquired, receiving a quick nod from Bucky in reply, never glancing in your direction once. Sighing, you proceeded to follow them to speak to Selby.

You remained at Sam’s side as Zemo conversed with Selby, the tension hung in the air. You couldn’t resist glancing over at Bucky as he kept a vigilant eye on her.

A shiver ran down your spine as Selby’s voice took on a seductive tone, addressing Sam as his cover, Smiling Tiger. You suppress a cringe when he purrs at him.

You listened to the conversation as they continued, your breath caught in your throat as Zemo approached Bucky: offering him and the Winter Soldier code words in exchange for information. The urge to intervene surged through you as his hand neared Bucky’s face.

Your jaw tensed as your phone began ringing in your bag, you hesitated looking between Selby and Sam. You reached into it, pulling the phone out, and you read the name ‘Tim TD’ on the screen.

“Answer it,” Selby demanded you, her tone was sharp. “On speaker.” she gestured to one of the men on guard. The phone continued to ring persistently. Between Selby’s commands, the guarded men, and Bucky’s watchful gaze, you hesitated, uncertainty ran through your body.

“Hello?” you finally answered, you tried to keep your voice steady despite the rising tension in the room.

“Hey, um, we need to talk about what happened at brunch.” Tim’s boomed over the speaker, he sounded strained and troubled. “It’s been driving me nuts.”

“What exactly happened at brunch?” you inquired, trying to maintain the facade of one of Smiling Tiger’s girls, you exchanged a glance with Bucky.

“You know what happened, the problem that showed up,” Tim replied, his frustration palpable even over the phone.

“What happened, Tim? Say it,” you pressed.

“The damn Winter Soldier,” Tim’s voice rose, causing you to instinctively glance over at Bucky again, a sense of unease settling in your stomach.

“Yeah, I’ve got my eyes on the Winter Soldier,” you replied, trying to inject a hint of levity into your tone.

“Oh you’re with him now?” surprise was evident in Tim’s tone. “I guess I know now why you haven’t answered any of my texts, Y/N.”

“Y/N?” Selby’s sharp voice cut through the conversation. “Who’s Y/N? Kill them.” Suddenly, a gunshot came through the window, killing Selby instantly.

For a second, the room froze until the guard looked back at you and Sam instantly disarmed him, knocking him out. On the other side of the room, Bucky did the same to the other guard. You ran behind Bucky for cover as he took a stance readying himself with the gun he took from the guard.

“They’re gonna pin this on us.” Sam rushed as he readied himself for further confrontation. Zemo sighed heavily, “We have a real problem now, so leave your weapons and follow my lead.” he directed. Bucky removed his leather jacket after setting the gun aside, handing it to you with a reproachful glance as he eyed your dress once again.

Clutching Bucky’s jacket tightly around you, you kept your head low as you stuck close to Sam and Bucky. Suddenly, the light of Madripoor flickered out, and the sound of gunfire filled the air. Bucky’s arm swung around urging you to duck as he yelled, “Come on!”. Zemo had vanished, leaving you, Bucky, and Sam to sprint away.

“I can’t run in these heels!” Sam shouted as he ran. “Welcome to my world!” you shot back as you ran ahead of him slightly.

Dashing down the alley, you find yourselves cornered by bounty hunters closing in from both exits. You glance around as gunfire erupts again, but it’s not aimed at you - it’s targeting the bounty hunters. With a sigh of relief, you watch them collapse to the ground. As tension eases, Zemo emerges from behind a dumpster, stepping into your view.

“Well, this is too perfect,” a familiar voice speaks, you glance in the direction it came from. Your suspicions are confirmed as your old friend emerges, gun pointed at Zemo.

“Sharon?!”
