[UNBOXING] FAIRYLOOT JUNE 2023 - 'FROM THE DEPTH'
I haven’t done an unboxing on my blog for a hot minute! As per norm with any form of unboxing this does include spoilers for June’s YA box, so if you don’t want to see more then close your eyes and keep scrolling! This months theme was ‘From The Depth’, pretty self explanatory, everything is very sea themed! It’s a nice box, not the best, not the worst, but alas that’s always going to be a…

2022 Book Haul!
Hey all, Sam here. So….I was trying to work on catching up on reading wrap-ups and book haul posts and subscription box unboxing posts all those months ago…and I was able to do a few–well, a few unboxing posts–before I fell back into a blogging slump and life got so crazy and busy and all that. Now, here we are in the final days of the year, and I have so many book hauls that I haven’t been…

Special Editions
The Raven Cycle FairyLoot Edition
These special editions of The Raven Cycle were originally scheduled for May. Due to a publication issue, they were delayed until "August-September". They finally arrived in the last weekend of September... and my copy of 'The Raven Boys' was bound upside-down.
FairyLoot were really good about it, they agreed to send another one out. But it took ages to get a response, so it was a couple of weeks before they sent it out, and then the courier delivered it to a completely different address! Literally, one nowhere near my house. Again, I contacted FairyLoot, and they followed up with the courier. This took even longer, but after another two weeks, they concluded that the package had been lost, and they sent out yet another replacement.
So, not only was the first package four months later than originally expected, but the replacement book took nearly two more months to arrive!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dust jackets on these special editions are very closely modelled on the standard covers. The thing I didn't like about the original covers is that they were all different colours, so didn't look that good lined up together. These ones fix that, by all being blue! It's just a shame that the spines look so... basic. Almost amateur, in fact.
The back covers are different from the standard ones, though, and they each feature a quote from the books. This is the great thing about special editions - they're designed to look good from every angle.
The hardcases are also really cool - each has a super elaborate tarot-style design on the front, representing: Blue, Ronan, Adam, and Gansey. No designs for Noah or Henry, unfortunately, but I guess they aren't really "main" characters in the same way the others are. The foiling is only on the front cover, I'd have loved the back to be foiled as well, even if it was just with the same design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The interior artwork on the dustjackets is impressive. They work as reversible jackets, so you can choose the design you want to display. Each features artwork of the character that matches the hardcase design, and the quote on the back is the same as on the outer dustjacket. I really love the artwork on these, but they do look way less professional than the blue/white covers, so I'll have the other ones on display instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other than the outrageous lateness of these editions, I have two major disappointments.
The first is kind of my fault, I didn't manage my expectations well enough. I made the assumption that these would be the same size as the standard hardcover editions, which I own (see above), but have taken the multi-coloured dustjackets off. I was hoping I could put the lovely new blue jackets on these, so that they would match the rest of my Stiefvater books, which are all blue. Then I could display the new books with their gorgeous foiled hardcase spines on display (also see above). It was not to be. The FairyLoot editions are much taller than the standard books, so I can't swap the jackets over! It also means they don't fit on the shelf with the rest of the books. Fortunately, I think the OwlCrate editions will match the rest of the books.
The second disappointment is not my fault. There's slight, superficial damage to the books. It's not bad enough that FairyLoot would replace them, but it's enough to be annoying with how much they cost. The third book, especially, was quite crushed around the bottom edge. I've tried my best to straighten it out, but it's still very noticeable once you're close up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The endpapers are my favourite part of these editions! I love that each one is different - four books means eight gorgeous pieces of artwork! I love the scenes chosen for each book, and the illustrations are so beautiful!
The artist who designed these endpapers also designed the Raven Boys book sleeve I got in my first ever book subscription box - and it's still one of my favourite items I've ever received!
These editions also have silver gilded edges, printed foil signatures, a bound-in author letter, and ribbon bookmarks.
There's so much going on with these books, I should be absolutely delighted with them, but the ridiculously long delay in receiving them has kind of just soured my mood towards them a bit.

Alchemy of Us
So I DID actually get the FairyLoot November box. It arrived recently, and… it was a bit of a mixed bag.
The first item I saw when I unboxed it was a set of hanging pouches. This was actually a SUPER nice item — I’ve been eyeing OwlCrate’s organizer for a very long time. I desperately need more things to maximize my room’s storage space. And I did like the alchemical designs on it, though it feels… like the designer maybe didn’t understand East Asian culture; the spoiler card said it was inspired by the featured book, but I didn’t fully get that vibe from it. The art style just feels… off, and a lot of the alchemical depictions seem very western. Where are the five elements? Their relationships to one another in a pentagram?
That said, I’m really glad I got this item. I hung it up immediately and have been putting things into it. Admittedly right now it’s just a temporary placeholder location for some of my odds and ends; I can’t utilize it efficiently until I categorize all my tlotchkes and figure out locations for each category. Which WILL happen! …Someday!!
The next item was a lanyard and card carrier. It’s inspired by Vampire Academy, and it feels a little… young? I was actually happy when I heard there’d be a VA fandom item; I haven’t read the book yet, but I got the ebook on a discount, and the first couple of chapters are interesting so far. And vampire things tend to have gothic aesthetics with red and black, which are colors I look good in, so accessories in those shades would likely match what I wear. But I can’t see myself wearing this lanyard around my neck…
Then again, I recently got a phone case that doesn’t have room for ID cards or anything, and I don’t like carrying a bag around (too femme), but I don’t want to just stick a credit card in my pocket, either. So maybe I’ll use the case. It still feels a little… tacky, though. It’s not made from the best quality material, either, though I suppose I shouldn’t expect it to be, at this price. I’m also not sure what it has to do with alchemy, although maybe I’ll have to finish the book to find out.
Another disappointing item was the hidden book, except… this was less disappointing than I’d thought it would be. When I heard November would have a hidden book, I considered if I wanted to skip it instead of October (the theme reveal was early this year), but I really wanted the featured book of the month. I already have too many books, though; the last thing I need is a fake book taking up space a real book could be occupying. But! This one is actually super lightweight, and could fit on the precarious top of one of my flimsier shelves, where I’ve put a bunch of non-book items. And since it’s hollow, I can store tlotchkes in it. So maybe it’ll be useful after all. It’s designed like an alchemy textbook, which I appreciate, since it’s in keeping with the theme.
The last item was a Sarah J Maas calendar. I have a strange relationship with Sarah J Maas, where her stuff occupies the same niche as Taco Bell for me — yes, I know it’s terrible; yes, I see all the flaws and ways in which it’s not at proper Mexican cuisine. Yes, it’s garbage. But sometimes I want garbage. It’s hard to explain. Anyway, her stuff is just the right kind of bad for me to enjoy when I want to read something bad. I don’t know how I’ll feel about the calendar, but if it has nice art, then I’ll probably appreciate it.
Finally, the book! This single-handedly made me glad I’d gotten the box, regardless of how I feel about the items!!! I’d been so excited for it when I heard the announcement, and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT.
This month’s book was The Scarlet Alchemist, an Eastern fantasy set during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian. The author is clearly writing from a place of knowledge and cultural immersion, though I do have a bone to pick about referring to Chinese languages as ‘dialects’. They are LANGUAGES. Anyway, the cover is beautiful, I love the gold foiling on the hard case, and the EDGES!!! They’re painted with an image from the cover! It’s BEAUTIFUL. A+ customizations. I picked it up and thought I’d maybe read the first page, but accidentally devoured the first seven chapters immediately and had to commit to cutting myself off after chapter ten. It was SO good. And very nostalgic, of the China that I’d never been in and that never actually existed, but that I always thought I’d come from. I also really love that there’s so much more eastern fantasy in YA these days; it’s about time! The genre had been so white for a very long time. It is bittersweet, though; every time I see a new one I’m reminded that I could be adding to the ranks of Eastern fantasy novels, and instead I’m… writing things that anyone could write.
This month also had two nice tarot cards, but there was nothing that said who the characters were. It’s very annoying — surely the cards are more valuable as collector’s items if the fandoms are known?
Overall, I’m a little disappointed in the other items (especially since there are only four! The five-item boxes feel richer…), but VERY glad for the pouches and the book. This was maybe a solid 3.5/5 box.

FairyLoot Unboxing
Regency & Scandal January 2024
January has been an incredibly disappointing month - none of the boxes I received were worth having. OwlCrate also featured the same book as FairyLoot, but I'm pissed off at OwlCrate, and I've cancelled my subscription, so I won't bother with an unboxing post.
The featured book is "A Fragile Enchantment" by Allison Saft. I've read regency fantasy before, and really enjoyed it. But honestly, there is nothing that appeals to me about this book. This edition (like the whole box) is way too prissy for my tastes. It's got an exclusive colourway on the jacket, and an alternate cover on the reverse of the jacket, which is disappointingly similar to the original. There's some impressive printing on the hardcase, a full colour flower pattern on all three edges, and two different full artwork endpapers. There's a lot of work gone into this edition, but I just don't like it, and as I won't be reading the book, I'm going to sell it on.
The first item is a lunch bag. It's based on "The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels". It's not a very nice material, the pattern is (as I've said) prissy, and the colour is unpleasantly pastel. And that's coming from someone who loves pastel.
The next item is a ceramic flower pot. The is inspired by the "Emily Wilde" books. It's a good quality item, but again, not to my taste. It's overwhelmingly pink, and frilly. It's an odd shape, and quite small, so is probably suited more to herbs than anything else.
Next is a brooch, based on the featured book. It's a portrait of one of the characters. I don't really know what else to say about this, except that it's not nice. I'd never wear this.
Finally, there's an apron. It's a half apron, inspired by "Half a Soul". I love these books, but wouldn't have linked this design to the story. It's not a very good quality apron, the design is unimpressive, and the colour is unpleasant.
This month's tarot cards feature Niamh and Kit, from "A Fragile Enchantment".
I can't even really judge this box objectively, because it's so, so far from my personal taste. I really disliked the whole box, and I think it is the absolute extreme of a trend I hate - the gendered targeting of subscription boxes.
