Wow, first off, I can't believe I abandoned you all. And second, I am so excited to try and get back into blogging! I just wanted a space again to rant and rave about my thoughts on books, but not necessarily in my book journal, but then I remembered here, and how this tumblr account used to be my online book journal. Anyway, back to todays scheduled program xo
The City of Stardust by Georgia Summers..
It gets a 2⭐️ from me.
This book was so weird for me. I got this edition from Fairy Loot back in their January Adult box, and I got my partner to choose a book for me to read, he landed on this. I was so excited to read it because its giving Velaris vibes, it's giving fantastical feelings..
It gave me.. nothing.
Firstly, the writing style: I loved! It was honestly the only reason I carried on reading, it was so beautifully written and compelling. It's just a shame that the plot wasn't all put together and the characters were only half explored, to me anyway.
Storywise: The plot was interesting. A secret world, that only people called Scholars can access with keys made of this special metal; God-metal/reveurite. Violet Every, our MC, is hidden away from this world, by her 2 uncles, for her safety, because the family is cursed.
Violet's mother was next to be taken away, but she leaves her daughter, Violet, in the hands of her brothers to go off to look for a cure to this curse.
It's honestly a hot mess. So many plotholes, like.. why couldn't one of the brothers be taken? Why must it now be Violet who is to be taken? The author talks alot about Violet's talent in manipulating reveurite but we never see it until the very end for 1 quick second.
Aleksander, my goodness. I wanted to whack that lad so many times. The author wrote him very well, had me compelled with him, and then was thrust back to reality of him and made me want to square go him.
Penelope being the "Bad guy".. there was so much more Georgia could of done with this character.
You're probably reading this like, "Louise, babe, this isn't making a lick of sense.. what are you talking about?" and you know what? You're right.. because to me, this book made no sense.
If you've read this, please let me know how you felt about this!

a fairy lives in this staff, don't disturb her in her little house
the fae king staff isn't only pretty, it comes with free lore bending :3. eos goes into the staff when eclaire isn't scholar-ing. this fairy is her friend, she wouldn't just unsummon her like a tool. additionally eos also helps keeping her corrupted aether stable.

Oh god I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s reading Hurricane wars💀I will say I went into that book not realizing it was stars wars fanfic and then about four pages in I was like ‘is this star wars’ and sure as shit it is and I cannot stand it (me, a certified Star Wars hater™️) (sorry to disappoint)
Okay so look I was NEVER a reylo girlie. I never will be. But I was a star wars girlie in 2015 and like, that was THE fanfic so obviously I read it. And I liked it a lot, the writing was good, the plot was fun, like one of the tags was like, a soap opera with lightsabers or something to that effect.
So I bought this book with my own money expecting to also really enjoy it. I will say that the author can fucking write but sometimes her prose is...a lot. And she reuses the same descriptors over and over (I've been marking one about pine needles).
So far, it hits the same beats as the fanfic but it is also not doing a good job making them enemies OR making FMC two dimensional? I can't follow her thought process at all, and the things I liked and that worked in the fanfic (finding out shes a random princess by her dad seeing her and going, yeah thats her) do not work in the book for me.
I have forgotten their names but MMC also is like, "I hate her which is why I keep saving her life" like COME ON. On page like, 34 I left a note that was complaining one of them already likes the other.

DM: Your reward from Maria's quest ends up being 4 astral diamonds apiece.
Adam (playing Billie): Sweet, I can have some swag again.
Rach (playing Ashiok): Are there trading cards of famous adventurers?
Marijn (playing Godric): No, but we have figurines of ourselves. Mine's life-sized because I'm a fairy.
Hamish (playing Thaddeus): I really want trading cards now though.
DM: *sternly* No.
Tati (playing Seraph): Aw.
Hamish: Why??
DM: *sighs* Fine, they exist, but if they threaten to take over the game I'm retconning it. Don't make me regret this.

Hi Mr. Gaiman!
I just saw the post about the worst bookshop ever, and thought you'd like a story about a bookshop that never opened!
So I used to live in a small coal town that had a wave pool and a book store on the same street. Both facilities ended up being weird as hell for wildly different reasons, probably due to the fact that you shouldn't keep books too close to water. I wont get into the wave pool drama, but I will tell you about the only time the bookstore was ever open.
A friend and I had walked to the convenience store for a snack, and on the way back she noticed a light on in the store so we excitedly scampered over to find a work crew milling around the front doors. Apparently the shop had a new owner, which was exciting, but it was going to be a tackle shop so all books Had to Go.
They invited us to take a look around and make off with as many books as we could carry, which we found out gleefully, was a lot. The shop itself was ...odd. Books of all stripes and colors stacked with no regard for organization, double and triple shelved in ancient sagging bookcases, dust so thick that we left footprints and fingerprints in our wake. Cobwebs swagged the ceiling and made delicate arches between stacks of books that were so tall the touched the ceiling. We looked around, and then looked at each other.
"This is a fairy ring," we decided. Definitely time to go and not piss off the ghosts and spiders that had been there for 20 years. The work crew could deal with that. So we gingerly snatched books from piles and shelves, thanked the guys, and scampered home with our loot.
The next day the bookshop was closed again, the men were gone, and it never reopened in the time that I lived there. I still have a couple books left from the loot pile, so I have proof that the memories are in fact truth, and not fiction.
Later I learned that the store was a mob front, which is still less exciting (and dangerous) than a fairy ring.
And then again, mob fronts and fairy rings are not entirely exclusive.

ofmd headcannons bc i physically can’t stop thinking about these bitches
izzy sings at lucius and pete’s ceremony probably fly me to the moon or killing me softly (written by laszlo cravensworth & later plagiarized)
at the party that follows they all gather up singing shanties, ed & izzy whispering the lyrics to stede, who is still getting the hang of pirate music
stede & ed are supporting izzy’s back, that is still healing, despite his protests
they are also holding hands (ed-stede, stede-izzy)
jim, archie, olu & zheng are sitting suspiciously close
auntie & jackie instantly become besties
wee john, frenchie, roach & the swede are playing some intricate card game but wee john keeps losing deliberately to go back to his knitting
he’s making sweaters for all of them because Winter Is Coming & none of them have warm clothes
when a seagull lands on deck & refuses to stop pinching ed everyone knows who it is
he stays with them for about a week at a time & always comes back
they made a little nest in the sleeping quarters for him right next to roach & the swede
ed has permanently moved into stede’s room & they’ve made a new bed to fit three people for the nights iz wants some company
they also have room with the rest of the crew for the nights when they prefer to sleep alone.
ed & fang go fishing almost everyday & after a couple weeks they don’t need to speak & just sit in comfortable silence
stede keeps training with iz, taking turns fighting zheng & jim
when ed returns one day with fang & sees stede beating all three of them he wants to fight him more than ever. their duel goes on for a long time, the bets placed by the crew reaching extreme heights. in the end stede knocks him down & disarms him. everyone, especially pete, lose their fucking minds
at night stede still reads them stories, sometimes new from recent books he’s gotten, but usually the now familiar fairy tales calm them down the most
sometimes stede, ed, iz, jim, archie, olu, zheng, lucius & pete go on date nights where they try different food, listen to music, sharing sweets
frenchie, wee john, fang & roach can often be seen sticking together, not really seeking any romantic or sexual relationship, but simply wanting companionship
when izzy’s unicorn hoof finally gives out he is absolutely heartbroken so of course the entire crew go out to find him the most durable materials to make him another one
they give it to him the next day & it’s decorated by stede, lucius & surprisingly zheng
wee john has also knitted him a leg warmer for whenever he needs a break from the prosthetic
iz obviously loses his shit when he sees it & totally doesn’t call them twats
then they all proceed to fall on top of him to engulf him in an annoyingly wet hug, ed & stede sneaking two kisses on his cheeks
they often have themed parties to make use of stede’s unending secret wardrobe
wee john, iz & jim rule these parties being the best drag queens & king
after a couple years they dock on a small, peaceful town. everyone immediately loves it there & that’s when stede & ed decide to retire
they use ed’s treasure to buy a large building & the whole crew work together to turn it into an inn
they officially open ‘The Gentle Unicorn Inn’ (ed chose the name)
they also have a little tavern right next to it called ‘Jeff’s’ (they have a lot of fun whenever someone asks ‘who’s jeff?’)
ann & mary regularly pop by & drop off some antiques ann’s looted, for stede to either keep or even sell
every couple of months or so the crew visit for a few days & all of them have designated rooms in the inn
sometimes ed & stede close for a week or so to go on a little trip on the ‘revenge’ with the crew
izzy will go & stay with them more often than the rest of them & even though he doesn’t have his own room he has no problem staying at stede & ed’s
he always sleeps in the middle of their bed

I don't think I've seen a write-up on various fairy-tale and Russian sayings references in the English translation, so I'd like to make one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Puddles make poor drinks" and "Gorkhon water will turn you into livestock": what's up with that?
There is a fairytale about a big sister and the little brother. They walk for a long time and the brother is very thirsty. His big sister keeps telling him to keep going and not to drink from the puddles, like a goat. Eventually the little brother drinks from the puddle.
And promptly turns into a goat.
Rest of the fairytale is about the big sister returning the little brother to his original form.
So, this is where the talks about puddles and water turning you into livestock is about.
Tumblr media
The Akela joke did not work at all in the translation.
It comes from Mowgli, which is well known due to the USSR cartoon. In the book (and in the cartoon) the elderly wolf leader Akela misses during a hunt... after which he promptly is deposed as a leader of the pack. Mowgli loses his protection and this is a Big Deal.
So whenever a boss in real life makes a silly mistake (say, throwing a paperball into the bin and missing) everyone thinks it's very funny to say "Akela missed!" implying that they will get a new boss now and the current one will get deposed for this mistake.
Here "Akela never misses" means that Khan being at risk of infection and coming into the nutshell does not diminish his importance at all and his dogheads are just as loyal as before, happily delivering loot to him.
Tumblr media
There is a saying: "Better a sparrow in hand, than a stork in the sky."
It means that you should treasure what you have, instead of preferring that which you can't get (so easily).
Lara Ravel references that she can't be happy with the little she has. She wants to help others and for this she needs more.
Tumblr media
"Maybe I could be useful to you" is a classic thing that various animals say to people in fairytales, once they are caught and plead for their lives.
I think, this is a popular trope in English fairytales as well, but the phrasing here is lifted directly from fairytales in Russian, so pointing it out either way.
Tumblr media
"Everyone's shirt is closer to their skin" is a well known Russian saying.
It means that your happiness and comfort is always more important to you than the comfort of other people. Hence: your shirt is closer to your skin, so you care about it more.
Tumblr media
"Silence implies assent" is another popular saying (it even rhymes in Russian).
If someone proposes a course of action and no one speaks out against it or for it, then people usually say "silence is a sign of assent" and consider the matter settled. (Or, more often, people then suddenly say that they disagree and you get a more lively and productive conversation.)
Tumblr media
I can't find another screenshot, but Dankovsky says something similar about "I wore down seven pairs of shoes getting to this town".
It obviously could be taken as a factual statement, but most likely it's a reference to fairytales.
In a lot of fairytales the protagonist will be given on a long journey seven pairs of iron boots. Once all of them break, the hero has reached his destination.
Same here: it's a fairytale way of saying that you had a long and arduous journey (or in Capella's case, ran around the whole town for years).
Tumblr media
"I'll just peek with one eye" is another popular Russian phrase.
"Can I look?"
"No"
"How about if I look with just one eye?"
Obviously, it's nonsense, but it's a typical thing to say if you REALLY want to look at something, so you just say "pleeeease, I will just look only a little".

When you think of enemies from Super Mario Bros. 2, who comes to mind? Personally, one of the first that comes to MY mind are those weird birds that you find as early as World 1. The borderline flightless ones that were colored red, white and black in the original, but weirdly got some purple coloring in the All-Stars remake — the ones who weirdly barely appeared again. You know,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Pidgit
Debut: Super Mario Bros. 2/ Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic
Did I actually trick anyone into thinking today’s enemy would be sweet old Tweeter? I don’t know if Tweeter is well-known enough to get that kind of anticipation!
Regardless, Pidgit’s a weird enemy, to be certain! Of course, one could say almost all Super Mario Bros. 2 enemies are weird, but “flightless crow riding on a carpet” is a bit more weird than enemies like “walking bomb”, “walking cactus”, and “bird that drops walking bomb”.
And that’s right: despite its name, Pidgit is a crow, which is not a pigeon at all! It is actually more wrong to name Pidgit after a pigeon than it is to name a gorilla enemy with some sort of hare-related pun in mind. And that’s science!
However, even its original Japanese name is just a portmanteau of “dodo” and “Rodrigues solitaire”, both of which are pigeons…this is Pidgit’s Trick.
This guy’s an oddball, one that didn’t debut in a Mario game and has had very few reappearances since, but has left an inescapable impact since. Before that, though, let’s cherish the reappearances it HAS had!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pidgit’s first reappearance is a weird one—instead of riding a magic carpet, it finds itself being blasted out of Turtle Cannons in Fall as the Pidgit Bill! Super Mario World sure seems pretty fond of Super Mario Bros. 2, and this might be one of its most blatant callbacks. Funnily enough, in the SNES version only horizontally-moving Bullet Bills get replaced, which seems fine until you realize Super Mario World also introduces vertically- and diagonally-inclined Bullet Bills. Woopsie!
Pidgit Bills appear in the ending of Super Princess Peach, too, congratulating the player! That’s cute.
Tumblr media
Pidgit’s next appearance would be another weird one. Wario’s Woods has it be one of Wario’s goons, replacing the fairy when Wario appears on the upper right screen to drop only bombs. Remember when Wario was a villain who could have minions? Yeah. Pidgit can fly here without a carpet at all, no foolin’! Is this part of the spell Wario put over his Woods? Is this why Pidgits fight for him? I don’t know! I think they just forgot.
Tumblr media
They wouldn’t reappear until Partners in Time, and wow! This might actually be their only in-game reappearance where they actually ride their carpets! Which reminds me, do Pidgits make their own carpets, or do they get them from somewhere, or…?
I’ve never had nor played this game so I don’t know exactly how they act, but what I do know is that in the American version, they’re stronger and more likely to drop loot than any other version! That’s fun.
Do you remember 12 paragraphs ago, when you still had your youth and I said we’d get back to how Pidgit left an inescapable impact on the franchise? Well, that time is now, and that inescapable impact is the Lakitu!
Tumblr media
“But Weirdma Rio Enemies dot Tumblr dot Com!,” you cry. “Lakitu debuted in Super Mario Bros., before Doki Doki Panic and thus long before Super Mario Bros. 2 was even conceived!” And on that, you’re right. But let’s look at an attribute unique to Pidgit!
You see, Pidgit rides a magic carpet, yes, but when it’s picked up, the player can ride the carpet themselves temporarily — after a certain amount of time, though, the carpet starts flashing before disappearing completely. Sound familiar?
Tumblr media
Sounds a lot like Lakitu’s Cloud, if you ask me! While Lakitus have been riding their fair-weather friends since 1985, we weren’t privy to that same experience till long after Super Mario Bros. 2, in a little game called…Super Mario World! In a game which already has Pidgit, is it truly at all absurd to say it would have just one more reference to it?
So remember, in every game where you can ride a truculent terrapin’s silly cirrus, be sure to thank your local Pidgit!
…man, too bad we couldn’t segue into at least something about Tweeter, huh? First they were bought out by a rich muskrat, now this. Is there anything Tweeterheads get to look forward to?
Tumblr media
the answer is ME!!!!!!
Hi!! I’m Mod Tweeter, and today’s post was written by none other than moi! It’s a real tweat and an honour to join the cast of Oddball Red-Cloaked-Daisy Critters, and I hope you will all enjoy my writings about more sillybeasts in the future!
For now, let’s close this post with a smooth songbird’s swingin’ serenade…

this isn’t a spoiler !!! i’ve been predicting this since holly announced it on the fairy loot livestream last year for the stolen heir, and i’ve made posts about this. (that jude will have a huge political problem by the end of the prisoners throne and that we will know what Holly’s next project will be)
but a reader who has finished the prisoners throne has confirmed that there will definitely be more jurdan in hollys next faerie project.
Tumblr media
whether jude or cardan are the main POV’s?
i don’t know. since it could be any character that could be the main POV, i will be happy with anything, since either way we will definitely be getting more jurdan (but i’m still hoping it’s a cardan POV, LIKE IMAGINE)
