WOW, Facebook Censorship
I just "liked" a post a friend made in support of Zooey Zephyr (transgender lawmaker, Montana) and got timed out of Facebook for an hour for violating community standards.
And, I would/will do it again.

Meta has engaged in a “systemic and global” censorship of pro-Palestinian content since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza war on 7 October, according to a new report from Human Rights Watch (HRW). In a scathing 51-page report, the organization documented and reviewed more than a thousand reported instances of Meta removing content and suspending or permanently banning accounts on Facebook and Instagram. The company exhibited “six key patterns of undue censorship” of content in support of Palestine and Palestinians, including the taking down of posts, stories and comments; disabling accounts; restricting users’ ability to interact with others’ posts; and “shadow banning”, where the visibility and reach of a person’s material is significantly reduced, according to HRW. Examples it cites include content originating from more than 60 countries, mostly in English, and all in “peaceful support of Palestine, expressed in diverse ways”. Even HRW’s own posts seeking examples of online censorship were flagged as spam, the report said. “Censorship of content related to Palestine on Instagram and Facebook is systemic and global [and] Meta’s inconsistent enforcement of its own policies led to the erroneous removal of content about Palestine,” the group said in the report, citing “erroneous implementation, overreliance on automated tools to moderate content, and undue government influence over content removals” as the roots of the problem.
[...]
Users of Meta’s products have documented what they say is technological bias in favor of pro-Israel content and against pro-Palestinian posts. Instagram’s translation software replaced “Palestinian” followed by the Arabic phrase “Praise be to Allah” to “Palestinian terrorists” in English. WhatsApp’s AI, when asked to generate images of Palestinian boys and girls, created cartoon children with guns, whereas its images Israeli children did not include firearms.

Can we stop trying to make the internet a nice pretty clean place? Why can't people just like horror? Why can't people make jokes to their friends? Why can't people just be people? Why is everything about being so fucking happy and perfect for advertisers? Why do we bend to them? In every single aspect of our lives we bend to them except on the internet. It was supposed to be the escape from that. And now we're getting banned from it too.
I'm so tired.
I just wanna be myself.
Why can't that include just a little violence?
For context. I got banned from Facebook for threatening my little cousin for calling me short and got banned.
Hopped over to my other account and found I'm banned indefinitely for sharing a meme of the suicide booth from Futurama.

Hello, hey, hi down here! This tiktok ban concerns you too because it’s not a “tiktok ban” congress is pushing, it’s CENSORSHIP! You know? That thing you guys post about here every day?
You don’t think your cute little fics are next or anything deemed “inappropriate?” Think again. They will have the right to control your access anytime for any reason.
“Oh but I’m not American, it’s not my problem.” Plenty of countries are already expressing interest in similar policies! If America gets this, you better believe you’re next and it’ll be an even easier fight! This matters! Banning of any material online will ALWAYS be your problem. Because if it’s tiktok, you think they’re gonna let Discord go? Twitch? Reddit? One by one they’ll remove any competition or threat to Facebook Meta.

The timing was ironic.
The Breach’s production assistant logged into Instagram on Friday to share a graphic asking readers to subscribe to our newsletter and bookmark our homepage in case Meta and Google cut off other pathways to our work.
Instead, she saw an error message. She clicked on our Instagram profile and saw another error message, the one that has been popping up on the accounts of other media outlets. “People in Canada can’t see this content,” it said.
All of The Breach’s posts, including a recent infographic exposing the climate harms of Canada’s 2023 wildfire season and a story summary about Quebec tenants fighting back against bad policy, were gone.
The Breach is an independent news outlet, funded mostly by readers, that operates as a non-profit. We produce investigations, analysis and video content about the crises of racism, inequality, colonialism and climate breakdown. Thousands of new readers discover The Breach on Instagram, Facebook and Google every month, or use those platforms to share our work. [...]

so i can't use the phrase "pinkwashing" on facebook. i tried three times, and could send other replies, including a censored version. so that's..... super cool
update: 1:57 pm : it's letting me now, in conversations unrelated to I/P. so no idea what that was about, very strange, but hopefully this edit goes through so nobody gets misinformed

Facebook Is Censoring / Shadow Banning Material Relating to Both Gaza/Israel and the Ukraine/Russia War. Here I explain what I know of the censorship and how to get around it.
Yesterday and today I performed a series of tests on Facebook and concluded that Facebook is censoring content related to the situation in Israel and Gaza, as well as the war in Ukraine. The censorship is subtle and is being carried out in ways that are hard to detect.
One thing I have detected for sure though is that, when you do a search for certain terms, it is only showing posts from certain curated accounts, and is not allowing a general search for all results, and this is evident because if you limit the search to "your friends", it comes up empty. The right pic above shows a censored search, whereas the left pic shows a non-censored search.
Terms that are being censored include "Palestine", "Gaza", "Israel", "Ukraine", and "Russia". However, it is not censoring all posts containing these words, it is merely preventing non-curated content from showing up in searches for these terms.
Why is this important? For one, it makes it harder to connect with friends who are also talking about these issues. For two, it limits the reach of these posts. I have noticed that when I post about the situations in Ukraine and Russia, or in Israel and Gaza right now, my posts are getting less attention than is typical. I suspect this censorship which is like a form of mild shadowbanning, because it is largely hidden from the user, is a major reason.
If you want to search for content on Facebook, you can evade the censorship by using non-censored search terms. For example, the term "genocide" is not censored, nor are terms like "putin", "netanyahu", "likud" (Netanyahu's party), and currently "west bank". Interestingly, the Arabic for Gaza, "غَزَّة", is not censored either, nor is the Hebrew for Israel, "יִשְׂרָאֵל". I haven't checked exhaustively in other languages but you can search term-by-term, and see if you see any recent posts from your friends for that term; if you do, the term is not being censored in this way. (Although this doesn't guarantee that it is not being censored or shadowbanned in other ways, I just haven't detected it yet.)
