Attending theatrical premieres was a characteristic habit of the aristocracy of the 19th century. The artists of the imperial theaters enjoyed great respect and sometimes even the patronage of the Romanovs. On the occasion of various memorable dates, they traditionally received precious gifts from the monarchs.
While in the theater, the noble public could not only enjoy the performance, but also discuss the latest news and make important contacts. Therefore, visiting theaters, especially imperial ones, was the same social event as a ball or an official reception. Going to the theater, like going out into society, meant observing certain rules of etiquette regarding clothing and accessories. Thus, the lady’s outfit had to be quite restrained, but complemented with jewelry and elegant accessories, such as theater binoculars by Faberge.
These diamond-studded pink enamel theater binoculars can be admired as a tour de force in their own right, especially when held up to the wearer's face during a theater performance. In this work we see the richness of decor in the Rococo style characteristic of the Faberge master Mikhail Perkhin. 1898-1903

Miniature portraits of Grand Duchesses Maria and Anastasia Nikolaevna alongside the hospital where they visited injured soldiers during WWI by artist Vasili Zuev, set in a pink enamel Faberge frame
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The caption alongside translates as: ‘‘In this frame of pink enamel, on a surface guilloched by the sun's rays, there are two miniatures by the artist Vasily Zuev: Grand Duchesses Maria and Anastasia and the [Feodorovsky Hospital] House of Mercy, in which they helped the suffering.”
Zuev painted multiple miniatures of the Imperial Family, often set into Faberge jewellery or items. This miniature of the Grand Duchesses from this piece has sometimes been attributed to being from a Faberge Egg or lost.
A few months ago, after a little searching, I at last found the full piece!

The “Bay Tree” egg. It was presented to the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna by her son, Emperor Nicholas II, on Easter 1911.⠀
The motif of the evergreen laurel, symbolizing immortality and glory, was not chosen by chance - that year marked 30 years since Maria Feodorovna’s accession to the Russian throne.⠀
The crown of the laurel tree is egg-shaped and consists of 325 leaves carved from Sayan jade - a stone that, due to its remarkable plastic properties, was especially loved by Carl Faberge and was used to create many of his company's masterpieces. A golden songbird is placed in the jade crown of the tree, whose mechanism was made so well that it works perfectly to this day.⠀
Empress Maria Feodorovna had a weakness for birds, and Faberge, knowing this, often supplied Easter gifts intended for her with mechanical birds. Via the Faberge Museum
