IT'S DONE! After 16 absolutely INSANE months of production I finally finished my thesis film Whittled Down, a mixed 2D/3D short horror film about a wolf trapped in a cabin with a clock. I'll be posting behind-the-scenes sneak peeks as I get closer to releasing this crazy thing, so stay tuned!
To promote my online exhibition ‘A Low Resolution Resonance’ at thewrong.tv I'm posting some loops of my work from the last 10 years.
This loop is from States (2014). Although I don’t remember a great about making it, I can see many elements from previous works such as Describing a Space and future pieces such as Austerity Cycle, present in it. During this period I would create much of the video material in my Tachyons+ video synth, isolate any textures I found interesting then composite them in After Effects to create a tableu, generally without any traditional narrative arc.
I’m not a story teller, so I find the question of how to temporally construct an animation a challenge. I would often use a kind of entropic framework in which to place the work. That is, over time slowly build up a series of images, allow them to exist and interact for a period, then slowly begin to deconstruct them. I was also fascinated with the idea of constructing a 3D image in 2D space which I think is why I chose to make the image slowly recede.
In its composition the work tries to illustrate the idea of a chain of information or perception filters, something I later took into work such as Figure Study II in an attempt to describe how the mind and external spaces interact.

Humanity ended on the planet Earth and there are nothing but ruins everywhere. El after del Mundo (The World's After) is an animated short film created by Florentina González.
After everything was destroyed, there weren't many living creatures around there. The story starts with a soul seeking a stable wifi connection. His luck isn't in his favor but he's persistent.
Eventually, he meets with another ghost, we begin to realize their relationship and similar sides as well as opposites. While their environment changes the story develops.
The animation and character design are spectacular, the story hooks the viewer to other aspects. In some moments I felt the same vibe with Midnight Gospel, a Netflix-produced animated series. In some ways, the similarity is out there and that also gave me comfort and let me into the story.
El after del Mundo does not need any praise from anyone because the awards they get from festivals show its value.
You can check Florentina González's Instagram and Vimeo profiles for more information. You can also watch the short film from Vimeo with close captions as well.

This dissertation aims to analyze how contemporary animation which has experimental qualities express itself with the tactility. In order to reveal the hidden message from the experimental animation, through the "Haptic Visuality" way of looking, may decode the complex appearance and encode memory in the senses . Furthermore, the use of binocular disparity asked to refocus the embodied existence, it also produce the tactile sense within two slightly differences images during experiencing animation.
To track down the material experiment that is based on the research and discussion from physics to visual physiology, and the further transformation form of looking and space. In addition to the setting of cinematic single-channel, how can contemporary animations rethink those animations that are beyond cinemas, such as installation, multi-projection, interactive performance, projection mapping, or virtual reality? Through the research of the works by the author herself and other relevant artists, this study aims to reflect on the current generation of extended imagery, and explores how animation in an experimental way responds to the new humanities and artistic value when “animation is no longer just animation”. From visual to haptic images, the descriptive basic elements such as texture, frame speed, and mise-en-scene in the image content can be related to the viewer's multi-sense bodily. However, how does the tactility of sound resonate with bodily perception? Also, besides the tactile perception that the image content itself can elicit, how does the external viewing setting affect the senses and experiences in a more substantial way?
In the image development history of visual installation and machinery, this research begins with tactile epistemology and the developmental context of optical devices, further comprehensively explores the interlaced evolution of viewing and haptic images in experimental animations. To see how animation could move the cogitations existing between art and technology by its experimental process of continuous self-transformation.

Rounding up my week promoting ‘A Low Resolution Resonance’. This work is called Figure Studies (2016). After some time ignoring the figure in my work, this was an early experiment in addressing how to illustrate it. Although I often cite the painting Petra Im Rosenhag by David Jones as an initial influence. During the period of making Figure Studies, I was looking at Middle Eastern traditional dress and the sovereign veils and jewellery of Tunisia as a way of disrupting the figurative image.
Some traditional dress I found particularly interesting. Often it allows for a recognisable silhouette of the figure, whilst at the same time highlighting a non corporeal space of sound, gesture and ideally, thought, which exists around the form. The space around the body and our interaction with it, is central to my current interest in working figuratively.
