Arthur Pendragon had never frozen in battle. He’d never hesitated when confronted with a fight, be it a challenging knight, a bandit or a sorcerer, he’d always prided himself on his ability to act under any circumstances, not to hesitate when the moment called for it.
He was frozen now.
His hand on his sword, mouth open as he’d been about to shout for his manservant, his entire body stilled as he completely failed to react to what was happening before him.
Hed seen the fog of the spell coming, had been desperately fighting with his knights to clear as many people from the citadel as they could before they succumbed. He’d known, even as he’d been running and calling orders over the panic and chaos, that he would soon lose his city, his people, to a spell he had no way of stopping, to a sorcerer he couldn’t identify.
He’d known he would continue to fight and that unless, by some miracle, they found the sorcerer, that he too would fall beneath the curse and that there was nothing he could do to fight against the sweeping fog.
There wasn’t anything he could do.
But Merlin -
He’d never seen his manservant look so -
There had been such sorrow in his eyes and then he’d -
But Merlin wasn’t -
He didn’t -
Arthur had never heard Merlin’s voice sound so deep and commanding. He’d never once seen his manservant throw a hand toward the sky and command lightning. He’d never seen the man he trusted betray him so deeply and he froze, unable to move or act as Merlin - stupid, bumbling Merlin - commanded the very sky and nature itself to do his bidding.
A sorcerer. The man he trusted beyond all other.
Merlin was a sorcerer.
And frozen, though he was, furious as he was, still unable to move, he could say nothing. Do nothing.
Arthur Pendragon had never frozen in battle. He’d never hesitated when confronted with a fight, be it a challenging knight, a bandit or a sorcerer, but he froze then, in the face of the greatest betrayal he’d ever known.
Froze even as Merlin wielded magic to save Camelot.

A man, supine and utterly still, in what might have seemed like a deep sleep, draws in a long slow breath and opens his eyes. He smiles up at the sky, for he knows not much at all, but he knows this: Hob Gadling is a man of good fortune.
A story about refusing to leave. A story about a quest that spans lifetimes. A story about losing someone, and bringing them back with love.

Want to share an excerpt from one of my wips for no reason Pt 3:
"I thought of you as a friend. Trusted you more than I have anyone else in my life!"  His vision blurred with tears and Arthur hurried to rub his eyes to get rid of them.  "It is only those years that are holding me back from killing you right this instant. I'm risking everything, everything my father built, everything my kingdom stands on, all the laws, all the people, just for you."  He swiped at his eyes again.  "So take it. Take the chance and go. Leave. Stay in Ealdor, I won't send anyone after you. Don't come back."  Merlin was shaking now, his eyes shining before they released more tears.  "I can't," he said again. His voice was quiet, but fearful determination was infused in every word. "I can't leave you."

Daily excerpt from today's writing, chapter 10 of Underline the Gold:
'No,' Anton said. 'I want to comfort you. But I also want to be clear that it's unfair of you to make it seem like my feelings are less because I've been with other omegas. I know you can't hhelp the jealousy, I know that, but you weaponise it to make it feel like what I'm giving to you now isn't real or meaningful. Did Vadim cheat on you?'  'Don't ask me that,' Flitmouse said. 'You can guess. Haven't I already said it before?' 'Did he?' The alpha persuasion was strong. Flitmouse sucked in a huge, awful breath. 'Yes.'  'I'm so sorry, Alois. I don't know how anyone could do that to you. Do you feel like me having partners in the past is the same?' 'Don't make me answer that. I know it's not.' 'I know, baby, you're really smart. But knowing something isn't like that, doesn't mean you don't feel the same way.'  Flitmouse didn't know he was going to cry about this. Didn't know this was something even worth crying about. His shoulders heaved in a weak sob, and Anton brought him closer, his knees drawing up protectively.  'Did he do it a lot?' Anton asked softly.  Flitmouse shrugged. 'I don't know what a lot means.' 'Okay. Um. Let me think. Well, if you ask me, once is too much. But let's say... did he start doing that early in the relationship? And with more than one person?'  Flitmouse wiped angrily at his face and nodded.  'Yeah?' Anton said, his voice sweet and soft. 'What a complete asshole. Hate that guy. That must've been really hard on you.'  'He started before he claimed me,' Flitmouse said brokenly. 'It was one of the things we fought about so badly at the beginning. And he... He... There was this time, oh, it's so stupid, Anton. But I found out he'd been cheating - this silly baby-faced omega who would have done anything for him - and I was going to leave him. I was packing my bags to leave him. So he claimed me. He bit me that day. Told me I couldn't leave. I had to- I had to learn my place. Had to learn an omega's place, you- you understand? I had to be made to learn. And he'd been so nice to me. He'd been so nice to me, for such a long time. It was the only thing for such a long time that I thought he did wrong, that he cheated, the only thing. I would have put up with it, I think I could have- Perhaps I could have, if he'd just apologised.' Flitmouse couldn't stop the crying now, his breaths coming in shaky jags, body shaking as he remembered one of the worst periods of his life that left him feeling dumb and dazed for two years after. Everything reforming around the claim on the back of his neck, and losing so many of his clients, because he vanished from social media for a few months.  'He'd been so nice,' Flitmouse sobbed. 'He had such a gentle smile, just for me. And he was so sweet, and he could be so...so tender. But you've met me, haven't you? I'm all- I'm all hard edges, and I make everyone else like that too.' 'Baby,' Anton said softly, sounding tortured.

Merlin could see the horror in Arthur’s eyes as he shouted for his men to fall back, for the citizens of the lower town to run. Camelot was falling. Victim to a curse they had no way to stop. Uther had already fallen, most of the citadel lay sleeping where they’d stood, the curse flowing out from the heart of the citadel in the form of a fast moving fog that took down anyone in it’s path.
Merlin didn’t know how to break the curse, didn’t know who had even performed the magic but he thought perhaps he could slow it down, prevent it from reaching into the Lower Town.
But Arthur stood at his side, shouting orders to his men and his people and if Merlin did this, if Merlin acted now, he would save hundreds of lives, possibly thousands if the curse carried on sweeping across the whole of Camelot’s lands. But Arthur would know. There was no time to run or hide away. Arthur would know.
Arthur would know about his magic and the lies.
Arthur would know.
And Merlin did it anyway.
He turned to Arthur, reached out a hand to his arm to gain his attention and said, “I’m sorry, Arthur.”
“What?”
But Merlin could only smile at him as he took a step back toward the oncoming fog, raised his hands to the sky and shouted words that would out him as a sorcerer while he summoned all the power of earth and sky he had at his fingertips to save the place and the people that Arthur loved so much.
It would be worth it.
