Another year, another rec list with some of the best xuexiao I've read these last 12 months!! >w<
And like last year's rec list, this isn't either exhaustive or limited to fics posted in 2023. It's just the things I have found, which I liked, and want to spread the love about ^-^
Here's, in no particular order, my favourite xuexiao (and occasional songxuexiao) fics. Also, take a look down below for other mxtx or danmei pairings!
You're mine by twilightshards. This is a phenomenal oneshot where Xue Yang does not wait patiently to take revenge on Baixue temple, but rather follows the annoying daoshi out of Jinlintai as soon as he gets off the hook. He catches up with them a couple of nights later, only to find Xiao Xingchen in a... compromised position. While moaning Xue Yang's name.
The tamed by @fieri-sentio-et-excrucior. Last year I recommended the wonderful The Prisoner of Jinlintai fic, and now we got a sequel to that!!! Exciting stuff, very exciting... Xiao Xingchen saves Xue Yang from his botched execution and Song Lan is there raging at what he thinks is a psycho taking full advantage of his friend's kindness. Absolutely loved it!
蛇 - shé by shoujorei. A spectacular oviposition fic with blind snake hybrid Xiao Xingchen and enemy-posing-as-housemate Xue Yang, who really didn't know what he was volunteering for when he offered to "help" daozhang with his next heat. An absolute delight!
good lies go bad by istilfearkanna One of the Yi City what-if's I like so much, showing what would happen if Song Lan is successful in killing Xue Yang and, as per canon, vows not to tell his friend anything. So naturally you have Xiao Xingchen happy about his rekindled friendship, but also deeply worried about his missing friend... breaks my heart every time T-T (thx lionfish13 for the rec!!!)
Down in the black sea by @10holmes. A mermaid AU which has to be the sweetest Xue Yang /Xiao Xingchen tale I've seen in a while, with xxc being a revered merman saving the life of a handsome pirate... without realizing that is the infamous Xue Yang, mermaid hunter and slayer of plenty of his kinsmen!! But of course, they fall in love. It's downright adorable (and deliciously angst-inducing!) Also, the worldbuilding in this one is marvelous!
promises, promises by an anonymous author. Time travel fic!!! This one follows Song Lan trying to right the wrongs of his life in the easiest way possible: that is, to eliminate Xue Yang before he has the chance to hurt anyone else. Except... he gets distracted saving the life of a poor child with a mangled left hand. Still ongoing, and XXC isn't in the picture yet, but the new chapters are highly anticipated and the writing style is so, so, so good.
the non-con opition by the same anonymous author. How do I know? None of your business!! But the awesome writing style continues here, as well as the song lan/xue yang being brought together by fate is just as awesome. It promises to be songxuexiao eventually, for now it's a delightful soulmates/omegaverse with alpha!Song Lan in rut nonconning the hell out of a mysterious omega with a foul mouth.
Sant Xingchen i el drac by @ergbolli45 A little sweet adorable spin of a traditional legend very dear to my heart. It's winter, the Yi City crew are bored around their campfire, and A-Qing wants a story. So, Xue Yang offers to tell a tale from some exotic land on the west about a little princess, a brave knight and a fearsome dragon.
sticking their dick in crazy by Sectionladvivi. I'm not generally one for modern AUs, but this one is such a stupid and shameless pwp that it skyrocketed through my rankings XD SongXueXiao, and oddly enough, the crazy one alluded in the title isn't Xue Yang!! Delicious and filthy. No thoughts, just horn.
Priceless by @fieri-sentio-et-excrucior. Another modern AU!! but how can I resist, when this is Xue Yang breaking and entering happily married songxiao's domicile, who were getting ready for a very sexy night... and end up, Song Lan tied up and forced to watch the criminal fuck Xiao Xingchen senseless (and unaware it's not his husband the one in bed with him!). Evil and sexy, another wonderful fic by such a wonderful author <3
hands, reaching out by @neriine. A retelling of Yi City but with mutation-like special powers, making it especially interesting when it comes to xuexiao's backstory (song lan is also there, in the background) and the night hunts. It's sweet, sweet, Xue Yang as always a murder gremlin who thinks he has it all under control when the first thing that he doesn't know half-way about is his own feelings... Very well-written, and creative in its worldbuilding!
Tumblr media
THIS lovely picture is not from a fic (well, not yet, unless I manage to do something cute with it >w<) but serves as an example of all the wonderful pic manips @wangxianswuji has made, which maybe it's cheating a bit for a fanfic rec post, but. They're just so good. Go check their profile and drool with me ^-^
and speaking of art, I can't not mention @wrathyforest's art done for the fic Now that I see you, particularly one of my favourite moments with Xiao Xingchen defending Xue Yang from an undesirable... this fic was in last year's rec list, and very deservingly so!
Tumblr media
ANd now for the other ships!
Love of my life, don't hurt me by @foreheadkissesforzewu-jun This is a delightful and spectacularly cruel tale of unrequired love by a gallant cultivator spiriting his soulmate away. At least, that's what Wen Zhuliu sees it, when in fact this fic is him kidnapping and brutally assaulting Lan Xichen, while following the events of the Wen war and the sunshot campaign. Loved it, but PLEASE read the tags.
Jade pillar, bending like reed by awkwardrecline. dark jades (and dark!Lan Xichen in particular) are so so sooo very dear to my heart... this fic has it all, a tyrannical Lan clan leader who will abuse his power left right and center, a jealous didi who wants nothing but possessive love, so much smut everywhere... Cloud Recesses is never as sexy as when the jades are so unrestrained, I love it! ^-^
My future mommy's mistake by tenwudzvrs. Is this fic pretty much what many people consider nono kinks? mpreg, noncon, xue yang being an utter dick? and do I love it precisely because of it? XD pregnant Wei Wuxian goes home one evening but comes across a ruffian in a back alley, who does everything to him up to and including speaking with his husband through the phone while nailing him to the wall. Lan Zhan isn't happy. I am delighted.
What brother needs, brother gets by @foreheadkissesforzewu-jun. a modern AU jadecest pwp which... to be honest, it's pure oral fixation Lan Xichen going to his didi after he got dumped by some idiot and Lan Wangji doing the best he can to comfort him. It's ridiculously shameless and incredibly enjoyable, just to see these two come to the conclusion that the best course of action is to fuck each other!! XD Wei Ying will find a surprise when he gets back home from his travels and finds his husband has collected another husband...
furious love by @alipeeps. From Till the end of the moon, a very nasty and wonderfully in-canon insight on the disastrous marriage between Ye Xiwu (the original) and Tantai Jin. Let's just say she decides to take her marital rights to the extreme, and using the very same lust potion that originally landed her in that marriage to begin with! Tantai Jin is one of those characters that truly suffer beautifully, and suffer he does here!
a fire, made high and wild by @judiwench. A fic for Sleuth of Ming Dynasty, which is a series that wormed its way into my soul. Sui Zhou desperately searches Tang Fan (him, please, him, not his corpse) only to find him... less than good. I was seriously debating between this one and is the festering that kills a man by the same author, but... Agh, they are both amazing snippets at their obvious mutual love, and the trauma that brings it to light. Highly recommend the series and these fics!
a long sleepless night by @dying-redshirt-noises. This one is from Mysterious Lotus Casebook, a wonderful three-way pwp in the Girls' Mansion where Fang Duobing gets doused with sex pollen... of course, Li Lianhua wants to help, but there is not much he can do with his yang disfunction. How handy to have someone like a-Fei nearby to rail the young master, then!! It is sexy and wonderfully in-canon, and I'm all for it.
And I'm probably still forgetting a few fics, there is nowhere near enough jadecest here compared to what I know I have read and enjoyed... Shame on me again for forgetting to bookmark more often than not.
I'm a bit sad that I barely found any of this year's authors on tumblr (don't know if they don't have accounts here, or do under different usernames) so if anyone knows about them, repost bc I'd like to engage and give them my most sincere praise.
Also, I will say I purposefully avoided tgcf fics for fear of spoilers until I read the whole book, so... next year I'm surely filling this with hualian and such!! >w<
Finally, since we're at it, I just will get a bit of self-promotion with the 5 fics I liked most of what I wrote on this year. I'm IMMENSELY PROUD to have produced 36 fics in this year of our lord 2023 (3 per month!!! omfg!!) and while I can't claim favourites, these might be the ones I'm most proud of:
Some kind of dream. Xuexiao roleplaying after a night hunt, with some nice power dynamics, very mutually enthusiastic consensual non-con, and Xue Yang all but confessing that he is Xiao Xingchen's worse enemy... Smut and fluff, all in one. I do love the 3 year bliss in Yi City, and all the in-canon opportunities it offers!!!
Incensed nights. An INSANE endeavor for kinktober, with WangXian dreaming each night a different cozy, cruel, smutty or simply crack-y scenario. 31 fics for the price of one!! multiple pairings, I can't stress how much Lan Zhan dreams of his brother, or wei wuxian's mind follows other ships... Extremely happy with this one, and I nearly went crazy, seriously.
Shards of morning nights and forbidden kisses. My attempt at jadecest, niecest and omegaverse, all in one. ANd quite successful, might I say! Both clan leaders Lan and Nie want to find a way to claim and marry their respective omega didis, but something something clan rules forces them to play a delicate and sexy political game. It ends in a very nice orgy XD
A Comedy of Yi City Errors. This one, I'm particularly happy with the sheer amount of planning and interlocking plotpoints it has, with Song Lan coming across Xiao Xingchen, a-Qing and Xue Yang without even realizing. I'm told it is quite funny... And I like it very much >w<
...what did you call it again? the only one not mdzs in the list, this is for Till the end of the moon and it's yet again Tantai Jin suffering in his so beautiful way! It was done for an exchange, following the premise: take a canon even and make it worse. Do you think ttj had it bad in the series, with the servants mistreating him in Ye Manor? Ya have seen nuffin!!!
Once again, thanks for reading, thanks to all authors for writing, and let's have a wonderful 2024 full of fics and love!!!

In the mood for...
~*~
1. Hi! I'm wondering if there's a fic like this?
(cql) fight where lwj lunges with his sword, and wwx doesn’t move, not thinking lwj would actually hurt, but lwj accidentally hurts him? @karinasnowwwx
Regrets by antebunny (G, 38k, wangxian, miscommunication, misundersandings, time travel fix-it, temporary character death, angst w/ happy ending, fluff, hurt/comfort)
Give Me What I Want by Jo Lasalle (Jo_Lasalle) (E, 60k, WangXian, Bad Guys Made Them Do It, Canon Divergence, Episode Related, Angst with a Happy Ending, Burial Mounds, fuck or die aftermath, Angst) the third fic in the series "Give what you like" has a scene like this
~*~
2. hi!! i'd like to request fics that are similar to rather cruelly used and rather reserved by x_los.
i saw someone mention that they'd like specifics for these types of asks; i don't have something in particular in mind (i'd love to get any recs at all!), but some examples could be: this type of back-and-forth conversational humor; the sort of poetic way the prose is written; wwx grieving a-yuan before finding out he's alive; and/or how the confession/relationship is portrayed.
i especially liked the lines where wwx asks if lwj knew wwx loved him and lwj responds "sometimes, i knew," so fics where lwj or wwx sort of. suspect each other likes them/they sort of fall together naturally are also super welcome!
i know this is a lot but i tried to be as helpful as possible. no rec has to accomplish all of these, i just really liked that fic lol @kisskissgotohell
and having a marvelous time by varnes (E, 108k, WangXian, Yúnmèng Siblings, Sound of Music AU, (i know!!! i know. stay with me on this.), Slow Burn, Mutual Pining, Family Feels, spies to lovers???, Protective Siblings, Sometimes You Just Want Your Dads To Admit They’re Your Dads, Angst with a Happy Ending)
threadfic by saltyfeathers (Not rated, 49k, wangxian, chapters tagged individually)
Works by Vamillepudding

3. so I've seen a lot of fics with variations of 'Xiao xingchen and song Lan join and/or ally with (while still being rogues) the YilingWei sect'. But what about fics where wwx ends up joining the sect Xiao xingchen and song Lan had planned to found? (And not in a 'wwx raised by another sect' type way, but like a diverging au).
~*~
4. ITMF canonverse fics where Wangxian have to deal with prejudice over their relationship. Hey, I love a good everyone-is-super-supportive-except-for-YZY fic because they deserve it. But MZY's treatment alone makes it clear that homosexuality is looked down on & the lack of any pushback can get boring. I don't want anything that stops them getting together, but I want to read something where they have to deal with negative reactions, whether it's sneers & gossip or having to leave their sects @thispatternismine
Just As Much by Gemiblu (E, 23k, WangXian, Jealousy, Boys In Love, Homophobia, demonic cultivation bondage, Power Bottom WWX, Cockblocking, Semi-Public Sex, Crying During Sex, Intimacy, New World, Female Characters, Casual Intimacy, mentions of non-canon character death, description of violent acts, post marriage, Explicit Sexual Content, Kissing, Affection, supportive married couple, Pet Names, YLLZ WWX)
~*~
5. can i request some xiyao fics? i recently got into that ship and i'd like to read some of yalls favorites :) preferably no lxc/jgy/nmj unless there's a focus on lxc/jgy, and no abo/mpreg/porn without plot please!
Meng Yao vs. the Board of the Homeowner's Association Series by Ariaste (M/T, 119k, WIP, XiYao, WangXian, Modern AU, Established Relationship, xiyao and wangxian are both already married, Family Feels, Domestic Fluff, Family Bonding, Slice of Life, Discussions of Past Trauma, wwx's canonical kinks, HOAverse) there's a reason it's recced all the time!
save the bees (ride a beekeeper) by Ariaste (T, 4k, LXC/JGY, modern, Fluff and Humor, Meet-Cute, Bees, Flirting)
ask until your heart gets it right by Stratisphyre (G, 6k, JYL/JZX, JZX & JGY, implied LXC/JGY, Canon Divergence, Fluff and Humor, Unreliable Narrator JZX, warning for JGS behaving exactly as expected, Meng Shi's canonically shitty situation, Minor surprise pairing at the end, Fix-It, Everyone Lives au)

Aftermath by KouriArashi (T, 57k, JYL/JZX, wangxian, LXC/JGY, JZX & JGY, JYL & WXX, Canon Divergence, Fix-It, Everybody Lives, Romance, Developing Relationship, Family, Sibling Bonding, Light Angst, Politics, Attempted Sexual Assault, some murder on occasion, People talking about their feelings, processing their trauma, The good shit)
Whispers in My Ears by tabulaxrasa (T, 3k, wangxian, implied LXC/JGY, Canon Divergence, LWJ stays at the Burial Mounds, Gossip, JGS is the worst, they have a son, Everyone lives, Podfic Available)
~*~
6. Hey, thanks for your work as always! For the next in the mood for I'd love a compilation of high energy fics, just writing that is high spirited and fun or high energy and super engaging.
live from new york by varnes (E, 87k, WangXian, XuanLi, Modern AU, SNL AU, Slow Burn, Friends to Lovers, Pining, Getting Together, Happy Ending, Idiots in Love, and they were ROOMMATES, Frottage, Light Bondage, could not be lighter or gentler bondage)
The Scarlet Lotus by rainbowninja167 (M, 137k, WangXian, Marriage of Convenience, Secret Identity, Fix-It, Angst with a Happy Ending, It Gets Worse Before It Gets Better, Canon-Typical Violence, canon-typical war crimes, Yunmeng Bros, Slow Burn, Mutual Pining, Miscommunication)

Meng Yao vs. the Board of the Homeowner's Association Series by Ariaste (M/T, 119k, WIP, XiYao, WangXian, Modern AU, Established Relationship, xiyao and wangxian are both already married, Family Feels, Domestic Fluff, Family Bonding, Slice of Life, Discussions of Past Trauma, wwx's canonical kinks, HOAverse) (link in #5)
ID Bro Saga Series by Bowandtie (T, 39k, WangXian, Modern AU, dating app, Liberal use of emoji, 3zuns as bad friends forever, Slow Burn, super slow it's practically sous vide, Crack) Please read first!: Hey mods I suggested a fic (ID bro series) for no 6 for recent IMTF , I read this series a long time ago and was revisiting it and I found it had some (not much ) humor that is insensitive (like chapter 3 has a joke about Auschwitz). The author is clearly not a native english speaker and might be unaware, though they didn’t correct it though a comment kindly suggested it. I wanted to apologise, I must have overlooked. I don’t want to promote anything that is insensitive or might hurt anyone.
10 RMB lucky chickens by Raitelzen (T, 25k, XiCheng, WangXian, Modern AU, College/University, Neighbors, Chickens, mafia, Motorbike, Pathology Students, Angst, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Mental Health Issues, Pre-Relationship) Last one is crack fic
ridiculous future bullshit Series by sami (T, 61k, WangXian, XiChengQing, Future Fic, in theory it follows on from an au, specifically The Same Moon Shines Series, in actuality I'm not committing to this that hard, Humour, immortals through history, Modern AU, Sort Of, University, outsider pov, Pride, Chaos Gremlin WWX)
~*~
7. Hi! Looking for a fics where LWJ died, but WWX hasn't. Doesn't matter what caused his death - punishment, accident, or protecting someone - anything is okay. I wanna read sth about WWX's feelings about it. LWJ'S resurrection after years would be great too
In the new dawn by ballofstring (E, 9k, XiXian, WangXian, Canon-Typical Violence) warning: it's wwx/lxc pairing.
Moonlight by lunarvelle (E, 14k, WIP, WangXian, A/B/O Dynamics, Omega Verse, Alpha WWX, Omega LWJ, Bottom LWJ/Top WWX, Canon Divergence, YLLZ WWX, WWX Creates a Sect | Yílíng Wèi Sect, LWJ Has a YLLZ Kink, Submissive LWJ, Horror, Case Fic, Pining LWJ, Whump, Dark WWX, WangXian Get a Happy Ending, Age Difference, Angst with a Happy Ending, LWJ Whump)
~*~
8. #itmf a fic similar to "after all i drifted ashore" by lingering_song, as in wwx does exactly what the cultivation world wants: give up the yin hufu and dissappear with his wen army and heretic powers; when the jins become the next wen sect, reign over all the others just as he said, and they come asking for help once again. i sincerely would prefer if wwx isnt forgiving to the ones that hunted him down after he down and betrayed him buy trying to lead a siege against him.
~*~
9. hello!! could you please rec fics with the "secretly virgin wei ying lying about how amazing he is in bed and then getting fucked by lan zhan" trope?? or anything similar to it! i've been craving it so much but idk exactly how to find those through ao3 tags *cries*

Teach Me The Ways by likeafox (E, 58k, WangXian, Canon Divergence, The Porn Is the Plot)

Lead Me On Through by vesna (mrsronweasley) (E, 54k, WangXian, Arranged Marriage, Practice Kissing, practice other things, horny boys in love, questionable logic, Questionable Choices, they're dumb but cute, but dumb, but really cute, slight knives, Happy Ending) I think this one also fits but I can't remember exactly. Has similar wwx you clown vibes though
Wei Laoshi, Poonslayer by FeelsForBreakfast (E, 6k, WangXian, Cloud Recesses Study Arc, POV LWJ, straight boy wwx, Loss of Virginity, Getting Together) op might want to check the sbwy tag, I feel that is where you would find that trope the most cause its Wei ying talking /lying abt being with girls lol

10. Was rereading Beast of Gusu series, and as much as I love Foxxian/Dragonji fics (or any other combination of animals), can I get some more recs where only one half of WX is a shapshifter/non-human/etc? I've also read the tiger fic, the one where LWJ is cursed as a plant, and the one where everyone in the Burial Mounds is cursed as a monster, so you can skip those! Please and thank you!!

It's so sad that there are no fics where Wei Ying got good reputation 😭. I'm changing my itmf, please do one on fics where Wei Wuxian is loved by a collective people, like people of yunmeng or people of yilling. Something like that?
❤️ The Absolutely True Story of the Yiling Patriarch: A Manifesto in Many Parts by aubreyli (T, 20k, wangxian, In-Universe RPF, Romance Novel, Post-Canon Fix-It, primarily drama-canon with cameos from novel-canon, The Absolutely True Story of the Yiling Patriarch: A Manifesto in Many Parts by aubreyli [Podfic] by Rhea314 (Rhea))

what if all the mxtx series happened in the same world? id think the timeline would work like this:
1. tgcf starts. and by starts i mean starts at the beginning in xianle. everything pre 800 year timeskip happens, then in the next 800 years,
2. MDZS happens. a good 300-400 years post-fall of xianle, sects are centered around clans. the MDZS babygirls do their thing and while wangxian are out there living their post-canon domestic bliss life, the ideals of xiao xingchen and song lan catch on - specifically with the ones who lost faith in the system of clan-based sects (ones like mianmian). new sects, ones based on merit and not bloodlines, emerge and overtake the traditional sects in popularity (the traditional sects either merge with the new sects or fade away over the years. except for the jin, somehow they stay there and eventually form the huan hua palace sect, ugh.)
3. 800 years pass and xie lian ascends once more! the events of tgcf take place and hualian live their immortal lives in domestic bliss. but oh no, messing with the heavens does something to create a fracture in the world, revealing a second world of demonic beings that use not resentful or spiritual energy, but demonic energy. the two worlds merge. to combat this, the gods of tgcf patron different sects and pass down some of their teachings. more cultivators are able to reach immortality, which leads to
4. svsss!!

xuexiao self-harm
oooh this is an interesting one.
first off because I don't think either xue yang or xiao xingchen would ever describe themselves as self-harming, and that's true, to an extent. certainly in the most narrow and stereotypical sense of the term.
but I think they both, in different ways, have a little bit of an urge toward self-destruction.
(ended up putting this under a read more because jesus fuck it got long)
I feel like xue yang is the more obvious one here. To quote from an ask I'll link to later: there is "a certain degree of self-destructiveness inherent in the kind of reckless behavior that xue yang exhibits." he's not trying to hurt himself, in fact I think xue yang at least on a conscious level lives a lot of his life with the goal of not being hurt ever again (his methodology for this aim leaves something to be desired) and is very oriented toward his own survival. but.
I think there's also ways in which...well, I mentioned the recklessness > self-destructiveness relationship, which isn't equivalent but is I think a little related, in the way that xue yang is constantly going "but okay what would happen if I [very risky activity]" is...you know. I don't think he actually thinks he's invincible, except in the ways that he is. I think some of it's about almost challenging the rest of the world to fuck him up about it, pushing to see how much he can get away with, and always at the back of his mind the awareness, the certainty, that he's not destined for a long and quiet life. xue yang lives every day with the background expectation that he's going to die young and violently and that's something he just kind of accepts as both inevitable and not that big a deal. he's not going to act to speed it up but he's not exactly trying to avoid it either.
and sort of related but more physical, I've talked some before about xue yang's kind of fucked up relationship with his own body, and how it is sort of his enemy, in some ways, and he has a vaguely antagonistic relationship with it as a thing that can and does fail him sometimes. I think xue yang is prone to pushing himself to the absolute limit and past it - canonically he is at least capable of moving through serious injury without slowing down, which I think says less about how much he might feel pain and more about how he's learned to live with it as a thing that happens and can't get in the way of other stuff.
so damage to his body is...well, I think I described it once that xue yang feels generally about damage to his body like another person might feel about damage to their car. if somebody else does it he's going to be pissed as hell and very angry at them, but it's not so much about the hurt itself as it is about the fact that they damaged something that's his. if he does it to himself...well, that sucks, and he's going to have to deal with the consequences, and he might be angry about it, but it's not like it's something to cry over. so like...if something is really important xue yang is willing to hurt himself pretty badly for it, as long as it's survivable. the fact that it involves hurting himself wouldn't be a feature, but it wouldn't exactly be a bug, either. just an element to be considered when making decisions like any other.
hoo boy. okay, now that I've written an essay about my boy, let's dig into xiao xingchen.
xiao xingchen is...well. he would never hurt himself. he would never directly inflict harm on himself, physically, except for the time he does, but that's different. I think he would just see it as something awful in a particular way that's less about the psychological than it is about the material, if that makes sense.
what he will do is accept harm to himself as acceptable in exchange for someone else.
one of the reasons that xue yang went after song lan, other than pure practicality, is I think the recognition that hurting xiao xingchen is one thing (difficult practically, but also just itself) and hurting someone else so xiao xingchen knows it's because of him is infinitely worse (and also easier, practically). he's the embodiment of the "wounding me emotionally would pay much higher dividends" answer for the "give me one good reason not to punch you in the face" meme.
xiao xingchen after he leaves song lan is, I think, sort of fixated on the idea that he has to somehow atone. giving his eyes to song lan is a start but it can't be an end, it isn't enough, but nothing will ever be enough, and now he has to live with that, alone, and what I'm saying is that there's a distinct possibility that, if he was by himself on a night hunt and something offered to let another person go in exchange for xiao xingchen's death, I think he'd at least hesitate.
I don't think he'd ultimately take the exchange, because there's too many variables at play (the monster could be lying, for instance) even aside from the taboo of suicide. but I think after baixue temple he'd hesitate. before baixue, the exchange of his pain to prevent someone else's is a price xiao xingchen is willing to pay in theory, and after it's a price he's willing to pay in a way that's almost uncomfortably eager. never quite over the line into obvious or clear-cut self harm in the narrowest sense, so that it would always be deniable, to him or anyone else. but that doesn't change what it is, at its base.
if you were wondering: xue yang absolutely recognizes this tendency in xiao xingchen and not as anything worrisome in himself; xiao xingchen absolutely recognizes this tendency in xue yang and worries about it a lot, and does not think he has any related problems whatsoever.
this is all in canonverse, by the way. I think things would be a little different for xue yang in a modern au, say, for reasons i've written a little about before.

Hi! I loved loved loved the haunted house vibes poll and figured out all of them EXCEPT for the "they were happy, here, once" and it's driving me up the wall a little bit. Any chance you could put me out of my misery? 🤣
Ahhh thank you!! I'm glad everyone has liked it, it just sort of possessed me right before bed! 😁
OKAY YES, that one is a little more vague than the rest. Here is the 'answers' to which house was what, as there were some other people that were unsure as well;
The Jingshi with Madam Lan
Lotus Pier with all the massacred Jiang Sect
The coffin house in Yi City with Xiao Xingchen, Xue Yang, and A-Qing
Guanyin Temple with Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue and the statue of Meng Shi (JGY's mom)
The Burial Mounds with the Wen Remnants and specifically Lan Sizhui/A-Yuan
The Hanshi where Lan Xichen is in seclusion, the same place his father was
Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli's residence in Koi Tower
The Nightless City/Nevernight after the Sunshot Campaign/the Clans tried kill Wei Wuxian (CQL!canon)
Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren's house, Wei Wuxian's childhood home in Yiling
The Unclean Realm/The Sabre Hall in Qinghe with all the Nie Clan Leaders

I was telling my mom about Thousand Autumns today and I was like... "okay so imagine Xiao Xingchen... and imagine Xue Yang... except in this book it's canon that they get together" and the look of sheer horror on her face makes me think I've probably failed to sell her on QQ. 🤣🤣🤣 I tried to salvage like "No no the one like Xue Yang is much less murdery they're just both horrible little gremlins in somewhat different ways. And Shen Qiao is a lot like Xiao Xingchen! That's good, right?" Her horror was unabated. Ah well guess I won't be lending her my copies once I have it in English. More rereading time for me.... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

please please please please make a case for the specific kind of dyke xue yang is pleaaaaase <3
!
I am very, very tired, so I don't know how coherent I'm capable of being, but I'll try my best!
One interesting thing about Xue Yang is the way his non-conformity with societal rules works, because he imo utterly does not give a fuck about the society around him and the way he relates to it, outside of the fact that he doesn't fit in. (With some exceptions, of course.) I read him as kind of having an attitude that can be somewhat summarised in three points, which are:
Society expects certain things, and other people play the game of society by either conforming or not conforming to these things. Xue Yang is highly aware of societal expectations and moral ideals how they're in conflict with what people actually do. He sees through the elaborate dance of social norms and interactions, he knows all the steps, he just thinks it's a stupid dance.
He does whatever he wants. He's not bound by societal conventions in any way; he makes his decisions according to what does and doesn't feel good to him personally. (That isn't entirely true because he's still influenced by society, but I'd say it's mostly true.)
He is important; society and other people are not. He knows how he and his actions are seen and judged, but it doesn't matter, so he'll just go ahead doing what he does! (It does matter to him. Deep down, it does. But that's imo restricted to his anger and hurt at being considered worthless or monstrous, and not as related to any specific actions others judge him for.)
So, Xue Yang's style of non-conformity is drastically different from e.g. Song Lan's. Song Lan cares about society. He deliberately places himself in opposition to its norms, because he sees them as harmful and hopes to change that. Thus, he takes part in that dance, even though the steps he chooses are different. Like, even deliberate subversion of and non-conformity with societal norms in some way reproduce these norms. (Which in itself is a completely neutral thing; subversion and non-conformity are reactions to something and kind of depend on that thing existing in the first place.) Every action is a dialogue with society. And I don't necessarily think that Xue Yang isn't in a dialogue with society, but he goes about it in a different way. He doesn't choose his steps, he just moves, no matter whether he ends up going with the flow or not. He's currently on his way to the buffet table.
(Xiao Xingchen doesn't know the dance. He's stepped on Song Lan's feet thrice already.)
Introductory meta done. Now onto dyke Xue Yang.
To preface that, of course everyone who reclaims the term "dyke" is a dyke, no matter how they present. I'm going with this term partially because it is so vague, partially because it's connected to rebellion and has the same "You think I'm worthless and insult me? Fuck you, I'm going to own everything you despise me for so hard that you'll have no power at all over me" vibe Xue Yang has, and partially because, when used to describe an aesthetic rather than an individual person or a group, it evokes certain images for me that imo fit Xue Yang pretty well. If there's a more precise word for that aesthetic, I don't know it. I'm going to argue in favour of dyke aesthetic Xue Yang, and there are two main points I want to address.
One, Xue Yang's non-conformity is so volatile that I don't think it would fit into a certain category. There's something deliberate about things like being butch or femme, both in terms of these labels having a certain history in a community (I don't think Xue Yang would see herself as part of a queer community, at all) and in terms of the societal dance. It's a specific way of choosing your steps. For Song Lan, that sort of deliberate non-conformity works super well imo because canon Song Lan is so deliberate about the way he doesn't conform! For Xue Yang, I doubt she'd think about things like the way she performs her gender. It doesn't matter. She does what feels good, no matter whether that's inconsistent or fits into any categories. Again, I don't think Xue Yang has the drive to seek out other people who share her experiences or identify with anyone else, which is after all a part of giving the way you do queerness a specific label and arguably a part of openly performing that kind of queerness in the first place.
This isn't particularly uncommon or anything; most lesbians are neither butch nor femme. But on top of that, Xue Yang also doesn't give a shit about conforming or belonging to anything else, so I imagine that the way she looks is... maybe not blatantly, visibly queer? Because that would require her to want to look queer, but also not not visibly queer, because she'd entirely ignore cisheteronormative ideals of How To Dress.
Which brings us to the second point, which is the question of how removed from the dance of society Xue Yang actually is. Bc I think there are some things she would care about. Considering his CQL aesthetics especially, but also in the novel, Xue Yang is edgy! He named his sword Jiangzai! All the not giving a shit about society aside, there is one thing Xue Yang does imo care about performing, and that is the very fact that he doesn't give a shit about society. Which of course stems from the way he was harmed by the prevalent social structure and the hurt he compensates for with his blatant disregard for any kind of morals or propriety. So, like, dyke Xue Yang would still care about looking different, maybe in some way that seems somewhat dangerous and certainly in a way that gives a middle finger to everyone who'd disapprove.
And I genuinely think that might be anything! I can truly see Xue Yang dress in anything from a full biker suit to a 2014 Babymetal stage outfit - the crucial point imo is that she'd always look different, slightly to the left from anything you could give a name to or put your finger on. It would probably be something at least vaguely practical - she needs to be prepared to stab people and wouldn't want to be held back by her clothes of all things - but that's about it. I think that general vibe - neither truly GNC nor truly conforming to anything, neither masculine nor fully feminine nor deliberately androgynous, but always visibly different from the cishet norm - fits the term "dyke" pretty well.
Also, I just think she'd wear knockoff Doc Martens.

1, 2, 12, 16 and 22 for the ask game! No particular fandom, up to you.
the character everyone gets wrong
Gonna say a toss-up between Xiao Xingchen and Xue Yang here.Guess it depends on whether you mean in fic or just in The Discourse in general?
I see so so many bad takes on Xue Yang, especially people utterly glossing over his trauma, and... I'm happy for you guys, I guess, who've apparently never known trauma and what it does to a person? It's not a matter of Xue Yang deciding to be a murderous asshole because he broke a finger once. It's that his entire personality and the way his mind works were brutally shaped by severe abuse and trauma at a very young age. You don't have to like him or at all condone his actions, but have a little compassion, for fuck's sake.
As for Xiao Xingchen... I don't know which rubs me the wrong way the most, the "lol XXC can't do math" crowd claiming he's outright stupid, or the "lol XXC was raised by hippies" who utterly disregard his whole cultural context. Personally not at all a fan of mean (dom) Xiao Xingchen either, I just can't see it work with his canon personality, but to each their own, I guess. I won't read it, though.
2. a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom
Hmmm. That's actually a tough one, because I hc Xue Yang (And Xiao Xingchen for that matter) as rather fluid switches without particular preference as long as things are sexy and feel good.
I guess you could argue that Xue Yang would be wary about who he'd let top him because of his rough and precarious childhood and how badly the world's hurt him, but then, the boy also has a self-destructive high-risk-behaviour streak a mile wide, so.
I guess the closest I can get is that I don't think Song Lan enjoys the idea of bottoming, partly because of his more ingrained ideas of masculinity and femininity and the power roles he feels are inherent in topping/bottoming, but more importantly because he already struggles with physical touch, and the idea of being held down, touched and "trapped" in any way during sex is a bit scary. Not to say he wouldn't come around to it, but it'd take a lot more mulling over - and gentle experimentation. 😏
I already answered 12, so moving on to 16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)
Oh man, is this my cue to mutter about mean dom Xiao Xingchen again? Like, I get the appeal of exploring characters far outside their canon constraints, I really do, and if mean dom Xiao Xingchen tickles your metaphorical pickle, by all means, have fun! I just personal really dislike it. (I am super grateful to all writers out there who have started tagging for it, though! It makes it easier to avoid - and find, for those who are into it. Everyone wins!)
As for pairings, I just don't like SangCheng or XiCheng, they both feel very pair-the-spares to me, and are just... Mm. Not for me. Honestly, funnily enough, SongXiao goes here, too, 95% of the time. I pretty much only like these two as part of SXX - I don't know if it is because of many SongXiao shippers' way of treating Xue Yang like dirt, or just because the two characters on their own don't interest me much, but yeah. On the whole, I won't read fic for just SongXiao unless recommended by people I trust, and I'll only like/reblog art if it's very pretty and doesn't imply dead Xue Yang.
I also really don't like most modern au BDSM fic? So much of it reads like a wholesome manual - and I'm sure for people in that scene, it's really hot! It just doesn't do anything at all for me, except give me secondhand embarrassment. If sex is going to be a bit painful and having undertones of dominance and submission, i want it to be very, very real, borderline dangerous and not done for play or politely negotiated beforehand. Gimme the hot mess or nothing.
(Mandatory disclaimer that these are just my personal squicks and mehs, not passing any judgment on anyone who does like them! My Kink Is Not Your Kink And That's Okay, and ship and let ship. ✌)
I already answered 22, too, but... Hm. I'm sure I can think of more if I try...
22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
I think Xue Yang's and a-Qing's relationship is a lot more complicated than a lot of people seem to want to think! Especially for those who've only watched CQL, where a lot of the Yi City arc was either cut or angled to make it into more of a psychological thriller - but they were a family! All three of them, and in the text there is such clear evidence that they all really cared about each other! Even Xue Yang.
A-Qing stole his candy without fear, asked him "why were you like that when you were little??" when he told the first half of the story of his childhood trauma. When she claimed to have been bullied to the point of crying, he protectively told her how to defend herself and made her apple bunnies to cheer her up. Even after Xiao Xingchen's death (and he must have known by then that she was the one who sold him out) one of the things he did while cleaning the house was to make her bed, waiting for her to come back home.
Not least of all, Wang Haoxuan said in his in-character farewell note that Xue Yang would have protected a-Qing as long as their happy 'dream' in Yi City lasted.
They ended horribly, yes, causing each others' deaths, but there was a time where they cared deeply about each other and looked out for each other, and that still matters.

Okay, so.
Kind of mixing canons here, maybe, but.
In The Untamed, there’s this arresting little moment after Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen hand off Xue Yang to the Nie contingent, and both groups turn and start walking away in opposite directions.
Except for Lan Wangji, who is rooted to the spot watching the two rogue cultivators leave, and Wei Wuxian, who notices, and quietly, sympathetically, watches Lan Wangji for a few moments until he gently calls to him and tells him it’s time to go.
Wei Wuxian recognizes that Lan Wangji is feeling something big in that moment and is trying to be respectful about it. He looks longing, thoughtful. Some people have called this his Ring of Keys moment. We don’t know for sure what he’s thinking, but it’s easy to imagine that he’s picturing a life that is not exactly easy, but simpler and easier to navigate, where his world is stripped down to just a cultivator in white and a cultivator in black traveling together, helping people, stopping evil in its tracks wherever they find it.
And then Wei Wuxian dies, and the dream is dead, except it isn’t really.
Because Lan Wangji spends the next decade and a half or so (give or take a couple years depending on your canon) traveling, helping people, stopping evil in its tracks wherever he finds it. He even creates quite a name for himself as a hero of the people, just as Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen did.
It’s just that he does it alone.

Feeling itchy to write a yi city AU in which Xue Yang gets sloppy and unintentionally starts giving away details -his voice slips back to its original register, he mentions something from his past, xxc squeezes his left hand while they’re busy in bed...
At first he’s all tense and defensive every time that happens, because fuck, his cover is blown, but no reaction comes from Xiao xingchen. every time he’s careless and lets something slip, no reaction. Daozhang isn’t stupid: he ought to have noticed a few, if not one, of those very incriminating pieces of evidence.
So of course xy reaches the conclusion that daozhang is purposefully looking the other way (pffff) and that that he knows who Xue Yang is, but for the sake of their peaceful coexistence, he’s decided to let the past go and start anew. No need to bring the past up, no need to upset the established order, just keep living together as is.
And THREE YEARS go by like this. Xue Yang isn’t even pretending anymore, he just never uses his name out of habit. And then one day they’re walking at the market and he lets out an offhand comment like “This potato seller, he wouldn’t be so smug and pricey if I trashed his stall” and xxc’s all like Don’t trash stalls, it’s not Right™ And Xue Yang says “Why not? That’s how I met you!”
Cue a monumental scene they are doing in the middle of the market, yelling at each other because yes, Xiao Xingchen was that dumb that he had NO IDEA it was him, all like “Xue Yang!! You’ve deceived me!” and xy being so fucking confused like “I though we were on the same page!! We’ve been married for THREE YEARS!!!” and both just screaming “I thought I knew you!!” over and over.
---They make up eventually, have an nice roll in the sheets about it, and tell all about it to a-Qing. She had inferred most of it from what Xue Yang had been telling, since he wasn’t hiding much anyways, and she’s in fact Very much supportive to give high and mighty clans hell for abusing the poor.
Hehehe, even if I don’t write it, I’m deciding THIS is the prequel setup for my fic Phantom Threat, where Song Lan gets to Yi City and does what he should have done in canon, which was making a beeline for Xingchen and tell him the ugly truth. Except here, xxc already knows (and Song-daozhang doesn’t take it well, exactly...)

Follow up to that other anon: If JGY wasn't the main villain of the story and he was just another regular good dude, do you think there is any other canon character with enough story scraps available who could have stepped up and been the main villain? For example, could Xueyang's arc have been viably extended to make him the main antagonist? Who are some other possibilities, and how would you rewrite their plotlines to pose a great threat to the world of cultivation?
It's not just about their ability to do evil, it's also about will and ambition and ability. How far is that character willing to go? What are they hoping to get in the end? Are they capable of doing what they need/want to do?
My short answer is that no, only Jin Guangyao had what it took.
Jin Guangyao's will, ambition, and ability were second to none and led him to become a tyrant over the cultivation world. He was the first (and perhaps only) Chief Cultivator! And even when he sat on top, he was still stabbing at the people beneath him to ensure his position. He had a unique blend of entitlement, intelligence, skill, charm, and lack of empathy that allowed him to do what he did to get where he was.
The problem is that the other characters had limits. Some of them were just too cowardly to go that far. Some of them had codes. Some of them just didn't care enough to try.
Wen Chao shares several similarities with Jin Guangyao except Wen Chao is scared of the right things. He has been thoroughly insulted by Wei Wuxian and so wants to torture him, he wants to melt his core and hear him scream because Wei Wuxian did, in fact, nearly get him killed, but Wen Chao immediately backs off at the mere possibility of Wei Wuxian coming back as a fierce corpse. Wen Chao acknowledges the kind of supernatural world they live in and recognizes there are lines he shouldn't cross.
Jin Guangyao has no such limits. Nothing is sacred. He has no awareness that there are consequences to his actions. He shows no awareness that there even are victims of his crimes.
The dilemma with trying to slot Xue Yang as the main villain is that he is in part what Jin Guangyao made him. Xue Yang was Jin Guangyao's subordinate for several years and it shows. And that's not to say Xue Yang wouldn't or couldn't have gone full-bad without Jin Guangyao, but the pre-Jin-Guangyao Xue Yang was just some criminal while the Xue Yang we see in Yi City has copied Jin Guangyao's behaviors and skills.
But even if Xue Yang got to where he was without Jin Guangyao's influence and help, that still leaves a question of will and ambition.
At the time of Xiao Xingchen's death, Xue Yang is the greatest demonic cultivator alive. The one and only thing he seems to want, however, is to bring Xiao Xingchen back. We see in canon how he remains in Yi City even after it becomes a literal ghost town. He simply shows no motivation or reason to go super villain. The rest of the cultivation world is not just forgotten but it is useless to him--and we see from his background that he never liked or respected cultivators/the elite classes anyway. He killed the sect he needed to kill and he seemed pretty OK with leaving it at that.
Perhaps the story changes and Xue Yang's murders in Yi City have drawn attention from the cultivation world and they have come to hunt him down. So he starts building his undead army ala Wei Wuxian. Yi City to Xue Yang is now the Burial Mounds to Wei Wuxian. It's big and bold and horrible! Maybe his army is sweeping across the cultivation world when Wei Wuxian is resurrected. Maybe Xue Yang has fallen off the deep end completely and has been coercing people into using the sacrifice technique to bring the Yiling Patriarch back.
(Because if Jin Guangyao is good, you've lost the reason for Mo Xuanyu's insanity and backlash of abuse by his family which drive him to resurrect Wei Wuxian.)
This still lacks all the manipulation, political intrigue, backstabbing, and general drama inherent in a MDZS story with Jin Guangyao as the main villain. Jin Guangyao was cunning and likeable enough to make connections with everyone, be trusted by everyone, and thus place everyone in danger. He was dangerous because he was hiding in plain sight, pretending to be what everyone thought he was, while all the other antagonists were red flagged at their introductions.

A Land of Myth, a Time of Magic
a land of myth, a time of magic by soultana
The Great Dragon leans a little closer, regarding him with curiosity. “Wei Wuxian, you are our final hope.”
Wei Wuxian has to pinch himself again. “That doesn't make any…”
“Your destiny has been written in the stars for eons. You will bring peace and prosperity to our wretched land. This is your fate, Wei Wuxian."
“Oh…” Wei Wuxian sucks in a breath through his teeth. “Uh, maybe you have the wrong guy?”
The dragon speaks calmly. “That is not possible."
When Wei Wuxian leaves his home and comes to Gusu, it's with every intention of starting a fresh, new, quiet life. But that quickly flies out the window when he finds out he's—supposedly—meant to fulfil a grand destiny and change the whole world for the better. On top of that, he's meant to do this alongside the esteemed Prince Wangji of Gusu. Sounds good, doesn't it? Except for the fact that:
1. The use of magic is strictly forbidden in the kingdom 2. He's a sorcerer
What could possibly go wrong?
(A lot.)

AU ask: How does it go if XY and JGY meet again after both surviving canon with at least happy-adjacent endings?
oooh interesting. I mean, depends on their respective endings and how happy-adjacent they are/what form that takes. in honesty as far as Xue Yang goes I don't know that he's going to be anything approaching happy as long as Xiao Xingchen stays dead, unfortunately, which is a major bummer considering the, uh, likelihood of that happening. I've gone on record saying that by canon era Xue Yang is running on fumes and running out of fumes. I think Jin Guangyao's chances are a little better; I feel like while he might not be happy fleeing the country with his mother's body and never coming back, he could live with it, at least.
but taking plausibility out of the picture...I mean, honestly I think they'd both be happy for each other. or, well, Jin Guangyao would be happy for Xue Yang in a pretty straightforward way, because I do think he genuinely liked and cared about Xue Yang, he was just a huge liability and a loose cannon. I know there's theories going around that Jin Guangyao wasn't behind Xue Yang's near death at all - that he turned him loose but was basically just putting him under a cup and letting him outside - but I don't tend to go with that read because (a) I find it crunchier if there's the conflicted feelings but ultimately :\ what are the options, realistically and (b) while we do know that Jin Guangyao will leave extreme liabilities alive (Sisi, to name one), I think that also requires him feeling like he has some kind of ability to control them, and Xue Yang is just. "controlling" Xue Yang is, I think, always kind of a function of just pointing him more or less in the direction you want him to go and managing the collateral damage.
but I don't think Jin Guangyao was upset finding out he survived. I think it might even be a bit of a relief, even if it is potentially concerning for self-preservation reasons.
but yeah, all that being said, basically for Jin Guangyao I think it would be this sort of indulgent "oh that's nice for him, good" and some relief because a happy Xue Yang is a substantially less dangerous Xue Yang. and for Xue Yang I think Jin Guangyao's at least continued survival would actually really delight him, the more so if it was in spite of or after everybody turns on Jin Guangyao, because Xue Yang would be like.
YEAH!!! FUCK EM A-YAO GET YOURS :D in the enthusiastic way he gets whenever people Xue Yang likes less (most of them) end up losing out to Jin Guangyao. as far as he's concerned they deserve it and a-Yao is too nice and probably everyone involved should suffer more. he has ideas and will share them in detail and at length. whatever Xue Yang's resentments of or anger at Jin Guangyao about anything, he is always going to take his side against...pretty much anybody else in the entire cultivation world, with the exception of Xiao Xingchen (and maybe a-Qing, and maybe Song Lan by proxy, depending).
Jin Guangyao, regardless of how things played out, is probably feeling substantially less triumphant about any of it than Xue Yang is on his behalf. particularly if his "victory" just entails "survival." but that's why Xue Yang has to do it for him.
(the funny thing about all of this though is that while I said up there that Jin Guangyao's chances might be a little better, I meant that purely in terms of what he needs to survive. unfortunately, there are a lot more people a lot more invested in tearing Jin Guangyao down than there are people who care what happens to Xue Yang - so in that sense, purely practically speaking, the odds of him getting out of this story alive are, in fact, worse.)

following the theme of "feral xxc headcanons" can you give me some headcanons about Baoshan Sanren and her feral little sect and how everyday life looked on the mountain?
A lot of it was chores.
I mean, there was certainly martial arts training and memorizing of sacred texts and seated meditation and spiritual healing )clearly they teach some impressive doctoring), but the rest of the day was chores. They’re a self-sufficient community. They garden (herbs and food) and fish and go into the woods for nuts and berries and other edible plants.
They sew and weave and clean and build. There are just enough members of the not-sect that people can specialize (Xiao Xingchen, for example, spent a lot of time in the herb garden but never learned to thatch a roof so there you go), but not enough people that anyone could go without working. A lot of the busier work is characterized as meditative exercises, and it’s frowned upon to use spiritual energy. So people sweep-meditate and weed-mediate.
The older kids help raise the younger kids and everybody pitches in. At times it’s a lot like a multigenerational family. People eat and sleep and spar together. More experienced elders pair with younger ones to teach them any number of things.
It’s both very egalitarian, shockingly so compared to the rest of the world, and very regimented. Everyone pays each other a lot of respect. The only places where hierarchy really remains is in age. People respect and obey their elders and everyone takes that very seriously. Other than that, though, people tend to be blunt with one another and everyone assumed to be at everyone else’s disposal. Time is shared, the work is shared.
There’s not a lot of privacy in most of the living quarters, but there is a whole mountain to explore so if someone took off for a few days of wilderness living, no one batted an eye, especially if they came back with, say, fish and newly woven basket. People know each other’s business. They share things with each other. People don’t have much in the way of their own possessions - mostly their swords and other small things.
And it’s, of course, Daoist. There’s a true dedication to passivity, remaining apart from the world (obviously), and not leaving much of a mark. People are expected to get along and if they can’t, spend time on their own rather than argue or fight. Too much attachment is frowned upon, whether that means of possessions or less tangible things. Gentleness and inaction and passive endurance are virtues, so things don’t change often. (It’s a lot easier to accomplish this on the mountain and Xiao Xingchen begins to stray immediately from this path when he enters the world, because suddenly he has things he wants to achieve and accomplish.)
It’s a lot less orthodox though than the sort of Daoist monasteries and sects you might find off the mountain. Partially because they don’t keep up with the times. Partially because Baoshan Sanren is an eccentric. And in general they’re not big with rules. More guidelines. So Xiao Xingchen actually learned a lot from Song Lan when it came to what people would expect a wandering daoshi to do and say, rather than what he would do automatically.
Listen. They’re just weird up there. At least Xiao Xingchen never cut off anyone’s beard, Cangse Sanren.

Summary: When Wei Wuxian discovers a sick A-Yuan after the Wens leave him to go sacrifice themselves, his only focus becomes finding a way to save this innocent child. But he’ll need all the help he can get to maintain his slowly sliding control over the Yin Tiger Seal for long enough to find a safe refuge—at least for A-Yuan, if not himself.
With Jin Guangshan clamoring for Wei Ying’s head and the rest of the clans not far behind, Lan Wangji finds himself on a race against time and across the countryside to find Wei Ying and keep him safe. But detours abound, and Lan Wangji doesn’t always know how to express his feelings in a way that Wei Ying will understand.
Will they be able to find what they need in time to make a difference? Will they be able to say anything if they do?
My Comments: Too late for a proper review, but here, have an excerpt of dad lwj collecting little chicks under his wing as he searches for wwx and a-yuan:
Excerpt: A-Qing is in the process of caking white powder over A-Yu’s face, assumedly in an attempt to hide the black eye he’s still sporting, which is today joined by a split lip, when Lan Wangji finds them. He frowns at the sight. [...]
A-Yu squeaks and ducks behind A-Qing, hiding his face, but she moves out of the way and gestures at her handiwork. “Doesn’t he look like a courtly young lady?”
It is possible that a courtly young lady might look like that, were her makeup applied by a small child who has never touched those paints or seen a courtly young lady in her life. Lan Wangji nods and the children both light up.
“It is time for meditation. Would A-Yu care to join us?”
A-Yu looks ready to faint at the invite, somehow bringing him one step closer to looking like a courtly young lady; perhaps one who has been left stumbling through the woods for several days with no chances to wash her face.
canon divergence, sick a-yuan, POV alternating, divergence post qiongqi path ambush, post burial mounds, wei wuxian is in a fragile mental state, wei wuxian & xiao xingchen, lan wangji & song zichen, accidental baby acquisition, except a-qing and mo xuanyu are older than that, lan wangji is a good dad, accidental parenthood, found family, trauma, fluff and angst, pining, baoshan sanren, kid fic, healing and recovery, hurt/comfort, emotional hurt/comfort, love confessions, getting together, everyone nopes out of the cultivation world, songxiao, adoption, happy ending, MDZS RBB, @bonbonyenne, @alightbuthappypen
