Theory: clocks restrain the passage of time, most efficiently while you are looking at one, but even just having a clock handy to keep checking slows things enough. One day, your phone dies so you can't check the time before and after you shower to know how long it took. You exit the shower and find that everything has evolved into crabs. Based on a true story (something like this happened to me on Thursday).

I am gonna drop this info here because i feel like it will be beneficial to a lot of people to know this.

If you ever noticed that things look bleaker and problems seems bigger when you are up late at night and tired, its not just a sensation or impression: its your brain actively putting up ancestral survival measures.

Our brain has not changed much from the times where we lived in caves, and back then we had less problems, but infinitely more immediate ones (Predators & cataclysms).

The fight or flight instinct exists as one of the ways to increase our survival chances in these situations, with adrenaline "rerouting" the blood flow to increase around muscles, heart, diaphragm and brain to increase their responsivity.

This mechanism has many triggers and certain situations can also make the response easier to fire up.

One of these is lack of rest.

Our brains have evolved to interpret sleep deprivation as a result of a potentially dangerous situation. The amygdala, which is the part of our brain which switches on the fight or flight response, therefore gets more sensitive. This means we become much more emotional, and thus feel more stressed.

This response often also worsens the way we perceive our problems, and could often lead us to even feel despair at something that we did not think much about when fully rested.

This is not to invalidate anyone's emotions or their worries around their own problems, but please know that, when things suddenly feel desperate and you get suddenly overtaken by fear of not being able to deal with your problem, going to sleep or taking a moment to rest can help.
