How do you get into DCA? I've been meaning to see what the buzz about Sun and Moon are, but I'd like context first!

Oh god, okay. Uhm!! You might want to sit tight for this one, Anon, because I'mma go full on ramble/essay writing mode—

All under the cut! It actually got real long LMAO also spoilers if you don't know much or anything about FNAF: Security Breach

Okay so the first appearance of the DCA, or otherwise known as the Daycare Attendant, can be seen in FNAF: Security Breach that was released back in December of 2022, if I'm not mistaken. I don't think anyone expected them to pop up, let alone the new Glam Rock designs of the "main four". I'm saying "main four", because Freddy and Chica are the only ones that stuck from the OG characters when Scott Cawthon (the creator of the game and a buncha other novels in relation) was still developing the game. Security Breach (SB) is handled by Steel Wool now so things are very different from this update and onwards. Alright! Back to the DCA.

So basically the DCA is canonically an animatronic that tends to children in the Pizzaplex' Daycare! You can probably see many people, including me, draw the DCA as two characters but actually! The DCA only has one body and shares these two characters inside it— Sun and Moon. Now, whether these two characters are two different identities of their own or just theatrical pizzazz for the animatronic is still not fully delved into, I think. But it's commonly accepted that they're two separate personalities.

In SB, Sun is portrayed as an upbeat, optimistic, and over-all friendly character, while Moon is seen as more of a threat— however, the fandom sees him as a gremlin with a cat-like personality so. Y'know. Very appealing, IMO. But! There's this new update that came in just recently after Ruin (this one's after SB, but there's little context to Sun and Moon as separate beings and the focus is more on Eclipse, a secret third identity inside their shared body), and it's called Help Wanted 2. Here, Sun is seen as more sassy, bitchy even, irritable, and overall impatient. Moon practically still stays the same though. People speculate that Sun acts so differently in this game because of two things: 1) You play as an adult whereas in SB, you play as Gregory, a child that snuck into the Pizzaplex; and 2) Trauma— for being cooped up into the ruined/abandoned state of the Plex for so long with their consciousness still intact. Moon isn't any different because in SB, he's a threat due to him being affected by the same virus (the Vanny/Afton virus) that affected the other Glamrocks too! This virus basically made the animatronics lock targets on you, Gregory, the player. I'm not sure if the virus was fully removed after Security Breach in Moon or he just acts like a gremlin by default with the addition of the command to kill the target set by the virus. He's just skrunkly like that <33

Alright now that you know the basic lore of their canonical characters, let's talk fanon. So you see these two right here?

That's what they canonically look like. We call them the biblically accurate designs WAHAHAHA. Anywho, fanon is sorta different because during the time that SB was released, there was barely any substance for the DCA's lore. Everyone basically grasped on to them for different reasons. Some really liked their design, some liked the concept of a parental/guardian figure, some liked their personality, some just liked having a fresh new set of characters, some even relate to their dynamics due to having DID, etc etc.

This lack of lore during this time was what made the DCA so malleable. Which in turn, made them basically appeal to anyone who's willing to give them a shot. There are people who interpret them as siblings, some just friends, some ship them with each other, some ship them with their OCs or their self-inserts. There are also so many variations of their designs by many fanartists, different AUs (literally so many! I haven't seen THIS many AUs since Undertale blew up), and even their personalities were tweaked too! They can go from complete platonic, warm, and cuddly, to complete romantic, suggestive, and x-rated in a hot minute when portrayed in the fandom. And again, that's because we don't have as much lore and confirmed canonical substance as compared to the other animatronics at the moment. Though we are getting them slowly with each new updates! Lots of theories coming up too but I won't delve into that.

I personally liked the DCA back then because I liked the concept of a character having multiple identities and sharing a single body— specifically, a robot one. I only dipped my toe with the DCA during early 2022 but when I joined here on Tumblr during late 2022? It was a completely new and different experience. I got sucked into the fandom head first thanks to all the fanart and fanfics I consumed while I was adjusting to a lot of changes in uni at the time. They help me cope in a lot of ways. Not to mention the DCA fandom here on Tumblr— GODDD. I love them, I love you guys. I will never forget all the kind words and gifts I received from people in the DCA fandom. They're all so welcoming and supportive, it's very heartwarming. I've made a lot of good friends and moots in this fandom and I don't think I'm leaving it anytime soon. If I do, then it's just a little break to fixate on other characters. But ultimately, the DCA and this fandom, by extension, is what I go back to when I need comfort. It's home to me.

Okaaaaay that was very. Very long I hope I gave you enough context! I don't think I did because of the many other things that go on here (/pos) so I implore you to run around and explore for yourself. There are many foods and desserts to go around for everyone, young and old! But if you decide that this buffet isn't for you, then you're very much free to look for other options. We'll welcome you back just as much either way!

I created my main OC, Remington (Remi) 13 years ago with my friend, @thekinkyleopard , owner of Levi, (she also owns Connie, Alistar, Biziil, Elex, and Sy) and have been using him ever since (he’s super fun and adorable to torture >:3)

I love to draw and otherwise make art, and sometimes I like to write, even if getting it perfect takes a little time. I frequently post my art of my main OC, Remington, and his mate, Levi, as well as the occasional fic when the creativity allows lmao. I do always have my requests open to anyone (any of my own, or Kezzie’s thekinkyleopard OCs only!)

Hi all! It's another fic rec posts!

A non-exhaustive selection of favorites -- this fandom is so fucking talented it blows me away. Thank you to everyone out there writing/drawing/creating such an incredible wealth of gorgeous material, I want to shout about it all the time and if I have loved your work and failed to tell you, I hope you'll forgive me.

I've broken the following down by theme/category - all gentlebeard-centric, mostly E-rated long fics because that's how it is.

Hell or High Water

There's one fic in this category and it's Hell or High Water (@mottlemoth, 250K+, WIP, E). I know you're already reading it but if you've somehow just emerged from a year-long coma and this is your first contact with the internet since your miraculous recovery, then please let me introduce you to Hell or High Water. This fic is a world unto itself - unreal l how many lines from this beast I think about on a regular basis.

Spectacular sci-fi where Ed is an engineer on a spaceship and STE/DE is the ship's AI. Poignant and tender and laden with moments that will take your breath away.

Delightfully funny and sweet fake-boyfriends trope and jealous misunderstandings when Stede's ex shows up and Ed helps Stede avoid him.

Flaming hot "consequences of 'platonic' friends sleeping in the same bed" one-shot.

⬥Wayfaring by @justkeeptrekkin -- 35K, E

Another deserved fandom classic, Ed and Stede marooned together on an island, a gorgeous slow unfolding of the beautiful life they build together.

⬥If You Were Mine to Keep by Pamplemousse (@mysterybees) -- 75K+ (WIP), E

Incredibly sweet, romantic forced marriage story where Ed is made to marry an aristocrat and Stede agrees to be the one to marry him. Instant chemistry and a powerful friendship that slowly blossoms into more. Pure loveliness.

Fun Sex

My all-time favorite genre: zany sexual chemistry and adventures in sex positivity. "Erotic friendship," maybe? Whatever you call it, it's the best. Started compiling recs for this section and realized I had multiple fics for every author, so I'm going to recommend authors instead!

❖afterism (@onlylostphysics) -- creator of the exquisite, paradigm-shifting "kissing is what lovers do" series, an S1 canon-parallel in which Ed and Stede become friends with benefits from day one. Pure perfection, every installment is hot and beautiful as a standalone or in series but I particularly love elegant and restrained (Ed orchestrates his own ravishment under the guise of teaching Stede how to handle a hostage), and all dressed up (fingering and playful orgasm denial and Ed being head over heels in love, just mind-meltingly hot and romantic).

❖alsaurus (@ofmd-alsaurus) -- another who can do no wrong in my book. Every fic is so sweet and sexy and uniquely hilarious; I'm particularly partial to Good Habits (Stede has an unusual way of getting off, Ed likes to watch) and There's No Accounting for Taste (Ed tries to set a sexy trap and things go off the rails).

❖Jimsnose (alivamae) -- snappy and hot and always deliciously unpredictable, I love everything they've written but especially The Theater of Fear (Stede helps Ed cope with the guilt of nearly killing him through the healing magic of roleplay)(seriously though this fic is so delightful I just got pulled into another re-read) and Golden Teachers (Ed introduces Stede to magic mushrooms)(I am a sucker for low-stakes recreational drug use in fics and this one is exquisite, now with searingly-hot sequel Penis Envy).

❖heartroots (@bonesofyourheart) -- another master of the hot/funny/sweet/endearing/hot again genre blending, especially Aphrodisiac (Stede struggles with finishing too quickly and tries a magic potion to help him last longer) and If You're Too Shy, Then Let Me (Stede gets an "accidental" front-row seat to Ed's alone time).

House Specials

Finally, a few of my own fics I'm especially proud of - check them out if you like!

⬥Touching Your Goodness -- E, 14K

Ed and Stede are back together but not yet Back Together when two strangers come into the mix and make them both jealous - mutual pining and comedic misunderstandings with bonus POTC (Sparrow/Norrington) crossover.

⬥Skeleton Season -- 8K, E

Smut and fluff after Stede gets cursed by some famously haunted treasure. Just in time for the Halloween season!

⬥The Healing Kind -- 22K, E

Post-S1 reunion where Ed is depressed and self-destructive, and Izzy teams up with Lucius and Mary to get him back together with Stede: angst to hurt/comfort to fluff to smut.

⬥Such as They May Be -- 6K, E

A lighthearted "Stede catches up with the Revenge" fix-it where Ed can't help loving Stede's newfound confidence.

I wanted to see if you draw Yui and Rukiyui's ship as before? In the past, you used to draw a lot of art from these two people, but now, after almost a year has passed, I haven't seen any new art of Yui from you.

And it's also very sad that I see some of fandom completely forget Yui after joined OC and play roleplay. While she is the main character and heroine

Unfortunately, this is much more evident on Tumblr and many fandoms forgot Yui. But I see on Twitter that all the Japanese fandom appreciate Yui and always draw her arts. Almost all Japanese fandoms are more interested in drawing Yui than OC. Please don't get me wrong, I like OCs.

But I will be really sad if OC's role becomes more famous than Yui's and fandom forget her . I just want the fandom on Tumblr to care about Yui like Twitter and the Japanese fandom.

🧩 Hello, Anon. I've only been in the DL fandom for about 4 years and I haven't really seen what the Japanese side of the fandom is like, but I definitely still adore Rukiyui as a ship and I don't intend to quit drawing them altogether. It's undetermined when my next Rukiyui artwork will be since I mostly spend my days writing than drawing but I hope to draw them whenever I have the inspiration for that. I'm a busy adult too and have many friends I wish to draw for, their OCs included. So, it's less a thing against Yui/forgetting about Yui, and more so I've increased in popularity overall since my last Rukiyui art.

Back when I was drawing them a lot more frequently, I really didn't have many friends at all. No one to gush about their OCs with me, and not even anyone to talk about Yui with, either. Not to get overly sentimental, but it was a lonely time for me. I really adored drawing Ruki and Yui together because I drew her in situations I wished to see them in. For the longest time, I admired them silently while distancing myself from many people in the community for personal reasons. I can assure you these two did, and still do, hold a special place in my heart and they always will.

Also, I really do not think Yui is being forgotten whatsoever. Many, many people love her here on Tumblr. I already know for a fact whenever I did a Yui artwork in the past, that she would get way more attention than my art of the boys ever would. Why? Because Yui is seen through positive light as of right now. If you've seen my art, then you might notice the solo Yui artworks gain a lot of traction.

There are also many Yui accounts that are active in this fandom. I don't want to tag them directly since I don't want to bother people's notifications with this particular ask but @/yuikomorii is an amazing blog for all things Yui. You will see she gets hundreds of likes on everything the admin posts as well, from edits to analyses. This just shows that Yui is absolutely thriving.

There's also @/yui--komori who posts Yui-related content and a really active Yui roleplayer in @/diabolikxyui as well as @/yui-komori-ask and her new account. I suggest you check these out as well.

I'm sorry if my words come off as rude or defensive but, back to the topics of the friends I've made here, I also have LOTS of wonderful besties who draw me all kinds of things even when I didn't ask for it. One day, I really, REALLY want to repay them in some way with an art of my own. This involves their OCs.

And please also remember that this is a Ruki-focused blog. The only consistent thing here on this blog is that everything involves Ruki. That means he will interact with both Yui and original characters. There is no favoritism here on this blog, whether you are a canon character or an original one. That's one of my main purposes for making this blog, after all: so that all can interact with Ruki. This is a safe place for everybody.

I'm sure Yui, if she existed, would support an inclusive idea like this. We all pride her on her kindness and pure heart, right? I just want what's best for everyone. It was never my intention to offend anybody with the lack of Yui content here. If you check out my archive, you'll see there are at least 75 posts under the "Yui Komori" tag. That alone is a lot of content to read if you haven't already.

The reason why people make their OCs in the first place is because they want to forge their own story and live vicariously through their characters. Not all people want to do that through Yui, which is completely okay. All my friends adore her, but they don't resonate with her, if that makes sense? As in, they'd rather project through their OCs than her. Let's try to be supportive of both sides here.

Ultimately, I can assure you that Yui Komori will never be forgotten or disrespected on this blog. At least, not out of character, lol. Because we know Ruki can be crazy sometimes. 🧩

Hi! As requested, some (very) random stuff. I am sorry you're having a bad day/week. February can go suck an egg in my humble opinion.

Meta: I was 0 days old when I found out that according to DA lore, there are no dwarven slaves in Tevinter. (because of the importance of the lyrium trade) I was refreshing my memory about Dwarven Ambasadoria and it says so on the wiki but without a source where that comes from. It seems unlikely to me, but ok.

Comic thing (Those who speak) that bothers me mighty: So, in the game, Isabela frees the slaves on the ship she is escorting. Because she agreed to do it without knowing that the cargo were living people. She lets them go. The guy is pissed mighty and that is why she agreed to steal the tome of Koslun in return for him. It's an entire plot! And in the comic... She kills the slaves. What the fuck Bioware.

Character: Varric's necklace has this running joke about Cock-ring necklace Ken. But as much as the makers of the doll didn't have a clue where that fashion came from, maybe Varric too wanted to be flashy! But ended up with a cock ring around his neck?

I was relistening DA2 banter and Varric has a dialogue with Choir boy about Bianca's cocking ring. And I kinda had a thought. What if the necklace is actually a spare part that he kept from the time Bianca made Bianca the crossbow?

Also, dunno why but everyone everywhere claims Varric is ENTP type, but when I sat down and checked it turns out he is very much an ENFP. It matters to me for some weird reason.

Also, Isabela/Varric banter is peak aromantic/asexual humor. I believe that Varric is the embodiment of (insert the no throw! dog meme) No sex! Only sexy!

In the comic (the one where they have a Fade trip) Varric in a dream sequence looks more like a human than a dwarf. (the way he is drawn) until he leaves the "vision" and looks like a dwarf again. The new comic (if we are speaking of comics and the way dwarfs are being drawn) has some dwarven ladies. People like the new Varric design. (good for them) I am crying over Dwarven ladies being done dirty.

Dark secret: I am low-key planning to ignore Dragon Age 4. People are hyped. I am like? Annoyed? I have my own canon, whole-ass Inquisition re-write. I don't care.

Also, I never played any dragon age game. I pirated it sure. I managed to create a few characters in a creator but never played further than the opening sequence. My laptop would burn to a crisp. It's really that shitty. I literary watched so many yt walkthroughs and read through the wiki. I often forget that is a weird and not-normal way to enjoy video games.

Another secret: I made a Cadash OC, I had them for so many years. And they are central to the plot of my entire personal Dragon Age Universe. The entire plot of Origins. Appear in DA2 events briefly. Then entire Inquisition. It's an overkill how important I made that character. But it's too late now! I wish I had enough willpower to record it somewhere (drawings, writing) just for the sake of it. Yet I am afraid of how weird it is. Funny, no?

i mean, having isabela - a black woman - be a slaver in the worst place is already an extremely questionable writing decision. i also think it was a shit writing decision but the trail of logic seems to be along the lines of like: isabela gets in debt with the felicisima armada -> gets involved in slave trafficking -> gets cornered by the orlesians in the venefication sea -> slaves were killed (to allow the ship to maneuver since it's implied the ship was slow because the cargo holds were too packed) -> isabela vows never to traffic slaves again -> presumably the next time she's asked to do it anyway, she sets the slaves free? which is still not great. bioware's sliding scale of when slavery is or isnt acceptable is really... hm.

this is making me UNWELL. for so many reasons.

8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in?

i’m really having to wrack my brain for this one because i don’t think i’ve got any, at least not to do with marlo. i’m still half-invested in writing his fic but for the most part, and i swear to god i’ll do that ‘the other side of paradise’ animatic someday, but apart from that i don’t entertain myself with the delusion that i’d actually get it done :’)

the other stuff all belongs to lapsed interests! i had this enormously elaborate post-canon universe for the four swords, the type where i worldbuilt a new dark world / evolution of the twilight realm / parallel to lorule out of whole cloth. or tried to, at least. i was like, twelve, so... (the gist was rolling back shadow link’s slapdash excuse of a redemption arc, making him “king” of the dark world, but really a puppet for the Secret Banished Fourth Goddess—the tetraforce is a fun idea, sue me—so she could like. get her revenge or whatever. i’m still fond of the idea to name her ‘ikana’ though, like the place in majora’s mask.)

nothing came of it, but i still have fsa lore memorized front to back & shadow link has his own little niche in my heart 🖤 the first chunk was structured like an actual zelda game from the links’ pov, with a bunch of macguffins and items to find, then an intermission, and then a more traditional fantastical story following shadow link trying to restore light/balance to hyrule while the actual four swords are separated. (admittedly, i don’t like to ship the links, but you’ll pry the green/shadow dynamic in this timeline from my cold, dead hands.)

20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy

OLDER FOLKS/DIFFERENT FACES!!! i don’t know if a whole lot of folks find it hard—in fact i would argue it really isn’t—and some do it a lot better than me, but IMO they’re way more fun and interesting to draw than the same “pretty face” template another dozen times. i do not care about your skinny slim-face button-nose bishie-boy oc. give me a big nose, imperfect teeth, particular lip shapes, different facial proportions, smile lines and crow’s feet! they’re so pleasing and fun and create that extra distinctive Flavor, and it’s just better character design to implement those type of things.

i’m never not gonna have more fun and be prouder of the end result when i’ve got to draw a character that presses the definition of ‘attractive’. marlo is way handsomer than i ever intended to make them, but a lot of that’s from their more unique features and how much i love drawing them. and like, i’m not joking. over half my non-fandom artfight bookmarks are weird old guys (gender-neutral). i love it (also i think machinery would be really fun to draw but i haven’t had the courage to give it a shot)

30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated

i could list a lot, tbh. my art is fantastic. marlo’s outfit meme got plenty of notes, but i love it to death. that tango redesign i did got an eighth of the old version’s notes and i’ll die mad about it. this sango-themed one with the fun perspective. that valentine’s art i did and stare at sometimes because it’s just plush. that tits-out marlo moping in their penthouse i never finished. OR MY STICKER FOR THE NSBSZINE’S CONTEST. marlo glaring over their shoulder asmr. and though it is now an entire year old i’ll never forget how hard i fought for those 20 notes on that full scene of nori in octo valley

I have watched both seasons of The Legend of Vox Machina and read the Critical Role: Vox Machina comics. I am currently watching the stream (albeit slowly—I've just finished the Briarwood arc) and reading Kith and Kin, and am relying on what I've engaged with (as well as the wiki and my friends) to pull together a functional canon. If you have recommendations for anything I should look up, or if you notice something I should correct, please feel free to (kindly) let me know!

I love crossovers and AUs and have a million of them. Any verses with significant canon divergence, or significant canon intervention, will have extended biographies available to read. 🍎 KG2 Fanzine Interest Check!

hey everyone, i plan on starting a kindergarten 2 fanzine! :D basically it would be a fanmade book of illustrations and writing, that is centered around the content of kindergarten 2.

we’ve had a lot of fun, interactive stuff within our fandom, as small as it is-- like the kindergala, and dtiys challenges. i thought it would be a great time to band together to create a fanzine, and i’m thinking if we start now we could manage to get it done in time for the 2nd anniversary of kindergarten 2! ( july 29, 2021 ) or later, but the goal is around that timeframe for now

this would be purely for fun, and i would really appreciate it if people could spread the word about this! this post is to see how many people would either be interested in seeing this fanzine created, or how many people want to participate in making it. ( so, y’know, i don’t just set up everything only to have 1 person join or something. )

a few things about the plans for this zine:

it is entirely non-profit, volunteer run, and will be distributed digitally for free as a multi-page pdf. this isn’t a professional thing by any means, and there unfortunately will not be merch available ( i would totally ship out kg-themed buttons if i could, but my school’s button club where i make the buttons is unavailable due to the pandemic, and shipping does, unfortunately, cost money that this zine will not provide)

i will need artists and writers to help create content for the zine, maybe even a few other people to help with the mod team

as of right now, the number of pages will heavily depend on how many artists/writers/creators want to participate and how much content they’re willing to make within the 5-ish month period. i know this is a pretty small fandom, so we won’t be able to make as much content as a large fandom would

the qualifications to apply are not strict at all in terms of skill. i greatly encourage anyone to participate no matter your level as an artist or writer! this is supposed to be a fun fandom-involved project, after all :D

however, i do ask that you maintain a level of semi-professionalism with your attitude towards this project. even with a small fandom, this is still a huge project to take on and i sincerely ask that you only participate if you believe you’re capable of handling what’s expected of you

the zine will mostly be canon-based

again, depending on the amount of applications, content might just include the missions ( around 11-ish applicants minimum ) , or the characters ( around 27 applicants minimum )

ships, au’s, and oc’s are allowed! i just ask that these type of things don’t outnumber the main canon content, so there might be a limited amount of slots for these

please don’t be nervous about applying if you’re interested! this isn’t meant to be Super High Quality Professional work, and this my first time doing anything involving a fanzine too lmao, we can learn together :’D

you don’t have to draw/write a new thing for the zine; you can submit old work by all means! as long as it fits the planned parameters for the page sizing. drawing new work is preferred, however, because of the sizing

digital artists: 1 page size 8.5 x 11 inches 300dpi | half page size 8.5 x 5.5 inches 300dpi | 2 page spread 17 x 11 inches 300 dpi -- rgb format, full colour art

traditional artists: don’t worry too much about the size of your picture. just try to take it as clear as possible, or scan in high quality. be aware your photo may be touched up digitally by the graphics editor if needed

A random thought: Because it’s Disney, Descendants doesn’t touch on prostitution, human trafficking, and violent sexuality and at a very early age that the VK had to live, as happens in the real world in invasions, guerrillas (child soldiers), street children or centers penitentiaries not properly regulated (such as the Isle of the Lost, a prison without guards and any law). But I don’t touch on the subject because it’s something very real and strong to expose it like that with the fandom but due to my profession and work, it’s something that my brain always remembers. Also, I don't like it when people treat these topics just for shock value.

An unpopular opinion: It's visibly awkward that ships and popular characters are mostly white. And I mean in the content of the fandom. Although we talk about the racism that exists in the canon, very few people seek to balance the numbers with new contributions (whether with content with canon characters, OCs, or y/n). I don't know if it makes sense. But it seems that it is easy to talk about racism but not do something actively to include BIPOC characters (This is why I get excited when I find people drawing Audrey, Jay, Evie, Uma, and others without lightening their skin tone or writing fics with BIPOC y/n or creating things with the BIPOC canon characters as their main characters)

Most badass character: Uma

Pairing I am not a fan of: Any ship with Mal. Especially Mal canon. And I HATE Mal x Uma, Audrey x Mal and Ben x Mal. Because of the toxic and abusive environment.

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another):

Chad Charming. From the start, Chad, Cinderella's son was turned into... a terrible character. Well, in the beginning, he is intelligent and manipulative, who knows how to use his charm against others. Brilliant. Cool. I can work with that. He may have an arc about learning about his wrongdoing and using his privileges to help others who don't. But no, the character just went downhill and became everyone's joke.

Also, Ben, obviously. The movies wouldn't exist without him and he became an accessory to Mal. Disney can only write hero and damsel in distress, it seems. Because they do that to Ben. A tool to move the plot. My poor golden boy.

Favourite friendship: Jay and Lonnie. Give me two best friends who constantly joke around, kick each other's butt, compete in even the most ridiculous things, are affectionate with each other and even if they don't plan on it, they spend time together (I'm seeing you Jay and "I'm not going to invite no one to the ball but I'm going to dance with Lonnie all night ")

Character I want to adopt or be adopted by: I'm going to adopt Celia and no one will be able to stop me!

002: Bumarry,

When of if I started shipping it: Technically I answered this here. Also, from looking for Huma and Buma fics, I ended up finding my first Bumarry and... Oh, I got hooked on the idea.

My thoughts: They are my OTPoly (One True Polyship). I love them. Because they allow me to mix the variables and create new scenarios. After all the damage Ben has gone through, I inevitably want to give him the best and the best is Huma. What else can I say? It’s absolute logic.

What makes me happy about them: The devotion, affection, and strength they would have. Ben and Uma are very different leaders who complement each other very well and I could only trust Harry to take care of the two of them and give them the freedom they deserve. Ben is incredibly loving and that's something both Harry and Uma deserve to feel, Uma is incredibly protective and Ben needs that backing to rule and Harry needs that to stay alive every 5 seconds. Harry's loyalty is unprecedented, he would see to not only that everything is up to Ben and Uma's standards, but he would personally see that their dreams come true.

They make her mean, jealous, cruel, or things like that to Ben and Harry. And this I came across once: They make Harry gay and that his relationship/dynamic with Uma is pure appearance. I had no problem with Harry being gay, but the justification for his sexual tension with Uma was all... Fake? No, it didn't fit in well with me. I think that's why when you ask me to write Ben/Harry Hook, Uma is there to give support. Don't play dirty with my queen.

How I feel about this character: I love him! He has good intentions. Ben knows that he is in a position of power and struggles to take advantage of his privileges to change things. He is rebellious, the second he is going to take the throne he begins to dismantle the system. Ben has a good heart and wants to help other people. Besides, I love that he has his survival instinct broken.

I am chickened out from gladiator because it is this long and it keeps getting longer is it worth my time to read it ??

... Uh, well. I can’t help but wonder if you’re aware this blog is run by the actual author of the story in question? I don’t know if you expect me to give you a non-biased answer when I’ve considered the story was worth 8 years of my life xD as far as I’m concerned, it absolutely has been worth it, but I can’t speak for the whole wide world when it comes to that. If you want the opinions of readers, there’s probably other blogs run by people who have read the story and who might have critical opinions about it... that may be what you were looking for. If, however, you were deliberately hoping to get my opinion on my own story... well, yes, for me it’s clearly worth it xD Otherwise, I would’ve quit ages ago.

The story is indeed very long and it keeps getting longer, and it will keep getting longer because we’re not done yet and won’t be for a while :’D if you’re the type of reader who can’t stand it when they catch up to stories and have to wait for updates, well, feel free to give it a shot when I’m done writing it, I guess? It’ll be a while until then, but it’s up to you. If you don’t like reading really long stories, then it’s probably better for you if you don’t force yourself to read this one, I know not everyone is ready to dedicate that much time to reading something, especially if they have lots of things to do. Hence, if the length daunts you, that’s alright, it daunts me too and I’m responsible for it xD it’s fine if that deters you from reading it.

But as the way you phrased your question almost sounded like you’re challenging me to give you some sort of sales pitch to catch your attention, let’s see if I can pull it off:

Gladiator is a massive ATLA AU, not only in terms of story length but also scope: it’s a complete rewrite of the entirety of ATLA in a more mature setting, starting chapter 1 with the characters 5 years older than they were in canon. Aang’s adventures in saving the world did not take place here because of a simple enough reason: Katara didn’t accompany Sokka on his boat on the fateful day when they were meant to find Aang, which means the story as we’ve known it simply doesn’t take place. I’ve taken liberties here and there, added some changes from canon when I needed to do so, in order to ensure the story works, but the gist of the story is to set a stage where the Fire Nation marched onwards, practically unopposed, and conquered the Earth Kingdom with the power of Sozin’s Comet (just in case it needs to be clarified, without certain technological developments, Ozai’s wild plan to incinerate the whole world wouldn’t happen, and if Team Avatar isn’t assembled before the Comet shows up, said technological developments simply wouldn’t exist... :’D). I’ve had to figure out how many details would change, how much of the original story would or wouldn’t happen without Team Avatar’s involvement, I think most my choices have been solid, but it’ll be up to you to decide if you think they are or not if you read the story.

The worldbuilding of Gladiator, then, is preeeetty huge and complicated because of that starting point. There’s a lot of elements that are completely new (such as the Gladiator League and all its derivates), some OCs, some lore expansion, so you can definitely say it’s an ambitious project. In a sense, I’ve reset canon to zero, and at the same time I haven’t, which makes things complicated but, for me, really fun to develop. If you’re interested in seeing more of the Avatarverse explored, characters repurposed, with new dynamics and relationships, Gladiator may just be what you’ve been looking for :D

In my experience, the main reason why most people stumble into this fic (other than by sorting FF.net’s ATLA stories by review count and drawing blanks upon glimpsing a Sokkla story on the first page xD) is because they’ve been drawn into Sokkla, or they’re looking for stories centered around Azula or Sokka. Gladiator, evidently, features all three such elements because, obviously, those two are the protagonists and their relationship is the beating heart of the whole tale. I’ve been asked in the past who’s the real protagonist and I honestly still have no idea xD but anyways, if you’re interested in reading a story with a toooooon of Azula character development, even if it takes place across a long, long time, this story may just do the trick. I’ve done the best I could to keep her character as true to what I believed a young adult Azula might become, within the circumstances of this story. She has grown a LOT in 200 chapters, goes without saying (if she hadn’t, I’d be one heck of a failure of an author x’D), so if you’re interested in seeing a slow but effective growth arc for Azula, you’ll certainly find that in Gladiator. Same is true for Sokka, but I think most people who come to this fic for Sokka are interested in seeing him being a badass, which we have plenty of as well xD still, it’s also a long and slow process for Sokka to grow into a powerful warrior, neither him nor Azula start out in the story with all the answers, and they both bump into many hurdles as they navigate their complicated lives.

There’s a lot of humor in Gladiator, perhaps more than expected with a story that has that sort of dark premise, but it’s, on great measure, because Sokka and Azula are inevitably given to banter xD if you want to read a lot of banter between those two, well, you may not be bored in 200 chapters because, while the nature of their exchanges does vary as they both develop, their conversations are usually pretty spirited and they love trying to outsmart each other all the time.

If you are already a Sokkla shipper and the main reason you’re here is because you want more Sokkla goodness in your life... I’ll just say Gladiator has become a bit of a dream come true for me as a Sokkla shipper as well, because it’s the perfect space for me to work with virtually every idea I’ve ever had for these two. Yes, there’s drama and conflict here and there, if you’re not too given to angst there’s a few parts of the story that won’t sit so well with you, though if you love angst you’ll probably enjoy them plenty... yet what I’m most proud of, with this story, is having developed their relationship not only as best I could, but I’ve also attempted to defy typical storytelling structures for romance stories, where the lead couple can’t seem to have a stable relationship because “that would be boring”. Screw that, man: these two have been in a serious relationship together in-story by now for well over half the published chapters, and I’ve had the time of my life writing their dynamics as a couple while the plot continues to develop around them. This, however, is not everyone’s cup of tea, so if you aren’t all that given to seeing such traditional romance storytelling structures dismissed because I wanted to write my favorite ship dealing with all their external struggles while finding strength in the bond they share, Gladiator may not hold your attention long enough for you to devote yourself to reading it beyond chapter 100-ish. On the other hand, if this subversion of romance structure is what you’ve been looking for all your life, or if it’s what you always wanted and never knew you wanted it, or if you’re simply curious as to whether it works or not, Gladiator may suit your interests fairly well. Again, Sokkla is the absolute center of this story, both together and independently, so if you want to see a rewrite of ATLA with them at the core of just... everything? xD that’s absolutely what you’ll find here.

That being said, there’s things I guess you should mind about Gladiator: I have some relatively controversial takes about certain things, including interpretations of fan-favorite characters that some people have been known to take offense over. I, personally, believe my interpretations of those characters don’t deviate that much from canon or that, when they do, the setting itself explains why the deviation works as it does, but due to the fact that I work with a protagonist who was in a villainous role back in ATLA, her relationships with some characters can be more complicated than a lot of people seem to believe they should be. Hence, if you’re not particularly adverse to reading content that brings up big questions about the motivations of certain characters, or how they’d react if the story from ATLA hadn’t happened exactly as it did, you’ll have enough fun in Gladiator. If, however, you don’t particularly care to see anything that shows beloved characters in a not-so-flattering light, this story may not be for you (though, if you’re willing to humor me and allow my story to question your perception of those characters, feel free to try the story as well).

There’s also a variety of dark themes and situations in Gladiator, something that any reader should be warned about in this day and age: I am 100% against violence for the sake of violence, to name one such subject, and I generally try to portray it with as much nuance as possible, but even if I feature my own characters criticizing their violent world and wanting to put an end to the strife caused by the Fire Nation, some of the violence in Gladiator may be a little too much for the readers who prefer the tone of the original ATLA. Hence, if that’s how it is for you, it’s another reason to approach the story with caution. I won’t pretend I’ve handled every theme and subject perfectly, but I’ve never wanted the darker moments to feel gratuitous in any way, so if you’re open to reading a darker take on the Avatarverse, this may work for you after all.

Alas! If you want to see Azula growing out of the toxic Fire Nation indoctrination, if you want to see Sokka gaining confidence and strength as a man and warrior, if you want to see a fleshed-out but still very much villainous Ozai, if you want to see Toph fulfilling her dreams of joining an all-out fighting league where she can beat people up for a living, if you want to see a myriad of secondary ATLA characters (like Song, or Shoji!) given new lives and even genuine protagonism, if you want to see Zuko discovering he’s allowed to just... be happy? xD Gladiator may prove interesting enough for you.

Furthermore, if you want to see Azula being true friends with Mai and Ty Lee, discovering a dragon, developing new firebending styles, confronting her misplaced beliefs about herself, rebelling subtly (and lately, not so subtly) against her father, growing into a great leader who could change the Fire Nation’s nefarious direction... aaand if you want to see Sokka fighting creatively (sometimes with TWO swords!), navigating the dangerous waters of interacting with Fire Lord Ozai, staying true to his beliefs while also learning that the world is not as black-and-white as he was raised to think it was, understanding himself better and making the most of his potential as a quick learner, writing embarrassing haiku and being an unapologetic rebel who goes toe-to-toe with Heads of State just because he can... yep. Probably read it? xD

Lastly... if you want to see Sokka and Azula grow through their mistakes, learning to understand each other, fighting side by side, training together, dancing to no music, learning the underrated pleasure of proper communication in a relationship, sassing each other left and right, flirting in ridiculous ways, taunting each other in many regards, laughing at each other’s terrible jokes, protecting each other fiercely, challenging each other to a spicy ramen eating contest, discovering indirect bending, being highly inappropriate at times and places where they shouldn’t be, making long, dangerous yet fun journeys together, sneaking around to meet up when they’re not supposed to, standing by each other in their darkest moments, watching over the other when they’re sick/injured, being ready to sacrifice virtually anything for each other, and even defying and defeating even death to save each other...? Well, I don’t know if there’s any other stories where you might find all of this, but I can guarantee you’ll find it in Gladiator :)

If none of this is convincing enough... that’s a shame, but I understand. If it convinced you to give it a shot, however... I guess I’ll just hope you enjoy it enough to stick around! :) thanks for taking my story into consideration regardless of whatever you decide. Have a nice day!

i know that the prospect of joining the self shipping community can be really intimidating and confusing and terrifying !!! but i am here to help!!! i will be your guide!!!

one of my absolute favorite things about self shipping is just how personal it is to each person! nobody's ships or experience with self shipping looks exactly the same. and it's the same way with how we interact and involve ourselves with the community !!!

when i first made this blog, i didn't know how i wanted to do things. i didn't really know anything about promo posts, and i wasn't comfortable with reaching out to people in the community yet, so i kinda eased into it! i started making posts for the community, little imagines and pieces of positivity, and the more i did that, the more i got comfortable with putting myself out there and interacting with other people that were doing the same! and now i just do whatever i want! i post things for the community and i post things for myself, and it works for me!

but some people do it differently!

some people dive head first into things, they make a promo post that details who they are and who they ship with and they tag it with the community tags for people to see and reblog! and that can be nice if you're looking to make new friends because it allows people to learn a little about you before you even talk, and when people know stuff about you it can be easier to open up interactions!

but not everyone is ready to do that, and that's okay! it's okay if you don't make a promo post, it's okay if you don't make posts for the community, it's all okay! you can give as little or as much information as you want, you can interact with other people as little or as much as you want, and you can take your time with it, figuring out what you're comfortable with and what you want to get out of this experience!

and the same goes for how to handle things with the fandom your favorite characters are from! if you don't want to share who your F/Os are, you don't have to! you don't even have to give their name. i know of several people that kept their F/Os anonymous, only using nicknames or emojis when they talked about them, just because that's what they were comfortable with! if you don't wanna do that, you can censor their names just to make sure that they don't accidentally fall into the fandom tags! and worst case scenario, you can always turn off interactions like replies and anonymous asks, just to make sure you don't get any unwanted attention from people that aren't so understanding! everyone in the self ship community has been in your place at one point or another, and we understand!

self shipping is all about what makes you happy. and it's completely up to you to decide what that looks like! you can do anything!

you can have 1 F/O, you can have 500! you can ship with them in individual universes, you can ship with them all at the same time, in one big poly ship! you can rewrite canon, you can make things out of character, you can create AUs... you can draw art, you can write fics, you can come up with headcanons, you can put together moodboards, you can create playlists, and you can share them all if you want to!

this world really is yours to explore, however you see fit! take your time, try out different things, and if you have anymore questions, you know where to find me!!!

!!! An excuse to recommend my favorite fics and authors? Don’t mind if I do! Here’s a top fourteen list of some great fics and a top nine list of my favorite authors, in no particular order! Because I had way too many. (Plus I’m bound to forget a million good ones, so take these with a grain of salt!)

1. chivalry is dead by Uncrowned_King! There really wasn’t another option. After Roman disappears into the Imagination, the other Sides come to look for him, and find several Romans fighting for ownership of the land. My all-time favorite Roman angst, with some beautifully written worldbuilding and my favorite OCs ever and a plot twist that sent me reeling. With some cute DLAMP, too! What’s not to love?

2. Breathe Out by Odaigahara! This is darker than I usually read but so, so worth it! Set pre-canon, Virgil and Janus team up against the other dark sides and find their feelings go beyond platonic after a relationship of convenience becomes something more. It’s a WIP and I don’t know where it’s going yet, but I’m really intrigued and the writing is incredible!

3. The Black Hole Group Chat by Greenninjagal! Definitely my favorite comfort fic. After Logan accidentally joins a group chat and is forced into sticking around, he finds himself making his first friends--but past feelings and present conflicts threaten to tear apart the first place they’ve ever felt comfortable. So good, so funny, makes the most of the texting medium, and I always cry at the end.

4. Monsters of the Subconscious by Quarantinevibes! Ohh, everything by this author is fantastic which goes for all of them. After PoF, Janus visits the Imagination to apologize. Instead, him and Roman are sucked into the Subconscious, a wild land full of mysterious dangers. They must team up to escape, and come to terms with their feelings for each other. Some wonderfully soft Roceit, hilarious comedy and incredible action, and great emotional moments!

5. the feelings in my headspace rearranged by mutemelody! Some canon divergence for the soul. Anxiety doesn’t have a name, and after the AA arc, has to make his way through acceptance and love. Canon turns on its head, old friends make a reappearance, and through it all Anxiety has to find his own identity, nameless or not. Gosh, this fic is incredible--the writing is stunning, the plot is amazing, and it’s some of the best Virgil angst I’ve ever read.

6. There’s a Word For That by plumcat! I cannot recommend this fic enough. Roman, a Slytherin, has been pining over arguing with Patton, a Hufflepuff, since the beginning of time. But with the Quidditch match coming up, his two annoying best friends relentlessly teasing him, and Patton himself spending more and more time with Roman, Roman has to figure out what he really wants and who he wants to be. This fic is hilarious and makes me feel feelings and please, please read it.

7. (i’d never) want once from the cherry tree by ace_corvid! Prinxiety! And a Youtuber AU that really takes advantage of the medium! Virgil and Roman are two of the most popular creators on YouTube and their fans have been begging them to do a crossover episode. The collaboration goes surprisingly well, but it’s one thing to explore a relationship, and another to do it when the whole world is watching. So cute, so hilarious, has some amazing art as well, and I just highly recommend it.

8. double down on the paradigms by remrose! Here’s a lovely college AU! Logan is doing his best to pass his classes, and everything is going fine, despite his roommate Virgil’s concerns about his late study nights and compulsive behavior. Then he meets Patton, and every wall Logan’s constructed slowly begins to crumble. To show how much I love this fic, I have not stopped thinking about it, even though it’s the only one on this list I’ve only read once. It stuck with me that much and hey maybe I should reread it, hold on--

9. In a Tizzy by coconutcluster! Cute fluff, so wholesome, much love. After Logan finds out that Roman gets flustered at compliments, he enlists the other Sides to test this theory. But Roman gets upset when he thinks they’re playing a joke on him by being nice. The writing is great and it’s a fantastic pick-me-up on a bad day! Just so full of nice wonderful feelings!

10. Communication Issues by WaeRose! Analogince! The alternative title that I cut out says it all! After Logan and Virgil find Roman crying in his room, they make an effort to spend more time together as a group. But platonic feelings quickly become non-platonic, misunderstandings abound, insecurities rise, and they’ll have to learn how to communicate their feelings if those feelings could ever lead to a relationship. The writing is incredible, the second-person POV is done expertly, and the characterization is top-notch!

11. a heart he couldn’t control by codevassie! Prinxiety that tore me into a million pieces. Roman traded away his true love’s life to save his brother from a witch, but when he actually meets said true love, he begins to regret his choice. Now Virgil is trapped once again with the witch, Roman is on a rescue mission, Patton and Logan are hiding something, and Janus is definitely not who he seems. Once again, this AU hurts me, and the incredible writing makes it a gut-punch! It’s a WIP but I love where it’s going and need to catch up on it but shhh

12. Another Goddamn Hero Story by rosesisupposes! I’m a sucker for a superhero AU and this one is stellar! Logan and Virgil are a hero team, trying to subdue Patton and Roman, the most famous villain duo in the city. But nobody’s exactly who they say, everyone’s not quite sure which side is right, and past wrongs are coming back to draw new blood. It’s endgame LAMP and the romances are built perfectly! Supervillains Royality is amazing, the action is incredible, and the plot twist blew me away!

13. Hurt, and How We Grow Past It by Jinx72! Another comfort fic of mine, by one of my all-time favorite authors! After Deceit visits the Imagination and lights a fire larger than he intended, Roman is left injured while the other Sides try to put the pieces back together. Old grudges come to light, new bonds are forged, and they all fall in love slowly while all simultaneously being extremely insecure. The characterization is incredible, the writing is top-notch, and the DLAMP is heartfelt and wonderful!

14. Eucatastrophe by arealsword! I added this one last-minute because it’s incredible and deserves to be on this list! The writing is incredible, the world-building is top-notch, and the plot manages to be coherent and incredible while throwing me for a loop every other line! It creeped me the heck out, but I’d expect nothing less from the author of Pick a Side. I’m not even gonna summarize this one because that’d spoil the fun, but suffice it to say, Thomas gets kidnapped by faeries and things get interesting very fast.

And now for the authors! (I chose authors who I didn’t mention above, but all the ones I already talked about are hella good, check them out too!)

1. @/sleeplessinstarbucks. You want good losleep content? Here. You want good QPR content? Here. You want good content in general? Here! Lia has amazing hurt/comfort, beautiful writing, and stellar characterization. I binge their writing every time I get bored. If you want your heart to be warmed, this is where to go!

2. @/theeternalspace. Okay, so Acantha is the Royal of Long Fics. Every one of theirs is a winner! They’re an expert at plotting and characterization, and I’ve been sucked into every one of their many AUs. Plus their writing is godly! And did I mention there are so many chapter fics on their Ao3? If you want a bunch of bingeable emotional rollercoasters, head on over here!

3. @/whenisitenoughtrees. Cat...how. How do you do it. See, Cat writes the best one shots. Their writing is incredible and they’ve written some of my all-time favorite short fics! Their characterization is always on point, and their dialogue always lands, and did I mention their writing is just so deliciously readable--you feel like they chose every word carefully to make it pack as much of a punch as possible. If you want some incredible one shots, this is your writer!

4. @/tulipscomeinallsortsofcolors. I mean, I couldn’t not include Violet. LAOFT is still my favorite series of all time and deserves all the attention it’s got! They’re the expert at well-done short fics that serve a longer narrative, giving everything an almost episodic structure. Plus, their fluff is the fluffiest and the best, and their angst hurts me deep within my soul, so they’re double-powerful! If you want standalone fics or a complex, emotional series, check them out!

5. @/impatentpending. Elena, our writing god, our Deity, which all other writers must respect. Every fic of hers is top-tier, from short to long, and she’s unrivaled at plotting and worldbuilding! You’ll get sucked in to every world and story she creates, and she’s an expert on letting the stories linger. I’m still thinking about Powerless and Monster and it’s been almost a year. If you want expertly crafted stories that leave you in emotional pieces, she’s got them.

6. @/ironwoman359. A classic choice here! She’s got it all--incredible one shots, great characterization, and a big enough master list for basically any ship to be found! She also writes some of the best hurt/comfort in the genre, so if you’re a fan of bad things that lead to good endings, there’s always something to read. If you want a large catalog of fantastic stories, she’s your gal!

7. @/caffeinatedcryptid. You may have seen El’s fantastic art on tumblr, but have you read their incredible stories? If not, you’re missing out! They’ve got several spectacular one shots already written, and each one of them broke me in their own special way. Their writing style is incredible and their characterization is fantastic. If you want longer one shots with well-thought-through plots, head over there!

8. @/astronomical-bagel. Astro, our Lord of Roman Angst, always ready to punch me in the gut with feelings! Act One, Scene Three still hurts me to this day. They’re always ready to turn anything into Roman angst (or any angst, check HDABST) but they’ve got some comfort in there as well! A little bit. Somewhat. Yeah. If you want to be emotionally destroyed, you know who to call.

9. @/green-writes-sanderssides. Green’s fics were some of the first I ever read in this fandom, and they’ve stuck with me to this day! They're an expert at the fluff-angst balance and causing all sorts of Emotions. They’re currently working on an incomplete LAMP fic that just completes me. But I digress. Green is spectacular! They’ve got wonderful canon-verse fics that explore the characters and their relationships expertly. If you want amazing fics with fantastic characterization in-canon, stop by!

And that’s all of them! Again, there are tons more I didn’t get to mention, but these are just a few I love! Congrats if you read all the way to the bottom, I know it was a lot--I just get really excited when I can compliment my favorite writers! Anyway, check them out if you want, I highly encourage it!

HEY, hi. I just read the rant about the eels. I love it! You're right when you say how the fanon twins are quite different from the canon and I have a point about it that kinda of just explains any OOC in any fandom? The big majority of the time when people write them (all of the characters to be honest) they usually write romance so it's kinda like "oh no they wouldn't do that to their s/o right?" so they kinda of need to put them in a OOC state i guess? (i'll continue).

So since we’re venturing past what we get in canon, pretty well anything I say is going to be just my preference or thoughts on the topic at all since we’ll never actually get a confirmed romantic relationship in game to base things off of...So without further ado…

If an author is writing an AU and the characters are OOC, go hard, dude. That’s your world we’re just jumping in, but when the writer is trying to pull the “I’m trying to keep it close to canon” then proceeds to ignore 90% of the characters personality to fit their story, it’s no longer “adhering to canon” so just… be honest with what you want. If you want cute cuddly only murdery to other people eels (or anyone else, this really applies to everyone), just make it an AU and drop the “it’s close to canon” shit all together. (Of course, this is my preference that if the story is taking place in the canon universe, the characters should remain in character as closely as possible)

So my biggest issue with “They wouldn’t do that/would be softer to their S/O” line of reasoning is that, of course they’d act differently….but not so differently that they’re completely different characters. That in itself is problematic enough on it’s own, a person should be able to be their authentic self in a relationship, rather than having to change who they are intrinsically to be able to work romantically with someone. And I understand that writing romance with typically non-romantic characters can be HARD (fuck, my TWST OC is shipped with Floyd so I FEEL you) but that doesn’t excuse ignoring the parts about them you don’t like or find hard to write simply to force your romance. You can still write the in character fluff you want, it just takes more work to try and keep things feeling authentic. Same with writing other people’s characters in general, which is why it’s nice that the translators have made it SO EASY to refer back to the stories so you can try and get a grasp of them.

Plus, relationships in general aren’t centered around a single person, or rather, they shouldn’t be (ever. In any situation, fictional or IRL). Both parties should have their likes/dislikes/hobbies separate from each other and if they cross over, cool, if not, cool! Ships that end up only being about the unit are so fucking strange to me, like, it’s not as if you get into a relationship and immediately go “okay now my personality is null and void I exist solely to please this person”. You’re still allowed to keep your personality when you get into a relationship, so i don’t understand why shipping would be any different in that regard. Like, soulmates AU, childhood friends etc etc I’d hope that both participants have their own hopes, dreams, and life outside of that other person, otherwise it feels really obsessive and unhealthy.

And not to be a complete dick, but the “they’re all villains will ill intentions so writing lovey dovey stuff would be hard to convey” is such a fucking cop out. If everyone is a villain, where do we draw the line for what is actually evil when the goalposts have already been moved so far back so villainy is the new norm? For example (not using Kalim cause we know that boy is sunshine embodied) Ruggie has done villainous things with his part in the magift sabotage in Chapter 2, but then we find in Chapter 4 he brings all the leftover food in the cafeteria home to feed to the people back home.. Not very villainous now is it? So really if anything, the shitty things the characters are doing gets more of a pass than it would in another setting cause the default baseline for morality is “eh, it’s there”.

I’m not a super experienced writer myself, the TWST fandom is the first one I’ve ever really jumped into in this sort of capacity where I’ve made an OC and actually shared it and I’m right there with everyone else wanting fluff with the boys every now and then, but it just takes me so far out of it when you have Jade and Floyd being like OH HONEY SWEETIE I’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU FOREVER AND NEVER LET YOU GO MY SWEET BABY NO ONE WILL EVER HURT YOU cause… love comes in more forms that straight up saying it, and personally I feel like it’s so lazy to just go “ehh fuck if this sounds like something they’d actually do, i like this it’s what i want so imma write it”.(again, if that’s how you want to write it, go hard, but don’t act like it’s not OOC) Cause we HAVE seen how they act with people they care about in how they interact with each other and Azul. Obviously the romance parts aside, you get how they are with people they respect and care for, there’s still the snark, still the sass, and still the occasional casual threat (that isn’t taken seriously), so adding in a cute nickname or some fluff won’t erase the rest of who they are as characters.

I suspect I’ve already gone overboard with this answer, but in general, any sort of ship where a character can’t actually be themselves or half their personality is missing seems so damn flat to me. I find it especially annoying when there's SO MUCH to refer back to while writing (for the most part, rip you guys out there writing pomefiore, ignihyde, and diasomnia stuff still waiting for chapters) and people just…. Don’t or don’t care.

I have 3 (though one is technically a loose self insert shhh) and I want to share their stories and about relations to their loves (one is with Shay & the other Basim) but I cannot never bring myself to take that next step. I can’t draw & I’m much too doubtful to fully write out their stories by chapters. But I really admire what you do, and i guess what I’m getting at is that I appreciate seeing someone enjoy shipping OCs with canon characters again. It warms my heart. As for pointers I can give to you on how to build up the confidence to share your ocs to the world, allow me to report my experience.

I have been writing about OCs ever since I was a tiny lassie of 10, since Star Wars: The Phantom Menace came out in 1999.

Throughout the years, I jumped back and forth between sharing my own OCs (mostly in the form of artworks, because I wasn't confident enough with my writing skills) and just quietly hiding away with them in my burrow, where no one would ever know about them.

But in the long run, I started to feel sad about it and grew restless. Because I wanted so much to share what I had with others, to be able to talk and joke and just discuss about them, but not only about my own, but about others’ as well! 😁😁

I always loved talking about OCs with people, because I just adore seeing the way people create a whole new persona to see some of their dreams realized through them!

It’s something absolutely endearing, to see the passion and the life that literally sparks with people when they share about them.

it’s just something so beautiful, I could spend days listening to them talking about our fictional babies!

But I was scared and afraid that, if I were to share them, people would attack me and tear me down for not making them good enough, too bland, too Mary Sue-ish (and gods, I fucking hate that term, if I could I would fucking ban it, because it's fucking useless and nowadays it’s misused so much, istg).

To be honest with you, sometimes I still have that fear that someone will come and destroy me with their words.

But when this fear gets me, I take a moment to pause, take a deep breath and remember one thing:

I write for the fun of it. I write the story I want to read. I write because all I want is to have fun with the characters and just go down my road, while not bothering anyone in the process.

Whether people like what I do or not, it's on them, not on me. I don’t have power over their thoughts or their actions.

I can only offer what I have to offer and always try to offer my best, and even in that case what I have to give will not be of everyone’s liking, because we are all different and we all have different tastes and interests.

And that’s absolutely fine!

But there is still not much I can do about it!

I cannot change my vision, my creativity, for the sake of an audience, especially in regards to OCs and FanFictions, because it would mean catering to them and not to myself.

And that’s not what fanfictions and OCs are all about, in my most humble opinion.

They are stories to be enjoyed, first and foremost, by us writers, because they are OUR stories.

That’s my mindset most of the time.

If people like what I write, It would truly fill me with joy, and, of course, I'd truly be grateful for it, because validation is always nice to receive, and I would be a hypocrite to say that it isn’t.

It’s human and it’s valid, especially when we share something where we literally pour our soul into.

But that doesn’t have to let you sway from who is the first person that needs to find joy in their characters and story: YOU.

When I post a story on Tumblr or on AO3, I do check the kudos and comments, like anyone.

But if I see that what I write was not received as I thought it would, I don’t lose courage.

I just roll up my sleeves and go on on my own path. Of course, I will always try to improve, try to get better, because as humans and writers and artists, the journey of learning is never-ending. But I do it because I want to become a better artist/writer for myself. I want to become a better version of myself! 😁😁

I also try to stay positive as much as I can. But I also have to admit that I have a net of friends that always helps me get up whenever I fall down and feel drained or insecure, and that surely helped me in the confidence department.

If you need a friend in that regard, someone to share your Ocs with, know that my DMs and Asks are always open! 💗💗

And also, in regard to the fact that one of your OCs is a self-insert: it's absolutely valid, just like any other OCs you have created.

You see, I do believe that, when creating OCs, we do infuse them with a part of our souls (first of all because they are indeed an extension of ourself and second of all because, on a more practical level, it's much easier for us to write about what we know than what it's stranger to us).

So never EVER be ashamed about one of your OCs being a self-insert, because, in my personal opinion, All OCs are to an extent and there is truly nothing wrong with that. (I mean, to make a practical example: my Dottie and Lucia are both introverted bookworms, and I wonder where that particular trait comes from? *points at self* Plus, OF COURSE, I WANT TO IMAGINE A ROMANCE WITH JACOB AND FEDERICO, HELL YEAH! - And no one can take that away from me! LEMME BE AS HAPPY AS A PIG IN THE MUD AND ENJOY THOSE TWO HANDSOME GENTLEMEN!! 💗💗)

So you want to express your creativity, your ideas, your love for the character, and the game through a self-insert? Valid. Absolutely valid.

Through an OC? Valid.

I’d definitely say to go for it.

You are not sure you want to write a full chapter story? Go for one shots with an already established relationship between the oc and the canon character and write small moments between them. Truly do as your heart wishes, because no one can take that away from you.💗💗

I hope I managed to ease your worries, at least a little bit.

001. favorite fic you wrote this year i have a soft spot for take my hand (take my everything) which was the first fic i wrote this year! and kind of the first step back into writing creatively on something new that wasn’t the 7 year monster sterek fic. also my first foray into 9-1-1 fic and was just a lot of fun!

007. longest completed fic you wrote this year the longest fic i wrote was my second for the year! so show me (family) wound up being around 16k+ for 9-1-1 which kind of burst out of me over the course of one 48 hour window unlike take my hand which took a few weeks to crank out.

025. a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read SO MANY FICS DUDE!!! i’m gonna rec a couple, some that i re-read this year and some that i discovered for the first time, all from a variety of fandoms. only a very few people in the world know that the celebrated and reclusive poet jack allen is just kansas mechanic dean winchester, a high school dropout with a few bucks to his name. not that it matters anymore; life has left him so wrung out he never wants to pick up another pen.

until, that is, a string of coincidences leads dean to auditing a poetry course with one dr. castiel novak. the professor is wildly intelligent, devastatingly handsome...and just so happens to be academia’s foremost expert on the poetry of jack allen.

note: i discovered this fic back in the pre-pandemic times of feb 2020 and i’ve read this fic TWICE since, leaving a lengthy comment each time. the poetry in the fic itself is stunningly gorgeous and i have a habit of reading it out loud to myself while reading bc it begs to be heard. this fic is seriously beautiful and makes me want to read all the poet!dean au’s out there in the world. unfortunately there aren’t that many so i just keep coming back to this well. i don’t think i can express enough how much i love this fic.

lost time by ARCurren (105/105 | 350k+ | T) bransonxsybil; AU: canon divergent; outsider POVs; original characters; slow burn

the story of a free spirit who was asked to give up the man she loved for a system she didn’t believe in and what happened next. AU after 3.04.

note: did i think, when i stumbled across this fic years ago, that it would wind up being one of my all time favorites that i return to time and again to re-read? never. did i re-read it for like the dozenth time this year?? 110%. this fic is everything i want from fanfiction—it’s beautifully written, expands on canon, and shows me all the hidden moments the cameras never did (not to mention it’s historically accurate and delves deep into irish politics of the time). the first third or so of this fic is all about tom and sybil’s slow burn romance at downton, but the fic really bursts into its own when we follow the two to dublin and get introduced to all of the author’s deliciously detailed oc’s. heads up warning: this fic was never officially completed, though the final chapter is a beautifully written summary of the final arc of the fic. even so, it’s fucking worth it.

misfire by mothlights & unpossible (6/6 | 28k+ | T) sterek; time travel; angst with a happy ending; alive hale family; magic; alternating POV

“the debt must be repaid,” she says, and it has the weight of a vow. the words resonate through him, ringing through his ribcage and the bones of his jaw, and stiles loses his breath and maybe his grip on reality because she draws herself upright and where there had once stood a supermodel-level MILK now there is galadriel’s much hotter older sister, a presence of unmistakable power in their ordinary, smells-vaguely-of-thai-takeout hallway.

“oh shit,” stiles says.

note: this fic is the first in the misfire ‘verse and i need you to understand that it literally broke me when i binge read these fics a month or so ago. i am a sucker for a solid time travel fic especially bc there are such few good ones in fandom. but this gets at the heart of it all by exploring the idea of stiles getting the chance to save derek’s family and taking it...after he and derek are romantically together in his true timeline and then actually dealing with the ramifications of how that alters everything and how stiles survives in this new present where he and derek are virtual strangers. everyone should definitely read this, but you should also know that i fucking sobbed while reading the sequel (which also has a happy ending, but really digs deep into the nitty gritty angst of the repercussions).

map of the world by seperis (11/11 | 154k+ | M) destiel; end!verse; alternate universe; canon divergent; original characters; slow burn

the world’s already over and they’re already dead. all they’re doing now is marking time until the end.

note: look, if you don’t know about down to agincourt by @seperis, what are you doing with your life?? the series is over 1M+ words so far, the fic author is on book 4 out of a planned 8, and it’s fucking phenomenal. i know i’ve tagged a couple of these recs as slow burn but...this is the slowest slow burn to ever burn. canon!dean travels back into the end!verse timeline just as lucifer kills dean and somehow cas made it out alive and has to keep dean safe while he learns to become his end!verse counterpoint. the world building in this series is intense and i cannot recommend it enough. i’m still in the midst of my re-read bc it’s SUCH an endeavor but i highly recommend it to everybody.

invictus by ellanasan (116/116 | 355+ | M) hayffie; au: alive abernathy family; pre-hunger games; canon prostitution; slow burn

“so then, before i can even think about doing something stupid like trying to stab him with his fucking golden paperknife, he gives me a choice, see?” haymitch continued, almost detached. “either i play nice like all the other victors or he’ll kill my family. i could either become his puppet—greatest punishment he could give me, according to him—or i could become the example.”

note: hello, have you ever wondered what the hunger games series would be like if haymitch’s family were alive? i fucking hadn’t until 2 years ago when i stumbled across this fic and fell head over heels in love with this ship. @ellanainthetardis is my go to hunger games fic writer for anything exploring canon and i’m obsessed with anything she writes about the OG victors pre-canon (finnick, joanna, chaff, etc). this fic is just 300k+ exploring that world and all the intricate details of how cruel the games could really be. HIGHLY recommend. i definitely re-read it this fall when i needed a pick me up.

don’t know what i’m supposed to do (haunted by the ghost of you) by crazyassmurdererwall (1/1 | 30k+ | T) sterek; canon divergent; angst with a happy ending; ghosts; stiles POV

stiles sees dead people. yep. seriously.

(he’s got this. he’s totally got this. so what if one of them is derek’s mom?)

note: did you know that @crazyassmurdererwall is one of my all time favorite people? and that she’s wicked talented? and that in our spare time she’ll send me a billion fic ideas that are amazing and i get to hear all the intricate details of her plot bunnies? but i digress. this fic is one of my all time fave sterek fics i’ve re-read it sooo many times. there’s just something about the heartache and stiles’ insecurity and the way he tries to shoulder it all on his own. and then there’s alli’s brilliant writing, the way she weaves through a scene and paints a picture just so and manages to tug at your heart strings with her precise word choice. there’s some amazing world building in this fic as it explores this other facet of the supernatural that canon teen wolf never touched upon, and i’m so grateful for that bc alli is the only one who should be allowed to write about ghosts and teen wolf together.

lagavulin and guinness by snarfle (10/10 | 163k+ | explicit) hartwin; slow burn; PTSD; suicidal thoughts; graphic depictions of violence; domestic abuse

plenty of people had looked down on eggsy throughout his life. he had gotten fairly used to it. didn’t mean it was fair, but he knew how these things worked. what really sucked was that the new arthur was worse than the old one.

“eggsy grimaced. he didn’t know how to explain to harry—who seemed like he hadn’t been discriminated against a day in his life—that the new arthur kept giving him what amounted to suicide missions, and that he was currently bleeding out in a warehouse because of the deliberately bad intel she had given him.”

also featuring: dean is harder to get rid of than eggsy thought, his mum is going off the deep end, there are way too many nefarious plots in play, and eggsy is really beginning to wish that harry would stop holding his hand and kiss him instead.

note: look, i know i recced this literally less than a week ago but i ALSO stayed up til 5AM re-reading this last night and it was a-m-a-z-i-n-g. i was on a bit of a kingsman kick earlier this year, so i’ve actually re-read this fic TWICE so far in 2020. i will give you a serious warning in that this fic delves deep into domestic abuse through the lens of a variety of different relationships. it also explores the potential for abuse in hartwin, bc this fic is one of the few that actually commits to the fact that they’re literal spies who murder people. actively. a lot. but seriously, this fic is one of my fave in the fandom and i STRONGLY recommend it.

waste of breath by bryrosea (1/1 | 22k+ | M) loganxveronica; canon compliant; missing scenes; navy; past child abuse

logan echolls, the nine years, and the navy.

note: bryrosea has an obscene number of amazing logan and veronica fics (her canon divergent series stay with me is another i re-read this year), but i’ve found myself returning to this fic a lot over the years. i’m a sucker for canon compliant fics that explore the missing scenes in between canon and this fic hits all the right buttons by diving deep into how logan echolls went from being a trash fire at hearst college at the end of s3 to being a decorated navy pilot by the movie. it explores logan seeking out therapy and making a life for himself that he can be proud of, all while pining after the girl who got away. and bc this author is amazing, she followed it up with a sequel from veronica’s point of view in the series done by only me.

the law of equivalent exchange by awed_frog (8/8 | 60k+ | M) destiel; POV castiel; pre-canon; post-canon; canon compliant; immortality; reincarnation

note: i mean??? i don’t really know what to say except that this is one of the truly most beautiful fics i have ever read. it follows castiel through time as he meets different reincarnations of sam and dean across history and falls ever more deeply in love. it is achingly tender and so ecstatically written that i die just thinking about it. and that summary? i mean. holy fuck break my heart why don’t you? i don’t know how i missed out on this fic for so long since it was published in 2015 but i only learned about it for the first time back in july and it was. life changing?? when the fic finally reaches the canon timeline and he meets THIS dean it’s peak yearning. 10/10 will read again.

ahead in the count by elisela (17/17 | 50k+ | E) sterek; AU: sports; pitcher!stiles; teacher!derek; long distance relationship; getting together

“yankee fan,” derek says, laughing when stiles makes a disgusted face. “the bronx bombers, stiles, you can’t be a new yorker and—”

“stop talking right now,” stiles sighs, shaking his head. “i can’t believe i still want to kiss you after that,” he says, pulling derek in by his coat. “this is making me rethink everything.”

“i’ll never watch them again,” derek promises, and stiles laughs against his mouth.

or: stiles is a starting pitcher for the NY mets when he meets and falls in love with derek. derek doesn’t know.

note: i read SO MANY of @elisela’s 911 fics this summer, which i loved, and then she got into teen wolf and started writing sterek and i just about died. this fic is amazing, one of my fave sterek AU’s that i’ve read in years. it’s just the right amount of drama and angst and fluff filled with all the joys of miscommunication and character relationships that makes reading sterek such a joy. reading this fic and finding out eli needed fic recs pushed me to dive back in to reading sterek fics for a bit this fall so i can say with the utmost authority that this is one of the best i’ve read in a long time.

i used to think one day we’d tell the story of us by notequitegucci (2/2 | 32k+ | M) gendrya; alternate universe—modern setting; outsider POV; friends to lovers; friends to lovers

9 times a stark encounters gendry + 1 time he meets the starks.

note: again, this is the first in a 2 part series titled love me like you do that explores arya and gendry’s dynamics together through the point of view of her family. game of thrones ended last year with a whimper but i keep returning to the gendrya tag on ao3 to seek out new, amazing content and also to re-read some old favorites. i can’t remember if i came across this for the first time last year or this one, but i’ve read it and re-read it more times than i can count since and i love it more than i can describe. i’m a total sucker for outsider POV fics and my biggest pet peeve in canon is the fact that none of the stark’s ever found out that arya and gendry had a history together. this modern au fic almost makes up for it by giving me a gendry encounter with every family member and then the big reveal. it’s peak content.

theeeeeeese recs got a little away from me. i wasn’t originally intending on adding lengthy notes to each entry but ... oh well!! these are all amazing so please enjoy.
