No one ever mentions how Gale saw it as a competition. Gale was competing with Peeta. Peeta was learning to live with Gale. Cause he can’t live with Katniss without Gale. And to Gale. Up until the the quarter quell he had the upper hand. Everything they had was fake. Katniss didn’t want it. Peeta won’t better her life like he would. He knows her better. On a different level then Peeta. The things they bond with Peeta can’t. Their dads dying, Seam life, making ends meet, the struggle of raising children from a young age, not having choices. That’s something that Peeta doesn’t get. But what he don’t get is Katniss isn’t catnip no more. She has different problems. Different struggles he don’t get. That Peeta does. The nightmares, the horrors, the death of rue. Peeta wasn’t there but he gets it. The struggle to keep yourself moving. A whole other type of survival. And Peeta didn’t think about that stuff. He didn’t compare that stuff when Gale got whipped. When Gale got whipped he stood up cause that was Katniss’s best friend. Shit it could’ve been her lover. But he still did it. Because he never second guess when he was with her. When it came to her. He never put himself first. And that almost led to their destruction.

"gale didn't kill prim" yeah but that's not the POINT. katniss knows that. it's not a case of misplaced blame where she just needs time to get over it and see gale's innocence. the thing is, gale's bomb design WAS inherently cruel, counting on human kindness and abusing it. katniss has disagreed with it from the beginning. it doesn't matter that gale didn't actively choose to kill prim, he still designed a weapon that would make people like prim, caring and compassionate, die. katniss has felt the gutting agony of losing her loving sister, and she can imagine what the families of other nurses and healthcare providers would feel when they lost their loved ones. her logical disagreement from earlier is now palatable and she knows first hand the horrors it can cause, she just can't forgive that, it's not a kind of violent thinking she wants to live around. prim dying was just an aggravator of what katniss already felt and made it impossible to ignore, and implying katniss is just lashing out in anger at gale because of her own grief is condescending as hell, removing all the blame from him and all the cognizance from her.

Coriolanus (in fanfics): Is the hinge—or at least a participant—in an utterly heart-wrenching polycule.
Katniss (in canon): Is at the point of a VERY uncomfortable love triangle—whether you break Everlark OR Everthorne, tbf.
✨These characters and situations are not the same ☺️✨

The difference between Katniss and Gale is that Katniss will fight with everything inside her to protect her loved ones and Gale will fight with everything inside him to create a better world for his loved ones.
Katniss is just Gale a little to the left. Gale is just Katniss a little to the left. They have the same love and the same goals that come from love; only they have different ideas on how best to help the ones they love.
Do you do everything you can to protect your loved ones within this oppressive system designed to destroy them, or do you try to dismantle that system so your loved ones don't need your protection anymore? That's the difference between Katniss and Gale. That's it.

Can we please talk about the fact that Gale ALWAYS had Katniss’s back?? It’s always one of the biggest reasons why I will always love their relationship . It didn’t matter if they were mad at each other/disagreed, if Katniss needed someone for support/help/advice, etc, he was there for her as soon as he could be. And also, they always listened to each other, they just didn’t always necessarily agree. And that’s actually shows a really strong friendship, as they didn’t just tell the other what they want to hear!

Does anyone else ever notice how Gale is sometimes depicted in Hunger Games stories as an abusive jerk to Katniss or a controlling manipulative bastard(get real people, like she would let him) OR a jealous prick who sets out intentionally to sabotage her relationship with Peeta? Just to name a few.
Why? To justify Everlark. (Luckily lots of Everlark stories don’t actually do this but I still see it and it’s irritating hence this rant)
Gale is actually written OOC a lot just so people can claim that Katniss belongs with Peeta who is apparently so perfect. And I hate it. That’s right up there with (likely) these same people who completely ignore the fact that Peeta manipulated Katniss into a relationship with him prior to the 74th Games during the interviews. (As I said in an earlier post too, the fact that Peeta kept pressuring her after the rebellion to have kids until she gave in just… that bothers me. But I digress.)
Yes, his feelings were probably genuine and yes, Haymitch also played a role in this but it was honestly a d*ck move for him to pull especially since neither of them told her this is what was gonna happen. So she faked it through the 74th Games. And Snow made her continue after while forcing Gale into the role of her cousin instead, something that neither Gale or Katniss liked, as it made them uncomfortable.
I feel that she was with Peeta at the end because she needed hope and he was almost like another Prim for her. Someone she needed to protect. But what happens once she feels like she can stand on her own again? And don’t even get me started on how wildly Gale’s characterization veers into left field upon arrival at District 13. That whole bit made little to no sense to me. Then there’s the end where Collins writes him off by “he goes to District 2 and no one sees him again”. Really.
Everyone in Twelve also probably believed that Everthorne was endgame as the two were seen constantly together and obviously cared about the other and their families very much. Until the reaping happened. As I said before, Katniss’s true love is her sister Prim but Peeta ultimately was Snow’s choice for her. Katniss’s choice was Gale and she even said so in Catching Fire. “Gale is mine and I am his. Anything else is unthinkable”.
So I hate that Suzanne Collins ultimately didn’t have the guts to follow through with that.

I feel like the Mockingjay epilogue is more depressing than any other part of the series.
Specifically the fact that Katniss never refers to her children by their names. She only say that they are "the boy and the girl". Because that's what they are to her. A boy and a girl. That's what she sees them as. Not her kids.
We all know Katniss likes to have someone to take care of and I think that that's what her kids are to her. She didn't bring them to this world because she wanted kids, she did that because she wanted someone to take care of and because Peeta forced her to (which is canon, but y'all aren't ready for that conversation)
She cares about them, but that's just because of her nature and kin selection. She loves them, but she doesn't like them (yes, I stole this from Ladybrid, fuck off 🫶🏻)

I'm a big proponent of the fact that gale is not some jealous bitch who hates peeta and occupies his time trying to force his affections on katniss, but if it ever did come down to a wedding between katniss and peeta, I think gale'd strangle peeta on sight. hands down no holds barred.

If one more person says that ‘if you’re team Jeremiah then you were team Gale’ then I am going to riot because I take that as a personal offence.
Gale Hawthorne isn’t even in the same league as Peeta Mellark. But let me remind y’all that Peeta still got jealous of Gale. Peeta is the closest thing to perfect that a love interest has ever been and he still had flaws. He didn’t talk to Katniss for months after the games when he found out she was faking her feelings. Because he was hurt. And KATNISS LITERALLY DID IT TO SAVE THEIR LIVES! But he was still hurt by it because he was a teenage boy who fancied this girl who didn’t fancy him back. It took Haymitch basically telling him to get his head out of his ass for him to forgive Katniss.
Belly didn’t have the same excuse. She just toyed with Jeremiah and then snogged his brother. He had every right to be pissed. And he stood back and let them be together, even though it hurt him. Did he also make mistakes? Yes. But Belly didn’t even properly apologise at the time. As soon as she sincerely apologised, he forgave her. Jeremiah is a good fucking person and I’m sick of the bullshit about him. You do not have to hate Jeremiah to be a fan of Conrad, and vice versa. BUT I SIMPLY WILL NOT STAND ACCUSED OF BEING AN EVERTHORNE FAN. THAT IS TOO MUCH AND YALL HAVE CROSSED A LINE. EVERLARK FOR LIFE.

Considering how much they like to place Peeta on this pedestal of perpetually perfect purity, I've noticed his fanbase goes out if it's way to be hostile. Whether it's offering a single nice word about Gale on a message board or even a Gale/Katniss dedicated video, Team Peeta always invades with their overblown disparaging comments. This would make more sense if it was the other way around, but how is it Team Gale usually opts not to engage or attack? Shouldn't Team Peeta be satisfied with their delectable forcefed 'victory'? What's with the consistent need to tear Gale down in order to prop Peeta up? The guys themselves did not interact with nearly such immature antagonism towards each other.
Is this perhaps overcompensation for the fact that people like Peeta are free to bake cookies and pick posies in the meadow because people like Gale are diligently safeguarding a whole new world?

"What about the other families, Katniss? The ones who can't run away? Don't you see? It can't be about just saving us anymore. Not if the rebellion's begun!” Gale shakes his head, not hiding his disgust with me. “You could do so much.” He throws Cinna's gloves at my feet. “I changed my mind. I don't want anything they made in the Capitol.” And he's gone.
Gale was honestly so based for this.
