Can you recommend fanfiction that you personally really like?
Yes! Love this ask. I’ve never made a Zutara fic rec list partially because I’ve read so many wonderful stories over time that I find the prospect daunting!
But there are absolutely certain stories that I have a personal soft spot for, that I return to again and again. And that’s my criteria for what’s included below. This is a sampling of fics that I find myself coming back to, in no particular order. I may come back and add more, because this list is so far from exhaustive. A mix of ratings (marked), so keep that in mind.
Wish I Was the Moon by Like a Dove (T), post-canon: There’s so much that I love about the way this one-shot explores Katara’s character and what she faces post-canon, how she frees herself, strikes out in the world and finds her way home. Her feelings for Zuko, and her inner-conflict around them, are rendered tangibly, both through scene and subtext. A really good example of how an author can show a character’s lack of/journey to self-knowledge without breaking voice.
Refraction by caroes3725 (E), post-canon: When I started reading Zutara fanfic (for me this was in 2020), this was the fic I was looking for—a deep, realistic-to-canon, in-character exploration of how Zutara could unfold after the events of ATLA in a way that gives Katara in particular the arc she deserves. Really well-done development of the Fire Nation court world, well-developed characters, shining dialogue. An amazingly well-worth-it slow burn.
Wildfire by rainstormdragon (E), post-canon: To me this story is kind of a steamy Zutara thesis. The characters are so spot on and alive, their flaws are on full display in a way that feels realistic, and their chemistry is powered by their compatibility—matched in passion and stubbornness, and also in what they want from life. And I think it really gets Aang, too, which is something that can be hard to find in ZK fic. Also really hot, but that's only part of what makes it really shine.
Partners in Learning by evergreenonthehorizon (T), Modern AU: One of the things I love in modern AUs is watching an author weave that invisible string between these characters. Sometimes, it’s by writing narrative arcs that parallel the series, and sometimes it’s by drawing out the personality traits that make the characters both lovable to readers and such a compelling match and watching that spark bloom into flame. This beautifully written story does that so, so well in a really compelling Modern AU setting. Zuko and Katara here are so wonderfully lovable, and it’s a joy to watch them fall for one another, too.
Journeys by Smediterranea (E), Modern AU: In real life, I want to see my friends in relationships with people who can recognize why they’re so particularly amazing. That potential, I think, part of the appeal of ZK as a ship, and that’s part of the special magic of this fic. Watching these two characters get to know one another—really see one another—and fall in love deliciously sweeps the reader up. Plus, really fun, in character cameos from the rest of the Gaang along the way.
Spark, set fire by marijayne (T), Modern AU: literary fanfic, and I mean that in the best way. This story is beautiful and bittersweet, the latter is not often something I seek out in fanfic (where I hide from life), but here it’s gorgeous and worth it. The world building here is really cool—allows the author to explore some of a set of cultural issues/interactions that both echo the ATLA world and ours. The characters are so tenderly drawn (dadko especially)—and the connection between them builds beautifully and tangibly—and the longing is…chef’s kiss.
Wrong when it's right by nire (T), Book 1 Canon Divergence: Before I read this, I couldn't imagine wanting to read a Book 1 Zutara. After, I wanted more. Bickering, bed-roll sharing, shared heat, tenderness and common ground. A delight from start to finish.
Anyway, thanks for asking and happy reading! <3 And if you want more recs, let me know.

Favorite Zutara fics?
It varies. There are also a ton of great fics and it's hard to winnow down. What I'd like to do instead is to give my top 5 underrated fic recs. These fics have under 10 k hits, and I think they deserve a TON more love.
The Art of Holding on and Letting Go by evergreenonthehorizon
One of the best "Aang makes good choices" fics I've ever read.
(Don’t) Follow Me Down by eleventy7
A retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth with Katara as the queen of the underworld and Zuko as the god of the spring. Beautiful prose.
Heartsong by we-were-angels (untilwefallinlove)
Katara as a sea siren and Zuko as the pirate who loves her. The ending leaves me wanting a sequel. Maybe the author will give me us one if we're REALLY good?
A Drop in the Desert by damagectrl
A Zutara fic with lots of The Mummy vibes. Also, this author in general is fantastic and if you don't know them, you should read all of their works! Dancing in the Dark was the first work of theirs I ever read and it is to this day one of the best Zutara falls in love in Ba Sing Se stories i've ever read.
I Think You're My Sole-mate by cablesscutie
Adorable one shot I wish had a follow up. I love a good Zutara meet-cute

@nyctoqueen and anyone else looking for a few Ambassador Katara/ Fire Lord Zuko Zutura fics:
All Good Things Start with Tea - yodalorian (G)
Zuko's advisors want him to get married. Fortunately, they've found the perfect candidate.
A Month of Sundays - ok_boomerang (T)
Fire Lord Zuko is desperately trying, and continuously failing, to successfully propose to Ambassador Katara. She's oblivious; everyone else is entertained. Meanwhile, Zuko is giving weekly Sunday speeches to the Fire Nation in an effort to help his people feel closer to their government.
This effort was not supposed to include telling the entire Fire Nation about his plans for a future with Katara before even she knew about them. But it's fine! They promised not to tell!
Covered in You - evergreenonthehorizon (M)
Zuko can’t keep a Southern Water Tribe ambassador to save his life. Ten years post-war and he’s gone through eight of them. They all keep leaving to get married and start families. The Fire Lord is getting desperate.
The Solace of the Night - goldilocks23 (E)
The Southern Water Tribe Ambassador's diplomatic Fire Nation visits coincidentally coincide with sightings of the Painted Lady and the Blue Spirit.

Pray give me thy fluffiest Zutara fics for a weary soul
i'm not entirely sure if you're asking for fics i wrote, or just fluffy fics i love in general, but i'll just give you both since i don't have that many published zk fics up at the moment!
my fics:
serendipity: a purely indulgent modern au about yoga student! zuko and yoga teacher! katara. there's some angst towards the end but it all ends happily and it's really just a shameless pile of fluff. this was also my first ever zk fic so i have a special place in my heart for it <3
the threads of home: written in response to all the "katara would lose her culture if she got with zuko!" antis, where katara grapples with how to blend traditions. the beginning is more a discussion of culture and home, but the ending is pure zk fluff.
my favourites:
my lord, this reminds me of when we were young by akaiiko: this is the cutest old! zk fic i've ever read and i adore it.
please (don't) meet me under the mistletoe by akaiiko: modern au! zuko meets katara while hiding from his ex girlfriend at a christmas party. one of my go to zk fluff fics!
a warm embrace by ewinkie: post TSR, zuko and katara can only fall asleep in each other's arms so they start sleeping in the same bed platonically, except the feelings they're having aren't quite so platonic. super duper cute.
sunshowers by taliax: following the final agni kai, katara finds a somewhat delirious zuko talking to the turtleducks about her. yes, it's just as sweet as you'd expect.
partners in learning by @evergreenonthehorizon: modern au with single parent! zuko and teacher! katara. there is some angst and minor character death, but overall it's just delightfully fluffy and soft.
i don't speak meow language by boogum: katara is turned into a cat, and zuko adopts her. i know it sounds whack but i promise you won't regret it if you give it a chance. featuring grumpy katara, soft zuko, and many forbidden feelings ;)
half past closing by damagectrl: modern teashop au with college student katara and tea shop worker zuko. need i say more?
your body made of matches by burnshoney: soft married zk on the morning after their wedding!
just improvise by boogum: when the gaang is found out at the ember island marketplace, they must pretend to be the ember island players. too bad the crowd is made up of zutara shippers who demand a re enactment of the crystal catacombs scene. what can zuko and katara do but comply?
awkward by @soopersara: before the comet, zuko tries to cheer katara up by showing her his baby pictures. classic awkward turtleduck zuko, super sweet and cute!
stone carvings by likesummerrainn: zuko plans a proposal but it doesn't quite go the way he expects.
always the bridesmaid by bluenebulae: zuko is katara's blind date to sukka's wedding! very soft and wholesome :)
i hope you enjoy these anon!

Whichever kiss prompt you want to do most for Zutara! 💜
Hello dear! Thanks so much for the prompt! Oooh another writer’s choice for the prompt! The possibilities! I picked this one because it reminded me of the first fic I ever wrote (which is on hold indefinitely and not shared anywhere), but this fits with my idea of how Zutara got together in that au.
6. Wild, breathless kisses brought on by a heartfelt gift.
“Hey,” Zuko said quietly at her ear, “Do you think we can sneak out of here? I uh, have another gift for you, but it’s in my office.”
Katara quirked her brow at him before appraising the state of their friends. Sokka and Suki were in a heated argument with Toph about...something, and Aang was nodding off. Their little “after party” for her birthday party was clearly winding down, so Katara nodded. She followed Zuko out of the sitting room, silently padding down the hallway till they turned the corner.
“I’m only coming because I’m curious, but you already got me a wonderful gift,” Katara said, raising her hand to brush against the Fire Lily hair pin. Zuko shrugged as he held open his office door for her.
“I know, but I found this and I just... well, you’ll see.” He closed the door and quickly crossed the room to his desk, rummaging in his drawer before pulling out a long, thin box. Katara’s eyes widened, sizing up the gift as she slowly stepped forward to take it from his hands. She quickly removed the blue wrapping paper, tugging open the box.
“Well, I think it’s very sweet and totally unnecessary for you to get me two gifts, but...” Katara trailed off as she lifted the scroll from the box. Unwinding carefully, she gasped as her eyes trailed over the familiar forms. “Is this...?”
“Yeah.” Zuko rubbed the back of his neck, a blush dusting his cheek. “Sokka told me you gave the scroll you stole from those pirates to a giant owl to get access to a library? And the last time I was visiting Uncle, we were at the market, and a guy was talking about these bending scrolls he had, and I’m sure it’s not the same forms. But I figured at the very least it should be in the hands of a Master Waterbender, not some merchant in the middle ring.”
Katara stared dumbly at him as he rambled, her heart racing.
“The guy said it was Southern style. I mean, I’m not sure, your bending is such a unique blend with Northern style, but I figured-”
“It is Southern,” Katara choked out. “The forms, they are Southern style.”
“Oh,” Zuko blinked. “Well.... good.”
“Zuko I... I can’t thank you enough. For giving me a piece of my heritage. I- Thank you,” Katara whispered. She carefully laid the scroll on the desk, then came around the side to throw her arms around Zuko. He caught her, like he always did, not stumbling as she hugged him. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” he whispered back. Katara shivered, leaning back just enough to meet his eyes. Any other thoughts she had faded as she lost herself in his honey-golden gaze. Before her brain fully realized what she was doing, Katara leaned up and kissed Zuko, capturing his lips in a deep kiss. He was only still against her for a moment before his arms were wrapping around her, drawing her flush to him. One of Katara’s hands wound in his hair, the other clutching at his shoulder. It was the wildest kiss Katara had ever experienced, unbridled and overflowing with passion and eight years of repressed feelings.
When she finally pulled back they were both gasping for air. Zuko rested his forehead on hers, keeping his hands around her waist. Katara bit her lip, finally raising her head and meeting his gaze.
“I uhm, I don’t usually kiss people just because they give me gifts,” Katara began. “Even very thoughtful, wonderful gifts. I just-”
“I know. Me too,” Zuko said.
“Its you. Its- its always been you,” she pressed on. A hesitant smile tugged at Zuko’s lips.
“I know. Me too,” Zuko repeated.
“So... what now?” Katara asked, suddenly remembering their status as Fire Lord and Ambassador. Zuko smoothed a strand of hair behind her ear.
“Whatever you want. I’m yours.”
Katara beamed up at him. It probably wouldn’t be easy, or simple, but it would be worth it.
Zuko was worth it.
Send me a kiss prompt and a pairing!

What ifs...
I have read so much beautiful, nuanced, wholesome, thrilling #zutara fanfiction that in my mind Zuko and Katara always fall for each other like pieces of a puzzle. It's natural and inevitable conclusion of their journeys and story arcs. I feel we're very lucky that we didn't get an original zutara ending though. At this point I feel I would only watch a zutara ending if @hayleynwong was directing and at least emicha, marked mage, cablesscutie, sadladybug, soopersara, evergreenonthehorizon, zukoscomet, and jasminetealatte were in the writer's room.

5. Stitch, Ever, and Nanu
Oh lordy okay
5. go on a six hour road trip with (no car radio, you choose who drives), sit next to on a six hour plane flight, sit across from on a six hour train journey
Go on a six hour road trip with - @stitch1830. We’ve spent the day in the car already so this would be fine. Also. We probably shouldn’t be around many other people in a cramped space for 6 hours together. For logistical reasons stitchie will need to drive, and i know this says no car radio but it didn’t say anything about any other music system so fuck you we’re jamming to The Playlists
Sit next to on a six hour plane flight - @nanunanu22. I think we would both be good at minding our own business and I really don’t need to be full of energy on a plane
Sit across from on a six hour train journey - You because stay away. Jk idk how to explain but you + me = train vibes. I genuinely love train rides too, would be a good time.
Send me a fmk-alternative ask, or anything else

Hi! 💕 just a little something I plan on posting here soon, following a very certain fic I’ve written before. 😊
Everyone stared dumbfounded at the admiral. The audacity. Katara is just as taken aback, his comment crossing the line and yet she finds she doesn’t dislike it all that much. She cannot allow him to get away with this in front of the others, she must stay composed. “Need I remind you of your place?”
Kaine doesn’t bother to hide his grin. “My apologies, Master Katara. I was merely observing out loud.”
Does he think little of her? “I suggest you refrain from verbally announcing such things and keep your observations about me private next time.”
His grin only widens, sly and unfazed. If only she could knock that smirk from his face because it’s all too familiar and she’s thankful she’s sitting because her knees are weak and are starting to shake. “As you wish.”
