BSD: An Absurdist Analysis - Chapter 4
Shinsoukoku's first encounter
[Masterpost]
We begin in the middle of Atsushi’s first encounter with Akutagawa, and Higuchi starts shooting at Atsushi and Tanizaki, but Naomi shields her brother.
Tumblr media
Now I didn’t really talk about the Tanizaki siblings in the last post partially because I was focused on Akutagawa’s introduction and partially because they’re fucking weird and I try not to think about them too often. That being said, they’re relevant now so I guess I gotta talk about these two people who I hope are not genuinely siblings and just have an incest fetish — which I will specify is still not great, but at least its better than them literally being siblings!
Anyway, I mention the incest thing because… well, it’s absurd. Everyone who is not the two in question is made pretty uncomfortable by it, and even though its played for comedy most of the time, for both Naomi and Tanizaki, their affection for one another spurs them to take action in an absurdist way.
Naomi, despite not being the ability user of the pair, takes the bullets. Although we know as people who have read BSD that she does this likely knowing that Yosano will be able to heal her, there’s no guarantee of that, and a first-time reader definitely wouldn’t know that. To the reader and even to Akutagawa and Higuchi, Naomi stepped in during a seemingly hopeless situation, even though her actions were likely to only temporarily help.
Luckily, Tanizaki uses his ability against Higuchi until Akutagawa steps in and easily takes him down.
Then, we’re left with Akutagawa and Atsushi alone (after Akutagawa slaps Higuchi across the face… not one of his better moments).
For all intents and purposes, Atsushi should have no chance right now. He doesn’t really know how to use his ability, Tanizaki and Naomi are both down and Akutagawa is set up as this ruthless, dangerous, and basically unstoppable force.
Akutagawa begins the interaction by claiming that Atsushi just hurts everyone around him, sending the latter into an anxious spiral until Tanizaki tries to tell him to run, alerting him to the fact that he and Naomi are still alive and cementing his determination.
Tumblr media
At this point in the story, Atsushi only lives for other people, not himself, and this will be his driving force for a while, though his experiences will eventually begin to undo that mentality. It is after this that he decides to fight back against Akutagawa, despite the odds.
Akutagawa even kind of calls him out on his absurdist behavior, having full knowledge of his own reputation and skills and the apparent likelihood that he would succeed over Atsushi. “Dying for justice…? How cliché,” he says disdainfully.
Tumblr media
Atsushi steals his gun and then tries to fire at Akutagawa, but then he reveals that Rashoumon can protect him from bullets and dismembers Atsushi’s leg. Once again, we’re put in a position where it feels pretty much impossible for Atsushi to win, and he is launched into a flashback from his time at the orphanage. He reflects on the fact that he’s been spurned since birth, but even so he continues to fight back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, despite being terrified of his own ability and its potential to hurt other people, Atsushi makes use of it in this moment in order to rebel.
And that’s what absurdity is all about, the act of revolt against what is unfair in life. Atsushi having to face Akutagawa as an opponent right now is wild, for all the reasons I stated earlier, but because Atsushi refuses to give in and accept his own death (even if its because he wants to protect other people rather than himself), he is able to protect himself long enough for Tanizaki and Dazai to stop the fight, and he survives.
Dazai reveals that his absurdly forward flirtatious behavior from the prior chapter actually enabled him to plant a bug on Higuchi, implying that she suspected her from the very beginning. Higuchi argues that the Port Mafia will decimate the Armed Detective Agency if they don’t hand over Atsushi, emphasizing how large the mafia is and how much control they’ve got. I’ll I will say about this for now is that basically this won’t happen because the agency continues to survive and succeed through the power of absurdism, basically.
Oh, also? Dazai is revealed to be a defected member of the Port Mafia! But I’ve already talked about his defection and Oda, so I don’t feel the need to reiterate all of that, I just wanted to note that this is when this fact is revealed, and it’s revealed by Akutagawa. I will talk more about Akutagawa’s obsession with Dazai when it becomes more directly relevant.
That’s the conclusion of this chapter! I do want to mention that going forward Atsushi and Akutagawa’s relationship is going to become increasingly important because they’re essentially the conflict of an absurdist versus a nihilist, and we certainly see the foundations of it in these first few chapters.

Hi.... If you don't mind, can I ask your top 5 (or top 3) favorite characters from Bungou Stray Dogs? And why you loved them? And your top 5 favorite moments from the series? Sorry if you've answered this before.....
No need to apologise, I’m happy to answer! :D
Lets see, fave characters, it’s so hard to narrow it down to just five because I love most of the BSD characters
Surprise to no one, Chuuya. I love my scrunkly boy. For as little as he appears in the main story he steals every scene he’s in, his light novels have so much character to explore. His backstory is wild. There’s so much for me to sink my teeth into in terms of character and so little there’s a lot of room to theorise. He has a fun personality to attempt to write as well. I have a lot of Chuuya posts so I won’t rant too much about him here.
Kunikida was definitely my first favourite character. Strict but caring, follows the rules but they are his own rules, reluctant mentor figure, thrown into a high position at such a young age, really smart but such a dumbass. Dazai’s character in season 1 wouldn’t nearly be so enjoyable if he didn’t have Kunikida to reign him in. I love his dynamic with Atsushi, he doesn’t want to be a mentor, but he doesn’t want this kid to get hurt. So he tries to land somewhere in the middle. He tries to get Atsushi to arrive at the right conclusion himself, he wants him to grow on his own, but will be there for him when he needs it.
Yosano, BSD needs more Yosano content. Again, I loved her dynamic with Atsushi during the train heist. Her and Kaiji’s conflict of beliefs about the value of human life and death was so interesting. Her past with Mori was definitely interesting too, but I am much more interested in seeing more of the present day Yosano. I don’t want her to be forced out into the field, because that’s something she doesn’t want, but I would love to just know more about her role in the agency. Her day to day. More of her beliefs. More exploration of how her trauma affected her ability to heal people. Is she even a real qualified doctor?? Did she actually go to med school??? Because some part of me wouldn't be surprised she didn’t, given her history.
Akutagawa siblings. I’m putting them as one because a lot of what makes Akutagawa interesting to me is his relationship with Gin. I love main timeline Akutagawa and all his complexities but Beast!Aku is golden. I love the Beast movie so much that when I picture Akutagawa I picture the actor, not the cartoon man, haha. They are both little creatures to me, I wish their dynamic was more explored. I wish Gin was explored more in general, pretty sure we see them the least out of all of Black Lizard.
Dazai. Here’s the thing, originally, I wasn’t much of a Dazai fan. I didn’t not like him, but he wasn’t my favourite. BUT then I started reading the real Dazai Osamu’s works and I love his writing. Rewatching BSD and starting the manga, after I had read some of Dazai Osamu’s works, gave me a better appreciation for the BSD character. NLH, Setting Sun, Flowers of Buffoonery and Dazai Osamu’s fairytale retellings, all very much affect how I view Dazai and how I write his character. I have a very love/hate relationship with writing him though because I’m constantly questioning whether or not he would do X actions, but then I remember the characters in the books would, so I write it in anyways, haha.
Honourable mentions: Aya, Kenji, Kyouka, Atsushi, Bram, all of The Flags, Lucy (Okay I’m going to stop before I list them all)
Favourite moments:
It’s got to be Chuuya fighting a literal dragon, right? I’ve rewatched Dead Apple a lot, I never tire of Chuuya throwing a building down a dragon’s throat. And of course Chuuya screaming Dazai’s name in the midst of corruption. Not even in a shippy way, but in the context of Dazai should be dead, as far as anyone else knows he’s dead, but Chuuya believes in his ability to survive. He believes even when it’s supposed to be impossible, if he uses corruption, Dazai will be there to stop it. And if he’s wrong, he accepts dying alongside him. That’s about as ride or die as it gets and I love it.
Atsushi jumps to save Kyouka. He has no reason to, other than despite all he’s been through, he still believes people deserve to live, they deserve to be told that. Kyouka was willing to die to stop hurting people, to pay penance for an ability she had no control over and Atsushi was willing to die trying to save her. I don’t care what people say, Atsushi is a good main character, I don’t care that he cries a lot or that he needs saving and losses fights. I care about how much he cares. I care that he sees good in people like Kyouka and Dazai, he sees the good in Lucy. Moments like this make me love BSD.
Similar vein, Lucy frees Atsushi. Helping Atsushi is a lose/lose scenario in Lucy’s perspective. The guild is all she has, the only place that has ever given her some value. Atsushi is the man that robbed her of that value. But in this confrontation she learns Atsushi is a lot like her, that in this one conversation he has attempted to understand her pain better than anyone else in the guild and so she takes a chance on Atsushi. She chooses to help him and Yokohama despite knowing it will cost her everything she has. And she does it with a smile on her face like it’s nothing. Love Lucy so much.
Ranpo can’t ride public transport by himself. This one is a little silly, but you see I am a neurodivergent adult who also really struggles with public transport. Trains scare the heck out of me, so I don’t go on them alone. Ranpo is just like me for real and it gave me a silly little serotonin to see it.
Okay, I tried not doing two Chuuya scenes but Chuuya showing up to save the agency in a helicopter and throwing bullets at the Hunting Dogs is also one of my faves. Especially as he was sent there to save them and then Kunikida goes and jumps out the thing and blows himself up anyway, it’s just funny. BSD does a good job of balancing action and humour and serious moments very well. This is supposed to be an epic sacrifice for Kunikida, his friends all think he’s dead. But looking at it from Chuuya’s perspective is funny. People say “Oh, why didn’t Chuuya do anything” like Kunikida really gave him a chance to. Maybe he did have a plan and maybe he didn’t get a chance to do anything because Tall, Blond and Explody over there leapt out the door.

my notes on bungo stray dogs season 4
alright now that i've finally watched s4, i can be insane about this show for a bit. spoilers abound below obviously, and also i only watch the show and don't follow the manga (not something i intend to change anytime soon, so pls don't spoil haha <3)
my thoughts
crazy how reading meta on the character and relationship foils in BSD actually significantly improved my media literacy, not to mention increased my respect for asagiri a lot. but speaking of foils i went insane watching this season. the way it BUILDS on so much of the previous seasons is wild
everything about mushitari and yokomizo's relationship is SOOOOO much and we barely know them. the theme of trying to be remembered forever through your writing. the foils to the murakami arc, the way ango is dazai's translator despite their own strained relationship, do i even need to explain how it parallels poe and ranpo's relationship.
not to mention the way the manuscript / evidence destroyer arc is constructed reminds me a lot of how they foiled dazai x chuuya with steinbeck x lovecraft in the double black episode.
speaking of which, ranpo fans (and ranpo/poe fans) really had their time this season! yes i'm getting queerbaited no i don't care i love this this is awesome. i havent been queerbaited like this since i watched double black and it permanently rewired my brain (affectionate)
the book as metacommentary on storytelling and what it means to construct and alter reality and the evils of trying to play God as written by a real-life writer, an inherent role of playing God. im shaking asagiri like a ragdoll for answers
unsure how i feel about the continuous upping of stakes but do respect the overall lack of power creep for our main characters. dazai, yosano etc are exactly as powerful as they were when they first started, and i enjoy that.
the obvious contrast in ranpo as silly emotionally volatile 14-year-old vs grown-up ranpo in present time and how he's developed so much as a character and grown to care for others. the relationship between him and fukuzawa. im going to be sick. i need him to be safe and protected so bad...i just want him to be happy.
the empathetic and thoughtful way BSD approaches the treatment of children really gets to me. the attempt to preserve innocence and the way it is so often destroyed. but also it's worrying how with each flashback going further back in time, the characters depicted are progressively younger - dazai at 18 -> dazai and chuuya at 15 -> ranpo at 14 -> yosano at 11. if we continue in this direction, i think we will probably see akutagawa's childhood and him joining the PM, which i can't imagine will exactly be a happy fun time.
speaking of which, the contrast in this season between the patience and compassion with which fukuzawa treats teenage ranpo vs the cruelty with which mori treats child yosano and then the fact fukuzawa and mori's friendship ended over that treatment. oh my goddd. and i'm sure there will be further examination of the trickledown-effect of how mori's teachings impacted dazai which then impacted akutagawa which then impacted kyouka. the intergenerational trauma of it all
-> the parallel between mori shooting yosano's friend to force her to heal him with her ability vs dazai shooting akutagawa to force him to protect himself with his ability. oh my god!!!!
on the decay of the angels: really confused by how nikolai's character ties in to the real-life gogol (who i don't know super well, but i've read a few of his stories and like his writing). waiting for a mishima character to show up, since well, the decay of the angel is a real-life mishima book. excited for that since real-life mishima was also....quite a character, to say the least
my questions (and further thoughts)
so far, the state of several ADA members remain unknown. we currently only know the whereabouts of dazai, atsushi, kyouka, and fukuzawa, and that's because uh, 2/4 are in prison.
(also the parallel of fukuchi helping fukuzawa find oda in prison vs fukuchi's conversation with fukuzawa in prison. hm.)
speaking of which — i'm curious where mersault really is. it's obviously not a normal prison — there's most likely at least one ability user at work in making it function. (plus i need an albert camus character so bad PLEASE.) the way it's depicted, with the yellow confined spheres, reminds me a lot of the ability of camus's countryman, arthur rimbaud (from the the fifteen arc). hm! anyway, to go over the remaining ADA members:
so, where's yosano? tachihara spared her (unsurprising imo, though there's no doubt a degree of poetry for him in forcing her to heal herself over and over like she did his brother, but he's clearly not the sadistic torturer type).
ranpo is...somewhere. he was able to contact kyouka at some point about the manuscript, and he's obviously not dead. the question i have, although this applies to pretty much all of them, is what is he doing??? presumably he has...plans, of some sort.
tanizaki and kenji - i'll be a little surprised if tanizaki doesn't try to get in touch w/ naomi. the fact we still know very little about kenji, and he remains a fairly static character, makes me nervous considering how fleshed-out the other ADA members are. i dunno, i really feel like he's hiding something. my theory is that he's a spy the way tachihara / ango were spies but i have no good evidence here besides "does not pass vibe check."
kunikida's fate also unknown, besides "alive"
the margaret / hawthorne subplot seems unresolved - both character fates are like, extremely ambiguous. will say though obsessed with lucy casually throwing hawthorne into the void and atsushi just expresses no concern whatsoever.
(obsessed with everything about lucy tbh she was a member of an incredibly powerful gifted organization and then decided to just become a waitress at a cafe, where she bullies atsushi all the time and uses her pocket dimension to store her boss's coffee, and then she quits her job to go on an incredibly risky mission for the ADA. lucy i would do anything for you)
so confused as to what happened w nikolai 😭😭 maybe i should just accept that if you're a major character in this series who exists in the present, there's no such thing as permanent death.
the most notable exclusion from this season to me: where the hell is akutagawa? dude, you can't tell me asagiri just didn't have room for him. i don't believe that. i am nervous for him!!

I was wondering if you have any theory on who from the ADA that Mori will choose to trade to the PM? I am thinking Tanizaki or Atsushi. Tanizaki because of his ability is very useful, but I was also speculating on possibly Atsushi to guilt Dazai? What are your thoughts?
A BSD ask? I wasn’t expecting one so thanks anon!
I believe many people have already written about this topic so I don’t want to go into a lot of details. I will simply try to eliminate who Mori is unlikely to recruit to his side based on their ability and their usefulness. Also, tbvh, it’s quite hard for me to make any solid theories about this series... though, I will try (and I could be totally wrong anyway lol the author is waiting to swing another wild curveball right into my face)
Before coming to your question, I just want to recap a few things and then build off it bc I feel it’s important sort of.
So, at the time Mori made the deal with Fukuzawa to rescue the ADA from the Hunting Dogs, Port Mafia was (seemingly) not being targeted by either the DoA or the Hunting Dogs. The Agency was made out to be terrorists for whatever reason whereas the Port Mafia was stronger on the power scale and ADA needed their protection (even if it was against their will).
Tumblr media
But now? With all that has happened, most of the Port Mafia has been turned to mindless vampires. I held out some hope that the top executives might have been whisked off to safety before the vampire outbreak could spread to them—after ch. 98, I don’t think so. Chuuya is the strongest martial artist in the PM. If he has been turned, then no doubt the rest too must have been turned. Mori (and maybe, a few subordinates for his protection) are probably the only ones left human in the PM.
Tumblr media
I am guessing by the time the news of what’s going on with the lower ranks reached the top brass, it was already too late and perhaps, Chuuya had to sacrifice himself to protect his Boss? Well, that’s just my headcanon—since going by his casuals, the popular theory is that he was caught off-guard. Maybe.
Anyway, my point is that both ADA and PM are on a (seemingly) losing end rn, comparatively PM even more so. Port Mafia (Mori) has even judged that the Agency’s strategy is essential to the Mafia too. See—
Tumblr media
The tables have turned now and the Agency, cornered as they are, are stronger on the power scale (they have strength by their numbers alone. The ADA hasn’t lost any members so far except for Dazai who is working from the prison through Ango anyway) compared to PM, which has only one important figure now. Meaning, rn, the Deal isn’t gonna go through. Surely, Mori’s first priority is to bring PM back to normal, right?
And, for that, we need Dazai. He has to make contact with Bram Stoker and neutralize the Vampire ability (Dracula??) (the same way he did for Q).
Annnd, this—if my guess is right—will take place at the end of DoA arc. How the DoA arc will end, idk. Pretty sure nobody will die and stay dead (Yosano is right there and as long as she is safe, we can put that thought out of mind. Please heal Akutagawa and Tachihara too, Yosano-sensei~) but not whether everything will be back to normal as before.
You see, the DoA arc is the longest arc so far and I can’t even compare the amount of damage the ADA and the PM has taken to that in the Guild or the Cannibalism arc. More importantly, Dostoyevsky. The guy wasn’t really involved in either of the earlier arcs. The first one—he meant for the Guild to take the hit and in the second—he meant to get arrested.
I have no idea what his real agenda is because continuous attempts at burning down a city to hunt a single novel seems tedious and uneconomical. If I were the leader of a massive underground network, I would rather keep it lowkey and locate the Book without any fanfare plus keeping the news of my search from the ears of the major protectors (?? what do I call them?) of the city. That’s why it feels to me that either the Book isn’t really a Book and something else (unlikely bc they apparently already wrote the DoA scenarios on a Page from it) or he was (for the 1584th time) lying about his actual mission. Maybe, not about him wanting to rid the world of the ability users but the rest? (something like this theory maybe?)
Oh, but back to topic. Why did I get talking about Fyodor lol sorry
tl;dr, only if Yokohama returns to normal with the ADA and the PM back to their usual petty animosity will the Deal make any sense. Till then, the two organizations have to work together, whether they like it or not, bc that’s the only way to protect the city and the country. If the Hunting Dogs (not Fukuchi) become their temporary allies, even better.
Well, having said this, let’s go through the list of the Agency members (ability users only) and see the chances of who might get traded into the PM anyway.
Tumblr media
Yosano: I don’t think Mori was being serious when he said he wanted Yosano to join the Mafia. It was probably more to cause confusion and a feeling of betrayal (if the false news of Fukuzawa agreeing to trade Yosano was believed, that is) among the ADA ranks and nothing more. But I could be wrong ofc.
Kyouka: Even if she weren’t an ex-PM member, I doubt Mori would particularly demand for her coz the PM already has an assassin trained by Verlaine (Gin) and an ability user with the same ability (Kouyou). Wasting the one chance to get hands on a powerful ability user from the ADA on her doesn’t seem likely.
Ranpo: No, obviously.
Kunikida: His ability is quite useful as we saw during the Cannibalism Arc (him activating it for Tanizaki over a long distance) and during the Introduction Arc (when he and Dazai switched places to neutralize the countdown ability user (I forgot the name)); add to it, he is Dazai’s current trusted partner. But, but, he isn’t exactly cut out to be a mafioso because of his highly valued ideals. Recruiting him might cause more harm to the Mafia than good. In short, this (lol sorry Kunikida)—
Tumblr media
Kenji: he is a tank like Chuuya; might make him a good addition to the PM if only for his ability. Taking into account his personality... well, it is not like I won’t love to see a happy sunshine-y ever-optimistic mafia lol
Atsushi: Now we are getting a bit closer to the possibility. Depends on Akutagawa btw
Akutagawa survives the DoA arc:
In this case, Atsushi won’t be traded. Because the Shin Soukoku will continue to work as a unit. Mori doesn’t have to go out of his way to hire the other part of the SSKK into the mafia.
Take Soukoku, for example. Chuuya is still in PM whereas Dazai moved to ADA. Yet during the fight against Lovecraft and Steinbeck, Mori sent Chuuya to form Soukoku once again and Dazai, in spite of his earlier reluctance to make an alliance with the PM (Mori) on the whole, had no choice but to agree. Similarly, at the time of crisis, Mori (or, rather, Dazai) will definitely make the Shin Soukoku to work together again.
Akutagawa doesn’t survive the DoA arc:
In this case, as you say, I can see the possibility of Mori hiring Atsushi if only to guilt Dazai bc he was the one to (indirectly or otherwise) send Akutagawa to his death. Chances are low, though, coz Mori is a cold, calculating man who values results over emotions. Only if he gets to guilt-trip Dazai into doing something for him via this route, then yeah. Otherwise, no.
Add to that, the fact that Atsushi’s tiger is closely related to the Book in some way? idek what the whole sporadic abduction of poor weretiger was all about? Now, the guy who was really after the Book doesn’t seem at all interested in Atsushi? Was he simply bluffing about him being related to the Book so the Guild and Shibusawa enter Japan and launch an attack on Yokohama?
Tanizaki: Frankly, he is the best choice for the transfer. He says he goes feral for his sister but he was also all ready to straight up assassinate the PM boss to save their President had it not been for Kouyou (she even remarks about his terrifying bloodlust as does Hirotsu about how his ability is so well suited for sneak assassinations.)
See—
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only that, he is the first to recover from the shock of the sudden Deal between the two leaders and adapt the fastest to the new circumstances—
Tumblr media
Annd the first to offer to switch to the Mafia instead of Yosano:
Tumblr media
All in all, Tanizaki seems the best choice. He has an ability suitable for stealth jobs—he is serious and ready to go to any lengths (even, kill) to pull off the job assigned to him. But most importantly, he doesn’t have any fast ideals. Hirotsu and Kouyou have already noted this and no doubt, Mori too. Among the members of the ADA, he does seem the perfect candidate for the transfer. But, well, let’s see what happens :)

Impervious
The Armed Detective Agency was in something of a chaotic frenzy.
This, in and of itself, was not anything new- Day in and out, if one listened hard enough, they could hear the infuriated screams of one Kunikida Doppo as he frantically chased after his coworkers in a futile attempt to get them to complete whatever paperwork they were avoiding that day. Hearing the terrified screams of the patients- Or perhaps, the victims- Of one Yosano Akiko’s medical practices also wasn’t too out of the norm, for the area.
What was out of the norm was the genuinely fearful air about the workers of the Agency- Every single one of them was rushed, in some way, and they all bore a frenzied energy that seemed to refuse the idea of sitting still.
And if one looked into the Agency’s office space, they’d find the reason why.
xxx—xxx—xxx
There was not a single member of the Armed Detective Agency that was having a good day, and it wasn’t even in the “we’ll laugh about this later!” way that Dazai Osamu liked to torment his coworkers with. To be fair, the man himself was hardly in the mood to be pulling pranks and making a mockery of everyone- And it was all for one simple reason.
Nakajima Atsushi had gone missing.
He wasn’t sick or calling out of work for some other reason, because Izumi Kyōka had seen him before she left their shared apartment, Kunikida had called to make certain that he wasn’t feeling ill and had forgotten to notify them, and Dazai had even broken into the apartment (without asking Kyōka) after all was said and done, just to double check.
He wasn’t lost in the depths of Yokohama, because Miyazawa Kenji and the Tanizaki siblings, Jun’ichirō and Naomi, had been combing through the city on foot to make sure he hadn’t gotten sucked into any trouble, and Tayama Katai has been looking through the security records in every available place, both legally and illegally, just to cover all their bases.
He wasn’t in the custody of the Port Mafia, which they admittedly only knew because at least three separate people would have sent a message to gloat about having captured the weretiger.
(Also, Dazai had not-so-secretly pulled some of his older strings and broken out a few threats of dismemberment, but that was neither here nor there.)
No one knew where the white-haired male had gone, and it was becoming increasingly obvious that someone outside of the usual suspects had interfered in their lives.
Now if only they knew who the hell this new subject was.
xxx—xxx—xxx
When he opened his eyes, it became clear to Atsushi that something had gone very wrong between Point A and Point B on his way to work.
Admittedly, the day had started off somewhat badly to begin with- Kyōka has dropped the breakfast crêpe he’d made her on her way out the door, so he’d promised to make her a new one while she went on ahead. Then, once he’d finished with it, he’d realized that he was late, and that he was certain to get an earful from Kunikida about it. So he’d stepped up the pace and started running for the Agency, and then-
And then-
And then what?
He… Remembers, somewhat vaguely, someone stopping him as he ran. They wanted something, he thinks. Then… Nothing. The last thing he remembered seeing was-
Ah, he thinks, somewhat dully, I dropped the crêpe.
It wasn’t actually that big of an issue, all things considered- Clearly, he’d been kidnapped- And yet, that’s what stuck out at him. That’s what he remembered.
How stupid.
You couldn’t have remembered something actually useful? Your captor’s face, perhaps? Your surroundings?
Useless, awful beast-
Atsushi breathed in. Breathed out. Not right now. He couldn’t handle hallucinations right now. He needed to think. Whoever took him had to want something, right? Something from the Agency?
But what, and why-
Creeeaaak.
The door opens, slowly and loudly, and for the first time, he realized that he was, in fact in an inclosed space- He just hadn’t thought to use his senses to confirm it. He isn’t wearing a blindfold, but the light is flickering and dull- Certainly dim enough to offset anyone else, if they’d been caught. The air is stale, too, an old kind of scent that makes him think of earth and dirt- Underground, then. Maybe.
How would you know? You can barely even function as a detective on a normal day, much less when you’ve been taken by someone.
Should’ve left you to die in a ditch.
Should’ve let you starve.
Should’ve left you rotting in the basement-
With a shaky sigh, Atsushi manages to ignore the words that have always haunted him, and the figure of a man standing just at the corners of his vision. Instead, he takes in his captor.
They’re taller- Taller than him, anyways- With messy, frantically rumpled brown hair and wild, dark brown eyes. He looks like he just rolled out of bed- Or like he’s been too worked up to take care of himself.
Atsushi catches a whiff of his scent and immediately decides its the latter.
He doesn’t… Register everything the man says- He’s still groggy from being unconscious, and there’s a distractingly sickening pit in his stomach that gets deeper the more this man talks.
Dangerous.
Run.
Stay away.
Run
Run.
Run!
And it’s only as the man tightens his restraints and lets out an unhinged laugh that Atsushi realizes, with a dullness that only comes from experience-
Oh.
There’s a nail above his foot, and a few more set aside.
His captor raises a hammer.
I’ve seen your kind before.
Atsushi doesn’t scream.
xxx—xxx—xxx
It takes them four days, some intense virtual searching from Katai, and the intervention of Edogawa Ranpo (Who had been away on a mission for the Agency for the first three days, and who they hadn’t been able to contact) for the Agency to realize when Atsushi was taken, who took him, and where he might be at the moment.
Most alarmingly, alongside this information, they discover what might be happening to the weretiger while they tried to find him.
Hanmura Ryō was a man with an extensive criminal history, and the connections to make sure he never really had to suffer for it. He was well know for kidnapping and torturing people- Usually, those people are between the ages of seventeen and twenty one, and they mostly had silver or white hair. This torture could apparently range from a single day to a month, and he’d initially killed his victims after becoming bored of them.
Then his connections had proven to be powerful enough to keep him from facing any real consequences, and he took to leaving his victims alive after he was done with them- A last sort of mockery on their inability to do anything to him.
Needless to say, this information only worked the Agency up even further.
After all, Atsushi, as far as they were aware, had never really had any experience with being tortured- Which wasn’t to say that they’d be alright if he did have experience with it, but it made them worried that it would break him irreparably.
(Of course, unknown to them- Or perhaps, ignored by them- Atsushi did, in fact, have experience in that field.
It wasn’t his fault they didn’t believe him.)
Luckily, it only took a few more minutes of digging from Katai (Minutes filled with some very colorful threats from Dazai, and a distinctly murderous feeling from Kyōka) to narrow down the kidnapper’s location- And, with any luck, it will be Atsushi’s location, as well.
It’s Dazai, Yosano, and Kunikida that end up getting in the car to go on their rescue mission.
(Kyōka had wanted to go, but Fukuzawa Yukichi had very firmly put his foot down, regardless of her past experiences, and told her that Atsushi would much rather have the first face he sees upon returning be that of his little sister.
She was now waiting very stubbornly by the door to be exactly that, but he’d take what he could get.)
They just hoped they wouldn’t be too late.
xxx—xxx—xxx
Atsushi doesn’t know how long it’s been, exactly, but he does know that he’s… Surprised? At how little this is all affecting him.
Oh, don’t misunderstand- He’s terrified out of his mind at being in a place that he never asked to be in, that’s so similar to a place he hated (Hates? Hated? Dazai and Jun’ichirō had made things so confusing…). He’s terrified that he can’t bring himself to use his Ability in such a place. He’s terrified that the Agency might not come for him- Because they can’t? Or worse, because they don’t want to.
But- While the nails going up and down his arms and his legs hurt- The torture itself isn’t getting to him. Oh, sure, the hot pokers that his captor had shoved in his gut hurt something awful, and getting his bones broken, only for them to heal, was an… Interesting experience, but.
But this wasn’t anything he hadn’t dealt with before. If anything, it was tame in comparison.
The man hasn’t even tried to sew his mouth shut, like one of the Sister had when he was a child. He isn’t being forced to do labor while injured. There’s blood- His blood- But he isn’t being forced to clean it up. Words on his own worthlessness as a human being aren’t being forced into his head, day in and day out.
Well, they are being forced there, but he isn’t sure if a hallucination counts- It isn’t anything new, after all.
It hurts- Everything the man does hurts. His body aches, and he knows that, without Byakko, he’d be irreparably broken, physically speaking.
But he’s used to this sort of thing. “This sort of thing” is one of his earliest memories.
His captor screams, frustration coating his voice as he kicks Atsushi’s chair down. The pokers twist in their wounds, making him wince, but he still doesn’t make much of a sound at the feeling.
Breath in, breath out.
The man shrieks again, foot coming down on his spine with an audible crack for what must be the fifth time.
Remember- What’s better than being alive?
xxx—xxx—xxx
It doesn’t take all that long for the trio to arrive at their location- A fairly normal house, all things considered, if somewhat rundown and a bit out of date. The key feature is, of course, the basement they’re almost entirely certain is holding Atsushi.
(Everyone hopes that’s where he is, at least. They’re pretty sure that Dazai will actually go on a killing spree if it isn’t- And they don’t think they’d stop him.)
The entire building is silent upon initial observation, though, and none of them are quite sure how to feel about that.
Is he okay?
Is he gagged?
Is he dead is he dead is he-
Yosano enters first, and Dazai would complain if he didn’t know it was to give her quick access to Atsushi if he had a fatal injury. (Also, she was generally a badass, but that’s another story, entirely.) The two men follow behind, all three quiet as they scan the first room for anything potentially alarming.
There isn’t much, really. Just some dull, ratty carpets, thrown over the floor in haste, and cracking wallpaper.
Also, there’s a padlocked door at the far end, and they could’ve sworn there was screaming of some sort.
It doesn’t take much more than that for them to break down the offending door, which was apparently soundproofed somehow, because the screaming, while still indistinct, became much louder without it. In fact, the screaming itself didn’t even stop at the noise of the door falling.
They take the stairs two at a time, with the exception of Dazai, who simply skips walking down entirely to throw himself at the bottom, hitting the floor in a neat roll as he gets back up.
All three of them get weapons out, turning to face the source of the noise.
None of them were quite expecting what they saw.
xxx—xxx—xxx
Atsushi doesn’t know what he did to make his captor so mad, but he’s kind of wishing he hadn’t done it, regardless.
The man will. Not. Stop. Screaming.
For someone with sensitive ears, like Atsushi, it’s hardly a pleasant experience, and he isn’t entirely certain what he’s yelling about in the first place- Wasn’t he the kidnapped one, here?
He shifted again, causing the plethora of nails, pokers, and stakes that his captor and pressed into his body to tug at him uncomfortably- Any bruises created from the beatings he’d been given had long since healed, much to the man’s ire, and he’d eventually chosen to keep going with the only things that left lasting marks.
(That they only left lasting marks because he wouldn’t remove them was ignored, apparently.)
His head fell back against the dirt floor he’d been laying on ever since the man had knocked over the chair that was holding him.
You deserve this.
Weak. Useless. Mindless.
It’s your own fault, couldn’t even hear him coming-
Monster monster monster monster-
He shut his eyes, trying to block out the voices hissing in his ears- But concentrating was a lot harder with the hunger twisting in his gut. His captor hardly felt the need to feed him, after all.
A foot lashed out, driving a trio of nails on his collarbone deeper into his body, and he choked at the sensation.
It still wasn’t a scream, though, and the man snarled, foot reeling back to repeat his actions-
Thu-thud thu-thud thu-thud-
THUMP.
If he’d been using them, Atsushi’s tiger ears would’ve twitched at the noises- As it stood, he simply raised his head, attempting to peer into the front of the room, where his captor typically used as his entrance and exit.
He blinked.
To be fair, he didn’t think the man was expecting the sight behind him, either, if the look on his face as he twisted around was any indication.
Behind him stood Dazai Osamu, Yosano Akiko, and Kunikida Doppo of the Armed Detective Agency.
And they did not look happy.
xxx—xxx—xxx
When they found their missing coworker, they’d expected blood- Lots of blood, to be honest. Broken bones, screaming, the whole nine yards- And they technically got that.
They just. Weren’t expecting the screaming to come from Hanmura.
Oh, Atsushi was clearly in pain, sure- His eyes were glassy, and his breathing was far to rapid for their comfort- But he wasn’t screaming or cowering, as they were afraid he’d be.
By all rights, he seemed almost… Used to this.
Had they still been too late? They’d moved as fast as they could-
Had he broken completely?
Was he just stronger than they thought-
God, they hoped he was stronger than they thought he would be-
It takes them only a moment to regain their bearings, and within seconds, Dazai has shot Hanmura in both kneecaps with pinpoint accuracy, with Kunikida moving in to fully restrain him a moment later. Yosano, meanwhile, had immediately moved to Atsushi’s side, carefully removing him from his restraints with some quickly applied bolt cutters and lock picks.
After that, it doesn’t take long at all for her to begin examining one of her newest coworkers- Senior only to Kyōka, really. With as much care as can be afforded, she begins checking the wounds around every intrusion to his body before removing them and allowing the tiger to do its work.
Better safe than sorry, she thinks. Super healing or no, if infection had set in-
She pushes the thought aside, only really intervening in the healing itself to remove any cauterized areas- The fucker had used heated pokers at some point, then.
How lovely.
(And maybe she would typically be more sadistic, but even she has her limits- And she won’t make things worse for Atsushi after he’d just spent four days being tortured.)
Luckily, it takes only five minutes for her to remove all of the nails and stakes and pokers that had been shoved in the silver-haired male’s body, and soon enough, she’s able to help him to his feet, though he’s a bit unsteady, and far, far too light.
(He probably hadn’t been fed at all, and she sees Dazai stomp a foot down on one of Hanmura’s now-broken kneecaps.
Good.)
Once he’s up, she steps aside and let’s Dazai hold Atsushi, instead- The man has been worried out of his mind, after all, and she can’t say she blames him.
True to expectations, Dazai immediately wraps an arm around Atsushi’s back to steady him again before pressing his face into his neck in a sort of half-hug, and after some rather impressive, nonverbal back-and-forth, he convinces him to at least get on his back so that he doesn’t have to walk too much.
(Healed or no, the man had still be starved. So what if he wanted to take care of him a little bit?)
A mutual look between all three rescuers tells them that they’ll talk about this later- About why Atsushi seemed so unaffected, and about how the hell to make sure that Hanmura stays down- But for now, they have more important things to focus on.
It was time to go home.
xxx—xxx—xxx
Author’s Note: Yes! It is I, Nyanon!!! Anyways, you mentioned wanting a fic of the “Atsushi being tortured” idea I sent you on anon- Hopefully this is good enough!
Also, if you’re wondering why Atsushi didn’t just turn into a tiger and eat Hanmura- It was sort of meant to be a “he’s been in this situation before, and just pliantly doing what they wanted was how he survived” sort of thing? Because Trauma. Hopefully that makes sense!

Dostoyevsky’s Psychological Ability
Tumblr media
A bit of wild (very, very hypothetical) theorizing here.
So, with the reveal of Sigma’s... amnesia, we can presume that he was either created by the book (Fyodor bringing his OC to life, which seems very Fyodor) or that he was a normal person (somewhat similar to Chuuya’s mysterious origin before becoming Arahabaki’s host) completely modified by... something. The book, or Fyodor.
Tumblr media
I’m going to run with the latter because it’s more interesting to me, and because it parallels Sigma with Goncharov (and they already have a somewhat similar mindset, as pointed out by my friend @trashyhumanespresso). It seems likely that Fyodor’s ability is something that somehow targets human brains, which fits on a meta level with Fyodor’s namesake, with his foils, and with his strategies.
Thus far in the story, we've seen Fyodor get Ace to hang himself:
Tumblr media
Kill a kid by touching his head:
Tumblr media
Get rid of the part of Goncharov's brain that feels sadness:
Tumblr media
Explode a police officer's skull:
Tumblr media
And now, he might have completely altered Sigma’s memories (I’m totally aware he very well might have used the book to do this but. It’s more interesting to me if the book is not involved lol so that’s what I’m running with but, who knows, either could be the case).
Tumblr media
We don’t know how Fyodor’s ability precisely works--whether he manipulates their brains/exploits already-present weaknesses/targets certain parts of the brain--but it definitely involves Fyodor having to touch someone. Which brings to mind his foil also emphasized this chapter (see here for a great meta on Fyodor and Dazai’s foiling by @linkspooky): Dazai, whose ability also requires him to touch someone to enact it.
Tumblr media
Fyodor’s match with Dazai is fascinating, as he cannot manipulate nor harm him thanks to Dazai’s No Longer Human instantly nullifying his ability. It also carries symbolic weight: while Dazai’s touch removes a person’s ability, keeping him isolated, Fyodor’s likely literally seems to bring death, which is symbolic of the nihilism he drowns himself in and that Dazai, thanks to Odasaku and his work at the AMA, resists even against his instincts towards it. Dazai is the one character Fyodor is not able to rattle, which means he’s likely key to stopping Fyodor.
In real life, Fyodor Dostoyevsky was a psychologist before Freud even wrote his theories, and he’s still held up as one of the most psychological writers in all of literature. Nietszche referred to Dostoyevsky as “the only psychologist from whom I had something to learn” (ohhh snap Freud) in Twilight of the Idols. Dostoyevsky’s works constantly explore humanity’s psychology at an individual and societal level, and are frequented with references to madness/mental illness as well.
Similarly, Fyodor is targeting the ability-users as individuals and also the larger society surrounding them. For society, he’s particularly aiming to dismantle the three-part agreement Natsume arranged between the Port Mafia, Armed Detective Agency, and the government. First the cannibalism plot pitted the mafia and the AMA against each other, and they were only able to solve it by working together. Now the government is set against the AMA via framing the AMA for that official’s murder, the mafia saves the AMA but at the cost of influencing more conflict over Mori lying about Fukuzawa’s agreement that he can take Yosano, and the mafia itself is now dealing with Tachihara’s betrayal and Gin’s injury (she is not dead), and now the AMA wants to ally with the Hunting Dogs but I doubt that’ll go super smoothly.
As for individuals, I’ll discuss Dazai more in a moment, but: Fyodor’s ability also has potential to foil another character given a fair amount of focus this arc: Yosano. His ability brings death, and her ability brings life even from already-existing pain, which it amplifies but results in them healing, which is symbolic of BSD’s overall message on life: it hurts, it can almost kill you, but it’s still healing in some ways. It is also symbolized by the butterflies associated with her, as butterflies symbolize rebirth, and as @aspoonofsugar has theorized, she also may not actually need to have them so close to death before healing them. (“Thou Shalt Not Die” is named after a poem Yosano Akiko wrote to express her pacifistic beliefs, after all, which seems interesting given that she has to hurt people to heal them.) Anyways, this would also explain Fyodor’s manipulation of the Hunting Dogs and the Port Mafia (as I’d be surprised if he didn’t know about Yosano’s past with Mori) to target her psychologically.
Tumblr media
As for individuals, obviously Fyodor is going to target Dazai somehow at some point in an attempt to defeat him. He already surreptitiously is, through the Hunting Dogs dynamic and Tachihara’s betrayal (I doubt he didn’t know) which led to Gin being stabbed, which affects Akutagawa and thereby Dazai.
All of this brings to mind the intense parallels with Dazai/Fyodor and Mimic/Odasaku, in which all the leader of Mimic wanted was to die facing his own abilities in Odasaku and caused chaos to get it--particularly through targeting orphans under his care. Given that every arc thus far has ended in some kind of Shin Soukoku fight, plus given what happened to Gin and his promise to Atsushi, Akutagawa and Atsushi are particularly at risk here. However, they aren’t helpless, and Dazai surely plans for them to take Fyodor down--and they will, in the end.

As much as I love Yosano and want my s/is to love her too, I think Jekyll! Gillian would be terrified of her at first. Given her background of being experimented on by another sadistic doctor with a healing ability, it’s take her a while to get used to Yosano. Which, from a shipping standpoint, offers some good scenarios of angst of her having to work through this trauma that wrestles with her growing fondness, y’know. Anyway, this particular piece isn’t really shippy, I wanted to write out a scene of what happened the first time Jekyll! Gillian found herself injured shortly after joining the detective agency, which as a side note is around a year before the main story starts. Also, this is a quick lil thing so I haven’t done much proof reading so excuse any typos please.
---------
She winced, squinting and blinking at the light hanging above her. She wasn’t sure where she was or what had happened exactly, her thoughts were still trying to wake up. She tried to move her hand to rub at her eye, but went still when she realized cold metal was keeping it in place.
Yosano looked over her shoulder at the slight noise. “Ah~ You’re awake now, hm? Poor timing for yourself, seeing as I’m about to get started, but more fun for me. Let’s see here…” she ran her fingers along her tools, gloves sliding over the cool metal. “I think I’m going to use… this one~” Se picked up a meat cleaver and flipped it in the air, catching it smoothly. “You got yourself a mighty fine injury out there, let me treat you.” She waltzed over to where Gillian lay on her table, holding the cleaver above her head with a wicked smile.
Gillian wasn’t seeing Yosano, though. No, looming over her in that moment was a different doctor, one from many years ago. The scalpel poised in her grip glinted bright in the overhanging light, kept always so pristine, not yet covered in crimson again. The doctor’s smile was that of an overeager cat, one that couldn’t wait to toy with it’s prey. The chains held her limbs tightly, she could hear them rattle with each fearful tremble of her small body. She couldn’t even turn her head to look away, for that too was chained to her table.
Yosano’s cleaver arced through the air, and the scalpel neared. Laughter echoed throughout time and memory, Gillian’s pupils growing small in her panic, frozen still in terror. She opened her mouth to scream.
“HYDE!”
That day, most everyone at the Armed Detective Agency was out working on one thing or another, meaning it was mostly empty save for a handful of office workers.
“Dazai! We’re already a full minute behind schedule! Stop lazing around this instant!”
And two men who also should have already been on a job by then.
“Hhhmmm, do I have to, though? I’m sure you can handle this on your own.” Dazai lounged sideways in his chair, legs propped up on his desk. He lay beck over the arm rest so he was looking up at Kunikida from upside down.
“While you have no idea how much I wish I could leave you here and not have to deal with your antics today, need I remind you that we work in teams. Which means, unfortunately, I have to drag your sorry ass along with me. Now, get up so we-“
Both men’s heads snapped up at the sound of metal tearing in another room, followed by a crash and a short exclamation of pain. That last noise they recognized as coming from doctor Yosano. They glanced at each other, expressions serious; they’d heard plenty of pained screaming from Yosanos operation room, but never anything from the doctor herself.
Yosano stumbled backwards, clutching her arm, four long gashes running from her shoulder to her elbow. “What the hell?!”
Behind her, the door slammed open; Kunikda still had one hand splayed across the door, the other holding a torn out piece of paper ready to be transformed at a moment’s notice, Dazai stood right behind him, eyes instantly taking in the room.
“What’s happening?” Kunikida demanded, his voice echoing through the room.
Yosano gave no response, instead keeping her attention on the girl standing on her table.
It wasn’t exactly the same girl she’d had strapped down, that was immediately clear. Her hair hung loose around her head, and where once it’s color had been mostly a pale green with a small section of dark, the two colors had swapped places. Her skin was now a grey green, her fingers replaced by long, dark talons, and her eyes were pure, inky, black with red swirling pupils. Those eyes bored into the doctor, wild and crazed to the point she wondered if they were actually looking at her.
“… Hyde. Is this what her full take over looks like?” Kunikida said, slowly stepping into the room, Dazai right behind him. She wasn’t paying attention to either of them though.
“I knew it; I knew it was all the same. I told that naïve little fool that she couldn’t trust anybody; that the only reason you could possibly want someone like her would be to perform more experiments on us.”
“Experiments?” Dazai muttered. His gaze wandered down, and settled on her exposed abdomen, her blouse having been unbuttoned and left open by Yosano earlier to examine her wound. There, standing out amongst her skin, was a collection of neat scars. The main one’s formed a Y shape, with smaller, slightly less prominent scars branching out in some places. It looked like the Y scar had been reopened many, many times.
“Well no more.” Hyde continued. Her voice shook in unhinged, barely controlled rage. One taloned hand came up to grab at her hair, and her razor sharp smile looked about to crack her face in half. “This time, I’m going to be the one to dissect you!” She coiled her body, and in a flash sprang forward, the table skittering backwards from the force. Claws out stretched, she aimed directly at the doctor.
She would have ripped the woman’s face to ribbons, torn her open as many times as it took to finally be rid of her, had Dazai not smoothly stepped directly into her path. His hands shot up to snatch both her wrists, and from the point of contact his ability emitted a bright glow, illuminating the dim room. The light color of her hair bloomed across the surface while the dark twisted and shrank, caged once again. Her red eyes shifted back to a bright blue, the black draining away. Gillian fell to the floor with a thump, held up only by Dazai’s grip still on her wrists.
From her closed eyes, a tear squeezed out, rolling down her cheek. “Please, no…”
The other three were silent, starring down at the unconscious girl at their feet. Slowly, Dazai released his grip, lowering her to lie on the floor.
“What the hell was that all about?” Kunikida asked.
Yosano loosed a breath, bringing her uninjured arm up to run a hand through her hair. “I have no idea. I was about to get started on healing her, when she screamed in panic for Hyde. Barely took any effort for her to tear out of the restraints after that, and I couldn’t jump back fast enough to avoid getting scratched. Maybe she thought she had been captured earlier? This was her first time having me work on her. I figured the scared look was from one of you guys telling her about my treatments. Hm.” She crouched down next to Gillian, pulling her blouse aside to run a hand over the skin of her abdomen, where previously an open wound had marred the area was now smooth skin. “Either way, looks like turning into Hyde completely healed her, so there’s no need for me to treat her today. One of you carry her to a bed, let her rest for a bit.”
“I can keep an eye on her, in case she panics and turns into Hyde again.” Dazai said, bending down to hoist Gillian into his arms.
Kunikida scoffed “You’re only trying to get out of working again. Still,” he regarded Gillian “do you think that’s a concern?”
Yosano shrugged “Can’t say for sure when I’m not sure what caused it in the first place, but I think, given her talk of “experiments” that she was triggered by the setting of the operating room, if she wakes up somewhere else, I think she’ll be fine.”
Dazai and Kunikida nodded in agreement.
In fitful dreams, Gillian saw images of the past. Of chains and red, concrete walls. Of pristine tools and syringes of unnamable liquids. Of sinister laughter and cruel, excited smiles. Of a small ball of light, always hovering at her side.

OK IDK IF YOU HAVE WRITE ABOUT THIS BUT HOW ABOUT A CROSSOVER BETWEEN BSD AND BNHA😂
HI DEAR! I HAVEN’T, BUT IT’S SUCH A WONDERFUL IDEA! LET’S PRETEND THAT, DUE TO QUIRK OR A STRANGE ABILITY, THE TWO PARALLEL WORLDS HAVE SMASHED INTO EACH OTHER AND ALL HOSTILITY HAS CEASED TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO FIX EVERYTHING.
BOKU NO HERO ACADEMIA X BUNGOU STRAY DOGS HEADCANONS
-Can you see Nakajima Atsushi and Midoriya Izuko becoming nervous, cinnamon-roll friends? I totally can, all blushy and nervous while meeting each other; whenever someone rowdy screams at them they jump in the air at the same time. Midoriya would be such a positive influence for Atsushi, as he definitely needs to be more self-confident and to realize he’s worth living. Midoriya would surely motivate him and make him stronger.
-Kyouka is immediately adopted by the girls of Class-A. Momo becomes her older sister and cuddles her anytime, not minding her…ehm, particular personality? And Uraraka and Tsuyu help her with her crush, teaching how to realize and deal with her feelings. They all spoil her rotten.
-Bakugou becomes Dazai’s favorite victim, getting pissed every five fucking minutes. Moreover, he hates not having his quirk and that’s way he doesn’t allow the man near him. He prefers to ally with Chuuya against him, at least they are short-tempered the same.
-Kirishima gets all enthusiastic and buddies up with everyone, even the one with whom he disagrees with from an ideal point of view. He’s also the one stopping Bakugou from exploding Dazai’s face.
-Kirishima and Kenji have an eating contest (A decision Kirishima would regret tremendously afterward, together with Bakugou, who has to assist the red-haired as he throws up)
-Kenji and TetsuTetsu become friends 100%, even if half of the time they misunderstand each other and get involved in absurd situations.
-Kunikida and Ida exchange suggestions and ideas to domesticate their wild colleagues/classmates. Or drink away their exasperation (Ida deinks obviously juice because he’s underage)
-Yosano becomes the girl’s leader, speaking about independence and girl power. Like the Boss Sister of a female street gang. She and Uraraka team up during fights, being a deadly badass combo.
-All the boys are mightily terrified by Yosano, especially after she has publicly used her ability on Grapeman.
-Higuchi gets kidnapped by the girls too! I can see her getting along with Jiro and Hakagure, who finds her gullible but adorable! At some point, Gin starts hanging with them too and they have big all-girls outings in the city. Favorite moment? Love talks! They tease Higuchi a lot for her crush on Akutagawa.
-Chuuya and Uraraka become sparring partner and spend hours discussing their similar powers, exchanging tips and tricks. That softy of a Chuuya would surely take a liking to her and treat her like a sister, even if he would mask it by saying he’s just studying the possible enemy. Their sparring sessions are so intense and rough that half of their friends stay as far as they can: these two go all-out. Bakugou occasionally joins too and chaos ensues.
-One time, Chuuya pushes Uraraka and Bakugou to drink with him, poking at their pride. They all get drunk and start arguing, laughing and crying at the same time. Things around them start floating or get exploded. Dazai, Kirishima, Deku and Ida have to join forces to stop them.
-Dazai and Shinsou banter continuously, one all witty and provocative, the other sarcastic and deadpanned. Dazai, however, is a good person underneath and implicitly reassures the boy he’s already a hero.
-Denki and Junichirou are absolutely best buddies! I can see them hanging around on the streets and having a good time. Kirishima often goes with them, sometimes bringing an annoyed Bakugou too (Who has to admit the other boy is not that insufferable). They also fight well combined.
-Denki is one quarter aroused and three quarters terrified by Naomi. When she touches him, he gets chills.
-Bakugou and Deku have a sort of truce (let’s say they don’t fight every five seconds) so that they can put their brains together to study and analyze the Abilities. They’re particularly wary of Dazai’s and Akutagawa’s.
-Todoroki is lost at first, but then he befriends Atsushi. However, he thinks his fights with Akutagawa are immature and ends up freezing both of them when they annoy him. Just for a little bit, nothing too painful. (Or maybe he just gets irked and competitive, who knows?)
-Kyouka adores Todoroki, he’s very cool in her eyes.
-Todoroki asks Dazai if he can erase his father forever and is disappointed when the man explains his ability doesn’t work like that.
-All Might and Fukuzawa have tea together and discuss loyalty, hope, justice, and cats. Aizawa joins the conversation only when they’re talking about cats and Fukuzawa decides he likes him.
-Mori is not invited at first and sulks a lot. Elise has to ask Fukuzawa to invite him so he stops being a child.
-Deku admires Ranpo a lot because he has understood the detective doesn’t have a real ability yet he’s amazing at what he does. It’s a powerful reminder that it’s not only his Quirk that counts. He often accompanies him during the investigations and takes notes of his deductions.
-Ranpo thinks Momo and Uraraka are precious. He gives them sweets.
-Ranpo calls Midoriya “my disciple” and recognizes his intelligence. He’s also very curious about Bakugou, psychologically speaking.
-All the girls of Class A slap and reject Dazai and his offer to double suicide. Hakagure starts crying, thinking he would kill himself on the spot anyway. Jiro hits him hard and then harder when he asks Momo. Uraraka grabs him the shoulders and shakes him, panicking, as she screams “YOU CAN’T SAY THAT! YOU HAVE TO LIVE! LOVE YOURSELF!”
-Chuuya sometimes gives Ojiro lessons of martial art.
-Midnight and Kouyou have a typical, heartfelt woman rivalry between them, nobody wants to meddle with them.
-Akutagawa is awkward as hell because he always ends up with Midoriya’s group and ?!?! no one is scared of him?!? He’s dumbfounded: that Todoroki guy freezes him every time he starts mumbling insults  or calls Rashoumon. They don’t have any damn respect for a Mafia member.
-Midoriya doesn’t like Akutagawa’s view of the world at all and tells him directly, straightforward and unwavering. Akutagawa tries to kill him again, Todoroki and Atsushi have to stop them. In the end, they have a sort of rivalry and “I’ll show you my way of thinking is the right one” thing going on.
-Akutagawa feels challenged by the fact that Deku finds an angry Bakugou scarier than him, so he randomly attacks the latest. Usually, or they kick each other’s ass equally, or Kirishima (Akutagawa is both horrified and astonished by his shining positivity and at the same time badassness when fighting) divides them before things escalate.
-Tokoyami and Akutagawa exchange information about their creatures/powers, but Dark Shadow is scared of Rashoumon and cries when it gets near. They also shows appreciation for each other’s fashion sense.
-Recovery Girl and Yosano “politely” argue about which healing power is better. Yosano is slightly offended and annoyed that now everyone wants to go the old (sly and smoochy) lady.
-The girls force an embarrassed Atsushi to change partially or entirely to pet his tiger form.
-Shinsou is deeply terrified by Yumeno and avoids her at any cost.
-Monoma and Dazai passive-aggressively insults each other all the time, becoming quite savage. Midoriya and Atsushi are still traumatized.

ALRIGHT LETS DO THIS
I’m equipped with a selective attention span and a moderate understanding of Japanese, TIME TO LAY OUT MY THOUGHTS ABOUT CHAPTER 49
Obviously: spoiler alert, I won’t try being vague either. Screenshots included, along with some minor translations that are more paraphrasing than actual translations.
SO FROM THE TOP
Tumblr media
YOSANO LEADS THE CAVALRY AND THEY LOOK DAMN GOOD DOING IT!! VERY HOPEFUL SHOT. THEY’RE KICKING SO MUCH ASS. Which is understandable tbh like in terms of making use of abilities? They’re is Illusion Support, Healing Support and a Tank, this is about as Dream Team as it gets. Also YOSANO so A++
(Anyone realise that Harukawa’s art in this chapter is fucking heavenly? They really did the Most this time. I love them so much it’s killing me.)
Tumblr media
Next up THESE ARE LIKE. SOME OF THE HOTTEST PANELS I’VE EVER SEEN FROM BSD I SHIT YOU NOT I THREW MY PANTIES AT THE SCREEN. RANPO IS TURNING IT THE FUCK UP, NO ITEMS, FOX ONLY, FINAL DESTINATION. AND CHUUYA. CHUUYA, MY SWEETHEART, WARINESS IS SUCH A GOOD LOOK ON YOU. THANK YOU BASED HARUKAWA.
If anyone wants to know: Ranpo here is referring to Chuuya as ‘Beautiful Hat-kun’! I’m not sure if this has happened beforehand, but IT SURE IS NOW AND I SURE AM... CONSIDERING IT. BOY. I FORGOT RANPO IS OLDER THAN CHUUYA UNTIL HE USED ‘KUN’ LMAO I LOST IT.
The convo’s gist is: Chuuya: I’m not gonna fight an ADA member with no ability Ranpo: Oh? But you’ve lost to Dazai, yes? Chuuya:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then KATAI’S PLACE. THIS WHOLE PART. I CAN’T ACTUALLY BEAR TO POST THE WHOLE THING SO HERE’S THE GIST OF ME:
Tumblr media
1) KUNIKIDA FUCKING BAREKNUCKLE PUNCHED A HOLE THRU A CEMENT WALL BOI WHAT THE F U C K
2) Atsushis face extended my lifespan (the rest of the manga tho brought it back down to 0)
3) Fun fact this panel was the first spoiler I saw before reading the chapter. I thought to myself, ‘ah, Kunikida went with Atsushi! Splendid! That means we’ll get to see KNKD talk to his husband Katai!’
Tumblr media
4) I’m so sorry. I jinxed it. I cursed it. I’ve failed all of you. THATS THE FACE OF A MAN WHO JUST WATCHED HIS FRIEND OF 10 YEARS GET SHOT BY A FUCKING DEMON. STONE COLD. IM DEAD INSIDE BITCH. DEAD!!!!!
5) I CANT EVEN BEAR TO LOOK AT IT ALL I WANT IS FOR KATAI TO COME B A C K PLEASE KUNIKIDA’S BEEN THRU E N O U G H JUST... LET HIM HAVE A BREAK N HUG HIS FUTON HUSBAND WTF
THEN NEXT UP IS FUCKING AKUTAGAWA AND KYOUKA LIKE FUCK
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LIKE BITCH WHAT THE FUCK!! WHAT THE FUCK!!! HE SAYS ‘IT’S BEEN A WHILE’ WHICH IMPLIES?? SO MUCH??????? I LOST IT IMMEDIATELY?? APRICOTS: DROPPED.
AND THEN THE LEGENDARY PANEL
Tumblr media
HE SAYS ‘FINALLY (AFTER A WHILE), AN OPPONENT WITH BACKBONE’ (I THINK?? HE USES A JAPANESE EXPRESSION THAT IMNOT FAMILIAR WITH) LIKE BRUH
Personally this part wasn’t all that interesting to me until the later half of it but I’LL GET TO THAT
Skipping over the RanChuu part bc idk what to say fam, they’re trapped in a murder mystery now and Ranpo literally said “Let’s try not to die together” im Tired That They’re Targeting Me Like This
Tumblr media
Tbqh i feel that if my senpai grabbed my fucking knife and snapped it in hald with his bare hands i’d be fucking terrified but KYOUKA... SHE’S BEING BRAVE AND ALL. LOOK AT HER EYES. THEY’RE A FOCAL POINT THROUGHOUT THE NEXT FEW PAGES
I’M TOO LAZY TO ACTUALLY PUT PAGE BY PAGE HERE SO HAVE THE DIALOGUE INSTEAD
Aktgw: Isn’t it odd, Kyouka. Your eyes. They are very different from when I first met you. =FLASHBACK, 6 MONTHS AGO TF= Kyouka: Are you the one with the Ability that can cut through anything? Aktgw: If so? What of it? Kyouka: Snow Demon killed my parents. I want revenge. So please kill me, the owner of this demon. =FLASHBACK END= Aktgw: From your eyes, it was obvious. You hated life. From the time you jumped off the train, until the ship, and the whale, you did not see meaning in living. Kyouka: What would you know about that? Aktgw: I do know. Because there was (I knew?) a child with those same eyes, void of life’s purpose. Kyouka: What happened to that boy? Aktgw: The same thing that happened to you. Through meeting certain people, and through meeting certain groups, they were able to lose those eyes. AKUTAGAWA’S FLASHBACK ATSUSHI (!!!!): I SAW WORTH IN KYOUKA, EVEN THOUGH I’M WORTHLESS MYSELF...!! (MY FAV PART, WAIT FOR IT) Aktgw: ...Kyouka. Aktgw:  よかった な (Yokatta na) (YOKATTA NA) (ITS HARD TO TRANSLATE BUT THE SENTIMENT IS ‘IT’S GREAT’ (THAT YOU FOUND THE ADA’))
AND HE SAYS THIS WITH ENOUGH SINCERETY THAT KYOUKA LITERALLY OLLIES RIGHT THE FUCK OUT!! SHE LOOKS SO WORRIED TOO LIKE FML... I’M WORRIED TOO BITCH AKUTAGAWA LITERALLY SHOWED A FUCKING EMOTION!!! AND ATSUSHI IS THE ONE WHO BROUGHT OUT THAT EMOTION IN HIM!!! WHAT!! THE!! FUCK!!!!
MY SHIN SOUKOKU HEART BITCH I CRIED. SO MUCH. FUCK. AKUTAGAWA SHOWING KYOUKA AN EMOTION FUCKING RUINED ME!!!
Ah the rest of it is lemon man rambling and the cavalry RETREATING I didn’t bother translating it bc im not interested in him, basically FUCK!! THIS CHAPTER WAS WILD AF
